Paul Emanuel Mast

Preacher Paul Emanuel Mast, 95 years and 364 days old, of Lansing, was called to his Heavenly home on Monday, July 10, 2006 at Ashe Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 13, 2006 at 11 a.m. at Meadowview Mennonite Church with Rev. Dan Hess, Brother Earl Neff, Rev. Larry Shepherd and Rev. Ed Godshall officiating. Burial followed in the Tucker cemetery.
The family received friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 12, 2006 at Boone Family Funeral Home.
Preacher Mast was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania on Monday, July 11, 1910 to the late Emanuel and Annie Blank Mast; he was the eighth of nine children. Paul married Rachel Lapp on February 4, 1933. In 1952 Paul was ordained to the ministry at Nickel Mines Mennonite Church in Pennsylvania. In 1956 Paul and Rachel were called to North Carolina to begin work at Little Horse Creek. Paul served as pastor at Meadowview Mennonite Church until 1975. He and Rachel enjoyed many years of retirement together. He was preceded in death by his eight brothers and sisters, and his wife of 72 years, Rachel Lapp Mast on March 30, 2005. His children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandson were at his side on Sunday, July 9, 2006.
He is survived by two sons, Glenn Mast and wife Margaret and Ross Mast and wife, Polly, all of Lansing; three daughters, Anna Mary Shepherd and husband, Larry and Jean Hess and husband, Dan, all of Lansing, Leona Peters and husband, Jessie, of Manheim, Pennsylvania; fourteen grandchildren, Dwight Shepherd, Derek Shepherd, Jennifer Privette, Chris Mast, Richard Mast, Joy Gullman, Rachel Sexton, Thad Hess, Keith Peters, David Peters, Dean Peters, Kent Peters, Kyle Shepherd and Anissa Shepherd; thirty-three grandchildren; a great, great-grandson; several nieces and nephews also survives.
Flowers were accepted or memorials may be made to: Gideon’s, PO Box 993, West Jefferson, NC 28694.

Hazel May Day Rhodes

June 29, 1920 - July 7, 2006
Mrs. Hazel May Day Rhodes, age 86, of Jefferson, died Friday, July 7, 2006 at Margate Health & Rehab Center.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 9, 2006 at Bristol Baptist Church with Rev. Billy Joe Blevins officiating. Burial followed in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens cemetery.
The family received friends from 7 - 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2006 at Boone Family Funeral Home.
Mrs. Rhodes was born in Ashe County on Tuesday, June 29, 1920 to the late Jacob W. and Letha Ann Campbell Day. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Delmas “Dusty” Rhodes.
She is survived by a brother, Chester Arthur Day, of Jefferson; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mary (Roxie) Miller Sheets

Mrs. Mary (Roxie) Miller Sheets, age 73, of Glendale Springs, died Saturday, July 8, 2006 at her residence.
Funeral services were held on Monday, July 10, 2006 at 11 a.m. at Glendale Springs Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Ken Morris, Rev. Billy Robinson, Rev. Sonny Thomas and Rev. David Sexton officiating. Burial followed in the George Miller cemetery.
The family received friends from 7 - 9 p.m. on Sunday, July 9, 2006 at Boone Family Funeral Home.
Mrs. Sheets was born in Ashe County on November 2, 1932 to the late George Thomas and Sallie Cox Miller. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Glendale Springs Missionary Baptist Church.
Along with her parents she was preceded in death by three brothers, John Miller, Paul Miller and Dennis Miller.
She is survived by her husband, Rev. Roger Sheets, of the home; two daughters, Robin Sexton and husband, Greg, of West Jefferson and Melissa Barr and husband, Rusty, of West Jefferson; four brothers, Don Miller, Benny Miller and Billy Ray Miller, all of Glendale Springs and Roy Miller, of Concord; five grandchildren, Andrew Sexton, Matthew Sexton, Thomas Sexton, Avery Barr and Olivia Barr; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Memorials may be made to: George Miller cemetery, c/o Billy Ray Miller, 636 Glendale School Road, West Jefferson, NC 28694.

Bina Estelle Grogan Toliver

May 31, 1917 - July 14, 2006
Bina Estelle Grogan Toliver, age, 89, of Kings Creek Church Road, Lenoir, died Friday, July 14, 2006 at the residence. She was born May 31, 1917 in Ashe County to the late Isom and Anna Trivette Grogan. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Toliver and three brothers, Ellis, Pete and Ronda Grogan.
Mrs. Toliver was a retired cafeteria worker with the Caldwell County School System and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Kyle Toliver and wife, Jeanette and Dennis Toliver and wife, Sue all of Lenoir; three daughters, Mrs. Al (Ruby) Knotts of Joppa, Maryland, Ms. Martha Shell of the home and Mrs. Scott (Myrtle) Livingston of Lenoir; a sister, Mrs. Dixie Campbell of Sparta; nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 17, 2006 at 2 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Joe Angle and Rev. Waitsel Beard. The body was placed in the church thirty minutes prior to the service. Interment followed at Kings Creek Baptist Church cemetery. The family received friends Sunday evening from 7 -8:30 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home.
Serving as pallbearers were: Carson Cook, Doug Damron, Jeff Livingston, Kyle Clement, Kenneth Penley and Drew Shell.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Died July 13, 2006
Ms. Mary Beth Trivette, age 60, died Thursday, July 13, 2006. Graveside services were held 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 16, 2006 at Zoar United Methodist Church cemetery.
Ms. Trivette was born in Chesterfield, S.C., a daughter of Naomi Rivers Boatwright and the late Eugene H. Boatwright. She was a former Postmistress with the U.S. Postal Service in Fleetwood, N.C. Mary was preceded in death by a daughter, Natalie Renee Moss, a brother, Joe Boatwright and by a sister Annie Ruth Boatwright.
Surviving is a son, Johnathon Moss of Chesterfield, S.C.; daughter, Juliet Elizabeth (William) Dula of North Wilkesboro, N.C.; mother, Naomi R. Boatwright of Cheraw, S.C.; two sisters, Margaret (Lacy) Adams of Cheraw, S.C. and Norma (Reggie) Short of Morven, NC; one niece and two nephews.

Thelma Clara Newberry Weaver
Jefferson
March 18, 1931 - July 9, 2006
Thelma Clara Newberry Weaver, age 75 of Jefferson, North Carolina, died Sunday, July 9, 2006 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Weaver was born March 18, 1931 in Russell County, Virginia to the late Jim and Laura Samples Newberry. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Dickson Weaver. Mrs. Weaver was a member of Mt. Jefferson Church of the Nazarene.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 12, 2006 at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Mark Wiest officiated. Burial followed in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family received friends from 1 – 2 p.m. prior to the funeral service.
Mrs. Weaver is survived by a daughter, Martha Weaver Thorndyke of Jefferson, N.C.; sister, Ivellie Stilwell of Raven, Va.; several nieces and nephews.

Tony Carlton Barker of Jefferson, N.C., died Sunday, August 13, 2006 at Wake Medical Center.
Mr. Barker was born in Ashe County, N.C. to Joseph C. and Betty Bare Barker. He was preceded in death by his father; Joseph C. Barker.
Funeral services were held Thursday, August 17, 2006 at 3 p.m. at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Lonnie Jones and Rev. Lloyd Day officiated. Burial followed in the Dixon cemetery. The family received friends Thursday, August 17, 2006 from 2 - 3 p.m. at Badger Funeral Home. Joseph Matthew “Matt” Barry, age 34, of West Jefferson, N.C. died Wednesday, August 16, 2006, at his home.
Funeral services were held Sunday, August 20, 2006, at 3 p.m. at the Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel. Elder Eddie Lyalls and Elder Bobby Absher officiated the service. The family received friends from 1 – 3 p.m. prior to the services at the funeral home. Burial followed in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Barry is survived by his parents, Anthony Ray Barry of Shady Valley, Tenn. and Donna Absher Garris of Darlington, S.C.; two brothers, Anthony Ray Barry, Jr. of Ashland, Ky. And Ashton Cline Barry of Shady Valley, Tenn.; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Geneva D. Absher of West Jefferson, N.C.; one aunt, Linda Miller of West Jefferson, N.C.; two nephews and three nieces.

Robert Peter Chittick, age 33 of Jefferson, died Saturday, August 12, 2006 at his home. Mr. Chittick was born April 23, 1973 in Paisley, Scotland to Carol Ann Chittick Hilliard.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents; Robert Thomas and Ilse Chittick.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Friday, August 18, 2006 at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Lloyd Day officiated. Burial followed in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family received friends from 1 – 2 p.m. prior to the service.
Mr. Chittick is survived by his parents, Carol Ann and Hewlette Hilliard of Havelock, N.C.; one son, Logan Cade Chittick of Fleetwood, N.C.; sisters, Tamara and Shiona Gibson both of Havelock, N.C.; step sister, Captain Melanie Taylor of New Mexico; step father, Deryl Lane Gibson of Waynesville, N.C.; step grandmother, Edith Gibson of Waynesville, N.C.; his one true love, Brandy Craven; nieces and nephews, Scott, Claudia & Kaelah; Aunt Jean and Aunt Elsie both from Scotland.

Mr. Harold Edward Griffitts, age 70, of Lansing, died Tuesday afternoon, August 15, 2006 at his residence.
Funeral services were held on Friday, August 18, 2006 at 11 a.m. at Sturgills Baptist Church with Rev. Lloyd Day officiating. Burial followed in the Zion Hill cemetery.
The family received friends from 6 – 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 17, 2006 at Boone Family Funeral Home.
Mr. Griffitts was born in Ashe County on Sunday, December 15, 1935 to the late Clarence Elmer and Ester Pennington Griffitts. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Tony Gene Griffitts and a sister, Barbara Ann Griffitts. He was an agricultural farmer.
He is survived by two brothers, Danny Griffitts and Gary Griffitts, both of Lansing; a sister, Maxine Hanks, of Lansing; a step-daughter, Fanny Thomas, of Abingdon, Virginia; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Flowers were accepted.

Jewel Osborne, age 75, of Jefferson, N.C., died Monday, August 14, 2006 at Ashe Memorial Hospital in Jefferson.
Mrs. Osborne was born November 6, 1930 in Creston, NC to the late Joel E. and Pearl Pennington Osborne. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Granville Ellihue Osborne.
Funeral services were held Friday, August 18, 2006 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel. Rev. Tommy Dollar and Rev. Tom Stuart officiated. Burial followed in the Scott Blevins cemetery in Lansing, N.C. The family received friends from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. prior to the funeral service. Flowers were appreciated.
Mrs. Osborne is survived by two sons, Jimmy Dean Osborne of West Jefferson, N.C. and Tommy Lee Osborne of Maury, N.C.; one daughter, Karen Bingham of Jefferson, N.C.; three sisters, Beatrice Arnold and Margaret Osborne, both of Jefferson, N.C., and Deanna Cox of Shouns, Tenn.; two brothers, Dexter Osborne of Lansing, N.C. and Dean Osborne of Statesville, N.C. Also surviving are five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Lockie Mae Osborne

Died July 31, 2006
Lockie Mae Osborne, age 93, a resident of Delmar Nursing and Rehabilitation, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, July 31, 2006.
She graduated from Lee College in Cleveland, Tenn., with an Associate of Arts degree. She was an admired teacher of special education as well as a dedicated Sunday School teacher for many years.
She was a devoted and beloved wife to the late Rev. Vester Osborne.
Mrs. Osborne will be deeply missed by her children and their spouses, Joanne Carmean, James and Carolyn Osborne, Mildred and Eugene Maggio and Adena and Sheldon Dawson, and a special son-in-law, John H. Peek. She also touched the hearts of her 10 grandchildren, Wanda Sterling, David Carmean, Ronnie Peek, Debbie Hambrick, Kevin Osborne, Terri Hastings, Jason Dawson, Jeano Pelletier Jr., Tina Hurley and Shantell Schnepel and her 18 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Rev. Bruce Roten of West Jefferson, N.C. and Raymond Roten of Cleveland; two sisters, June Kemp of West Jefferson and Lottie McCoy of Oxford, Pa., and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, George and Artie Roten; three sisters; one brother; a daughter, June Peek; and two sons-in-law, Albert Lee Carmean and Jeano Pelletier Sr.
A private funeral service was held at Short Funeral Home in Delmar. A longtime family friend, Rev. R. E. Crowley, officiated.

Lloyd Jack Testerman, age 64 of Crumpler, North Carolina, died, Saturday, August 19, 2006 at his home. Mr. Testerman was born March 12, 1942 in Ashe County to the late Avery and Minnie Jones Testerman.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, August 21, 2006 at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Charlie McCoy, Rev. Lloyd Day and Rev. Ralph Smith officiated. Burial followed in the Dixon- Testerman cemetery. The family received friends from 1 – 2 p.m. prior to the service. Mr. Testerman is survived by his wife, Corine DeBoard Testerman; one daughter, Renee Testerman Fortner of Asheville, N.C.; sons, Allen Testerman of Mooresville, N.C. and Greg Testerman of Grassy Creek, N.C.; brothers, Paul Testerman of Lansing, N.C., Virgil Testerman of New Castle, Del. and Jones Testerman of Grassy Creek, N.C.; sisters, Hazel and Helen Roark both of West Jefferson, N.C., Anna Lee Goss of Jefferson, N.C., Gladys Conley of Mobile, Ala. and Reba Rash of Creston, N.C.; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews.

Earl Weaver

March 31, 1940 - August 18, 2006
Earl Weaver age 66 of West Jefferson, N.C., died Friday, August 18, 2006 at his residence.
Mr. Weaver was born in Ashe County, N.C. on March 31, 1940 to the late Silas and Cora Lee Roark Weaver. Mr. Weaver was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan Renee Weaver. He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army serving two tours in the Vietname War. He retired from the U.S. Army after 21 years of dedicated service to his country. Mr. Weaver loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, August 23, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel. Rev. Ralph Smith and Rev. Scott Courtney will officiate. A military graveside service will follow in the Taylor Family cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday, August 23, 2006 from 1:30-2:00 p.m. at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, c/o Judy Leek, 206 Oak Grove Circle, Jefferson, NC 28640 or the American Cancer Society, c/o Renea Adams, 372 Oscar Day Rd., Jefferson, NC 28640.
Mr. Weaver is survived by his wife, Norma Rathman Weaver; son, Richard Weaver of Montana; daughter, Joy Jenkins of Oregon; brother, Edgar Weaver of Pennsylvania; sisters, Mildred Rouser of Pennsylvania, Julia Hall of Ohio; step son, Kevin Howell of West Jefferson, N.C.; step daughter, Kim Howell of Ohio; aunt, Grace Roark of Mountain City, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Dorothy Alexander Blevins, age 87, of Deep Gap, died Monday morning, August 21, 2006 at her residence.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, August 23, 2006 at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Paul Coffey officiating. Burial followed in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 10 - 11 a.m. on Wednesday, one hour prior to the funeral service.
Mrs. Blevins was born in Ashe County on Sunday, February 23, 1919 to the late Shubal Vance and Myrtle Ballou Alexander. She worked as a cook at Healing Springs Elementary School. She was a member of Gap Creek Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband Franklin Dale Blevins on March 30, 1997.
She is survived by two sons, Martin Blevins, of Deep Gap and Gary Blevins and his wife, Jo, Semora, N.C.; a daughter, Jan Bare and husband, Bob, of Jefferson; a sister, Maxine A. Miller, of Jefferson; a brother-in-law, Garner L. Blevins, of Jefferson; special friends and caregivers, Peggy Hutchins, Carolyn Hemmings, Preacher Paul and Dot Coffey; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Violet Miller Cummings Carroll

Violet Miller Cummings Carroll, age 83 of Winston-Salem, N.C., formerly of West Jefferson, N.C., died Wednesday, August 23, 2006 at the North Carolina Baptist Hospital.
Mrs. Carroll was born June 8, 1923 in Ashe County to the late Clarence and Carrie McClure Miller. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Cummings. Mrs. Carroll loved quilting, crocheting and working in her yard and rose garden. Other activities she enjoyed were yard sales, traveling, fishing, flea markets, cooking and canning.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 26, 2006 at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Deran Wyatt and Rev. Russell Sheets officiated. Burial followed in the Ebenezer cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 - 9 p.m. on Friday, August 25 at Badger Funeral Home.
Mrs. Carroll is survived by her husband, Eldon Carroll; two daughters, Geraldine Sookhoo and husband, Rudy, of Nashville, Tenn. and Joyce Myers and fiancé, Pete, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two brothers, Leonard Miller of Wilkesboro, N.C. and Parnell Miller of Millers Creek, N.C.; two sisters, Daisy Wyatt of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Millie Rose Carlton of North Wilkesboro, N.C.; three grandchildren, Suzette Hood of Ft. Pierce, Fla., Becky Cummings of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Linda Saye of Atlanta, Ga.; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
