"Rudie" C. Farlow

"Rudie" Clark Farlow died suddenly Jan. 25, 2006 after suffering a brain aneurysm. She was 72.

A lifelong resident of Orange County and graduate of Chapel Hill High School, she worked at the Chapel Hill Police Department for 10 years. She worked for the Orange County Sheriff Department for 11 years before she retired in 1996. She worked part-time until her death. She was a three-year cancer survivor.

Funeral services were held Jan. 27 at Carrboro United Methodist Church. Burial followed at Westwood cemetery.

Survivors include three daughters, Kimberlie J. Farlow of Richmond, Va., Kellie Farlow McLeod of Greensboro and Kristie A. Farlow of Hillsborough; and six grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to Triangle Hospice Community Bereavement Center, 1001 Corporate Drive, Hillsborough, N.C. 27278.

Lorraine D. Geiger

Lorraine Dossett Geiger of Chapel Hill died Jan. 26, 2006.

She attended the New York School of Fine Arts and Applied Design, and Parsons School of Design. She was an artist and fashion designer. In 1993, she moved to Chapel Hill, where she studied figure drawing at UNC and at the ArtsCenter in Carrboro.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 30 at the Eno River Unitarian Church.

Survivors include her husband. Albert Geiger; three daughters, Susan Geiger of Goldsboro, Clare Bauer of Durham and Alexandra Geiger of Kingston, N.Y.; a son, Albert Anthony Geiger Jr. of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sisters, Patricia Madalin of Ann Arbor, Mich., Dolores Carroll of Denver, Colo. and Nancy Dossett of Chapel Hill; two brothers, John Dossett of Chapel Hill and Ted Dossett of Raleigh; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Jvaughn M. Griffin

Jvaughn Moore Griffin of Pittsboro died Jan. 25, 2006 at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford following a period of declining health. She was 58.

A native of Lenoir, she was retired from Kayser-Roth Hosiery, where she was a spinner, and later retired from Byrd's Foods, where she worked as the deli manager. She was a member of Pittsboro Baptist Church.

A service to celebrate her life was conducted by the Rev. Tripp Harmon and the Rev. Ray Gooch Jan. 27 at Pittsboro Baptist Church. Interment followed in Hank's Chapel United Church of Christ cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, William L. "Billy Lewis" Griffin Jr. of the home; a daughter, Holly Smith of Haw River; step-daughters, Darlene Flaherty of Asheville and Kathy Thompson of Pittsboro; step-sons, Daryl Griffin and Brian Griffin, both of Pittsboro; a brother, Reed Moore of Sanford; and four sisters, Alice Henson, Percilla "Pug" Haithcock and Renee Clark, all of Albemarle and Linda Peele of Moncure; and eleven grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Pittsboro Baptist Church, P.O. Box 696, Pittsboro, N.C. 27312.

Ruth M. Jepsen

Ruth M. Jepsen of Carolina Springs Apartments in Carrboro died Jan. 26, 2006 at UNC Hospitals after a brief illness. She was 89.

She was a native of Chicago, Ill.

Funeral services will be held in Rockford, Ill.

Survivors include two sons, William W. Jepsen Jr. of San Francisco, Calif., and Thomas Jepson of Chapel Hill; and two daughters, Susan Rich of Birmingham, Ala. and Mary Wallace of Dallas, Texas.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Shelter of Orange County, 1081 Airport Road, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27514.

Tressie Ott

Tressie Irene James Ott died Jan. 27, 2006 in Raleigh. She was 86.

A native of Montgomery, Ala., she graduated from Lanier High School and lived most of her life in Atlanta, Ga., before moving to Raleigh in 2000 to be near her children.

A funeral was held Jan. 28 in Montgomery.

Survivors include a sister, Martha Ellen James Hopkins of Decatur, Ga.; a son, James William Ott of Chapel Hill; a daughter, Linda Elizabeth Ott Edwards of Raleigh; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Margaret R. Davis

Margaret Ruth Robbins Davis died peacefully in her sleep Jan. 18, 2006. She was 83.

A native of Dallas, Texas, she spent her early years in Chicago. She graduated from Women's College in Greensboro then joined the Office of War Information as a secretary in London, England, where she met her husband. She received a master's degree from UNC-Chapel Hill and taught English and French at St. Augustine's and later at SUNY-Farmingdale.

No service is planned.

Survivors include twin sons, Miles of San Francisco and Jabalpur, India and Michael of Carrboro.

Arrangements by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas.

David Galinsky

David Galinsky died Jan. 25, 2006 in an accident. He was 71.

He was born in New Haven, Conn., and received a bachelor's degree from Duke University and a doctorate in psychology from the University of Michigan. He became a assistant professor at UNC in 1965, and subsequently was a professor, director of the clinical program and chairman of the psychology department.

A memorial service is planned.

Survivors include his wife, Maeda; two sons, Michael Galinsky of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Adam Galinsky of Chicago, Ill.; a daughter, Dana Galinsky-Malaguti of Hickory; a sister, Rayma Greenberg of Los Angeles; and three grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the David and Maeda Galinsky Graduate Fund, Department of Psychology, UNC-Chapel Hill, N.C. 27599-3270.

Roger D. Hannay

Roger Durham Hannay died on Jan. 27, 2006 at UNC Hospitals following complications from open-heart surgery. He was 75.

Born in Plattsburgh, N.Y., he was a composer and a professor of composition at UNC for nearly 30 years. He was chairman of the Division of Fine Arts, and in 1995 was awarded the title of professor emeritus. He was the founder-director of the UNC New Music Ensemble, the Composer-Concert Series and the Electronic Music Studio.

He wrote 120 works of music, including 10 symphonies, five operas and numerous chamber music works. He received grants and commissions from the North Carolina Symphony, the National Endowment for the Arts, ASCAP, the American Music Center, the Kenan Foundation, the Pogue Foundation and the North Carolina School of the Arts. He was a member of the Southeastern Composers League.

An archive of his life's work was established at the Wilson Library at UNC in Chapel Hill, and includes manuscripts, letters, photographs and other memorabilia.

A private burial is planned in Kew Gardens, N.Y. A memorial concert of his compositions is planned.

Survivors include his wife, Janet, and a daughter Dawn.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the North Carolina Symphony Endowment Fund to be used towards commissioning new works by North Carolina composers.

Charles W. Irish

Charles Wilkin Irish of Chapel Hill died Jan. 30, 2006. He was 78.

He graduated from the Colorado School of Mines in 1950. He worked for General Electric Co. and Booz-Allen and Hamilton Inc. before starting his own executive search firm, Charles Irish Co.

A funeral service will be conducted Feb. 4 at 11 a.m. at Jones Funeral Home.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Irish; two sons, Bob and Dick; a daughter, Carrie Finneran; a sister, Dorothy Beall; a brother, Richard Irish; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the N.C. Botanical Garden, CB 3375 Totten Center, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27599.

Doris B. Beaver

Doris Barnes Beaver of Raeford died Feb. 3, 2006 at Pennybyrn at Maryfield in High Point.

A native of Lancaster, S.C., she attended Furman University. She helped develop the Children's Center at First Baptist Church in Maiden in the 1970s.

A service of remembrance will be Feb. 5 at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Raeford. Interment will follow in the Raeford cemetery.

Survivors include three daughters, Wanda Bandy of Chapel Hill, Stephanie Cordick of Greensboro and Melissa Baker of Roaring Gap; two brothers, Henry Roland Barnes Jr. and Alton Barnes; and eight grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Western Carolina Chapter, 1315 Ashleybrook Lane, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103-2918.

Arrangements are by Crumpler Funeral Home and Cremation, Raeford.

Azucena M. Datiles

Azucena "Zeny" Martinez Datiles of Chapel Hill died Jan. 31, 2006 at UNC Hospitals. She was 59.

A native of Manila, the Philippines, she graduated from the University of Santo Thomas. She came to the United States in 1968 and received a graduate degree from Northern Illinois University. After marrying, her family moved to Chapel Hill in 1976. She worked at Chapel Hill High School as a nutritionist and later worked at UNC as an administrative dietitian and later, clinical dietitian, until retirement in 2003.

She volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, the Soup Kitchen, Care and Share, Senior Citizens program and as a fashion model for the Carolina Club. She managed the family real estate business, directed the repair and maintenance of several rental properties, and managed the construction of a duplex at the family farm in Hillsborough. She was an active parishioner of St. Thomas More Catholic Church.

A Mass of Christian burial was conducted Feb. 4 at St. Thomas More Church.

Survivors include her husband, Ulda P. Datiles; a daughter, Dulce Lea of Cary; a son, Daniel Datiles of Chapel Hill; her mother, Julita Martinez of Chicago; two brothers, Godofredo Martinez of the Philippines and Elito Martinez of Chicago; a sister, Profetiza Palafox of Chicago; and one grandson.

Mary Cline Davison

Mary Laura Cline Davison of Hillsborough died Jan. 31, 2006 after a brief illness. She was 79.

A native of Concord, she attended UNC-Greensboro and then graduated from the Duke University School of Nursing in 1947. She joined Duke in 1954 and worked her way to assistant director of surgical nursing before leaving in 1968. After working at the State Nurses Association, she worked at UNC Hospitals, becoming surgical nursing supervisor until retirement in 1988. She helped establish the Northern Orange County Rescue Squad and developed North Carolina's emergency response system. She was a long-time member of Hillsborough's St. Matthews Episcopal Church, where she sang in the choir and was a vestry member.

A memorial service was held Feb. 4 at St. Matthews Episcopal Church.

Survivors include her husband, Alexander "Sandy" T. Davison; a sister, Constance Phillips, of Richmond, Va.; a son, Tom of Columbus, Ohio; a daughter, Jeana Harrison, of Vancouver, Wash.; three grandsons and three great-grand children.

Louise C. Kidd

Louise Conner Kidd of Pittsboro died Feb. 1, 2006. She was 87.

A native of Burlington, Vt., she spent her childhood in Daytona Beach, Fla. and Chapel Hill, where she finished high school. She attended Meredith College for two years and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1940. She moved to Chatham County in 1960 and taught high school French and English for 30 years. She was a member of Pittsboro United Methodist Church, where she was an officer in the United Methodist Women and a member and teacher of the Horton-Houser Sunday School class. She served as the church financial secretary. She was a life member of the UNC-CH Alumni Association and a member of the Mayflower Society, served as president of Friends of the Library, participated in raising funds for a medical center in Pittsboro and volunteered at the local food bank.

A service to celebrate her life was held Feb. 4 at Pittsboro United Methodist Church.

Survivors include four daughters, Jennifer Carpenter of Garner, Kathy Keane of Union Hall, Ireland, Betsy Starling of Madison, Wis., and Denise Thompson of St. Louis, Mo.; a sister, Millicent Barnard of Shoreham, Vt.; a brother, Fred Conner of Greensboro; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Pittsboro United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 716, Pittsboro, N.C. 27312.

Stephen P. Koronic

Stephen Paul Koronic of Durham died Jan. 30, 2006 at UNC Hospitals. He was 53.

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., he served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 15 years and achieved the rank of staff sergeant. He was a team technical lead for PC support at Qualex Inc. in Durham. As a parishioner of Holy Infant Catholic Church, he served as eucharistic minister and an RCIA sponsor. He was a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus.

A Mass of Christian Burial was conducted Saturday at Holy Infant Catholic Church. Burial with full military honors will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Salisbury National cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Marshall Koronic; a daughter, Christin Koronic of Morrisville; his father, Stephen Koronic Jr. of Long Island, N.Y.; and mother-in-law, Shirley Marshall of Carrboro.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 620 W. Morgan St., Raleigh, N.C. 27603.
