Stan Sandman

UTICA -- Stan J. Sandman, 72, of Utica died Friday, Aug. 6, 1999, in Lincoln.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Utica. The Rev. Maurice Current will officiate. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery. A Rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the Metz Chapel in York.

Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Metz Mortuary in York is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Sandman was born icon Oct. 31, 1926, at Petersburg to Joseph and Tillie (Hovley) Sandman.

He married Mary Ann Rotherham Sept. 20, 1949, in St. Edward.

Mr. Sandman was employed at Nebraska Gas Company for 22 years, and also at Dale Electronics in York and Columbus. He was a World War II veteran.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Utica, the Utica Volunteer Fire Department and the American Legion Post No. 49 in Utica.

Survivors include his wife, Mary of Utica; three sons, Jerome Sandman of Hebron, Don Sandman of Utica and Ray Sandman of Mesa, Ariz.; three daughters, Jeanne (Mrs. Gary) Schrader of Littleton, Colo., Kay (Mrs. Vince) Hoefler of Lincoln and Bev (Mrs. Ken) Johnson of Milwaukee, Wis.; 14 grandchildren; one brother, Loren Sandman of New Castle; and one sister, Dolores (Mrs. Sonny) Marker of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by three brothers.

Mary Dunning

Mary Agnes Dunning, 83, of Grand Island, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999, at her home following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Revs. Don Larmore and James Whalen will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday with a 7:30 p.m. parish rosary.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Dunning was born icon Dec. 28, 1915, in rural Greeley County to Joseph and Anna Clara (Kinsella) Whalen. She grew up in Greeley and attended Sacred Heart School, graduating in 1934. Following her schooling she worked as a sales clerk and helped care for her father at home.

She married Bernard R. Dunning on July 29, 1940, at Sacred Heart Church in Greeley. They lived in Spalding for a short time and then moved to Grand Island. She worked in the home and then later worked as a surgical aide at St. Francis Hospital until retiring in 1978.

She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, the Altar Society and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

She was active in the church and chaired many church bazaars and dinners. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, canning vegetables and music.

Survivors include three sons, Donald, Jerry and Tom Dunning, all of Grand Island; three daughters, Anna Marie Kuhn of Norfolk, Patty Stein of Mesa, Ariz. and Mary Dunning of Grand Island; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, the Rev. James Whalen of Ogallala and Leo Whalen of Cheyenne, Wyo.

She was preceded in death by her husband on Feb. 12, 1998, and one brother, Edward Whalen.

Michael Lutt

Michael W. Lutt, 50, of Grand Island died Monday, Aug. 9, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home with the Rev. George Wheat officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation is from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the family receiving friends during that time.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Lutt was born icon on April 21, 1949, at Grand Island to Donald and Phyllis (York) Lutt. He attended school in Grand Island and graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1967.

He entered the U.S. Army on Nov. 15, 1967, and served during the Vietnam War. He was discharged on March 25, 1970. He was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Marksmanship Badge and Combat Infantry Badge.

He married Trudie L. Ueckert on May 18, 1969. They had a daughter. He married Carmen Westwood, and they had two children. They were divorced.

Survivors include his parents, Donald and Phyllis Lutt of Grand Island; two daughters, Misti Chmiel and Dannell Simmons, both of Grand Island; two sons, Steven Lutt of Wayne and Tyler Lutt of Dannebrog; three grandchildren; two brothers, Randy and Joel Lutt, both of Grand Island; and one sister, Patricia Baxter of Las Vegas.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

'Jack' Smith

John J. "Jack" Smith, 70, of Grand Island died Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home with the Rev. Jose Chavez officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary, Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Smith was born icon on Nov. 7, 1928, at Parsons, Kan., to Ferdie and Alice (Musgrove) Smith. He grew up near Parsons and attended high school there.

He entered the U.S. Navy as a Seabee and served during the Korean War. After he was discharged, he returned to Parsons, where he worked for the MK&T Railroad. He worked for the railroad after moving to Grand Island in 1964.

He married Alma (Rieger) Zwiebel on Oct. 31, 1964, at Central City. He worked for most of his life for the Union Pacific Railroad and retired in 1990.

He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of the American Legion, Eagles and St. Mary's Cathedral. He enjoyed woodworking.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Bob Zwiebel of Grand Island; three granddaughters; one grandson; three brothers, Bernard Smith of Parsons, Kan., Charlie Smith of Omaha and Dick Smith of North Platte; and four sisters, Margaret Gartner of Parsons, Kan., Mary Davis of Kirkland, Wash., Helen Kennedy of Kansas City, Kan., and Betty Ann Bonham of Collinsville, Okla.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Jim.

Mary Doran

ST. EDWARD -- Mary Hannah Doran, 86, of Cloverlodge Care Center at St. Edward, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 1999, at Boone County Health Center in Albion.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Albion. The Rev. Frank Baumert will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday with a 6:30 p.m. wake service at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.

Mrs. Doran was born icon Jan. 20, 1913, on a farm near the Bradish community east of Albion. She received her elementary education at School District No. 2 west of Albion.

On Oct. 10, 1935, she was married to Ronald Doran at St. Michael's Catholic Church. They lived on a farm west of Albion. She was a housewife and farmed with her husband. She enjoyed working on the farm. She lived on the farm for about 55 years before moving into Albion with her brother, Hank in the early 90's. In 1996 she moved to the Cloverlodge Care Center in St. Edward.

She was a lifetime member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Albion and was also a member of the Maple Center Club in the area west of Albion.

Survivors include one daughter, Patricia (Mrs. David) Hellbusch of Albion; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; five sisters, Charlotte (Mrs. Gilbert) Spieker of Petersburg, Gretchen (Mrs. Clyde) Warnke and Bonnie Benjamin, all of California, Ann Kinzer and Elsie (Mrs. Kenneth) Bolin, both of Albion; and one brother, Robert Malone of California.

She was preceded in death by her husband; three brothers, Henry, Francis and George Malone and an infant sister, Kathleen Ann.

Walter Holtz

ST. PAUL -- Walter L. Holtz, 87, of St. Paul died Monday, Aug. 9, 1999, at the Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.

Jacobsen Funeral Home of St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.

'Whitey' Vogt

KEARNEY -- Charles W. "Whitey" Vogt, 90, of Kearney, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999 at the Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna, where he had lived since November of 1998.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Kearney. The Rev. Ron Harris will officiate. Burial will be in the Kearney Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary and until service time Wednesday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna or the First United Methodist Church in Kearney.

Mr. Vogt was born icon Jan. 25, 1909, on a farm south of Ravenna to George and Bertha (Kutz) Vogt. He attended Sandhills Country School, south of Ravenna.

He married Rose M. Polka on March 2, 1937, in Kearney. They farmed north of Ravenna in Sherman County until moving to Kearney in 1940. After moving to Kearney, Mr. Vogt hauled gravel until the war. During World War II he worked for the Civil Service in the propeller shop at the Kearney Air Base.

After the war he worked construction for several years and then worked for the City of Kearney Water Department from 1954 until he retired in 1974.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Kearney Eagles.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Donald L. and Milfred L., both of Kearney; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Arthur, Harold and Harry, all of Ravenna; and two sisters, Irene O'Meara of Grand Island and Ethel Prochaska of Ravenna.

He was preceded in death by one son, Raymond D. and two brothers, William and George.

Ann Lacy

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Ann C. Lacy, 89, of Fort Myers, Fla., died Friday, Aug. 6, 1999, at the Heartland Health Care Center in Fort Myers, Fla.

She was the widow of Robert L. Lacy, a former building contractor in Grand Island.

Mrs. Lacy will be cremated. A memorial service will be at a later date. Burial for both Mr. and Mrs. Lacy will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Loren Trendle

YUMA, Ariz. -- Loren F. Trendle, 81, of Yuma, Ariz., formerly of Fullerton, died July 28, 1999, at La Mesa Care Center following an extended illness.

Services were July 31 at Sunset Vista Funeral Home in Yuma. The Rev. Sherwood Glover officiated. Burial was at Sunset Vista Cemetery.

Mr. Trendle was born icon on Oct. 3, 1917, at East Peoria, Ill. to George and Margaret (Hufeld) Trendle. He graduated in 1935 from Manual Training High School at Peoria.

On July 9, 1939, he married Mary Ann Forler at Peoria.

He worked for Caterpillar Tractor Co. At the start of World War II, he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet/officer candidate. He returned to Peoria in 1945. In 1948, he moved to Banes Oriente, Cuba as a supervisor for United Fruit Co. He returned to the United States in 1955 and purchased the Ben Franklin Store in Fullerton.

Several years later, he went to work for Dale Electronics, first at its Norfolk plant and then at Columbus. He lived at Stires Lake at Columbus for 25 years. He retired in 1986, and wintered in Florida and Arizona before moving to Yuma in 1997.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Columbus. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, pinochle and bridge.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Cathy (Mrs. Jack) Baldwin of Lakeside, Ariz.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, LaVerna (Mrs. Jack) Wilkie of Peoria, Ill.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Becky (Mrs. Fred) Boelts and two brothers, Bradley and Milton Trendle.
