Genelle Stevens
POLK -- Mary Genelle Stevens, 79, of Polk, died Saturday, June 12, 1999, at York General Hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Polk. Rev. Dr. Jeffery Thurman will officiate. Burial will be in the Polk Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Solt Funeral Home in Polk.
Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Stevens was born
Dec. 25, 1919 at Stromsburg to Edgar C. and Jennie T. (Stromberg) Coover. She attended school near Stromsburg until 1932, when she moved to a farm north of Polk. She graduated from High Prairie High School northeast of Polk in 1938.
She married Arlo A. Stevens on June 29, 1941 at Polk. They farmed and ran a cattle feeding operation. In 1971, she was paralyzed by a brain aneurysm and her husband cared for her until his death in 1987. She then moved to Polk.
She was a 50-year member of the Polk United Methodist Church, a member of United Methodist Women, serving as president and other offices. She was a Sunday school teacher and charter member of the Polk Senior Center.
She enjoyed reading and jigsaw puzzles.
Survivors include three sons, Gaylerd of Hordville, Gary of Omaha, and Gale of Hordville; one daughter, Karen of Polk; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Kendall; and a brother, Paul.
Lorrie Eggers
LINCOLN -- Lorrie Eggers (McComb), 39, of Lincoln, formerly of Grand Island, died Sunday, June 13, 1999, in Lincoln after a lengthy illness.
Services are pending at Kleine Funeral Home.
Les Loescher
KEARNEY -- Les. L. Loescher, 78, of Kearney, died Friday, June 11, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Kearney. Rev. Dr. Ron Roemmich will officiate. Burial will be in the Kearney Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary and prior to services Tuesday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church, Nebraska Multiple Sclerosis Foundation or Make A Wish Foundation.
Mr. Loescher was born
Sept. 24, 1920 at Grand Island to Frederick and Olga (Lohman) Loescher. He grew up in Grand Island and graduated from Grand Island High School in 1938.
He married June Kohlhof on Nov. 23, 1942 in Grand Island. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps in England. After the war, he managed a Firestone store in Cherokee, Iowa, and then moved to Kearney in 1951. He founded L & W Service Center, later establishing stores in Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming.
He was active in business and community affairs. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, V.F.W. Post 759, American Legion Post 52, Elks Lodge 984, Rob Morris Masonic Lodge 46 AF & AM, Tehama Temple Shrine and the Jesters, Golden K Kwainis Club and the Chamber of Commerce. He also served as past president of the National Tire Dealers Association and served on the Kearney City Council.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Marc of Kearney; three daughters, Lynette Ayres of Minneapolis, Minn., Deborah Keeney of Kearney, and Cynthia Sanchez of Omaha; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Inez Neimoth of Grand Island and Martha Heimbuch of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by two sons, David and Larry; and a sister.
Allen Dunbar
ORD -- Allen B. Dunbar, 80, of Ord died Monday, June 28, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Ord United Methodist Church. The Rev. James B. Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Moulton Cemetery in Loup County.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Dunbar was born
on May 14, 1919, on the family farm near Almeria to Elmer Bruce and Elva Pearl (Hoobler) Dunbar. He grew up on the farm and attended Knobby Ridge Country School. He later earned his GED.
During World War II, he was drafted and served in the U.S. Army from August 1942 to November 1944.
He married Hazel Nicks on June 5, 1943, at Lawton, Okla. After he was discharged from the service, the couple returned to the Almeria area to farm. Besides farming, he worked for the Bureau of Reclamation on the Mirage Flats project south of Hay Springs. He also worked on the Sargent Irrigation Project.
The couple moved to Ord in 1958, and he worked for the Soil Conservation Service. He retired from the SCS in 1984 but continued to work in various capacities for many years.
He was a member of Rural Conservation and Development, the natural resources district and city planning commission and was president of the Senior Classics of Ord. He was a member of the Ord Elks Lodge and American Legion and was active in the Bethel Baptist Church.
He enjoyed gardening, woodworking and building his home.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Rick Dunbar of Eustis, Dick Collins of Kearney and Nick Aquino of Cockeysville, Md.; four daughters, Beverly (Mrs. Eugene) Cook and JoAnne Dunbar, both of Lincoln, Janice (Mrs. Clayton) Kooiker of LeMars, Iowa, and Toni (Mrs. Reinhart) Uebe of Leoni, Germany; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Earl of Milburn, Mark of Chadron and Arnold of Almeria; and two sisters, Wilma Brown of Correctionville, Iowa, and Ethel Palmer of Almeria.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Gail Dunbar.
Elizabeth Iwan
KEARNEY -- Elizabeth J. Iwan, 16, of Kearney died Thursday, June 24, 1999, as a result of an automobile accident north of Kearney.
Services were on Monday at St. James' Catholic Church. The Rev. Charles Torpey officiated. Burial was in the Kearney Cemetery.
Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary in Kearney was in charge of arrangements.
Miss Iwan was born
on July 23, 1982, to Charles and Deborah (Dahms) Iwan. She completed the 11th grade in May.
She enjoyed track, music, dancing and spending time with infants and children at her mother's in-home day care.
Survivors include her parents; a sister, Tessa of Phoenix; her paternal grandparents, Edward and Darlien Iwan of Duncan; and maternal grandparents, Kenneth and Ella Mae Dahms of Grand Island.
'Mike' Mahoney
HASTINGS -- Thomas M. "Mike" Mahoney, 76, of Hastings died Monday, June 28, 1999, at his home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church. The Rev. Christopher Kubat will officiate. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery.
A rosary service will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Butler-Volland Chapel.
Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and one hour before services at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Mahoney was born
on March 25, 1923, in Spalding to John and Catherine (Rosschaert) Mahoney. He graduated from Spalding High School.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from April 13, 1943, until Oct. 23, 1945. He flew 35 bombing missions during the war and was a radio operator in B-17s. He received the EAME with three Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, Air Medal with five bronze clusters, one service stripe and the Distinguished Flying Cross.
He married Margaret Porter on Oct. 7, 1950, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They moved to Hastings in 1952 from Council Bluffs. He worked as a mason. Mrs. Mahoney died on July 26, 1996.
Mr. Mahoney was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church.
Survivors include a son, Michael Mahoney of Hastings; two daughters, Rebecca Mahoney of Hutchinson, Kan., and Michele Finnigsmier of Hastings; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Leo "Knobby" Mahoney of Spalding; and one sister, Catherine Griffin of Omaha.
Other than his wife, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Kristy Kay; one brother and three sisters.
Pamela Breci
ELKHORN -- Pamela Kay Breci, 45, of Elkhorn died Tuesday, June 29, 1999, at the Hospice House in Omaha.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Peace Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Kenneth Bunnell will officiate. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Elkhorn.
There will be no visitation.
Memorials are suggested to the Pamela K. Breci Scholarship Fund.
Reichmuth Funeral Homes in Elkhorn is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Breci was born
on July 29, 1953, at Grand Island. She graduated from Grand Island Senior High and Kearney State College and received a master's degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
She married Vincent L. Breci on June 11, 1977, in Omaha. She had been teaching in the Omaha area since graduation. She taught the last 19 years at Millard North High School.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Alyssa Breci of Elkhorn; her parents, Robert Jr. and Dorothea Scott of Surprise, Ariz.; and a brother, Steve Scott of Scottsdale, Ariz.
Edna Arnold
SHELTON -- Edna M. Arnold, 90, of Shelton, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Shelton. The Rev. Timothy Parker will officiate. Burial will be at the Shelton Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church in Shelton.
Memorials are suggested to the Shelton Rescue Squad or The Lutheran Hour.
Apfel Funeral home of Wood River is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Arnold was born
Feb. 20, 1909, north of Shelton to Fred and Meta (Meissner) Holtz. She attended District 61 School and Zion Lutheran Parochial schools north of Shelton.
She married Herbert Arnold on Feb. 14, 1932, at Zion Lutheran Church north of Shelton. The couple lived in Poole and then moved back to Shelton in 1944. The couple farmed north of Shelton for many years. Mr. Arnold died in 1974.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Shelton. She enjoyed crocheting and visiting friends in nursing homes around the area.
Survivors include two sons, Wayne and Gerald of Shelton; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter and Erwin Holtz.
