GRACE RICHARDSON
DURHAM -- A memorial service for Grace Richardson, the artist whose handiwork is known throughout the Whole Foods Market stores, will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at the Eno River Unitarian Universal Fellowship at 4907 Garrett Road.
Ms. Richardson died Monday, Aug. 2 in an automobile accident in Lake Geneva, Wis., after a family reunion to honor her mother, Prudence Richardson of Lake Forest, Ill., on her 80th birthday.
Ms. Richardson's daughter, Elizabeth Iglehart, remains in Froedtert Memorial Hospital in Milwaukee after suffering critical injuries in the accident. Another passenger, William L. Triplett of Durham, was treated for cuts and bruises and released.
Ms. Richardson was born in Chicago March 30, 1949. She grew up in Champaign, Ill., where her father, the late Ambrose M. Richardson, was on the architecture faculty at the University of Illinois and later entered the private practice of architecture. Ms. Richardson was active in theater and art programs from her high school days and enrolled in the University of California at Berkeley where she earned a B.A. in studio art in 1971.
After graduation she moved to Boston where she worked for the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. In 1972 she was married to James Dirk Iglehart and the two moved to Durham when Dr. Iglehart joined the medical faculty at Duke University. Ms. Richardson was active in Duke activities and taught children's art classes at the Durham Arts Council. A son, James Richardson Ilgehart, was born to the couple in 1978 and the daughter, Elizabeth, was born in 1980. The Ilgeharts were divorced in 1984.
Ms. Richardson first joined Lex Alexander's Staff at Wellspring Grocery in Durham in 1988, creating the graphic style for the store's monthly newsletters, laying out and illustrating them herself. She also produced the newspaper advertising, the in-store handouts and all of the original store signage, from blackboards to produce signs, and everything in between. As the number of stores grew, she directed teams in each store to create signage using the style and templates she designed, Her warm and fun illustrations, long enjoyed by Wellspring customers, were also used by other regions of the parent company, Whole Foods Market. She created the images on such products as the Whole Foods Celebration Cider, which is sold nationwide. She also created the illustrations for a store sign package used by the stores in Northern California, and was working on "Grace's Hand," a typeface based on her handwriting, to be used in store signage in all 97 Whole Foods stores.
In recent years Ms. Richardson had taken over the strategic planning and execution for the marketing and interior store design for all of the existing Wellspring stores and new store openings, most recently the store in Atlanta, Ga.
Her creativity and unique style added a warmth and personal dimension to the Wellspring Grocery stores that helped differentiate them from the chain supermarkets. Hand-lettered and illustrated signs harken back to a time before mass-produced signing, and Ms. Richardson was able to create a distinctive "look" for the company that was recognizable to staff and customers alike.
Art had been Ms. Richardson's consuming passion since early childhood and over the years she worked in an array of media, including marker, oil, pen, ink, clay and computer graphics.
"My sister Grace was a wonderful daughter, sister and mother," said her sister, Prudence Beidler. "To our family she brought fairness, wisdom, empathy but, above all, she brought a sense of humor."
Survivors include William L. Triplett, her two children, her mother, Prudence Richardson of Lake Forest, Ill; four siblings: Ambrose M. Richardson of Flushing, N.Y.; Prudence Beidler of Lake Forest, Ill., Lucy Hammerberg of Bannockburn, Ill.; and Frederick Richardson of Green Bay, Wisconsin; as well as 11 nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions in Ms. Richardson's memory to the Eno River Association, 4419 Guess Road, Durham, N.C. 27712; the Triangle Land Conservancy, P.O. Box 13031, Research Triangle Park, N.C. 27709-3031; or to MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Drivers), P.O. Box 52587, Durham, N.C. 27717.
