Laura, 93, of Columbus, died Thursday, June 29, 2000 at Columbus Manor in Columbus. Services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church Columbus, NE on Monday, July 03, 2000 at 10:30 AM with Rev. Douglas Zurek officiating. Interment will be at the Columbus Cemetery in Columbus. Visitation will be held at Gass-Haney Funeral Home on Sunday, from 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM and at Trinity Lutheran Church Columbus, NE on Monday, from 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM.

Laura was born icon December 27, 1906 in rural Colfax County to Herman and Lena (Munster) Schroeder. She graduated from Schuyler High School. On November 27, 1929, Laura married Elmer Ahrens in York, NE. They lived on a farm west of Schuyler. Elmer passed away on September 17, 1986 and Laura moving to Columbus later that same year. Laura was a homemaker and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus.

Christian James Thomas Buschmeyer

Christian James Thomas Buschmeyer, infant son of James Buschmeyer and Theresa Berends, died shortly after birth on Saturday, September 9, 2000 at the Columbus Community Hospital, Columbus, Nebraska.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, September 11, 2000 at 2:00 P.M. at the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbus, with the Rev. Gary Main officiating.

Wayne Behnken

Wayne Behnken, 80, of Columbus, Nebraska died Monday, September 25, 2000 at the Columbus Community Hospital. Services will be held Thursday, September 28, 2000 at 10:30 A.M. at Peace Lutheran Church, Columbus, with the Rev.'s Michael Klatt and Steve Williams officiating. Interment will be at 2:30 P.M. Thursday at the Greenwood Cemetery, York, Nebraska. Visitation will be on Wednesday, September 27, 2000 from 3:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the Gass Haney Funeral Home in Columbus. Visitation will continue on Thursday at 9:30 A.M. until service time at the Church.

Wayne was born icon on June 18, 1920 in rural York County, Nebraska to Charles and Meta (Heins) Behnken. He attended rural schools in York County and then went to York High School. On October 3, 1941 Wayne joined the United States Coast Guard and was active in World War II and spent 2 years in Alaska and the Aleutian Islands aboard supply ships. He received the rank of MM2C and was discharged on September 13, 1945. On October 10, 1945 he married Dorothy Matousek at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Gresham, NE. Wayne worked for the Nebraska Department of Roads in York and Neligh for 36 years and retired in 1983 as Area Maintenance Supervisor. After retiring they moved to Columbus. He was active in the American Legion, the VFW, and Peace Lutheran Church.

Anna M. Brockman

Anna May Brockman, 100, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001 at the Genoa Long Term Care Center in Genoa, Nebraska. Services will be held at First Baptist Church in Columbus on Friday, April 20, 2001 at 2:00 PM with Rev. John Dennert officiating. Interment will be at the Columbus Cemetery in Columbus. Visitation will be held at First Baptist Church on Friday from 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM.

Anna May Brockman was born icon May 6, 1900 in Genoa, Nebraska to John & Ellen Cherry. Anna attended school in rural Genoa. She married Ted Brockman on April 11, 1923 in Columbus, Nebraska. They farmed and lived in the Monroe, Nebraska area for several years before moving to Columbus. Anna worked for many years at Jackson Cleaners in Columbus and was very active at the First Baptist Church.

Gene Applegate Sr.

Gene Applegate Sr., 76, of Columbus, Nebraska died Sunday, August 19, 2001 at the Columbus Community Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at the Federated Church in Columbus, Nebraska on Thursday, August 23, 2001 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Don Wilson officiating. Interment will be at the Columbus Cemetery in Columbus with Military Honors by American Legion Honor Guard, Hartman Post 84.
Visitation will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 21, 2001 from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM.

Gene was born icon July 2, 1925 in Fremont, Nebraska to George R. and Mary F. (Suiter) Applegate. He graduated from Kramer High School, Columbus, Nebraska in 1943. On October 6, 1943 he joined the US Marine Corps and was stationed in the Philippines. He participated in active operations against enemies at Leyte, Philippine Islands from October 20, 1944 to December 11, 1944. He served in the Pacific Theatre until November 11, 1945. He was honorably discharged on February 3, 1946 and had obtained the rank of Corporal. Gene married Donna Lee Evans on May 29, 1947 at Columbus, Nebraska.
Gene worked for Soil Movers for 17 years as a plant superintendent. He later worked for 23 years at Dale Electronics as a plant manager. He retired in 1990. He was member of the church, the VFW, American Legion, an avid collector of Nippon pottery and antiques. He enjoyed going to casinos, traveling and the horse races.

Services are Monday, August 20, 2001 at 10:00 AM at Highland Park Evangelical Free Church with Rev. Mike Neely officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 19, 2001 from 3:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Monday, August 20, 2001 from 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM at Highland Park Evangelical Free Church. A family prayer service will be at 9:45 AM at the church.

Melvin D. Blaser

Melvin Dean Blaser, 68, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Monday, December 31, 2001 at Beverly Healthcare in Columbus .
Services will be held at Gass Haney Funeral Home on Thursday, January 03, 2002 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Nancy Peebles officiating. Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Cemetery, Columbus.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, January 3, 2002, from noon until service time.

Melvin was born icon August 8, 1933 in Columbus to Henry and Edna (Gerber) Blaser. He lived on the family farm near Duncan, Nebraska before moving to Beatrice, Nebraska. In the early 1960's, Melvin moved back to Columbus and was one of the first residents of Columbus Manor, where he lived the remaining years of his life. He was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ in Columbus. He liked tractors, hats, the outdoors, stuffed animals, wrist watches and country music. He was a friend to everyone who met him.

Walter Bakenhus

Walter Bakenhus, 83, of Columbus, Nebraska died Sunday, December 9, 2001 at the Stanton Nursing Home in Stanton, Nebraska.

The funeral service will be Thursday, December 13, 2001, 10:30 A.M. at Christ Lutheran Church in rural Columbus with Rev. John E. Nelson Jr. officiating. Interment will be at the church cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 12, 2001 from 3:00 - 8:00 P.M. at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Thursday, December 13, 2001 from 9:30-10:30 A.M. at the church with a 10:15 A.M. family prayer service.

Walter E. Bakenhus was born icon February 28, 1918 in Platte County, Nebraska to Oscar & Martha (Otte) Bakenhus. Walter attended rural district school and also Christ Lutheran School where he was baptized and confirmed. On May 23, 1948, he married Lorraine Settgast at Christ Lutheran Church. They farmed south of Leigh, Nebraska and Walter was very active in Christ Lutheran Church and held various church offices. He was a life long member of Christ Lutheran Church. In February of 2001 Walter moved to the Stanton Nursing Home.

Alma Buss

Alma Buss, 89 of Columbus, Nebraska died Sunday, January 7, 2001 at Beverly Health Care of Columbus.

Services are Thursday, January 11, 2001 at 2:00 P.M. at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. Roland A. Jank officiating. A family prayer service will be at 1:45 P.M. Thursday at the church. Burial will be at Christ Lutheran Cemetery, rural Columbus, Nebraska. Visitation will be on Wednesday, January 10th, 2001 from 3:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. and on Thursday, January 11th, 2001 from 8:30 A.M. until noon at Gass Haney Funeral Home and from 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. at Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Alma H. Buss, 89 was born icon June 4, 1911 in Columbus, NE to Henry & Elise (Bakenhus) Buss Sr. Alma attended Christ Lutheran Elementary School and graduated from Kramer High School in Columbus. During her childhood and as a young adult, she lived on a farm 7 1/2 miles North of Columbus before moving into Columbus. Alma worked for approximately 40 years at Miessler Drug Co. as a retail slaes clerk. Alma was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where she was active in the Mission Sowers and the Lutheran Womens Missionary League. She was a former member of Christ Lutheran Church.
