Doris C. Abbott

HENDERSON -- Doris Mildred Clark Abbott, 80, formerly of 1025 County Home Road, Henderson, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, in Maria Parham Hospital.
She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Ernest M. and Louvinia Roberson Clark. She was the widow of Lawrence Tyree Abbott.
She was a homemaker. She was a member of Trinity Church of the Living God.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity Church of the Living God, conducted by the Revs. W.H. “Buddy” Faucette and Charlie Chappell. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are three daughters, Annie R. West of Henderson, Sheila R. Somers of Durham and Doris R. Creech of Kenly; three sons, Albert L. Riggan of Richmond, Va., Ernest T. Riggan of Henderson and Henry W. Riggan of Henderson; a brother, Badger Clark of Thomasville; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of her daughter, Annie R. West, 459 Spring Valley Road, Henderson.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Robert Waddell, Henry Clay Riggan Sr., Robert Carter, Woodrow Boyd, Jamie Lassiter, Tim Medlin, Jamie West and Scott Wilson.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home of Henderson.

Robert T. Barnes Sr.

OXFORD -- Robert Thomas Barnes Sr., 84, of 1111 College St., died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at Granville Medical Center. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late George R. and Mamie Hobgood Barnes.
He was a member and deacon of Delrayno Baptist Church, a member of the Oxford Lions Club, Oxford Masonic Lodge #122 A.F. & A.M., Odd Fellows Club, and Chapter No. 94 of the Order of Eastern Star. He was retired co-owner of Baird Hardware and served on the board of directors at the Oxford Credit Union.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Delrayno Baptist Church by the Revs. Woodie Neal and Hilton Moore. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery in Oxford.
Surviving are his wife, Lily Mae Stem Barnes of the home; two sons, Robert T. Barnes Jr. of Fayetteville and Al Barnes of Durham; two daughters, Susan B. Gregg and Iris B. Dickerson, both of Oxford; two sisters, Alexine B. Hoyle of Henderson and Josephine B. Currin of Oxford; two brothers, Lee Roy “Shorty” Barnes of Durham and Waverly Barnes of Oxford; and six grandchildren.
Active pallbearers will be C. Page Brown, Harold Sherman, Alvin Boyd, Bruce Hockaday, Albert Capps, Dwight Wilkins, Jim Dixon, L.C. Adcock and Wilbert “Bill” Edwards.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Delrayno Baptist Church, 208 Rayland St., Oxford, N.C. 27565.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home and other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

Maggie H. Davis

HENDERSON -- Maggie Harris Davis, 89, of 1500 Satterwhite Point Road, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, at her residence. She was a member of Brookston Baptist Church.
She was a Vance County native. She was a retired employee of the Vance County School System.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Brookston Baptist Church by the Rev. Thomas E. Smith. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Peter Mark Davis; and one sister, Blanche Harris Kearney of Philadelphia, Pa.
The body will lie in state from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Wright Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home Inc.

Allen K. Ellington

FAIRFAX, Va. -- Allen Kimball Ellington, formerly of the Bobbitt community in Franklin County, N.C., died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000, at his residence.
Surviving are his daughter, Patricia D. Hanretta, of Fairfax; one brother, James Rowland Ellington; two grandchildren; one great-grandson.
Funeral services were Friday at Oakton United Methodist Church by Pastor John A. Plummer. Burial will military honors was on Friday at Arlington National cemetery.

Juanita Jones

FRANKLINTON -- Juanita Jones, of 297 Lane’s Road, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at Durham Regional Hospital.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Oxford.

Garland Smith

OXFORD -- Garland Smith, 73, of 213 Orange St., died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at the Granville Medical Center.
Memorial services will be conducted at 4:30 p.m. today at Betts & Son Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Bishop T.E. Woolfolk.
The family will receive visitors at the home.
Arrangements are by Betts & Son Funeral Home of Oxford.

Robert T. Bryan

OXFORD -- Robert Taylor Bryan, 71, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at his home.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothea Niles Bryan; three sons, Robert Taylor Bryan Jr. of Fredericksburg, Va., Ben Lassiter Bryan and John Niles Bryan, both of Oxford; a sister, Sally Bryan Tenhet of Raleigh; a brother, Lynwood S. Bryan of Oxford; and six grandchildren.
He was retired from Brown and Williamson Tobacco Co.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Oxford by the Revs. Fiona Bergstrom and Harrison Simons.
Memorials may be made to the Triangle Hospice, 123 Belle St., Oxford, N.C. 27565.

Lenwood C. Chavis

OXFORD -- Lenwood C. Chavis, 85, of 5092 Antioch Road, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, at Oxford Manor.
He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church where he was a member of the deacon board.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Antioch Baptist Church by the Rev. Nate Thorpe. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving is one brother, Rev. Thomas Chavis of Roxboro.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home.

Craig A. Cherkas

OXFORD -- Craig Alexander Cherkas, 42, of 419 Kingsbury St., died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at his home. He was the son of William M. Cherkas Jr. and the late Yuma Liles Cherkas.
Graveside memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Elmwood cemetery by the Rev. Janice Chalaron.
Surviving, in addition to his father, are his sister, Lisa C. Nelson of Rocky Mount; and a brother, Matt Cherkas.
Visitation will follow the graveside services.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

R.H. ‘Jack’ Clark

BURLINGTON -- R. H. “Jack” Clark, 78, of 1926 W. Front St., Burlington, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at his residence after a brief illness. He was a native of Alamance County and the son of the late John William Clark and Lucy Ellington Clark.
He was retired from AT&T after 37 years of service. He was a member of Christ Memorial Christian Church, a World War II Air Force veteran and a life member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
He was the husband of Doris Page Clark and the late Margie Simpson Clark.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Christ Memorial Christian Church by the Rev. Doug Durham, pastor. Burial will follow at Alamance Memorial Park.
Surviving are his wife, Doris Page Clark of the home; a daughter, Donna Clark Johnson of Henderson; one son, Phillip Lee Clark of Burlington; two sisters, Lois C. Barber of Elon College and Ruth C. Porterfield of Graham; two brothers, James W. Clark and Harold Keith Clark, both of Burlington; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Rich & Thompson Mortuary in Burlington. Other times, they will be at the residence. The body will be taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
Memorials may be made to Christ Memorial Christian Church Building Fund, 2548 S. NC87, Graham, N.C. 27253 or to Hospice of Alamance-Caswell, P.O. Box 2122, Burlington, N.C. 27216.

William K. Gooch

HENDERSON -- Mrs. Willie Kimball Gooch of 215 Young Ave. died Sunday October 1, 2000 at Oxford Manor. A native of Warren County, daughter of the late William Warren and Mary Haywood Kimball, a member of First United Methodist Church of Henderson and a retired bookkeeper for Roses Stores.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday October 6, 2000 from First United Methodist Church of Henderson by the Rev. Charles M. Cook. Burial will follow in Mt. Auburn United Church of Christ cemetery, Warren County.
Mrs. Gooch is survived by her son, Richard Kimball Gooch of Henderson; her three grandchildren, Richard, Christopher and Mary Catherine Brock of Lynn Haven, Fla., a niece, Mary Barclay Cox of High Point; her nephews, J. Craig Allison of Whytheville, Va., H. M. Robinson of Norlina, Hoke Kimball of Raleigh, Bill Kimball of Sanford, Col. J. Allen Kimball of Manson; her brother-in-law and wife, George and Judy Gooch of Henderson. She was predeceased by her daughter, Carolyn Gooch Brock.
The family will receive friends on Thursday October 5 at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Auburn United Church of Christ, Rt. 1, Box 119 A, Manson, NC 27553.

Juanita Jones

FRANKLINTON -- Juanita Jones, 54, of 297 Lanes Road, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at Durham Regional Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wright Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Alvin Sledge. Burial will be in Ilong Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, George Jones; one son, Mickey Jones of Franklinton; three daughters, Nicole Jones, Erica Jones and Joyce Jones, all of the home; her mother, Madeline Hunter Wright of Kittrell; one brother, James Wright of Kittrell; five sisters, Maxine Green and Sheila Terry, both of Kittrell, Gevena Henderson of Oxford, Jacqueline Ellis of Franklinton and Sandra Terry of Butner; and three grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Wright Funeral Home of Oxford.

William C. Smith Sr.

HENDERSON -- William Claude Smith Sr., 57, of 817 Arrow St., Henderson, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, in North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. He was a Davidson County native and the son of the late Andrew C. and Ila Harris Smith.
He was a disabled furniture assembler.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Sunset Gardens by the Rev. Jeff Prewer.
Surviving are a daughter, Sharon S. Woodlief of Henderson; two sons, William C. Smith Jr. of Henderson and Andrew Keith Smith of Lexington; a sister, Geraldine S. Braman of Henderson; three brothers, Charles Henry Smith and Walter R. “Pete” Smith, both of Henderson, and Thomas C. Smith of Eagle River, Ala.; and five grandchildren.
The family received friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of his sister, Geraldine Braman, 817 Arrow St., Henderson.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home of Henderson.

Myeisha T. Taylor and Ieisha T. Taylor

WARREN COUNTY -- Myeisha T. Taylor and Ieisha T. Taylor, infant daughters of Qiana Taylor and Darrell Alston, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at Halifax Memorial Hospital in Roanoke Rapids.
Graveside services will be conducted at 12 p.m. today at the Only Way Church of Christ cemetery in Vaughan. Apostle Clinton Winston of Oxford will officiate, assisted by Bishop Willie Hockaday.
Surviving are their mother, Qiana Taylor of Vaughan; their father, Darrell Alston of Littleton; maternal grandparents, Earnest and Norma Taylor of Vaughan; their paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Alston of Littleton; their great-grandparents, William and Shirley Falcon of Henderson and Ruth Rice of Littleton; and their great-great-grandparents, Bishop Willie Hockaday and Dorothy Hockaday of Littleton and Daisy Taylor of Vaughan.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Service of Warrenton.

Lillian A. Baker

HENDERSON -- Lillian Ayscue Baker, age 70, a resident of 3635 Southerland Mill Road, died Wednesday at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a native of Franklin County and was the daughter of the late Nathan Nathaniel and Nelford Patterson Ayscue.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Mark Head. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
She is survived by one daughter, Joanne Abbott Wirt of Eden, Maryland; four sisters, Dorothy A. Seiple, Edna A. Mosley, and Esther A. Perkinson, all of Henderson, and Katherine A. Ellington of Cary; four brothers, Linwood Ayscue of Roxboro, Sterling Ayscue, Wade Ayscue, and Larry Ayscue, all of Henderson. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda A. Verzaal.
The family will receive friends today night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at her home at 3635 Southerland Mill Road.
Serving as active pallbearers will be her nephews.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

James L. ‘Buck’ Barker

OXFORD -- James L. “Buck” Barker, 93, of 907 College St., died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late Robert A. and Flora Bowdon Barker.
He was a member of Oxford Baptist Church, a retired route dispatcher with McCracken Oil Co. and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dr. J. Steven Bolton. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are one son, James L. “Jim” Barker of Greensboro; one sister, Virginia S. Barker of Oxford; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home.

Myrtle F. Hart

RALEIGH -- Myrtle Ferrell Hart, 97, of Lake Gaston, formerly of Raleigh, died Wednes-day, Oct. 4, 2000, at her home.
Arrangements will be announced later by Blaylock Funeral Home.

Mae Glover Bowlin

HENDERSON -- Mae Glover Bowlin, age 85, a resident of 4635 Old Watkins Road, died Thursday in a local nursing home. She was a native of Vance Co. and was the daughter of the late Melvin Dorsey and Jennie Greenway Glover. She was the widow of David Hugh Bowlin, and was a member of the Peace’s Chapel Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Peace’s Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Rev. Tony Futtrell. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
She is survived by two daughters, Miss Etta Gooch Bowlin of the home and Mrs. Mary Alice B. Stanley, of Henderson; one sister, Mrs. Ella Goochie G. Rowell of Henderson; two grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Friday night at the home at 4635 Old Watkins Road.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Ellen C. Edwards

PHILADELPHIA -- Ellen Crews Edwards, 77, of Philadelphia, Pa., died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at her residence. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Ikey and Ida Crews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cooke Chapel A.M.E.Z. Church by the Rev. Winston Blackwell. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Marjorie Patterson of Smiley, S.C., Rosa Patterson of Philadelphia, Pa.; one stepsister, Dorothy Mae Williams of Henderson; one stepbrother, Billy Jukins of Newport News, Va.; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
The body will be on view today at Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service until taken to the church one hour before the services. The family will receive friends at the residence of Odessa Cooper, 438 Cedar St. in Henderson.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Services.
