Howard Coughlin
Howard R. Coughlin, 73, 407 Piccadilly Circle, Bismarck, died March 23, 1998, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at First United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Kermit Culver and Mark Coughlin officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with full military rites provided by V.F.W. Post No. 1326.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. today at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Howard was born on Feb. 5, 1925 at Portal, to Bert and Dora Coughlin. He attended grade school at Truax Traer Mines, where the family lived. They moved to Kenmare, where Howard finished school. On July 23, 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served as a rifleman in the southwest Pacific with the First Infantry Regiment, 6th Division. He was wounded in Oro Bay, New Guinea, in August of 1944, and received the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Purple Heart, and Bronze Star. He was discharged on Oct. 20, 1945.

He married Maxine Hagen, of Norma, N.D., on Nov. 5, 1945 in Sidney, Mont. and they made their home in Minot for 20 years. In 1951, he received his B.S. Degree in Business Education at Minot State University. He worked at Minot Air Force Base for Eickhoff Construction Co., from 1951-1966. Howard was high school principal from 1966-1968 at Riverdale High School, and superintendent of Pettibone High School for 21 years, from 1968-1989. Howard loved his students are Pettibone High School. He had such good rapport with them and they with him. Howard and Maxine retired in 1989, and they moved to Bismarck.

He loved hunting and fishing with his family and friends. He had a wonderful sense of humor throughout life and during his illness. He was a warm and caring person to all those who knew him. Upon retiring, he devoted much time to camping and woodworking. He especially loved his grandsons and enjoyed going camping with all the families.

Howard is survived by his wife, Maxine; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Laurie, Gilbert, Ariz., and Greg and Judy, Chisago City, Minn.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Dennis Hehr, Kulm, and Debra and Randy Kottsick, Mandan; six grandsons, David, Ryan and Kenny Hehr, Christopher and Kevin Kottsick, and Chuck Bogard; two brothers, Raymond "Corky" Coughlin, Williston, and Merlin Coughlin, Kenmare; and three sisters, Dolores McConnell, Kenmare, Delphine Brant, Denver, and Nancy Gjevre, Devils Lake; and many special nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Marvin; and two sisters, Ruth Murray Morrow and Evelyn Palmer.

Dolores Schaff
Dolores J. Schaff, 49, Sauk Rapids, Minn., formerly of Bismarck, died March 23, 1998, in her home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sauk Rapids, with burial in the church cemetery.

She is survived by her mother, Clara Schaff, Sauk Rapids; six sisters, Rose Sobek, Coon Rapids, Emma Oscarson, Denver, Maggie Barrios, Coto de Caza, Calif., Donna Anderson, Madison, Wis., Sandra Schaff, Arcata, Calif., and Deborah Schaff-Johnson, Poway, Calif.; and three brothers, David, Portland, Ore., Richard, Minneapolis, and Jacob Jr., Palm Springs, Calif. Mary West
Mary Lou West, 71, Billings, Mont., formerly of Mandan, died of cancer recently in her home. Memorial services were held Wednesday at Michelotti, Sawyers and Nordquist Alderson Chapel, Billings, with burial in Mountview Cemetery.

She is survived by two sons, Robert, Vancouver, British Columbia, and Don, Denver; and one daughter, Suzanne Grooms, Broken Arrow, Okla.

Louise Ottmar
ELGIN -- Louise Ottmar, 84, Elgin, died March 25, 1998, in the Elgin nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MST Saturday at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Elgin, with burial in the church cemetery.

She is survived by one son, Odell, Bismarck; one daughter, Sheila Ottmar, Jamestown; and five brothers, Ted Maas, Richardton, Henry Maas, Woodland, Calif., Harry Maas, Hebron, Clarence Maas, Los Angeles, Calif., and Gilbert Maas, Bismarck. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Elgin)

JAMESTOWN -- Clyde J. Grubbs Jr., 66, Jamestown, died March 24, 1998, in Fargo. Services will be held at a later date.

Dr. Vane P. George Jr., 72, Louisville, Colo., formerly of Bismarck, died March 23, 1998, in Louisville. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Boulder Valley Christian Church, Louisville.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra; four sons, Vane, Sioux Falls, S.D., Vincent, San Diego, Calif., Robert, Naperville, Ill., and James, St. Charles, Ill.; three daughters, Dr. Valerie George, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Victoria Bruno, Aberdeen, S.D., and Vanessa George, Bromfield, Colo.; and one sister, Virginia George, Bismarck. MOTT -- Karnes H. Burwick, 78, Mott, died March 24, 1998, in the Mott nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MST Saturday at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Mott, with burial at 1:30 p.m. at Daglum Cemetery, rural South Heart.

He is survived by one son, Kurtis, Mott; one daughter, Karen Kibbel, Mott; one brother, Oliver, Dickinson; and five sisters, Lena Heick, Hebron, Florence Tessier, Belfield, Geneva Nelson and Irene Vukelic, both of Bismarck, and Bernice Gaydos, Minot.

STANTON -- John Boyko, 95, Stanton, died March 24, 1998, in his home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Saturday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Stanton, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Hertha; two sons, Clyde, Stanton, and Noel, Bismarck; one brother, Dan, Ruso; and four sisters, Anna Zabrosky, Coeur D'alene, Idaho, Kathrine Stevens, Twenty Nine Palms, Calif., Agnes Werbitsky, Butte, and Helen Anderson, Minot. (Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen)

WILLISTON -- Willard Webster, 86, Williston, died March 24, 1998, in a Minot hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Union Church, Williston. Further arrangements are pending at Everson Funeral Home, Williston.

Vera Park
Vera E. Park, 91, cherished mother and grandmother, passed away March, 1, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, in the Chapel at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, with the Rev. Jeannette Hickman officiating. Her cremains will be interred at a later date at Bathgate Cemetery, Bathgate.

Vera was born April 24, 1906, in Bathgate, to Fred and Mary (Ritchie) Howard. She was raised and educated at Bathgate. She was the last surviving member of a family of 14 children, including one half-brother. Vera married Scott Park on Dec. 5, 1928, and they farmed near Hamilton. In 1944, they moved to Bathgate when Scott accepted the position of Standard Oil Bulk Agent and they continued to farm their land.

She was very active in the community and the Presbyterian Church, serving as deacon, elder, choir member, and Ladies Circle member. She was a 50-year member of Order of Eastern Star, serving twice as Worthy Matron, while in Bathgate. She also worked as a cook in the public school system and an aid at the Pioneer rest home.

Vera was interested in all sports. She pursued her bowling interest into her 80's, continuing to score 200 point games for which she received many trophies and awards. She enjoyed baking and especially making donuts and holiday fruitcake. Her love of needlework has left her family with many beautiful afghans. Most of all, she loved and enjoyed her family. Scott passed away in 1986, and Vera moved to Bismarck to be near her daughter and family. She spent the summer months in Bismarck and the winter months in Mesa, Ariz. In July 1997, she entered a Bismarck nursing home.

Grateful to have shared her life are one daughter and son-in-law, Geraldine "Germ" and Robert "Bob" Morrison, Bismarck; two sons and daughters-in-law, H. Scott and Moonyeen Park, Pagoda Springs, Colo., and Ritchie and Shelley Park, Royston, British Columbia, Canada; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Scott; her siblings; and one grandchild, Donald Morrison. (Perry Funeral Home, Mandan)

Ervin Haase
NEW LEIPZIG -- Ervin Curtis Haase, 72, New Leipzig, died Feb. 26, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital of complications from lymphoma. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at Christus Congregational United Church of Christ, New Leipzig, with the Rev. John Amundson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with full military rites provided by Baesler-Achtenberg American Legion Post No. 211.

Visitation will be at Hertz Brothers Funeral Home on Wednesday, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

Pallbearers will be Larry Baesler, Richard Baesler, Ross Pastian, Ervin Schiermeister, Leon Krause, Leo Schiermeister, Darren Benneweis and Jayson Furstenau. All friends are considered honorary pallbearers.

Ervin was born to Adam and Emelia (Schiermeister) Haase at New Leipzig on March 5, 1925. He attended rural schools and received his high school education in New Leipzig. Inducted into the service in 1944, Ervin served two years in the U.S. Army during World War II. Ervin married Esther Imhoff on Oct. 28, 1951. They moved to Hazelton. Later they returned to the New Leipzig area, farming and raising livestock up to the time of his illness.

Ervin was a member of Christus Congregational U.C.C. and the American Legion. He enjoyed family life, especially visiting with his four grandchildren. His other interests included playing cards with his friends and watching sporting events on TV.

Ervin is survived by his wife, Esther; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sheryl and Grant Daniels, New Leipzig, and Sharon and Alan Herner, Mott; four grandchildren, Clay and Stacey Daniels and Justin and Shantel Herner; and two sisters, Thelma Palmberg, Velva, and Alta Faye Benneweis, Cavalier. Arnold Liebelt
CHASELEY -- Arnold Liebelt, 81, Chaseley, died March 1, 1998, in a Harvey hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at Trinity Bethany Lutheran Church, Harvey. Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Harvey.

He is survived by his wife, Monica; four sons, Ellary, Lidgerwood, Melvin, West Fargo, Kenneth, Harvey, and Craig, Colorado Springs, Colo.; two daughters, Bonnie Ringstad and Lanette Johnson, both of Casselton; four brothers, Ray and Helmuth, both of Harvey, Marvin, Sayre, Penn., and LeRoy, West Yellowstone; and five sisters, Edna Ebach and Linda Lamm, both of Harvey, Eileen Haugen, Fessenden, Verna Martin, Carrington, and Ardella Kensok, Chaffee. Peder Tveito
NEW ROCKFORD -- Peder Tveito, 83, New Rockford, died March 1, 1998, at his home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Grandfield Lutheran Church, rural Sheyenne. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys; one son, Gerald, Linton; three daughters, Beverly Rupprecht, Thief River Falls, Minn., Carol Wahl, Strasburg, Colo., and Jeanette Metcalf, Beaconfield, Quebec, Canada; two sisters, Thelma Lindstrom, Sheyenne, and Ida Tedrow, New Rockford; and three brothers, Jens, New Rockford, Gerhard, Mandan, and Ervin, Hayward, Calif.
