Mae Fairaizl, 84, Mandan, died June 15, 2001, in a Fargo hospital. Arrangements are pending at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.

Henry Gerving
NEW SALEM -- Henry Gerving, 67, New Salem, died June 14, 2001, in the Mandan hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Monday at Zion Lutheran Church, New Salem, with the Rev. Loren Strum officiating. Burial will be in Otter Creek Cemetery, northwest of New Salem. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m.-noon Monday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, New Salem, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Henry was born Nov. 26, 1933, at Youngtown, the son of Ben and Carolina (Opp) Gerving. He attended Otter Creek schools and lived his entire life, from the age of 12, on the family farm northwest of New Salem. He married Betty Fischer on June 9, 1963, at the Congregational church in Beulah. Henry loved the land dearly and was happiest when he could be outdoors, whether working on the farm, trapping or hunting. He is survived by his wife, Betty; two daughters, Carolina Gerving and Betty Lou Gerving, both of New Salem; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Brian and Shelly, Mandan, Henry James and Lisa, Fort Hood, Texas, and Ben, New Salem; four grandchildren, Bailey, Brandon, Christopher and Mathew Gerving; and two sisters and one brother-in-law, Emma Huber and Lloyd, New Salem, and Esther Gerving, Hazen. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters and three brothers.

Josephine Gustafson
DEVILS LAKE -- Josephine Gustafson, 96, Devils Lake, died June 12, 2001, in the Devils Lake care center. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, with burial in Lakeview Cemetery, Kenmare, on Monday.

Betty Lou Herman
BEULAH -- Betty Lou Herman, 66, Beulah, died June 13, 2001, in the Fort Yates hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Beulah, with the Rev. Charles Zins officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-6 p.m. Sunday at Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah. A vigil service will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday at the church. Betty Lou was born Aug. 12, 1934, at Beulah, a daughter of David J. and Rosena (Unruh) Huber. She was raised and educated in Beulah, graduating from Beulah High School in 1953. She attended Minot State Teachers College, receiving her teaching degree in 1955. On July 10, 1957, she married Jerome Herman and they lived in Beulah their entire married lives. Betty loved to sew, cook, and was a very talented painter. She also loved spending time at the lake and was an avid dart player who participated in many state dart tournaments. Betty enjoyed playing bingo and had many "bingo buddies." Her children and grandchildren always came first in her life. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Beulah. The family prefers memorials to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Jerome; three daughters and sons-in-law, Renee and Gene Schaff, Maple Grove, Minn., Laura and Delry Schwalbe, Killdeer, and June Herman and her husband, Miles Merwin, M.D., Aliso Viejo, Calif.; five grandchildren, Kyle, Michael and Sean Schwalbe, and Camille and Stephen Merwin; one brother, Arthur Huber, D.D.S., Astoria, Ore.; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Leona and Lane Milde, Ocala, Fla., Irene and Gil Edmiston, Cheyenne, Wyo., Alta and Lou Coffin, Cedaredge, Colo., Delores and the Rev. Milton Ost, Albert Lea, Minn., and Wilma and Rudy Kwak, Mulberry, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her infant twin siblings, Rosena and David; and two brothers, Oscar and Ervin Huber.

ASHLEY -- Lenora Ritter Mayer Kauk, 80, Ashley, died June 13, 2001, in the Ashley hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church, Ashley, with burial in the church cemetery. She is survived by three sons, Richard, Rapid City, S.D., Donald, Ashley, and Vernon, Turpin, Okla.; three daughters, Ruby Moore, Bismarck, Janice Rohne, Benson, Minn., and Sheila Lobsinger, Fargo; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Sadie Peterson
PETTIBONE -- Sadie R. Peterson, 95, Pettibone, died June 12, 2001, in a Lilburn, Ga., care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Eddy Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Jamestown. She is survived by her daughter, Ruth Thompson, Tucker, Ga.; her son, Glen, Barton Mills, England; and one granddaughter.

Frank Schank Sr.
DICKINSON -- Frank J. Schank Sr., 85, Dickinson, died June 15, 2001, in his home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Monday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson.

Thomas Shaw
Thomas B. Shaw, 88, Minot, died June 13, 2001, in his home. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, rural Minot. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-noon today and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Thomas Family Funeral Home, MInot. Thomas was born July 24, 1912, in Kenmare, to Arlland and Nettie (Sissen) Shaw. He was raised and educated in Aitken, Minn., graduating from Aitken High School in 1930. He moved back to North Dakota and lived in the Velva/Sawyer area. He married Daisy Forsman, March 18, 1934, in Minot. He was employed at the Truax-Traer Coal Mines in Velva and Consolidated Coal Mines in Stanton for 36 years. He retired in 1976. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot. He was a life member of the United Mine Workers Union, and a past member of the Eagles and Moose clubs. His hobbies included reading, gardening and hunting. He is survived by his wife, Daisy; three daughters and one son-in-law, Norma Knutson, Minot, Shirley Rogers, Minot, and Diana and Arthur Varty, Minot; her grandchildren, Glenn and Darwin Knutson, Michael and David Rogers, Greg, Scott and David Pretzer, Steve, Tom and Bill Varty, Carla McKay, Valerie Rathjen, Brenda Blair, Susan Frolick, LaRae Kuusisto and Nancy Baker; 30 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Inez Pretzer; his grandson, Wayne Knutson; three sisters, Sylvia Long, Marvel Cook and Lela Andersen; and four brothers, Orly, Lynn, Jack and Grant Shaw.

Al Stein
Al Stein, 69, Glendale, Ariz., died June 14, 2001, in a Glendale hospital. Services will be held at Heritage Funeral Home, Glendale. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; four sons, Arlin, Brian, Kevin and Alden, all of Arizona; two step-children, Rich and Vicki, both of Arizona; his grandchildren; two sisters, Clara Miller, Mandan, and Jeannette Straub, Bismarck; and his brothers, Richard, Mandan, and Jim, San Diego, Calif.

Arne Torgerson
WILLISTON -- Arne Torgerson, 73, Williston, died June 14, 2001, in a Minot hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church, Williston, with burial in Hillside Memory Gardens, Williston. He is survived by his wife, Myrtle; and one brother, Palmer. Dennis Arnold
STEELE -- Dennis J. Arnold, 59, Steele, died June 14, 2001. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Steele, with the Rev. Paul Tjostem officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at Eastgate Steele Chapel. Dennis was born April 15, 1942, at Maddock, the son of Leonard and Doris (Mosjian) Arnold. He was raised in Esmond, where he graduated from high school. He began working for Lundi Construction in 1963, and later became a partner in Lunde-Arnold Construction. In 1981, he established Denny's Lumber, and in 1996, added Arnold's How-To Hardware Store to the company. Dennis enjoyed hunting, fishing and sports, and the time it gave him to be with his family. Dennis loved children. They knew him as Dad, Uncle Denny, and Papa Dennis, and with a twinkle in his eye and his silver beard, they knew that he cared for them. He gave his time and energy to his family to provide joy in their lives. While he worked with his hands to help build the community, the most important thing in his life was his wife, Karen, and his family. He served Steele and the surrounding areas with his involvement on City Council, Economic Development, and with time and materials. Dennis is survived by his wife, Karen; his children, D.J. and Shelly Arnold, Bismarck, Lowell and Lisa Arnold, Tampa, Fla., and Debbie and Ryan Domsalla, Missoula, Mont.; his grandsons, Dennis III, Charles and Austin, and one T.B.A. He is also survived by his brothers, Louis Arnold, Esmond, Charles Lunde, Kingsburg, Calif., Nordan Lunde, Davenport, Sam Lunde, Minot, Noel Lunde, McClusky, and Jim Sanders; his sisters, Helaine Arnold, Fargo, Margaret Sanders, Sioux City, Iowa, Gwen Lunde, Davenport, Jolene Lunde, Minot, Tammy Lunde, McClusky, Helen Arnold, Esmond, and Jeanette Arnold, Esmond; and many nieces and nephews. Though his son, Jeff, preceded him in death, Dennis will eternally hold him in his arms. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Doris Arnold, and Ove Lunde; and one brother, Raymond.

Laudie Burian
MANNING -- Laudie Burian, 86, Manning, died June 16, 2001, in the Killdeer care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Tuesday at St. Demetrius Ukrainian Catholic Church, rural Belfield. Further arrangements are pending at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson.

Mae Fairaizl
Mae Fairaizl, 84, Fargo, formerly of Mandan, died June 15, 2001, in a Fargo hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at American Lutheran Church, Mandan, with burial in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 am. to 9 p.m. Monday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Mae was born May 9, 1917, in Fargo, the seventh of 12 children born to Robert and Alice (Payne) Heaton. She was raised and educated in Fargo. She married Stanley Fairaizl on Oct. 12, 1940, in Glendive, Mont. They moved to their home in Mandan in 1941. She worked for Dr. Al Larson from 1955 to 1983. Stan died on March 24, 1981. Mae moved back to Fargo to live with her sister in 1996. She was a Cub Scout pack leader in the 1950s, and a member of the Episcopal Church in Mandan until it closed. She is survived by her son, Robert, Mandan; her granddaughters, Michele Fisher, Bismarck, and Shawn Fairaizl, Mandan; two great-granddaughters, Kaitlyn Marie Fisher and Jordyn Fairaizl; one great-grandson, Tyler Scott Fairaizl; three sisters, Gladys Cates, Salt Lake City, Utah, Elizabeth Dean, Fargo, and Virginia Belle, Riverdale, Md.; three brothers, Arthur Heaton, LaPorte, Texas, Melvin Heaton, Fargo, and Robert Heaton, Seattle; and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Stan; three brothers; two sisters; and one grandson.

Eugene Gillispie
Eugene E. Gillispie, 61, Bismarck, died June 13, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Bismarck Funeral Home, with the Rev. Steve Dunn officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home. Gene was born March 16, 1940, at Niles, Mich., the son of Lee and Ruby (Bloss) Gillispie. He graduated from Niles High School. He married Nancy Martin, and they were married for 42 years. He worked at Melroe for 42 years. He was a member of Elks, Moose, Eagles and Tumbleweed Clubs. Gene enjoyed fishing and camping. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Donna Gillispie, Fort Collins, Colo., and Todd and Holly Gillispie, St. Cloud, Minn.; one grandson, Bryce Allen; two brothers, Jim and Carol Gillispie, Niles, and Richard and Helen Gillispie, South Bend, Ind. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother.

Donald Hass
Donald G. Hass, 43, died June 15, 2001, in the Mandan nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan. Further arrangements are pending at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.

SPIRITWOOD -- Ernest E. Kriedeman, 79, Spiritwood, died June 15, 2001, in the Jamestown hospital. He is survived by his wife, Luella; three children, Gary, Jamestown, Lowell, Smelterville, Idaho, and Ernie Jr., Baker, Mont.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Martha Ambers, Battle Ground, Wash.; and three brothers, Leonard Jacobson, New Rockford, Fred Jacobson, Carrington, and Carl Jacobson, Battle Ground.

Frank Schank Sr.
DICKINSON -- Frank J. Schank Sr., 85, Dickinson, died June 15, 2001, in his home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Monday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Dickinson. He is survived by his wife, Bertha; two children, Marguerite Harter, Chandler, Ariz., and Frank Schank, Dickinson; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Duane Sebastian
HEBRON -- Duane Sebastian, 65, Hebron, died June 15, 2001, in his home after a short bout with cancer. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MDT Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glen Ullin. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Monday at the church, where a prayer service and rosary will begin at 7 p.m. Monday. Duane was born Jan. 1, 1936, near Haymarsh, to John and Caroline (Gietzen) Sebastian. He was raised on the family farm northeast of Hebron. He married Anna Zimmerman on Aug. 22, 1959. He was a lifetime farmer and rancher with his brother, Gerald. Duane enjoyed spending time with family and friends. His pastimes included fishing, hunting, reading and spoiling his grandchildren. Duane was a son, brother, father, uncle and friend, and was the peacemaker and sounding board for young and old alike. His wisdom, honesty and integrity was valued by all who knew him. He will be remembered by those who loved him for his ready ear, quick laugh, and ability to lighten one's spirit with a joke. He was a member of Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Hebron Lions and Dakota Resource Council. He served on the board of the Hebron Fire Protection District, as a 4-H leader and as a school board member. He is survived by his wife, Anna Marie; two daughters, Katherine Sardelli, Hebron, and Karen Schmidt, Center; two sons, Derek, Fargo, and Darin, Bismarck; five grandchildren; his mother, Caroline Sebastian, Glen Ullin; three sisters, Eunice Shirado, Glen Ullin, JoAnn Messer, New Salem, and Joyce Praus, Killdeer; and three brothers, Myron, Towner, Joel, Billings, Mont., and Gerald, Hebron. He was preceded in death by his father, John; and his brother, Reuben. (Spangelo Funeral Home, Hebron)

He is survived by his wife, Olga; one son, Maynard, Manning; three daughters, Ardyce Palaniuk, Fairfield, Patti Burian-Ingman, Killdeer, and Connie Krinke, Scranton; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Andrew, Manning; four sisters, Rose Kern, Portland, Ore., Agnes Fisher, Dickinson, Lena Kadrmas, Fairfield, and Margie Grosulak, Jamestown.
