Mary Eckroth
Mary Eckroth, 91, 206 15th St. N.W., Mandan, died March 31, 1997, in the Mandan hospital. Services will be held at noon today at Church of St. Joseph, Mandan, with the Rev. Al Leary officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Mary was born Oct. 15, 1905, in Morton County, the daughter of George and Angeline (Leingang) Wetsch. She was raised and educated in St. Anthony. On Nov. 28, 1929, she married Joseph Eckroth in St. Anthony. Mary was employed as a cook at Mandan Elks Club for 10 years.

She is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Margaret and Ferdinand Blotske, Selfridge, and Rosemary Leingang, Mandan; three sons and daughters-in-law, Martin and Angie, Gresham, Ore., Raymond and Gladys, Dallas, Ore., and Louie and Vi, Lodi, Calif.; 19 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Clemens and Ione, Minot; and two sisters, Caroline Schaff, Bismarck, and Margaret Gangl, St. Anthony.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph, who died June 1, 1979; one son, Pete; one grandson, Jerry Blotske; three brothers; and two sisters.

Lois Gunn
WATERTOWN, S.D. -- Lois Gunn, 73, Watertown, died April 17, 1997. Services will be held Wednesday at Wight and Fox Funeral Chapel, Watertown, with burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, Howard; one daughter, Susan Carlson, Bismarck, N.D.; and three sisters, Frances Thornton, Sulpher Springs, Texas, Merle Smith, Eugene, Ore., and Jeanette Doss, Indianapolis, Ind.

Arden Markestad
MADDOCK -- Arden Markestad, 78, Devils Lake, died April 17, 1997, in the Devils Lake hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at North Viking Lutheran Church, Maddock, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia. (Nelson Funeral Home, Maddock)

Sherry Fink
Sherry Fink, 49, Bismarck, died April 18, 1997, in Bismarck of natural causes. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Church of the Ascension. Further arrangements are pending at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan.

Hazel Erickson
NEW ENGLAND -- Hazel E. Erickson, 77, New England, died April 18, 1997, in a Dickinson nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Monday at Our Redeemers Lutheran Church, New England, with burial in Rainy Butte Lutheran Cemetery, rural New England.

She is survived by three sisters, Fern Belland, New England, Clara Bayman, Warden, Wash., and Stella Hughes, Clarkson, Wash. (Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson)

Milbern Arneson
DICKINSON -- Milbern Arneson, 86, Dickinson, died April 18, 1997, in a Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Monday at Pierce Congregational United Church of Christ, rural Scranton, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by one brother, Edwin, Dickinson; and two sisters, Claribel Almquist, Rockford, Ill., and Ellen Mae Arneson, Dickinson. (Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson)

Ida Roller
HARVEY -- Ida Roller, 90, Valley City, formerly of Harvey, died April 19, 1997, in the Valley City nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Assembly of God Church, Harvey. Further arrangements are pending at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey.

Leon Ronning
MINOT -- Leon Ronning, 84, Minot, died April 17, 1997, in a Minot nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Christ Lutheran Church, Minot, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot.

Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. today at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Leon was born Sept. 15, 1912, in Ryder, the son of Marius and Anna (Kleven) Ronning. He was raised and educated in Ryder and graduated from Ryder High School. He then entered the U.S. Army and served during World War II. On July 26, 1942, he married Opal Halquist in Minot. They moved to Minot in 1948 and he worked for NW Sales. He later worked for the John Moses Veterans Hospital in Minot for 20 years, retiring in 1972. After his retirement he remained in Minot.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, American Legion and Elks, all of Minot. He was a life member of the Minot Chapter of Disabled American Veterans and was a past State Commander of Disabled American Veterans.

He is survived by his wife, Opal; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Sharon; two grandchildren, Stephen Ronning, Mandan, and Keri Ronning, Fargo; one sister, Huldah Tiller, Minot; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Clara Dobrinski, Elma Warner and Myrtle Hanson; and one brother, Norman.

William Schmollinger
William "Bill" Schmollinger, 77, 107 E. Bowen Ave., died April 17, 1997, at his home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Thomas R. Marcis Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck, with military rites provided by American Legion Post No. 133 of Turtle Lake.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Monday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.

Bill was born July 1, 1920, at Butte, a son of Henry and Justina (Hiem) Schmollinger. He grew up on the family farm in Medicine Hill Township, and farmed up to the time he entered the U.S. Army at Fort Snelling, Minn., on Oct. 15, 1942. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, World War II Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal with one bronze service star, and the American Theater Service Medal. He served until Jan. 10, 1946. He returned to the Turtle Lake area and farmed until he went to work for Lindtiigen Construction Co. of Turtle Lake. He worked there for over 39 years, retiring in 1985. He had resided in Turtle Lake and Bismarck.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Bismarck. He had belonged to Bismarck Eagles for the last 25 years and Turtle Lake American Legion for 50 years.

He is survived by one brother, Alvin, Lodi, Calif.; four sisters and one brother-in-law, Lydia Miller, Harvey, and Violet and Kenneth Turner, Verna Grenz and Darlene Maxey, all of Lodi; several nieces and nephews; and his special companion, Elsie Hagge, Bismarck.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers; and one sister.

Hulda Kosanke
Hulda Kosanke, 88, American Falls, Idaho, died April 19, 1997, in Idaho. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, Bismarck. Further arrangements are pending at Eastgate Funeral Service.

Ida Roller
Ida Roller, 90, Valley City, formerly of Harvey, died April 19, 1997, in the Valley City nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Assembly of God Church, Harvey, with burial in Sunnyside Cemetery, Harvey.

She is survived by two daughters, Alice Undem, Valley City, and Idell Lesmeister, Harvey; two sons, Arlie, Harvey, and Leo Jr., Livingston, Mont.; one sister, Dena Roller, Harvey; and one brother, Ted Hirschkorn, Livingston. (Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey)

Lucille Duffy
Lucille Duffy, 84, St. Vincent's Care Center, died April 19, 1997, in the nursing home. Arrangements are pending at Eastgate Funeral Service.

Luella Christensen
STEELE -- Luella Christensen, 88, Steele, died April 20, 1997, in the nursing home. Arrangements are pending at Eastgate Steele Memorial Chapel.

Russell Baker
DRISCOLL -- Russell Edward Baker, 80, Driscoll, died April 19, 1997, in the Mandan hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church, Driscoll. Further arrangements are pending at Eastgate Funeral Service.

Lillian Madsen
JAMESTOWN -- Lillian C. Madsen, 88, Jamestown, died April 19, 1997, in the Jamestown nursing home. Arrangements are pending at Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown.

Sherry Fink
Sherry Fink, 49, Bismarck, died April 18, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Church of the Ascension, Bismarck, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, where a rosary will be said at 7:30 tonight.

Sherry was born June 22, 1947, in Minot, the daughter of Delbert and Evelyn (Pyne) Marum. She was raised and educated in Minot. She graduated from Ryan High School in 1965, and worked at the Sears Store in Minot. On Sept. 6, 1969, she married Michael Fink of Bismarck and moved to Bismarck. She has been a resident of the Baptist Home in Bismarck for the past four years.

She is survived by one daughter, Tera Fink, Irvine, Calif.; two sons, Troy and Tad, both of Bismarck; her father, Delbert Marum, Minot; two sisters, Vickie Kramer, Ritzville, Wash., and Jackie Rustad, Garrison; and four brothers and one sister-in-law, Michael, Bismarck, Joseph, Tempe, Ariz., Randy and Barb, Fargo, and Brian, Bloomington, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Evelyn (Pyne) Marum.

Luella Christensen
Luella Christensen, 88, Tuttle, died April 20, 1997, in the Steele nursing home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at English Lutheran Church, Tuttle, with the Rev. John Norby officiating. Burial will be in Tuttle Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Eastgate Steele Memorial Chapel, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Luella was born May 24, 1908, in Maddock. She was the daughter of Martin and Rosanna (Gilbertson) Berg. After graduating from Robinson High School, Luella attended Ellendale Teachers College. She taught in the Arlington School District north of Tuttle. On Aug. 29, 1928, she married Fred Christensen in Steele. Fred and Luella purchased land in Clear Lake Township. Buildings were moved from north of Tuttle for their farmsite. Fred died May 12, 1970, from a heart ailment. Luella remained on the farm with Phyllis and Marvin nearby to offer assistance whenever needed. In June of 1982, at the age of 73, Luella suffered a stroke, paralyzing her right side. After extensive therapy, she regained her speech and was able to walk with help. In 1986, she entered Golden Manor Nursing Home in Steele.

With faith, patience and determination, Luella adjusted to her affliction. Her family will always remember her smile and pleasant personality. Luella was a faithful and devoted member of Tuttle English Lutheran Church, and an honorary member of Marie Circle. She enjoyed socializing with friends and family, reading, gardening, keeping scrapbooks and photo albums were favorite pastimes.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and Jay Bergh, Hallock, Minn., and Phyllis and Marvin Dehne, Tuttle; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Genora Kittleson, Bagley, Minn., Mabel and Clarence Solheim, Steele, Evelyn and Oscar Sorhus, Seattle, and Edna Heimer, Arlington, Wash.; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Gerhard and June Berg, Seattle, Harry Berg, Robinson, and Henry and Lydia Berg, Bismarck.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant son; a granddaughter; two sisters; and two brothers.

Catherine Nelson
Catherine Alvina Nelson, 73, 519 N. 19th St., died April 20, 1997, in the Mandan hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, with the Rev. Al Soderberg officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Catholic Daughter rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Thursday, followed by a vigil service.

Catherine was born Aug. 24, 1924, at Charlesberg, Wis., the daughter of Oscar and Delia (Egeren) Mertens. She grew up and attended schools in Charlesberg. She worked at a shoe factory in Wisconsin. She met Howard F. Nelson in Oregon. They were married June 30, 1948, in Charlesberg. They moved to Bismarck in 1953. Howard died Sept. 26, 1995. She had worked at F.W. Woolworth in Bismarck for 20 years and at ARC for 10 years.

She was a member of Catholic Daughters for 31 years.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Patty and Roger Remmick Jr., and Mary and Douglas Lingert, all of Bismarck; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Howard and Marge Jr., Santa Rosa, Calif., David and Rosemary, Bismarck, Paul and Carol, and Mike, all of Denver; one sister, Gert Loose, Wisconsin; one brother, Tony, Troutdale, Ore.; 13 grandchildren, Roxanne and her husband, Ken Schoffill, Sharon and her husband, Tim Ell, Tammy Nelson, Michelle Nelson, Eric Nelson, Adam Lingert, Catherine Lingert, Daniel Lingert, Jessica Lingert, Ryan Lingert, Sami Nelson, Joe Nelson, Courtney Lee Priela; and four great-grandchildren, Sara, Timmy, Davie Lee and Darrien.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one sister, Bernice Stark.

We will always love you Grandma.

Russell Baker
DRISCOLL -- Russell Edward Baker, 80, Driscoll, died April 19, 1997, in the Mandan hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church, Driscoll, with the Rev. Wilfred Hanson officiating. Burial will be in Driscoll Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, and will continue from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Eastgate Steele Memorial Chapel. Visitation also will be at the church one hour before services.

Russell was born March 15, 1917, in Bismarck, the son of Ed and Dellia (Defenbough) Baker. He was raised and educated in the Tuttle area. Russell married Virgina Vold in February 1942. They farmed north of Driscoll where they raised sheep and pigs. Virgina died in 1974. Russell still farmed until his health failed in the last three months.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by three sons, Ralph ``Butch," Bismarck, Alan, Driscoll, and Lanny, Rapid City, S.D.; seven grandchildren, Rick, Caroline, Mike, Troy, Travis, Jesse and Jerry; three great-grandchildren, Aaron, Kaitlin and Mary; one brother, Lawrence, Pontiac, Ill.; and a special friend, Lila Wetzel.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virgina.

Mike Berger
Mike G. Berger, 91, 107 Second Ave. N.E., Mandan, died April 21, 1997, in his home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with burial in St. Anthony's Cemetery, St. Anthony. The Rev. Al Leary will officiate.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish vigil will be said at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, followed by a St. Anthony Verein rosary at 8.

Mike G. Berger was born July 11, 1905, in St. Anthony, the son of George and Margaret (Miller) Berger. Mike was raised and educated in the St. Anthony area. He married Barbara Helbling, Oct. 22, 1929, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, St. Anthony. They farmed in the St. Anthony area until 1960 when they moved to Mandan. Mike worked as a guard for the North Dakota State Prison for seven years then, in 1970, he moved to Denver where he worked part-time as a security guard in a bank. He moved back to Mandan in 1988.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Virginia, Bismarck, and Cliff and Susan, Mandan; three daughters and one son-in-law, Sister Blandine, Texas, Janice Wise, Los Angeles, and Eunice and Dave Castor, Denver; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, George, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and Adam, Mandan; and three sisters and brothers-in-law, Magdalene and Phil Stoltz, Seattle, Clara and Adam Berger, Flasher, and Pauline and Henry Hoffman, Mandan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Barbara, who died Sept. 9, 1988; one son, Eugene; three daughters, Martina, Leona and Ella Mae; five brothers, Nick, Marcus, Tim, Johnny and Jack; and two sisters, Francis and Katherine.

Hattie Greb
VALLEY CITY -- Hattie Greb, 96, Valley City, died April 20, 1997, in the Valley City hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Valley City, with burial in Memory Gardens, Valley City.

She is survived by five daughters, June Hannig and Arlene Johnson, both of Valley City, Delores Maine, Kelso, Wash., Joyce Holden, Bismarck, and Clarice Overbo, Moorhead, Minn. (Peterson-Johnson-Schuldt Funeral Home, Valley City)

Theresa Kaufman
RICHARDTON -- Theresa J. Kaufman, 89, Richardton, died April 19, 1997, in the Richardton hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. MDT Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Richardton, with burial in the church cemetery.

She is survived by two sons, Nicholas, Pierre, S.D., and William, Lyons, Ore.; two daughters, Shirley Schubert, Richardton, and Gladys Kuntz, Dickinson; two brothers, William Garecht, Alameda, Calif., and Nicholas Garecht, Stockton, Calif.; and two sisters, Eleanor Forster, Castro Valley, Calif., and Nelda DeAskqwith, Hayward, Calif. Marie Rudel
FESSENDEN -- Marie Rudel, 86, Fessenden, died April 19, 1997, in her home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Church of the Nazarene, Fessenden, with burial in Hillside Cemetery, Fessenden.

She is survived by one daughter, Dianne Duffy, Everett, Wash.; and one brother, LaVerne Williams, Dewey, Ariz. (Nelson Funeral Home, Fessenden)
