"Fred" Miller, 81
(Aug. 19) ALLIANCE - Friedrich "Fred" Miller, 81, died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003, at Box Butte General Hospital. He was born Oct. 8, 1921, at Fresno, Calif., to Georg and Maria Miller.
He came to the Bayard area early in his life and attended school there. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1941 to 1945 as a military police officer. Following his discharge he returned to Bayard. On Dec. 1, 1946, he was united in marriage to Marriah H. Mueller at Bayard. To this union three children were born, Dan, John and Vicki. Fred was engaged in farming. The family moved to Alliance in 1964. He was a member of the St. John's United Lutheran Church where he had served as a council member. He also was a life member and Past Worthy President of Alliance Eagles Aerie No.136, a member of American Legion Post No. 7 and the Alliance Stock Car Club. Fred was very active and enjoyed the activities of his children and grandsons. He is survived by his wife Marriah; sons Dan and John of Alliance; daughter and husband, Vicki and Walt Dyer of Hyannis; grandsons, David (Stacie) Dyer of Lincoln, Robert (Ann) Dyer of Cozad, Daniel (fiance Jennie Knott) of Sutherland, James of Palisade and Mark of Hyannis He also is survived by his sister Pauline Dillow of Buena Park, Calif.; sister-in-law Elizabeth Miller of Bayard; and several nieces and nephews. His parents, one sister Mary, brothers George and Alexander, and an infant grandson Matthew Dyer preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at St. John's United Lutheran Church, with Alice Shriver, P.M.A. officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery with military rites. Memorials may be given to St. John's Lutheran Church or to the Alliance Volunteer Fire Department. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
B.E. (Pierre) Bainter, 74
(Aug. 20) HEMINGFORD - B.E. (Pierre) Bainter, 74, died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, at Hemingford Community Care Center. He was born September 17, 1926, at Galesburg, Ill. to Charlie and Ivy (Montgomery) Bainter.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman and served his country during World War II and the Korean War as a gunner's mate on destroyers in the U.S. Navy. His survivors are his sisters Kay Polen of Alliance, Irene Ross and Pauline Van Winkle of Yates City, Ill.; brother David Bainter of Alliance; and numerous nieces and nephews. His parents, one sister and two brothers preceded him in death.
There will be cremation and private family services. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Thomas M. Sims, 89
(Aug. 20) CHADRON - Thomas M. Sims, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, at Chadron Community Hospital. He was born Dec. 30, 1911, in Bullock County, Alabama. His parents were John Thomas and Renya (Hubbard) Sims.
He was a member of Chadron Kiwanis, Chadron Elks Lodge and the Chadron Chamber of Commerce. He is survived by three sons, John Allen Sims of Chadron, Thomas M. Sims Jr. of Rapid City, S.D., and Bill Sims of Winnemucca, Nev.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He also is survived by numerous brothers, sisters and cousins.
Mr. Sims funeral will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 22, at Greenwood Cemetery, with Rev. K.F. Kaleuati officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. A memorial has been established to Chadron Community Hospital. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, P.O. Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337-0970.
Grace K. Kohler, 88
(Aug. 20) CHADRON - Grace Kathering Kohler, 88, died Aug. 17, 2001, at Chadron Community Hospital. She was born Sept. 12, 1912, in Kansas. Her parents were Bert O. and Grace E. Knowles) Goodrich.
She was a member of Rebecca's and Eastern Star. She is survived by sons, Bill Kohler of Chadron and Jim Kohler of Troy, Ill.; daughter Janet Kohler of Huntington Beach; and one grandchild. She also is survived by brother Glen Goodrich of Chadron; and sisters, Esther Deweis of Colorado, and Dorothy Wolf of Utah.
Mrs. Kohler's memorial service will be at 10 a.m., Monday, Aug. 20, at Chamberlain Chapel. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. A memorial has been established for Chadron Senior Citizen Center and Pioneer Manor Nursing Home at Hay Springs. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, P.O. Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337-0970. Irene Schilz, 72
(Aug. 20) SIDNEY - Irene Schilz, 72, died Monday, Aug. 11, 2003, at Memorial Health Care Center. She was born June 10, 1931, at Denver, Colo., to Rudolph and Helen (Rozman) Gale.
She grew up and attended school at Denver. She was married to Robert Schilz Oct. 22, 1949, at Peetz, Colo., and they made their home at Sidney. She was active in church organizations and enjoyed fishing, rock hunting and being outdoors. She will be lovingly remembered by al as "Granny." She is survived by sons Robert Schilz Jr., and Steve (Violet) Schilz of Las Vegas, Nev., Dave (Bonnie) Schilz of Sidney, and Brian (Jodie) Schilz of Ogallala; daughter Linda (Scott) Deibler of Alliance; 16 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by one brother, Joe Gale; and four sisters, Beverly Spomer, JoAnne Persichitte, Helen Wilson and Margaret Garcia. Her parents, husband and two sisters preceded her in death.
Mrs. Schilz's funeral Mass was at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, at St. Patrick's Parish Center with Fr. Jim Novakowski officiating. A wake service was at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at St. Patrick's. Memorials may be given to St. Patrick's Rummage House or St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Gehrig and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Margaret Olah, 78
(Aug. 21) WILKES BARRE, Pa. - Margaret LaVona Wilson Olah, 78, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at Geisinger Hospital. She was born May 25, 1923 at Alliance. Her parents were Wayne and Clara Wilson.
She was married to Charles J. Olah June 25, 1947. They lived at Berwick, Pa. He preceded her in death. She is survived by sons Charles J. Olah Jr. and Robert Wayne Olah; daughters Peggy Olah and Julie Lynn; and six grandchildren. She also is survived by sisters Berniece Wilson of Alliance and Vera Wilson from California.
Memorials may be made to Nebraska Boys' Town or a charity of the donor's choice.
Pat Sims, 45
(Aug. 21) GORDON - Pat Sims, 45, died July 29, 2001, at his home. He was born Sept 15, 1955, at Long Beach, Calif. His parents were Joesph Geiger and Jeanne Simms.
He had worked for the City of Gordon, Co-op, the Vinton Ranch, and most recently, on the Gordon Memorial Hospital Addition. He is survived by one sister, Celeste Sabala of Downey, Calif.
Mr. Sims' memorial service will be at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 22, at Cicmanec- Chamberlain-Pier chapel at Gordon, with Father Robert Karnish officiating. at Cicmanec- Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Norma M. Martin, 69
(Aug. 21) SCOTTSBLUFF - Norma M. Martin, 69, died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, at her home. She was born Sept. 4, 1932, at Alliance, the daughter of C. W. and Anna Marie (McNertney) Boyce.
She received her education at St. Agnes Academy at Alliance. On May 8, 1951, she was married to Herman Martin at Alliance. She worked for Rhoads Dress Shop at Alliance before the couple moved to Torrington in 1955. While living in Torrington, she worked for the Mode O'Day Dress Shop and the Salebarn Cafˇ. They moved to Lingle in 1960 where she worked for the Lingle Guide Review Newspaper, the Stagecoach Inn, and the Lingle Standard Station. She worked for the U.S. Postal Service at Torrington until her retirement. The couple moved back to Torrington in 1972 and to Scottsbluff in 1979 where she resided until her death. She was a full-time wife and mother who led a very active life. She was involved with her children's activities as a Den Mother for Cub Scouts, an Advisor for the Lingle American Legion Junior Auxiliary, was a Future Homemaker's of America Class Mother, and attended many of the band concerts and parades, class plays, and sporting events of her children and grandchildren. She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church at Alliance, St. Agnes Catholic Church at Scottsbluff and St. Rose Catholic Church at Torrington. She was also an Altar Society member in these three parishes. Her civic memberships included the American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 63 at Lingle where she served as Unit President, District President and Wyoming Sergeant of Arms; the Women of the Moose where she served as Regent and Past Deputy Grand for the year 2000; and she served as the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome advisor at Scottsbluff for many years. She was selected as an Outstanding Young Woman under 35 in Wyoming and she was a member of the Wyoming Republican Women. She instilled a love of family and country in her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her husband Herman Martin of Scottsbluff; children Joan E. (Roger) Frahm of Gering, Phillip Martin of Lusk, Wyo., Sally (Ken) Shoemaker of Omaha, Elaine (Rodney) Jerger of Gering, James Martin of Scottsbluff, and Nancy (Kurt) Nehl of Bayard; and ten grandchildren. She also is survived by one sister, Nadine Roland of Gering, NE;. Her parents, sister Nelda Boyce, and infant granddaughter Jill Shoemaker preceded her in death. At her request, cremation has taken place.
There will be a vigil service at 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, with Fr. Stephen Deaver officiating. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 23, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, with Fr. James O'Kane as celebrant. Inurnment will follow the service at West Lawn Cemetery at Gering. Memorials may be given to the SIDS Foundation. Jolliffe Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Agnes A. Gasseling, 91
(Aug. 21) HEMINGFORD - Agnes A. Gasseling, 91, died Monday, August 19, 2002, at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home at Hay Springs. She was born Feb. 16, 1911, on the family homestead northwest of Hemingford to Thomas and Mary (Turek) Hovorka.
She was the oldest of nine children. She attended Lawn Elementary School and was the first student from that school to graduate from Hemingford High School. She received her teacher training at Chadron and Boulder, Colo. and taught rural school in Box Butte County. On June 6, 1939, she was married to Marcus B. Gasseling at Hemingford. They made their home on the Henry and Anna Gasseling homestead north of Hemingford in Dawes County. Together they added land to the original property where they continued to farm and ranch. She was a member of St. Bridget Catholic Church, a former member of the Dawes County Farm Bureau and was active in Bible study groups. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters Villema Hovorka, Rosalyn Burt, brothers Raymond and John Hovorka and son-in-law Harold Cotant. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Delores and Wayne Farrar of Hemingford, son and daughter-in-law, Adrian and Marion Gasseling of Wallace; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She also is survived by brothers, Frank Hovorka of Marsland, Richard and Eloise Hovorka of Fruitland, Idaho, Tom and Bernadine Hovorka of Carlsbad, N.M., sister Ellen and Richard Pollard of Kansas City, Mo.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 23, at Bates-Gould Chapel at Alliance, with Fr. Bryan Ernest officiating. Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22 at the funeral home at Alliance. Memorials may be given to Pioneer Manor Nursing Home, P.O. Box 310, Hay Springs, NE 69347-0310.
Josephine (Jo) Clarke, 94
(August 22) BRIDGEPORT — Josephine (Jo) Clarke, 94, died Saturday, Aug. 19, at the Heritage Nursing Home in Bridgeport.
She was born on Nov. 22, 1905.
Her survivors include her two daughters and son-in-law, Josephine (JoAnn) Wood of Bridgeport and Jeanne and James Quinn of Arvada, Colo.; son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Arlene Clarke of Laurel, Mont.; 15 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Clara Cushing of Scottsbluff.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 23, at 10 a.m. at the St. Columbkille Catholic Church of Hay Springs with Father Robert Karnish officiating.
The Rosary will be the evening before at 7 p.m. also at the church.
Burial will be in the Gordon Cemetery.
A memorial has been established. Donations may be sent in care of Chamberlain-Drabbels Mortuary, Box 443, Hay Springs, NE 69347.

Loretta Bartels, 65
(Aug. 22) SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Loretta Bartels, 65, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at her home. She was born Dec. 27, 1936, at Hemingford to William J. and Lena (Homrighausen) Enyeart.
She was the youngest of seven children. She is survived by her children, Joan Baker-Warren of Linden, Calif., Robert R. Bartels of Fair Oaks, Calif., and Roy D, Bartels of Stockton, Calif; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-granchildren. She also is survived by three brothers, Harlan Enyeart of San Angelo, Texas, Bill Enyeart of Sacramento, and Duane Enyeart of Hemingford. She was preceded in death by her parents, infant daughter Carol Lynn, brother Alfred Enyeart, and sisters Roxy Enyeart and Fern Malroy.
Mrs. Bartels' funeral was Monday, Aug. 12, at the Mount Vernon Mortuary at Carmichael, Calif. Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society or a charity of the donor's choice.
Beverly Jean Leistritz, 69
(Aug. 22) ALLIANCE - Beverly Jean Leistritz died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003, at Box Butte General Hospital. She was 69. She was born June 7, 1934, in Hay Springs, Neb., to Lloyd and Grace (Gardner) Gould.
Her family moved to Alliance in her early childhood. She married Alexander M. Ogle at the age of 17. To this union four children were born, Connie, Richard, Nancy and Terry. In 1972, she married Max Leistritz in Douglas, Wyo.. They lived most of their married life on the Leistritz ranch at Lakeside, Neb.. Following the death of her husband she moved into Alliance. Along with her husband Max, they were very instrumental in the planning and construction of the Cattlemen's Restaurant in Lakeside. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, V.F.W. and Eagles Auxiliaries. She was active in the re-enactment of the Oregon Trail Drive with horse and mule drawn covered wagons concluding with a parade in Alliance. Her survivors include her children, Richard and Diane Ogle of Denver, Terry and Frances Ogle of Hemingford, Connie and Dave Brewer and Nancy and Roger Mazanec of Alliance, sister Marge Osborn of Alliance, four grandsons and three great-granddaughters. Her parents, husbands and a brother preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be Monday, Aug. 25 at 2 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel, with Reverend Jerry Mercer officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or the Alliance Volunteer Fire Department. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
