Ila P. Sautter
March 5, 1925 - February 24, 2009
Ila P. Sautter, age 83 of Wahoo, formerly of Kearney, NE, died Tuesday, February 24, 2009 in Wahoo. She was born March 5, 1925 at Ericson, NE to Fred and Luella (Perry) Lawrence. Ila’s parents were homesteaders in the Sand Hills of Western Nebraska and lived in a sod house until her father was able to build a wood frame house. This house unfortunately burned down. During the home’s reconstruction, the family moved back into the sod house where they, again, learned to deal with challenges which included an occasional rattle snake inside the house.
Life was hard in the Sand Hills during the Great Depression, and Ila and her siblings worked hard alongside their parents raising and milking cows and tending to the crops. As Christmas came each year, Ila welcomed the single nickel and onion she received in her stocking. Good years on the farm brought an orange in place of the onion. Ila often rode to school on horseback. Through perseverance and great determination, she graduated from Bartlett High School and then taught in country schools in the Ericson area for two years. Among the challenges facing her as a country school teacher were the requirement that she remain unmarried and that she board in the home of a local family. Ila also dealt with skunks that kept making their homes underneath the school building. The traps set there to catch these intruders netted twelve skunks captured during Ila’s short teaching career.
Ila later married and moved with her husband to Buffalo County where he served as sheriff. They lived above the jail for two years and Ila cooked all the meals for the prisoners. Because Ila was such an excellent cook, prisoners didn’t seem to mind their time in jail. In fact, when one particular prisoner had finished his jail sentence, he didn’t want to leave because he would miss the food. Ila also worked for sixteen years in retail sales, most of that time was spent at Miller and Paine.
She was preceded in death by her son Larry Sautter, sisters and brothers-in-law Lula and Jack McMann, Vera and Don Jones, and Debora and John Trusler; brother and sister-in-law Lonzo and Frances Lawrence; brothe Cecil Lawrence; and sister Velma Lawrence. Ila is survived by her daughter-in-law Cheryl Sautter-Konyn of Riverside, CA; grandson Marek Sautter of Riverside, CA; nieces Patricia (Gary) Evans and family of Fremont, NE, Althea (Bob) Dargan and family of Yukon, OK; other nieces, nephews and cousins.
Interment: Sunrise North cemetery
