Carmelita 'Carmie' Leahy
COZAD - Carmie Leahy, 80, of Cozad died Aug. 27, 2001, at the Cozad Hospital.

She was born Jan. 16, 1921, at Clearwater to John and Anna Ernesti Sehi. She graduated from Clearwater High School in 1937.

On Oct. 15, 1940, she married William "Bill" Leahy. They lived on a ranch at Ewing until 1942, when they moved to rural Cozad. In 1944, they moved to Cozad.

Mrs. Leahy was a member of the Christ the King Catholic Church and the Altar Society. She enjoyed playing bingo and cherished her time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include five daughters, Sharon (Leon) Myer of Cozad, Maureen (David) Lewis of Alliance, Janis Hutchins and LaDonna (Dan) Dannehl, all of Lincoln and Vicki (Jeff) Smith of Gibbon; two sons, Michael (Molly) of Lexington and Patrick (Deb) of Cozad; a sister, Helena Kaczor of Ewing; 17 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1990; a daughter, Theresa Marie; an infant son, John Thomas; a grandson, Nicholas Dean; six sisters; and five brothers.

A memorial has been established.

Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Friday at the Christ is King Catholic Church in Cozad.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Don O'Brien as Celebrant. Burial will be in the Cozad Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at the Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad.

Lorna Melvin
OGALLALA - Lorna Melvin, 75, of Ogallala died August 27, 2001, at the Beverly Health Care in Scottsbluff.

She was born Oct. 2, 1925, in Menfro, Mo., the daughter of Henry and Emma Miessner Mahnken. They moved to Perkins County when she was a young child. She attended Trinity Lutheran School.

In 1957, she married Kenneth Melvin in Ogallala. She was employed at the Holiday Inn, the Ogallala Livestock Auction, and Dale's Locker.

Mrs. Melvin was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include a son, Terry of Gering; four sisters-in-law, Eloise Mahnken of Missouri, Mary Ruth and Dorothy Mahnken, both of Grant and Joan Mahnken of Ogallala; three grandchildren, Christen Lea Melvin of Gillette, Wyo., Sherry K. Duke and Berry Melvin, both of Ogallala; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death was her husband in 1980; a sister, Erna Starkey; and four brothers, Carl, Albert, Martin, and Walt.

A memorial has been established.

Service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ogallala with the Rev. David Dobbertien officiating. Burial will be in the Ogallala Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at the Draucker Funeral Home in Ogallala.

Viola Ormesher Miller
LAKEWOOD, Colo. - Viola Ormesher Miller, 87, of Lakewood, Colo., mother of Steven Ormesher and grandmother of Michael Ormesher, both of North Platte, died Aug. 1, 2001, in a car accident.

She was born May 31, 1914, at Hood. She attended country school and high school in Valentine. In 1936, she married Henry Wesley Ormesher. They lived on several ranches south of Valentine. In 1943, they moved into Valentine.

In 1954, they built a house in Valentine. In 1966, they moved to Utah until they retired in 1975, when they again returned to Valentine before moving to Lakewood in 1976. Her husband died in 1981.

In October 1986, she married Edward W. Miller. They traveled to many places including Alaska, Hawaii and the Caribbean. He preceded her in death July 1999.

Mrs. Miller is survived by two daughters, Joyce Noxon of Toole, Utah and Joan (Gene) Noxon of Lakewood; two sons, John (Ann) Ormesher of Dandridge, Tenn., and Steven (Dorothy) Ormesher of North Platte; 10 grandchildren, Donald (Karen) Noxon of Toole, Martha Noxon of West Valley, Utah, Tony (Vena) Noxon of Kearns, Utah, Teri Maxwell of Lakewood, Lori (David) McMullen of Highlands Ranch, Colo., James (Dawn) Noxon of Rochester, Minn., Richard Ormesher of Dandridge, Kim (Gale) Marx of Rushville, Daniel (Laura) Ormesher of Fort Collins, Colo., and Michael Ormesher of North Platte; two brothers, Ivan Swanson of Valentine and Cecil Swanson of Albuquerque, N.M., and many great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Sept. 3, 2001, at the Sandoz Chapel of the Pines on North Green Street in Valentine. Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery.

Mildred H. Olson
BROKEN BOW - Mildred Hope Anderson Olson of Broken Bow died Aug. 27, 2001, at the Elms Health Care Center in Ponca after a brief struggle with brain cancer. She was 85.

She was born Dec. 25, 1915, in the Dutchman Valley of Custer County to Carl and Opal Hatfield Rapp. She grew up in the Dutchman Valley Community and graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1933.

On March 24, 1937, she married Leonard Leman Anderson. In 1938, they moved to Dutchman Valley. In 1972, he preceded her in death. In 1982, she married Irvin Olson. He preceded her in death in 1992.

She attended the Evangelical Free Church and the Berean Fundamental Churches in Broken Bow.

Mrs. Olson is survived by a daughter, Karma (Jerry) Thomas of Newcastle; son, C.J. (Rozan) Anderson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, Ione (Jim) Devolt of Merna; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives.

She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Marilyn; a son-in-law, Leland Fox; her parents; a stepfather, Emmett Smith; a stepsister, Thelma Smith; and a stepbrother, Wayne Smith.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Berean Fundamental Church in Broken Bow with the Revs. Steve Hicks and Bob Winn officiating. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. and a prayer service at 6 p.m. today at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Bess Angeline Kauk
ALMA - Bessie Angeline Bell Kauk, 59, of Alma, mother of Tammara Lalanne of North Platte, died Aug. 29, 2001, at the Harlan County Hospital in Alma.

She was born April 12, 1942, at Axtell to Charles Archie and Angeline Dora Christine Carlson Bell. She graduated from Minden High School in 1960. She graduated from Kearney School of Practical Nursing.

On Sept. 15, 1962, she married Louis Paul Witte at St. John's Catholic Church at Minden and they lived at Blue Hill. They were later divorced.

On June 18, 1994, she married Don L. Kauk at the Westminster Presbyterian Church at Minden. They made their home in Alma.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Alma.

Mrs. Kauk is survived by her husband; four daughters, Tammara (Charles) Lalanne of North Platte, Peggy (Preston) Pratt of Oberlin, Kan., Brenda (Jon) Coffey of Hill City, Kan., and Nicole (Joshua) Mosier of Edgar; two sisters, Carol Hammer of Minden and Rosalie Bigham of St. Joseph, Mo.; a brother, C. Leroy (Diane) Bell of Grand Island; 10 grandchildren; and several other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by a son and her parents.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Alma with the Rev. Lyn Seiser officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the Blue Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the Banta-Torrey Funeral Home in Alma and Saturday at the church.

Edward Richard Steck
ROSEVILLE, Calif. - Edward Richard Steck of Roseville, Calif., a North Platte native, died Aug. 25, 2001, in Sacramento, Calif. He was 62.

He was born April 17, 1939, to Edward C. and Anna Ellen Jensen Steck in North Platte.

In October 1960, he married Treva S. Stogsdill in Sacramento.

Mr. Steck worked at various jobs throughout his working years, with the last 15 years as a newspaper route carrier for the Sacramento Bee.

Surviving him is his wife; five daughters; four sons; his mother of Sacramento; a brother, Ray of Washington; 25 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Graveside services were Aug. 28, 2001, at Sunset Lawn Chapel of the Chimes in Sacramento.

Sue Stroud
Carol Sue Stroud of North Platte died Aug. 29, 2001, at the Great Plains Regional Medical Center. She was 66.

She was born Aug. 26, 1935, at South Coffeyville, Okla., to Thomas Marion and Marvell Katheryne Schults McPheeters. She grew up in Coffeyville, Kan., and graduated from Field Kinley High School in 1953.

She married Harold Dudley Stroud Sept. 15, 1956, at Coffeyville, Kan. They lived there 15 years and in 1971, they moved to North Platte. From 1959 to 1975, she enjoyed water skiiing, and helped Harold with Stroud Development, building houses, doing bookwork.

She continued helping him until the time of her death.

Mrs. Stroud's grandchildren were special to her and she loved her family. She enjoyed watching her family feed the cattle.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Katheryn (Dee) Greeley; two sons, Steven (Jolynn) and Roger, all of North Platte; a sister, Betty Ann Brockway of Coffeyville, Kan.; an aunt, Pauline Knisely of Coffeyville; 10 grandchildren, Michele, Michael, Christopher and Brandy Stroud, Julie (Ben) Miller, Tony Johnson, Josh and Heather Greeley and John and Jimmy Shores; two great-grandchildren, Kerissa Apodaca and Whitney Miller; a special friend, Carrie Sprague; and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorials are suggested to the dialysis unit at the hospital

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Odean Colonial Chapel with the Rev. James Holmes of the New Testament Baptist Church in Des Moines, Iowa, officiating. Burial will be in the North Platte Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Odean Colonial Chapel.

Aloysius T. Ziegler
Aloysius Thomas Ziegler, 84, of North Platte died Aug. 29, 2001, at Centennial Park Retirement Village.

He was born Oct. 25, 1916, to Bernard and Mary Vande Voorde Ziegler at Spalding. He grew up in North Platte where he attended Cody School and St. Patrick Catholic School.

On June 21, 1938, he married Alesa Beyer at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in North Platte. He began working for the Union Pacific Railroad on the extra gang and in the roundhouse as an electrician. He received his welding certificate in Clinton, Iowa, in 1958 and returned to North Platte where he worked as a welder and carman until he retired in 1980.

Mr. Ziegler was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Union Pacific Oldtimers Club. He was a charter member of the North Platte Flyers Pigeon Club and remained active in breeding and raising birds until his death. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Survivors include his wife of North Platte; two sons, Jerry (Judy) of Frazier Park, Calif., and Al Jr. (Jane Ann) of Englewood, Colo.; a sister, Eleanor Wilson of Redman, Ore.; four grandchildren, Mike (Melody) Ziegler of North Platte, Michelle (Rick) Logan of Loveland, Colo., Randy (Sebrina) Derra of Omaha and Ehren Ziegler of New York; and eight great-grandchildren, Jessica and Justin Ziegler, Connor and Tyler Logan and C.J. and April Derra.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Elizabeth Brown and an infant sister; and two brothers, Bernard and Jim Ziegler.

A memorial has been established.

Christian Wake services will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Art Faesser as celebrant. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home.
