Willie C. Pitts

Willie Alice Cutshaw Pitts, 69, of Waynesville, died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, at Pardee Hospital in Hendersonville.

A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Julius P. and Hazel Evans Cutshaw. She retired after 33 years from Dayco as an inspector in the hose department. She was a member of Allens Creek Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Kenneth, Troy, Tommy and Truman Cutshaw.

Surviving are one daughter, Beverly Carver of Waynesville; two brothers, Robert and Carl Cutshaw, both of Waynesville; a sister, Grace Caldwell of Waynesville; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Garrett Funerals and Cremations. The Rev. Carl Presnell officiated. Burial was in Greenhill cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jeff Sutton, John Carver, Beecher Phillips, Dean Cutshaw, Bobby Cutshaw and Alvin Cutshaw.

The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, WNC Chapter, 3 Louisiana Ave., Asheville, NC 28806-341.

Michael Trantham

CLYDE — Michael “T.T.” Trantham, 48, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002.

A native of Haywood County, he was a 1973 graduate of Pisgah High School. He was a son of James Edwin Trantham and the late Janie Frady Trantham.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Diane Denise Trantham.

Surviving in addition to his father are one brother, Roger Dale Trantham of Waynesville; and two sisters, Ann T. Wells of Asheville and Jean T. Caldwell of Waynesville.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Lake Junaluska First Baptist Church. Burial was in Fulbright cemetery.

The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Garrett Funerals and Cremations.

Bobby F. Rogers

Bobby Francis Rogers, 68, of 17 W. Farley St., Waynesville, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at Mission St. Joseph’s Health System. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Francis Melvin and Millie Crawford Rogers. He was a member of Fines Creek Memorial Baptist Church and was an Army veteran.

Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Ethel Ferguson Rogers; one daughter, Denise Rogers Stamey and her husband, David, of Clyde; and one grandchild, Taft Noland of Greenville, N.C.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville. The Revs. Jimmy Moore, Carl Presnell and Billy Ferguson officiated. Burial was in Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. military graveside rites were conducted by the Waynesville VFW Post No. 5202 and the American Legion Post No. 47.

Pallbearers were David Stamey, Mike Swanger, Bobby Joe Sutton, Don and Wendell Ferguson and Todd Jenkins.

The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. At other times, the family was at the home.

Memorials may be made to the Haywood County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 932, Waynesville, NC 28786.

Larence M. McLeod

FAYETTEVILLE — Larence McKinley “Leo” McLeod, 73, of 525 Waterbury Drive, Fayetteville, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at Womack Army Medical Center in Ft. Bragg.

He was a retired U.S. Navy E-9 Master Chief and was awarded the Bronze Star.

Surviving are his wife, JoAnn McLeod of Fayetteville; three sons, Larry McLeod of Morehead City, Stephen McLeod of Fayetteville and Scott McLeod of Waynesville; three daughters, Sherry Payne of Fortuna, Calif., Lorinda Hultquist of Warner-Robins, Ga., and Lisa Mason of Austell, Ga.; two sisters, Muriel Osborn of Waynesville and LouEster Moore of Rockingham; three brothers, Robert, Wendell and Phillip McLeod, all of Cheraw, S.C.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church in Fayetteville. The Rev. Ben Cole officiated. Burial was in LaFayette Memorial Park with military honors.

The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to New Hope Baptist Church, 3675 Rosehill Rd., Fayetteville; or to the ALS Association of N.C., 1425 Rock Quarry Road, Suite 113, Raleigh, NC 27610.

Donny R. Davis

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. — Donny Ray Davis, 55, of Douglasville, Ga., died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002.

A native of Marble, he was the son of Lawrence band Anna Kate Davis. He was a Vietname War veteran. He retired from Western Electric and was employed by the Cobb County School System. He was a member of Marble Springs Baptist Church.

In addition to his mother and father, he is survived by his wife of 36 years Judith Ann Davis; two sons, Bryan and Jonathan Davis; and his brother, Fred M. Davis of Waynesville.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home, Douglasville.

J. C. Woody

CANTON — James Charles “J.C.” Woody, 63 died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home.

A native of Hartford County, Tenn., he had spent most of his life in Haywood County. He was a son of the late Jimmy and Bertha Banks Woody. He was employed by Canton Ice and Fuel Company and Plus Laundry and a member of White Oak Baptist Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Nancy Woody O’Neil; three brothers, Wils and Crawford Woody, both of White Oak, and Robert Lee Woody of Bessemer City, NC; four sisters, Lottie Ensley of Sevierville, Tenn., Ottie Bell and Patricia Hannah, both of Welcome, and Barbara Dene Hannah of Clyde; one step brother, John Lewis Woody; two step sisters, Art Messer and Carrine Woody; and one grandson.

Services were at 2 p.m. Sunday at Liberty Baptist Church. The Revs. Ted Reeves and Jerry Nelson officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

The family received friend from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Wells Funeral Home of Canton. At other times, the family will be at the home of the daughter, Nancy O’Neil, Wesley Street in Canton.

Virginia C. Gaddy

Virginia Cape Gaddy, 80, of Waynesville, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2002, at her home.

A native of Cleveland County, Ga., she the daughter of the late Cicero and Montique Burke Cape. She was a licensed cosmetologist and a member of Robbinsville Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Cicero W. Cape.

Surviving is her husband, Hugh Gaddy. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Gateway Memory Park in Cleveland, Ga. The Rev. Carl Presnell will officiate.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Haywood County, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721; or Women of East Waynesville Baptist Church, 175 Woodland Drive, Waynesville, NC 28786.

Garrett Funerals and Cremations is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy G. Lane

CANTON — Dorothy Agnes Giles Lane, 73, of Hidden Valley Circle, Canton, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002.

A native of Loudon County, Tenn., she had resided in Haywood County since 1972. She was the daughter of the late Albert and Hazel Chambers Giles. She attended Loudon County High School. She was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church and the Bethel Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are her husband of 51 years, William D. “Bill” Lane; two daughters, Sheila Diane Lane of the home and Teresa Lane Goodson and her husband, David, of Waynesville; five sisters, Alta Ruth Weaver of Roswell, Ga., Mary Nell Hughes and Lynda Gobel, both of Loudon, Geraldine Steele of Highland Village, Texas, and Carolyn Snow of Cleveland, Tenn.; and three brothers, Tommy Giles of Loudon, Roy Giles of Beauford, S.C., and Bennie Giles of Colorado.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville. The Revs. Riley Covin and Dr. Roy Kilby will officiate. Burial will be at Bethel cemetery.

The pallbearers will be the members of the Sonoma Masonic Lodge No. 472 Geof Cooper, Carroll Stockton, Jerry Hoglen, Stanley Henson, Larry Hughes and Hugh K. Terrell.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home.

Memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church, 5868 Pigeon Road, Canton, NC 28716; or to Bethel Presbyterian Church, 664 Sonoma Road, Waynesville, NC 28786.

Gladys P. Cogburn

CLYDE — Gladys Pressley Cogburn, 91, formerly of Canton, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at Britthaven of Clyde.

A native of Monroe County, Tenn., and lived most of her life in Haywood County. She was a daughter of the late Matthew and Jamie Brooster Pressley.

She was preceded in death by three children, Vera, Wade and Bobby Cogburn.

Surviving are four daughters, Katherine Clontz, Mickey Rathbone and Louise and Wanda Cogburn, all of Canton; two sons, Teddy and Tony Cogburn, both of Canton; one sister, Grace Snyder, of Indiana; 15 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Wells Funeral Home in Canton. The Rev. Phillip Wyatt officiated. Burial was in Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens in Clyde.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Ralph C. Rogers

Ralph Cleveland Rogers, 70, of Starnes Cove Road, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at Asheville Solace Center.

A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Claude C. and Annie Clontz Rogers. He had resided most of his life in Buncombe County and was employed as a commercial truck driver. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are his wife of 25 years, Shirley Wright Rogers; one daughter, Karen Rogers of Snelson of Candler; one son, Troy Lee Roy Rogers of Asheville; two brothers, Troy Lee Rogers of Weldon and Richard Roy Rogers of Gulfport, Miss.; and one grandchild. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Morning Star cemetery. The Rev. James Craig will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Crawford/Ray Funeral Home.

Randy M. Galloway

BREVARD — Randy Martin Galloway, 62, died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002.

A native of Jackson County, he was the son of Zephia Parker Galloway of Cullowhee and the late Terry M. Galloway.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Marlene N. Galloway; one son, Joel Galloway and wife, Tina, of Franklin; two daughters, Karen G. Cooper and husband, Jason, of Fairview and Kellie G. Chappell of Weaverville; two brothers, Conley Braxton Galloway of Waynesville and Jack Galloway of Cullowhee; and four grandchildren.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Mount Moriah Calvert Baptist Church. The Revs. Claude Nicholson, Tommy Owen and Don Riddle will officiate. Burial was in Mount Moriah cemetery.

Moody-Connolly Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

James W. Gunter

LAKE JUNALUSKA — James W. Gunter, 85, of 33 Crestridge Drive, Lake Junaluska, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at Britthaven of Clyde.

Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville is in charge arrangements.

Marie Barker

Marie Barker, 89, of Waynesville died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at the Brian Center in Waynesville.

A native of Clarksburg, W. Va., she was the daughter of the late Sam and Josephene Marr. She was a foster grandparent for 22 years. Surviving are one son, Richard Barker and his wife, Carol, of Panther Creek; and four grandchildren.

Asheville Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Susan M. Wutrick

YORK, S.C. — Susan McConnell Wutrick, 46, of York, S.C., died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at her home.

A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of Alene Patrick McConnell of Waynesville and the late Ural McConnell. She worked with her husband at York Moulding Co. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of York, S.C., the Sunday school director and a deacon of the church. She helped with Vacation Bible School.

Surviving in addition to her mother, are her husband, Todd Wutrick; two sons, Arron and Matthew Wutrick, both of the home; and two brothers, Jerry and Billy McConnell, both of Waynesville.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of York. The Dr. Randy Gardner will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.

Julia M. Martin

HENDERSONVILLE — Julia Mayfield Martin, 82, of Hendersonville, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, in the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock.

A native of Simpsonville, she was the daughter of the late George Earle Mayfield and Lily Fall Mayfield. She was a graduate of Asheville Teaching College. She taught elementary school for 20 years in the Palatine, Ill., and Miami, Fla., school systems. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hendersonville.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, John S. Martin, who died in 1996; two brothers, George Walter and Milton Fall Mayfield; and three sisters, Edna Earle Iliff, Charlotte Alice Pollock and Evelyn Josephine Dean.

Surviving are two sons, Stephen John Martin and his wife, Anne, of Waynesville, and Patrick Earle Martin and wife, Mary, of East Aurora, N.Y.; one daughter, Judy Tiller and her husband, Guy, of Ganado, Texas; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, at the First United Methodist Church of Hendersonville. The Rev. Sybil Parks will officiate.

Memorials may be made to Elizabeth House, Four Seasons Hospice, P.O. Box 2395, Hendersonville, NC 28793.

Jada M. Massie

CLYDE — Jada Michelle Massie, 26, of 184 Austin Road, Clyde, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at Mission St. Joseph’s Health System. A native of Buncombe County, she was a former certified medical assistant at Mountain Medical Associates in Clyde She attended Emmanuel Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Anthony Wayne Massie; her mother, Arlene, and her stepfather, Charles Price; maternal grandparents, Bill and Ina Martin of Clyde; and stepbrother, Phillip Price of Waynesville. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville. The Revs. Billy Ferguson and Garry Rogers will officiate. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Jeremy and Clifford Massie, Daryell Ledford and Brandon Perry. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Mary P. Kovac

FINDLAY, Ohio — Mary Charlotta Eve Pressley Kovac, 63, of Findlay, Ohio, died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at her home. A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of J. Clayton and Jane Leather-wood Pressley. She attended Good Shep-herd United Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband, James Samuel Kovac; her children, Cynthia Haynes, Clara Deaver, James Kovac Jr., and Caryn Kovac; two brothers, Wiley Holland and James Pressley; three sisters, Vera Robirds, Nell Revis and Ruth Jones; and seven grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Coldren-Crates Funeral Home in Findlay. The Rev. Scott Mishler and Dr. Dwight Allen will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. A service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday Greenlawn cemetery Chapel in Akron, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to A Second Look at Sports, P.O. Box 1341, Findlay, OH 45839-9907; or Promise Keepers, P.O. Box 103001, Denver, CO 80250-3001.
