Frankie R. Walker

TOWNSVILLE -- Frankie Riggan Walker, 83, of 50 Rice Road, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a native of Vance County and the daughter of the late Jake and Flora Henderson Riggan.
She was a lifelong member of the Tabernacle United Methodist Church where she was a former Sunday school teacher. She was a member of the U.M.W. and the Bessie King Circle. She was the widow of Charlie W. Walker Sr.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Tabernacle United Methodist Church by the Revs. Joyce Day and Henry Lovelace. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Betty W. Hester of Henderson; three sons, Billy Walker, Cliff Walker and John Walker, all of Townsville; one sister, Flora R. Shotwell of Stovall; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the home of Cliff Walker, 9736 Hwy. 39-N.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Chuck Walker, Thomas Hester, J.T. Smith, John Riggan, Mike Reams, Scott Denny and Jake Denny.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Vance County Relay for Life, c/o Lisa Simmons, 725 Horseshoe Bend Road, Henderson, N.C. 27537.
Arrangements are by J.M. White Funeral Home of Henderson.

Lela H. Wilson

BUTNER -- Lela H. Wilson, 85, a resident of 1604 West “B” St., died Saturday, November 17th at Croasdaile Village Retirement Center in Durham.
A native of Danville, Virginia, the widow of Samuel E. Wilson and the daughter of the late Edward Lee and Sula Hinton Hamlen. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Butner, retired from Murdoch Center and was a wonderful homemaker.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Butner by Rev. Lenny Rogers and Rev. Gloria Johnson. Burial will be in Sunset Gardens in Henderson.
Surviving are one daughter, Ruth Wilson Parrish and husband, Jack, of Butner; grandchildren, Starra Parrish of Graham, Thom Parrish of Durham; great-grandchildren, Neil Laney, Preston Laney and several nieces and nephews.
Flowers accepted or memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Disease Foundation, P.O. Box 2914, DUMC, Durham, N.C. 27710.
Visitation was held 7-8:30 p.m. Monday evening at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor and at other times at the home.

Irby B. Womack

CREEDMOOR -- Irby Belch Womack, 91, formerly of 108 North Main St., Creedmoor, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at Oxford Manor Nursing Home in Oxford.
Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. today at Carolina Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Don Brown.
Surviving is one niece.
Visitation will be held from 9 to 10:45 a.m. today prior to the funeral at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor.

Ellis F. Andrews
HENDERSON -- Ellis Foster “Ford” Andrews, 56, of 175 Pete Albert Lane died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a Warren County native and the son of the late James “Jimmy” and Sophia Andrews Sr.
He was educated in the Vance County public schools and was an employee of Lotz Construction for 28 years.
He was a member of Oak Level United Church of Christ, where funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday by the Revs. Leon White and Emmitt Jefferson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two brothers, Lawrence Andrews of Manson and Howard Andrews Sr. of Orange, N.J.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Pallbearers will be nephews. Floral bearers will be nieces.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services.

Lillian G. Blake

HENDERSON -- Lillian Grissom Blake, 88, a resident of Woodlawn Retirement Home and a former resident of 912 Bane Ave., died Tuesday morning, Nov. 20, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.
She was a native of Franklin County, the daughter of the late Edward and Cora Carroll Grissom, and was the widow of Thurston T. Clark and Harold Blake.
She was retired from Acme Supermarket and attended White Memorial United Methodist Church.
Graveside services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Sunset Gardens by the Rev. Jack Jenkins.
The family will receive friends Friday from 10 until 10:30 a.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home.
She is survived by three nephews.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Ladie B.K. Daniel

HENDERSON -- Ladie Barnes Kerley Daniel, 85, of 1275 Park Ave. died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, in a local nursing home. She was a native of Vance County and was the daughter of the late Lewis E. and Sadie Stone Barnes.
She was a retired private-duty nurse and was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she was active in the Christine Jenkins Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Women’s Auxiliary and was active in the Senior Citizens Center.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Rose Chapel of the First United Methodist Church by the Rev. Alan McAlister and the Rev. Danielle Kirkland. Burial will follow in the Union Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery at Kittrell.
She is survived by one daughter, Faye K. Moss of Kittrell; two sons, Ralph Kerley of Kittrell and Ronald B. Kerley of Henderson; one brother, William C. “Billy” Barnes of Henderson; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Ralph “Bob” Kerley Sr., and one daughter, Sylvia K. Mitchell.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Ronnie Kerley, 795 Horseshoe Bend Road.
Serving as active pallbearers will be her grandsons and great-grandsons.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 914, Henderson, N.C. 27536.

Donald W. Dickerson

HENDERSON -- Donald Wayne “Red” Dickerson, 40, a resident of Faulkner Trailer Park, Lot 37, 500 J.P. Taylor Road, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a native of Vance County and was the son of Charles Lewis Dickerson of Henderson and Glenda Ruth Wilkerson Dickerson of Henderson. He was a self-employed carpenter.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Freedom Life Church of God by the Rev. Jeff Prewer. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one daughter, Jennie Marie Dickerson of Henderson; his stepmother, Peggy Partin Dickerson of Henderson; one brother, Danny L. Dickerson of Florida; five sisters, Joanie Inscoe, Jamee Renn, Brenda Gilliam, Barbara Balmer and Tammy Harp, all of Henderson; one stepsister, Tammy Parrish of Henderson; one stepbrother, Terry Partin of Henderson; and his paternal grandmother, Daisy Dickerson of Henderson.
He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Steven Dickerson; his paternal grandfather, George “Bill” Dickerson; and his maternal grandparents, Katie C. and Tom Bullock.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of David and Joanie Inscoe, 463 Welcome Ave.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Mike Elliott, Tim Harp, Bro Williamson, George Dickerson, David Inscoe Jr. and Ricky Collier.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Freedom Life Church of God/Donald Wayne Dickerson Fund, P.O. Box 1543, Henderson, N.C. 27536.

Ross Felts

ROSWELL, Ga. -- Ross Felts, 87, of Roswell, formerly of Cainville, Ill., died Monday, Nov. 19, 2001. He was the son of Benjamin Troy and Ora Crain Felts.
He was a Navy veteran and a retired security officer with Sangamo Electric.
Surviving are his wife, Florence Wilson Felts; two daughters, Karrol Ward of Roswell and Barbara Finley of Easley, S.C.; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel. Dr. Greg Barr will officiate. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the East Lawn Memorial Park in Herrin, Ill., with the Rev. Max Johnson officiating.
Donations may be made to the American Diabetes. Association, One Corporate Square, Suite 127, Atlanta, Ga. 30329.
Arrangements are by Northside Chapel Funeral Directors of Roswell.

Roscoe B. Fitts

MIAMI -- Roscoe B. Fitts, 87, of Miami, formerly of Ridgeway, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, at Parkway Regional Medical Center in Miami.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Burchette Chapel United Church of Christ. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Luevinnia Fitts; nine children, Mary Taylor, Eddie Fitts, Beatrice Sherman, Ida Williams, John Fitts, George Fitts, Eleanor Fitts, Rebecca McKenize and Melinda Fitts of Miami; 28 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Poitier Funeral Home of Miami and R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Martin L. Grissom Jr.

HENDERSON -- The Rev. Martin Luther Grissom Jr., 80, of 2555 Vicksboro Road died Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, at his home. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Martin Luther Grissom Sr. and Lenora Jane Ayscue Grissom.
He was a retired Episcopal minister and a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Ridgeway. He was a Mason. Recently, he published “Tergina,” a children’s book.
Memorial services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Flowers Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Lee Cutair.
Surviving are two daughters, Melissa G. Maglione of Louisville, Ky., and Sylvia G. Smith of Cranston, R.I.; a son, Martin L. Grissom III of Old Lyme, Conn.; five sisters, Emma G. Hoyle and Frances G. Hoyle, both of Henderson, Ava G. Swain of Lake Norman, Madge G. Benton of Whiteville, and Dorothy G. Jefferson of Colonial Heights, Va.; a brother, John L. Grissom of Henderson; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends immediately after the service.
Flowers are omitted. Memorials may be made to the Church of the Good Shepherd, c/o the Rev. Lee Cutair, 203 John St., Louisburg, N.C. 27549.

James L. Pierce

HENDERSON -- James L. Pierce, 81, of 146 Southern Ave. died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a native of Buckham County, Va., and was the son of the late Ben Archie and Sally Going Pierce. He was the widower of Nell C. Pierce.
He was a truck mechanic for Ford Motor Co. in Charlotte for 40 years, a Navy veteran of World War II, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a volunteer at the Senior Center of Oxford.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Rev. Robert Greene Jr. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. in Fairview cemetery in Roanoke, Va.
Surviving are his daughters, Linda P. Gwaltney of Idaho, Deborah Dawn P. Windman and Jamie P. Brown, both of Henderson, and Paula P. Falcon of Miami; his sister, Alice P. Shelton of Newport News, Va.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Doris P. Bradshaw.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

Rev. Martin L. Grissom Jr.

HENDERSON -- The Rev. Martin Luther Grissom Jr., 80, of 2555 Vicksboro Road, Henderson, N.C., died Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, at his home.

Benton of Whiteville, N.C., and Dorothy G. Jefferson of Colonial Heights, Virginia; a brother, John L. Grissom of Henderson; thirteen grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

Frances T. McKnight

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Frances Thompson McKnight, 84, of 306 Hawkins Drive died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, in Schenectady. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Roy and Mary Ann Judkins Thompson.
She worked many years before retirement at the old Burkart Mill.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Welcome Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Saint J. Silver. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are her daughter, Ruth Edwards of Schenectady; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
The body will be on view from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

George W. Perry

HENDERSON -- George W. Perry, 58, of 2814 N.C. 39 died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

Thelma C. Travis

HENDERSON -- Thelma Capps Travis, 79, a resident of 4336 Dabney Road, died Wednesday in Guardian Care Nursing Home. She was a native of Vance County and was the daughter of the late Julian and Lottie Robinson Capps. She was the widow of the late William Henry “Bill” Travis. She was a member of the Grace Baptist Church of Henderson.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Eastside Baptist Church by the Rev. Aubrey Florence. Burial will be in the Travis family cemetery in the Dabney community.
Surviving are three daughters, Judy T. Norwood, Jo Ann T. Parrish and Frances T. Buchanan, all of Henderson; one son, Arthur H. “Skeeter” Travis of Henderson; three sisters, Velma C. Wilson, Sally C. Granger and Martha M. Moss, all of Henderson; nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Jerry R. Parrish Jr., Paul H. Travis, Donnie W. Parrish, Thomas T. Travis Jr., Mike L. Travis and Scott Wilkins.
The family will receive friends Friday night from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Frances and Larry Buchanan, 4072 Dabney Road.
The J.M. White Funeral Home is in charge of services.

Bessie B. Bullock

HENDERSON -- Bessie B. Bullock, 86, of Guardian Care Nursing Center died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Rev. Moses Bullock and Adlene Hargrove Bullock.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Saints Delight Holy Church by the Rev. Harold Jackson. Burial will be in the church cemetery
Surviving is one brother, James Bullock of Manson.
The family will receive visitors at the residence of Samuel and Freddie Pearson, 230 W. Creek Road.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home.

Effie M. Dortch

RIDGEWAY -- Effie Munn Dortch, 87, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, at the Senior Citizens Home in Henderson. She was a Warren County native and the daughter of the late Herbert Munn and Elizabeth O’Mary Munn.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and former employee of Woolard’s Drug Co. in Henderson. She was preceded in death by her sons, Walter H. Dortch and Robert Dortch, and her husband, Henry Albert Dortch.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are a brother, Jim Munn of Sacramento, Calif.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Building Fund.
The family will not meet at the funeral home.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home.

Louise T. Edmonds

OXFORD -- Louise Thorpe Edmonds, 70, of 111 Alston Court died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001, at Granville Medical Center.
She was a member of Morning Star Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Morning Star Baptist Church by the Rev. Adolphus Smith. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.
Surviving are six sons, Lawrence Edmonds of Baltimore and Charlie Edmonds, McDonald Edmonds, Roy Lee Edmonds, James McCoy Edmonds and Ellis Edmonds, all of the home; one daughter, Antoinette “Angel” Edmonds of Oxford; four sisters, Gertrude Boyette of Baltimore and Ella Mae Williams, Essie Pearl Smith and Bernice Arrington, all of Oxford; 24 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Wright Funeral Home.
