CARRINGTON -- Thelma M. Rafferty, 94, Carrington, died July 1, 2001, in the New Rockford care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Carrington, with burial in Carrington Cemetery. She is survived by two sons, Duane, Bonney Lake, Wash., and Pat, Pettibone; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; eight step-grandchildren; and many step-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Clara Will, Jamestown, Merle Hampson, Valley City, Henrietta Souders, Paducah, Ky., and Mona Petrowsky, Oildale, Calif.; and one brother, Oscar Dell, Carrington. KILLDEER -- Frank Roshau, 86, Killdeer, died June 30, 2001, in a Dickinson care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Killdeer, with burial in Killdeer Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Anna; four sons, George, Gainesville, Ga., Ralph, Ellijay, Ga., Frank, Killdeer, and Leonard, Dickinson; three daughters, Kathy Leingang, Mandan, Amelia Woodward, Peoria, Ariz., and Anna Marie Hoff, Bismarck; two brothers, Linus, Killdeer, and Joe, Killdeer; four sisters, Isabelle Hartman, Killdeer, Agnes Karey, Manning, Margaret Urbanec, Dickinson, and Claire Roshau, Lincoln, Neb.; 17 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Tommy Thomas
BEULAH -- Tommy Thomas, 52, Beulah, died July 2, 2001, in the Hazen hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Friday at Immanuel Baptist Church, Beulah. Further arrangements are pending at Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah.

Marvin Thon
HARVEY -- Marvin Thon, 76, Harvey, died June 30, 2001, in the Underwood nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Bethany Lutheran Church, Harvey, with burial in St. Petri Lutheran Cemetery, rural Harvey. Visitation will be from 2-7 p.m. today and 2-5 p.m. Wednesday at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey. Marvin was born Sept. 26, 1924, near Harvey. Marvin was the son of Fred and Johanna "Hove" Thon. He was raised and educated in rural Harvey. He entered the U.S. Army on Oct. 24, 1944, and received an honorable discharge on Aug. 18, 1946. He married Mary Neilsen, Dec. 9, 1950, in Fessenden. They lived and farmed in the Harvey and Fessenden area until retiring in 1995. In his spare time, Marvin enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, reading, restoring antique cars and spending time with his grandchildren. Marvin is survived by his wife, Mary; two daughters and sons-in-law, Dianna and Daniel Keller, Minot, and Kathy and Virgil Zeine, Lincoln; one son and daughter-in-law, Myron and Marlene, Harvey; one brother and sister-in-law, Gorden and Leona Thon, Harvey; and a special friend and brother-in-law, Erven Anhorn, Harvey; four grandsons, Brian Keller, Skokie, Ill., Kevin Keller, Minot, Corey Keller, Minot, and Jesse Zeine, Lincoln; two granddaughters, Jessica Keller, Minot, and Kim Luppino, Isanta, Minn.; and one great-granddaughter, Sariah Keller, Skokie. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Inez Anhorn and Florence Thon; and one brother, Lawrence Thon.

Ruby Tweeten
WASHBURN -- Ruby E. Tweeten, 85, Washburn, died July 1, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church, Washburn, with the Rev. Bradley Brauer officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Washburn. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday at Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Ruby Nordquist was born July 10, 1915, near Turtle Lake, the seventh child of 8 born to Charles and Ida (Johnson) Nordquist. She grew up on her parents farm near Turtle Lake where she attended rural school. She then attended high school at Bismarck and Turtle Lake, and graduated from Turtle Lake High School in 1933. She married Ernest Tweeten on Oct. 25, 1936, at the First Lutheran Church, Washburn. They lived and farmed 8 miles northeast of Washburn where she was truly a "farmers wife." They moved into their new home in Washburn in 1977 when their son, Richard and his wife, Kitty, took over the family farm operation. She was a member of First Lutheran Church and was involved in the women's church activities. She participated in community activities as a member of the Star Homemaker's Club, was a 4-H Club leader, a Red Cross volunteer, and a member of Farmers Union. She enjoyed shopping, traveling and spending time with her garden and flowers. Ruby and Ernest received recognition from the North Dakota State Extension Service for their outstanding leadership in 4-H throughout the years. Ruby will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Ernest; one daughter and two sons-in-law, Jean and Curtis Lechner, Bismarck, and James Vonderheide, Coal Valley, Ill.; one son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Kitty, Washburn; six grandchildren, Teresa (Lechner) Fish, Katy, Texas, Tamera Lechner, Apache Junction, Ariz., Susan (Vonderheide) Hills, Elkhart, Ind., Scott Vanderheide, Huston, Texas, Rick Tweeten, Washburn, and Tana (Tweeten) Waldren, The Colony, Texas; eight great-grandchildren, Dustin Fish, Nicole, Nathan and Austin Hills, Samantha, Grant and Taylor Tweeten, and Alexis Waldren; one sister, Hazel Nordquist, Herndon, Va.; and two brothers-in-law, Lester Tweeten, Turtle Lake, and Kenneth and Martha Tweeten, Washburn. She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Janice Vonderheide; two brothers, Ralph and Lloyd Nordquist; and four sisters, Ethel Agre, Janet Renfrow, Edna Beggs and Leone Tweeten.

Ellen Wyman
MOTT -- Ellen E. Wyman, 81, Mott, died July 2, 2001, in the Mott care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Thursday at Evangelical Community Church, Mott, with burial in Sunnyslope Cemetery, Mott. She is survived by three sons, Stanley, Mott, Richard, Hettinger, and Jack, Bowman; one daughter, Mary Raab, Carson; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Dwain Zimmerman
NAPOLEON -- Dwain Zimmerman, 52, Napoleon, died July 1, 2001, in Napoleon. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Napoleon Baptist Church, with burial in Napoleon cemetery. GOODRICH -- Herman Bonnet, 87, Goodrich, died July 5, 2001, in the Harvey hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Peace Lutheran Church, Goodrich. Further arrangements are pending with Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey.

Lottie Botten
WILLISTON -- Lottie A. Botten, 92, Williston, died July 2, 2001, in a Minot medical center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Williston. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Williston. She is survived by three daughters, Lorraine Nelson and Gladys Sandaker, both of Williston, and Jean Erdmann, Willmar, Mont.; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. Fern Brown
BALDWIN -- Fern W. Brown, 81, Baldwin died July 4, 2001, at her home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Church of St. Anne, Bismarck, with the Rev. Ed Wehner officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home, with a vigil and prayer service starting at 6 p.m. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to services at the church. Fern was born March 27, 1920, in Bismarck, the daughter of William and Margaret (Hassa) Malard. She was raised and educated in Apple Creek Township. She married Ralph Brown on March 17, 1941, in Bismarck. Shortly after they were married, they moved to their Baldwin farmstead, which was her home until her death. Ralph died in 1986. Fern enjoyed baking, gardening and going to the Senior Center to play cards. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were very special to her. She is survived by her daughter, Elaine Brown; her sons, Jerry Brown and his wife Debbie and Carl Brown and his special friend Tillie Jochim, all of Bismarck; her special adopted daughter, Ardis Zietlow, Bismarck; her grandchildren, Troy and his wife Gail Brown, Billings, Mont., Tammy Brown and Stacy Brown, both of North St. Paul, Minn., and Jessica Brown, Bismarck; her great-grandchildren, Madison, Tanner and Megan; two brothers, Jack M. Malard and Edwin Malard and his wife Velda, all of Hazelton; and two sisters, Marion Felchle, Bismarck, and Agnes Krueger, Pick City. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph; her parents; one brother, Harvey; and three sisters, Helen, Arlene and Vivian.

Rose Ernst, 95, Roscoe, S.D., died July 2, 2001, in a Roscoe care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Roscoe. Burial will be in Morningside Cemetery, Roscoe. She is survived by two sons, Lloyd, Gainesville, Va., and LeRoy, Bismarck; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mathilda Kirschenmann, Roscoe, S.D. Betty Lou Fisher
BOWMAN -- Betty Lou Fisher, 71, Bowman, died July 5, 2001, in a Bowman health center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Monday at Bowman Lutheran Church, Bowman. Burial will be in the city cemetery. She is survived by her husband, Bill; one daughter, Brenda Teske, Scranton; three sons, B. Barton and Brian, both of Bowman, and Blair, Missoula, Mont.; eight grandchildren; and two sisters, Mildred Beckett, Bossier City, La., and Helen Harris, Eugene, Ore. She is survived by one son, Maynard, Tioga; two daughters, Marlene Friedt, Dickinson, and Ione Schmidt, Tioga; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and five sisters, Mattie Moe, Hilda Ramberg, Mary Nelson, Ida Moe and Agnes Haakenson, all of Tioga. ENDERLIN -- Sherry L. Kuntz, 25, Enderlin, died July 4, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at House of Prayer Lutheran Church, Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Bismarck Funeral Home. Further arrangements are pending.

Byron Lane
SAWYER -- Byron Dale "Barney" Lane, 80, 14221 Highway 52 East, Sawyer, a longtime Sawyer and Minot business owner, died June 30, 2001 in a Garrison living center. A private family funeral service was held July 5 at Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot. Burial arrangements are pending. There will be no reviewal, but friends may sign a register book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot. Byron was born Feb. 27, 1921, on the family farm in Long Lake Township of Burleigh County near Moffit, to Ara Clay "Gumbo" Lane and Amy (Thorson) Lane. He was raised on the family farm and attended rural schools prior to graduating from Moffit High School in 1939. Byron participated in the Civilian Pilot Training (C.P.T.) program prior to enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1943. He served until his honorable discharge in 1945. Byron married Ruth Solberg on Jan. 5, 1944, at Mandan. Byron and Ruth resided on a farm near Moffit for a short time before they moved to Jamestown, Hazelton, Island Park, Minn., Linton and Minot, where he was employed as sheet metal worker and furnace installer. Byron established Lane Sheet Metal in October 1952 and the family resided in Surrey and Minot prior to establishing Lane Vent Fast when the family moved to Sawyer in 1975. In addition, Byron was employed as a subcontractor by F.D. Rich Co. and Montana Dakota Utilities installing heating and air conditioning equipment at the Minot Air Force Base and throughout the United States and Puerto Rico as well as locally. Byron was a member of the Shrine and their Merrymen, National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), a former member of the Elks, and a life member of the American Legion. He was also an avid bowler. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; one daughter, Cheryl Lane, Minot; and two grandsons, Brian and Peter Pittman, Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minn. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Christi Pittman; his parents; and one sister, Anna McCarl. Memorials are preferred to Christi Pittman Memorial Scholarship Fund C/O Ruth Lane or to the Shriners Children's Hospital.
