Robert Fortney
HUTCHINSON, Kan. -- Robert D. Fortney, 66, of Hutchinson, Kan., died Monday, July 26, 1999, at his home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Elliot Mortuary Chapel in Hutchinson. Chaplain Fred Obold will officiate. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to Reno County Hospice.
Mr. Fortney was born
on Nov. 25, 1932, in Oelwein, Iowa, to Harry and Flora Ayers Fortney. He graduated from Oelwein High School.
He married Alberta Huntington on Nov. 3, 1953, in Phenix City, Ala. They lived in Grand Island before moving to Hutchinson in 1986.
He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 378 in Grand Island.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Alan; two daughters, Peggy Fortney Harris of Thornton, Colo., and Kathy Villa of Oelwein, Iowa; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Delbert of Spokane, Wash.; and one sister, Virginia Green of California City, Calif.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Marie Fortney.
Raymond Cyboron
BOELUS - Raymond B. Cyboron, 80, of Boelus died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Rockville. The Rev. Rod Pruss will officiate.
Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Rockville. Wake services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.
Melissa Smith
LOUP CITY - Melissa Smith, 90, of Loup City, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at the Rose Lane Home in Loup City.
Services are pending at Peters Funeral Home in Loup City.

Helen Vogt
BETTENDORF, Iowa - Helen L. Vogt, 90, of Bettendorf, Iowa, formerly of Belgrade, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, in Iowa.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton. Burial will be in the Fullerton Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Thursday until service time.
Irene Purdy Irene Purdy, 89, of Grand Island died Friday, July 23, 1999, at Tiffany Square Care Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Gollaher Chapel of Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev. Delvin Roper will officiate. Burial will be in the Phillips Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Sunday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the Grand Island Woman's Club or Stuhr Museum.
Mrs. Purdy was born
on July 26, 1909, near Phillips in Hamilton County to George M. and Frances (Guilford) Falmlen. She grew up and was educated in the Phillips community. She graduated from Phillips High School in 1928.
She married Raymond G. Purdy at Phillips on June 20, 1929. The lived on a farm near Phillips until moving to Grand Island in 1934.
Mrs. Purdy was a member of the first class of state-licensed licensed practical nurses in Hall County and a Red Cross volunteer during World War II, donating many hours. Before she retired in 1971, she was an office nurse for Dr. Campbell and Dr. Mongeau.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the YWCA, Liederkranz and Eagles. She was a former member of the Grand Island Woman's Club, Shriners Marathon and the Colonial Club. She enjoyed traveling, playing cards and volunteer work.
Survivors include a son, Ronald Purdy of Grand Island; a daughter, Marlene Goos of Omaha; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Her husband died on May 4, 1976. She also was preceded in death by a brother, George M. Falmlen III; and two sisters, Theresa Eaton and Dorothy Golay.
Max Hickman
GREELEY -- Max D. Hickman, 77, formerly of Greeley, died Thursday, July 22, 1999, at BryanLGH Medical Center West in Lincoln.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Ord Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Douglas Grove Cemetery at Comstock. The Greeley and Comstock American Legion will conduct military rites.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the Grand Island Veterans Affairs gift store or the Greeley and Comstock volunteer fire departments.
Mr. Hickman was born
on June 15, 1922, at Arcadia to Robert Oakley and Nina N. (Hogue) Hickman. He was raised and attended school in the Arcadia area. He graduated from Westerville High School in 1940.
He entered the U.S. Army in 1942.
He married Miriam J. Kauff on July 13, 1944, in Columbus, Ohio.
Mr. Hickman was wounded in the Pacific battle to recapture Manila in 1944. After he was hospitalized for a year, he and his wife moved to Bentonville, Ark. He attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. The Hickmans returned to Nebraska and bought a farm at Comstock in 1951.
After the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation purchased the farm for the Arcadia Diversion Dam/Sherman Reservoir project, Mr. Hickman began work for the U.S. Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service. He worked in field operations and became executive director of the Greeley County ASCS office. He retired in 1984.
Mr. Hickman was a member of the Elks, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Greeley Service Club, Comstock Fire Department, National Association of County Office Employees, American Association of Retired Persons and Nebraska Democratic Party Central Planning Committee. He was a past mayor of Greeley.
Survivors include a son, M. Douglas Hickman Jr. of Arcadia; four daughters, Miriam A. McFadden of Sharps Chapel, Tenn., Karen S. (Mrs. Jim) Day and Dawn E. (Mrs. Michael L.) Whitlow, both of Lincoln, and Bonita M. (Mrs. Rodney) Hickman-Kamarad of Comstock; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert N. Hickman of Overton.
He was preceded in death by his wife, an infant son, two sisters and a brother.
Melvin Horky
SARGENT -- Melvin Horky, 76, of Sargent died Friday, July 23, 1999, at Jennie M. Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent. The Rev. Mark Crist will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Sargent.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Donald Frazier
Donald Arthur Frazier, 87, of Grand Island, formerly of Archer, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, at the St. Francis Medical Center Skilled Nursing Unit.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Faith United Methodist Church. The Rev. Richard Karohl will officiate. Burial will be in the Archer Evangelical Community Cemetery.
Solt Funeral Home of Central City is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Frazier was born
on Aug. 13, 1911, near Archer to Arthur L. and Cora Ellen (Shephard) Frazier. He attended rural Merrick County schools and then farmed in the Archer area.
He married Wauneta F. Bonness on Aug. 26, 1943, in Archer. They retired from farming in 1980 and moved to Grand Island. Mrs. Frazier died on Oct. 23, 1996.
Mr. Frazier was a member of Faith United Methodist Church and the Central City Sportsman Club. He was the Jordan Medal holder of Masonic Friendship Lodge 239 in Chapman and was a past board member of the Archer Credit Union. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include one son, David Lee Frazier of Wood River; and one sister, Janice Hesselgesser of Central City.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Mess and Mabel Hansen; and two brothers, Raymond and Leonard Frazier.
John Fread
PLEASANTON -- John Fread, 67, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, at his home northwest of Pleasanton.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Evangelical Free Church in Pleasanton. The Rev. Brian Fugleberg will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery north of Pleasanton.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the church. Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Fread was born
on Aug. 20, 1931, in rural Buffalo County to Howard and Gail (Grant) Fread. He attended Brown School in rural Buffalo County.
He married Georgia Evans on Dec. 10, 1950, in Mason City. The couple lived and farmed in southeastern Custer County.
He was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Pleasanton and had served as a deacon and in other positions on the church board.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Dennis of Pleasanton and David of Brazil; two daughters, Debra Jelken of Franklin and Dottie Meyers of Ravenna; six grandchildren; three brothers, Russell Fread of Grand Island, Wilbur Fread of Litchfield and H. Laroy Fread of Kearney; and one sister, Juanita Beckham of Pleasanton.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert L. Fread; and one sister, Betty Brewer.
Gene Hartman
DANNEBROG -- Gene Hartman, 62, of Dannebrog died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, at Methodist Hospital in Houston.

Anton Hovorka
ORD -- Anton J. Hovorka, 81, of Ord died Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Ord United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim B. Miller officiating. Burial will be in Cottonwood Cemetery at Burwell. Burwell American Legion Post 298 and Burwell Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6155 will conduct military rites.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Ord Memorial Chapel.
