Thelma Stike
Nottingham, Pa.
November 9, 1918 - February 28, 2006
On February 28, 2006 our beloved Mother and Nana passed away in her home surrounded by love. She was a resident of Nottingham, Pa. for all of her adult life.
Left to cherish her precious memory are her only son, Robert Stike of Nottingham, Pa.; her grandchildren, Mike Stike of Peach Bottom, Pa,. Ellen Johnson of Forest, Va., Barbara Lee of Oxford, Pa.; eight grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and friends too numerous to mention, but all so very special to Thelma. She was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters; Earl Miller, Vance Miller, Edna Wyatt, Hazel Wood, Blanche Davis, and Pearl Miller.
Born in Ashe County, North Carolina on November 9, 1918, Thelma was reared in love by her parents, Will and Bertie Miller. It was there that she met her one and only love, James Claude Stike, also known as “Crockett”. They married in August 1937 and shortly thereafter moved to Pennsylvania. This is where their son, Bob, was born and where they made a living running mushroom farms. Thelma had learned at an early age the value and reward of hard work and she didn’t mind teaching it to the rest of us. Although she enjoyed flowers, her gardening passion was of the vegetable variety. Every spring she would plant a garden tending to it all summer and then reap the harvest canning almost everything that came out of it. Her green beans were the best! Thelma and Crockett were married for 45 years before he went to be with the Lord on August 27, 1982.
Nana’s love for her family goes unsurpassed. Her only son and her three grandchildren each uniquely shared a special bond with her. Each respected spouse was as dearly loved. The notion of family extended to friends and neighbors; there was always room for one more at the table. It didn’t take long for Thelma’s grandchildren’s friends to also call her Nana.
Thelma did not walk quietly through life. She was the kind of woman that left an impression on anyone who met her. She was colorful, gregarious, and held strong opinions on most things and never shied away from sharing her convictions. She was proud and fiercely independent. Most of all, she had a heart of gold. She will be missed.
Thelma was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Rising Sun, Md. since 1994 where she served our Lord by teaching a ladies Sunday School Class. Before moving her membership to Calvary Baptist, she was a member of Wrightsdale Baptist Church in Peach Bottom, Pa. from 1938-1994. There she served her Lord in many various ways. She was never idle when it came to serving the Lord Jesus Christ.
Thelma’s family would like to take this opportunity to thank those who helped in caring for her. Whether it was medical care, nursing care, spiritual care, cooking, cleaning, sitting or visiting, your kindness and thoughtfulness mean so much to all of us. Thank you.
