Alva Brooke
Ohio resident, 93
Alva Benjamin Brooke, 93, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at Monterey Care Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Jesse (Lloyd) Brooke, and his wife, Doris.
Survivors include one son, Gary (Lynn) Brooke; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; other relatives and a special friend, Rita (John) Shea.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 30, at 2 p.m., at the Miller Funeral Home in Grove City, Ohio. Pastor Karen Crawford will officiate. Internment will be at a later date in York.

Norma Awtry
Ogallala resident, 74
Norma Awtry, 74, of Ogallala, died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000 at Indian Hills Manor in Ogallala.
She was born March 27, 1926 in Minden to Chris and Maggie Steffensen Thomsen. She moved to Curtis with her parents in 1929. Norma attended school in rural Frontier County.
Norma married Dale Awtry on April 1, 1946 in Oberlin, Kan. The couple lived in Dorchester, Superior, York and Exeter. In 1969, the Awtrys moved to Ogallala. Norma worked for Lakeway Lodge for several years. After Dale retired in 1986, they enjoyed traveling and attended Dale's Army Battalion Reunions. They especially liked spending time in Branson, Mo.
Norma was a member of the Congregational Church and was active in RSVP and other volunteer organizations in Ogallala.
Survivors include her husband, Dale D. Awtry of Ogallala; three sons, Lonnie (Eva) Awtry of Grand Island, Donald (Jade) Awtry of Vallejo, Calif., Phillip (Tammie) Awtry of Columbus; sister, Katherine (Grover) Cole of Kinsley, Kan.; brother, Stanley Thomsen of Curtis; seven grandchildren.
The body was cremated. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001 at 10 a.m. MST, at the First Congregational, United Church of Christ in Ogallala, with the Rev. Phil Ewert officiating. Inurement will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell on Thursday at 2 p.m. CST. A memorial has been established in her memory.

Raymond "Arvid" Brown Sr.
Raymond "Arvid" Brown Sr., 61, of Lincoln, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000 at Lincoln.
He was born Dec. 4, 1938 at Omaha to Raymond S. and Birdie Mae (Henderson) Brown. He was a self-employed janitor for many years and attended St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lincoln. He enjoyed wood working, crossword puzzles and music.
On Dec. 29, 1995 he was married to Regina Hudson at York.
He is survived by his wife, Regina of Lincoln; four sons, Raymond A. (Stacey) Jr. of Marshall Field, Wis., Jarred Brown of Milford, Jason Brown of Lincoln and Matthew Brown of Lincoln; one daughter, Dawn Hellman of Webster, Texas; three step-sons, Richard (Sharon) Hogan of Little Falls, Minn., Michael (Anita) Hogan of Tennessee, and Patrick Hogan of Scottsdale, Ariz.; one step-daughter, Teresa Hogan of Lincoln; one sister, Barbara L. Kelley of Lincoln; one grandchild; four step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one nephew, Arvid Sherdell Lewis.
Memorial graveside services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 10, at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in York. Memorials may be directed to the family. There will be no visitation due to cremation.

Lena Quiring
Lena J. Quiring, 102, of Henderson, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000 at Henderson.
She was born Sept. 8, 1897 in Hamilton County to John and Helen (Dick) Penner. She was a member of the Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson. She married John C. Quiring on Aug. 23, 1916, in Hamilton County.
She is survived by two sons, Herman (Inez) Quiring of Henderson and Louie Quiring of Hamilton County; three daughters, Sophie Buller of Henderson, Elda (Marvin) Peters of Henderson and Thelma (David) Veleba of York; 22 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; cousins, nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons, one daughter, a son-in-law and a daughter-in-law.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 9, at the Bethesda Mennonite Church at Henderson with the Rev. Weldon Martens officiating. Burial will be in the Freisen Cemetery. Visitation begins after 5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 7, at Metz Mortuary in Henderson.
Memorials may be directed to the Bethesda Radio Broadcast.
Mildred Hays
Mildred L. Hays, 89, of York (and formerly of the Trumbull, Giltner, and Aurora area), passed away at the Hearthstone Care Center in York on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000.
Funeral arrangements are pending with Lewis Funeral Chapel of York, who is in charge of arrangements.
Tim Noble
Tim Noble, 50, of Gresham, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000 at York.
He was born July 2, 1950 at York to Warren and Irma (Galbraith) Noble. He was employed by the Gresham Co-op for over twenty years and was an active member of the Gresham Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Gresham Volunteer Fire Department serving as an Emergency Medical Technician and was serving as a member of the Gresham Village Board for eight years, including four years as chairman. On May 15, 1971 he married Cathy Doremus at Gresham.
He is survived by his wife, Cathy of Gresham; one son, Shane Noble of Gresham; one daughter, Karri (James) Hood of Gresham; one grandson, Colton Hood, also of Gresham; three brothers, Wesley (Jean) Noble of Footville, Wis., David (Pat) Noble of Evansville, Ind. and Dan (Karla) Noble of Ulysses; two sisters, Peggy Diller of Covina, Calif. and Wendy (Steve) Wait of Ulysses; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Friday, Aug. 11, at the Presbyterian Church in Gresham with the Rev. Harry Brown officiating. Burial will be in the Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Gresham. Visitation begins after 5 p.m., on Wednesday, Aug. 9.
Memorials may be directed to the Gresham Volunteer Fire Department or to the family.

Vivian Bjerrum
Vivian Mae Bjerrum, 67, of York, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000 in York.
She was born Dec. 29, 1932 in Seward to Henry and Orva (Mitchell) Bjerrum.
She is survived by one sister, Marian (Joe) Augustine of Lincoln; one brother, Allen (Alice) Bjerrum of Ortonville, Minn; sister-in-law, Virginia Kealiher of York; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Robert and Donald.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, Aug. 12, at 10 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery north of Hampton. There will be no visitation. Metz Mortuary in York is in charge of arrangements.
Orville Birch
Orville Birch, 85, of Lincoln, formerly of York, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000 in Lincoln.
While in York, he was Grand Secretary for the IOOF of Nebraska for 25 years.
Survivors include his wife, Anna Vae of Lincoln; one daughter, Ann (Gary) Charlton of York; four sons, Gordon (Nancy) Birch of Lincoln, Norman Birch of Palm Springs, Calif., Woody Birch of Creston, Iowa, and Ross Birch of Lincoln; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services are pending in Lincoln.
Grant Buller
Grant D. Buller, 76, of Henderson, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, in Henderson.
He was born June 6, 1924, at Rexford, Kan., to John D. and Dora (Doell) Buller. He was a 1942 graduate of Bradshaw High School and served in the Army during World War II. He married Edith Steingard on June 3, 1948 in Henderson. He was the former owner and operator of Central Irrigation and Fertilizer in Henderson. He was a member of the Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson and the York American Legion Bolton Post in York.
He is survived by his wife, Edith of Henderson; sons, Steve (Diane) Buller of Henderson and Larry Buller of Lincoln; daughters, Kathy (Ron) Siebert of Henderson and Denise (Dennis) Olderbak of Bullhead City, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; brothers, Dean (Evelyn) Buller of Henderson, Dell (Evelyn) Buller of Aurora and Denzel (Ann) Buller of Davenport, Iowa; sisters, Mary Ann (Wayne) Rath of Aurora and Jean (Albert) Thieszen of Henderson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Douglas.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., on Wednesday, Aug. 23, at Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m., on Tuesday, Aug. 22, at Metz Mortuary in Henderson, which is in charge of arrangements.

Larry Crouse, Sr.
Larry Crouse, Sr., 69, of Aurora, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at Memorial Hospital in Aurora.
He was born Feb. 26, 1931, in Milford, to Rex and Bessie (Applebee) Crouse. He attended school in Beatrice. He married Janice Wamsley on Sept. 21, 1957, in Lincoln. They then moved to Aurora. He retired from Century Manufacturing after 28 years. He then worked for the city of Aurora in the maintenance department. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, the Lion's Club and was a lifetime member of the Handyman's Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents and birth mother, Mabel Kittlemann.
He is survived by his wife, Janice Eileen Crouse of Aurora; children, Larry "Butch" Rex (Lisa) Crouse, Jr. of Centralia, Mo., Jerry Lee (Rebeccah) Crouse of Rehoboth Beach, Del., Cindy (Ray) Maguire and Deborah (Murl) Taylor; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and a half-brother, Don Steiger of Sweet Home, Ore.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 23, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Aurora with Pastor Randy Brehms officiating. Interment will be in the Aurora Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m., and 7-9 p.m., on Tuesday, Aug. 22, at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.
William Scheve Sr.
William J. Scheve Sr., 84, of Beatrice, died Saturday afternoon, Aug. 19, 2000, at the Beatrice Community Hospital.
He was born on March 20, 1916, in rural Beatrice to Joseph H. and Mary A. Wollenburg Scheve. He was baptized on April 9, 1916, at First Trinity Lutheran Church and confirmed on March 24, 1929. His confirmation verse was Romans 1:16. He graduated from Beatrice High School in 1933 and began farming.
On Feb. 1, 1942, he married Hilda E. Falkenroth at First Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Beatrice. They lived and farmed west of Beatrice all their married life. He was a life-long member of the First Trinity Lutheran Church of rural Beatrice, where he served as the congregational president, church treasurer and church elder. He was on the school board and belonged to various other church organizations. He was a director for Beatrice National Bank for 38 years, served 10 years on the Nebraska State Fair Board, 27 years on the Gage County Fair Board, was president of the Farmer's Union Elevator Board and the Farmer's Union Oil Station. He was on the Beatrice Cemetery Board and was a 4-H leader for the Cub Creek Feeders. He enjoyed driving to visit his children, working on projects in the farm shop, and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Hilda Scheve of Beatrice; two daughters, Mary Ann (Larry) Ring of Alliance and Susan (Arden) Miller of Lodgepole; three sons, Bill (Sallie) Scheve of York, Richard (Mary) Scheve of Beatrice, and Lloyd (Jeanne) Scheve of Blair; nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one brother, Alvin (Addie) Scheve of Norfolk; two sisters-in-law, Hilda Scheve of Mesa, Ariz., and Pauline Scheve of Lawrence, Kan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph H. and Mary A. Wollenburg Scheve; two brothers, Edward and Harold Scheve; and one sister, Josephine Hahn.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 22, at 10:30 a.m., at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Beatrice, with Pastor Mark Rockenbach and Pastor Douglas Irmer officiating. Burial will be at the Evergreen Home Cemetery in Beatrice. A family prayer service will be held at 10:15 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 22, in the basement of the church. The body will lie in state at the Fox Funeral Home until 9:30 p.m., Monday evening, and then at the church one hour preceding the service on Tuesday. The family will greet friends Monday, Aug. 21, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
