Former Hastings resident, Minnie A. Spilios, 102, of Bay Heritage Nursing Home, Niceville, Florida, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002 at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center, Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
Graveside services and interment will be Friday, July 19, 2002; 2:00 P.M. at Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska, with Rev. Tom Murray officiating.
Minnie A. Spilios was born
March 22, 1900 in Minden, Nebraska to Elias & Mary (Nagel) Kembel. She married David Nelson and later married James Spilios. He preceded her in death on November 9, 1978. She was a past employee of Cornhusker Press which later sold to Dutton-Lainson. She was a past member of the First Baptist Church, Hastings, Nebraska.
Minnie A. Spilios was preceded in death by her parents, husband, James and a son, Milton Nelson & daughter-in-law, Marjorie Nelson, 1 brother and 1 sister.

Carl H. Wagner was born
December 28, 1906 in Frank, Russia to John & Anna M. (Ginter) Wagner. He immigrated to the United States with his family at 6 months of age and grew up in Hastings, Nebraska. On August 30, 1935, he married Florence Mildred Morris of Cozad, Nebraska. He was a carpenter in Beatrice, Payette, Idaho, Scottsbluff, Grand Island and Hastings, Nebraska. He worked at Central Community College from July 1966 until his retirement in June 1974. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hastings, Nebraska and NARFE.
Carl H. Wagner was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Wilbur and a sister, Mary Ann Ruble.

Magdalen Martha Blauvelt was born
November 23, 1913 in Exeter, Nebraska to Samuel A. & Theresia (Becker) Spitz. She graduated from Exeter High School and married Lyle Blauvelt on April 30, 1936 in Exeter, Nebraska. He preceded her in death in 1982. They moved to Hastings, Nebraska where she was part owner and bookkeeper for 20 years at Spitz & Blauvelt Machine Shop & Foundry. She was a member of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church, Altar Society, Crosier Apostolate and a past member of Cheery Homemakers Extension Club. She was a long time volunteer at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital Pink Ladys.

December 30, 1939 in Friend, Nebraska to Clarence & Ortha (Parker) Condon. He moved with his family at an early age to Central City, Nebraska. He graduated from Central City High School in 1958 and married Jacqueline ‘Jackie’ Kiser on September 14, 1958 in Archer, Nebraska. He was owner/operator of Nunnenkamp Well Company in Grand Island, Nebraska. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Eagles Aerie #592 and Well Drillers Association.

Minden resident, Edith J. Vannier, 89, died Saturday, July 20, 2002 at Bethany Home, Minden, Nebraska.
Services will be Tuesday, July 23, 2002; 10:30 A.M. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hildreth, Nebraska with Rev. Donald Hunzeker officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Hildreth, Nebraska.
Edith J. Vannier was born
July 4, 1913 in Hildreth, Nebraska to John & Anna (Raveling) Quadhamer. Her childhood years were spent on the family farm south of Hildreth. Edith and her family were active members of Emmanuel Lutheran Church which was located next to the farm. She married Burton Vannier of Hildreth on September 12, 1940 in Hildreth, Nebraska. They resided on a farm north of Hildreth until 1946. They then moved to Hildreth where they owned and operated Vannier Transfer. In 1955, the growing family moved to Holdrege, Nebraska to merge their trucking business into Consolidated Motor Freight. Edith moved to Hastings, Nebraska after the death of her husband in 1957,where she continued as a partner & employee of Consolidated Motor Freight until her retirement in 1977. She was an active member of First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hastings until 1994 when she moved to the Bethany Home in Minden, Nebraska.

Roscoe H. Curtis, 92, of Sunnyside Home, 1401 N. Hastings, died Tuesday, July 23, 2002 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Memorial service will be Sunday, July 28, 2002; 2:00 P.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Rev. Doug Griger officiating. Private family interment at Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.
Roscoe H. Curtis was born
December 1, 1909 in Sacramento, Nebraska to Albert Theodore & Anna Carolina (Person) Curtis. He attended elementary school in Norman, Nebraska. He moved with his family to Harvard, Nebraska and graduated from Harvard High School in 1927. Following graduation, he and his brother, Kenneth, operated the family dry cleaning and laundry service until the out break of WWII. During WWII, he was assigned to the 1902nd Engineer Aviation Battalion of the United States Army, serving in both the Atlantic & Pacific Theaters of war. Following his discharge from the separation center at Fort Logan, Colorado on December 17, 1945, he returned to Hastings, Nebraska and attended Hastings College, graduating in 1949. After graduation, he was employed by the Peter Kiewit, Missouri Valley Construction Company, retiring in 1974.

Robert M. ‘Bob’ Hoffman, 62, of 820 S. Pine #169, died Wednesday, July 24, 2002 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Robert M. ‘Bob’ Hoffman was born
July 14, 1940 in Hastings, Nebraska to Merle D. & Inez Lorane (Hembery) Hoffman. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1958 and attended Community College, Milford, Nebraska and majored in jewelry making. In 1957, he was Nebraska state trampoline champion and also Mid America AAU regional champion held in Chicago, Illinois. He worked for Hibbs Jewelry and Brodkeys Jewelry stores. He was also a dispatcher for the Hastings Fire Department and retired from Cornhusker Press in 1996. After retirement he was a courtesy driver for Kerr Chevrolet. He was an Indian artifact collector and excavated lodge sites. He loved fishing, hunting and Nebraska football. He was a life long Hastings resident.

September 24, 1935 in Hastings, Nebraska to Earl F. & Verna (Kockrow) Frank. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1954 and served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959. On March 9, 1957, he married Wanda L. Ramsey in Broken Bow, Nebraska. He worked for Gamble-Robinson, Fleming Manufacturing and Metz Bakery, all in Hastings, Nebraska. He is a member of First Presbyterian Church and a life member of Eagles #592. He was a past member of the Elks.

Arthur L. Johns, 72, of Hastings, Nebraska, died there on Friday, August 30, 2002.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, September 4, 2002; 10:00 A.M. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with Father Michael Houlihan officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Juniata Cemetery, Juniata, Nebraska.
Arthur L. Johns was born
January 9, 1930 in Meadville, Pennsylvania to Samuel C. & Mary (Triola) Johns. He graduated from Meadville High School in 1946. He served in the United States Air Force from September 1950 to August 1970. Mr. Johns served as a Control Tower Operator in the Korean War, a fighter pilot in Germany, and a Titan missile-launch officer in Colorado, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. On October 25, 1952, he married Gerardine Brown in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1966, he received a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration from Omaha University. After his discharge from the Air Force, they moved to Hastings, Nebraska where he taught at Central Nebraska Technical Community College, worked for Midwest Distributing and owned and operated Golden Triangle Lumber Company, retiring in 1996. .
