Mary Kuta

Mary K. Kuta, 77, of Grand Island died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Don Larmore will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7:30 p.m., with a rosary at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.

Mrs. Kuta was born icon on Dec. 13, 1921, at Mount Gilead, Ohio, to Henry and Gertrude Reed. She grew up and was educated at Mount Gilead. In 1943, she began serving as a clerk for the Military Police in the Women's Army Corps. She was discharged in 1945.

She married Arthur F. O'Neill on Oct. 5, 1946, at St. Mary's Cathedral in Grand Island. The couple lived in Grand Island. She worked at Tiny Tot Day Care. They later moved to York, Geneva and a farm near Alda. Mr. O'Neill died in 1988.

She married Emil Kuta on Oct. 11, 1997, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Grand Island. The couple lived in Grand Island.

She was a homemaker. She had recently been employed a Sam's Club but took a leave of absence due to her health.

Mrs. Kuta was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, a former member of the Catholic Daughters and a member of the Platt-Duetsche Society. She enjoyed camping, fishing, crocheting and cooking.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, William O'Neill of O'Neill and Tom O'Neill of Hastings; two daughters, Peggy Trejo and Diana O'Neill, both of Grand Island; three stepsons, Larry Kuta of Grand Island, Doug Kuta of St. Libory and Loren Kuta of Elizabeth, Colo.; and eight grandchildren.

In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Charles; and two sisters, Jand and Bud.

Colleen Smith

Colleen M. Smith, 74, of Grand Island died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at Fort Collins, Colo.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Palmer Funeral Home in Palmer. The Rev. Rob Pearson will officiate. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery near Palmer.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family to be used for Poudre Valley Hospital family housing in Fort Collins, Colo.

Mrs. Smith was born icon Jan. 26, 1925, to George and Mary (Glause) Deertz in Palmer. She grew up in Palmer and graduated from Palmer High School in 1943.

She married Boyd Snodgrass in 1943. They lived in the Grand Island area and moved to California in 1955.

In 1962 she married Charles Smith. They lived in Grand Island and were winter caretakers in Yellowstone for three years. Around 1968 they moved to the Paxton area. She worked as a waitress in a Paxton restaurant. In 1978 she moved back to Grand Island.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Grand Island. She enjoyed reading.

Survivors include three daughters, Terry (Mrs. Benjamin) Thayer and Kathy (Mrs. Patrick) Connelly of Dannebrog and Alana (Mrs. Greg) Minor of Fort Collins, Colo.; two brothers, Duane Deertz of Grand Island and George Deertz of North Platte; one sister, Theodora Oltman of Belleville, Kan.; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Ellen Stoner

Ellen E. Stoner, 99, of Grand Island died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at Lakeview Rehab/Nursing Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. Onamae Waddel will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Trinity United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Stoner was born icon on March 1, 1900, at Osceola to Nels and Anna (Johnson) Anderson. She grew up and was educated in Cowles near Red Cloud.

She married Paul Buckles on June 10, 1920. The couple lived in Red Cloud and Blue Hill. They were divorced.

She married George Burton on March 15, 1948. They lived on a farm west of Grand Island. She was a homemaker and worked on the farm. Mr. Burton preceded her in death. She was a nurse's aide at the Baumann Home for nine years during the 1960s.

She married Merrill Stoner on April 12, 1976, at Swede Home, near Stromsburg. They lived in Grand Island. Mr. Stoner died in November 1984.

Mrs. Stoner was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the church's Women's Circle. She was a past member of Truth Rebekah Lodge and 3 Links Clubs. She attended activities at the senior center. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, reading and traveling.

Survivors include three daughters, Genieva Myers of Elmwood, Altha Pelz of Omaha and Loretta (Mrs. Jim) Fielder of Grand Island; 19 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her three husbands, she was preceded in death by two sons, one daughter, two grandsons, one great-grandson, two brothers and three sisters.

Dorothy Anderson

HASTINGS -- Dorothy J. Anderson, 85, of Regency Retirement Center in Hastings, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services and burial will be private at the request of the deceased.

Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to ARC of Lincoln/Lancaster County.

Mrs. Anderson was born icon Sept. 28, 1914, in Salt Lake City to Charles Sanford and Caddie (Stewart) Jones. She graduated from high school in Salt Lake City.

She married Dr. John Sheridan Anderson in Omaha on Sept. 18, 1937. They lived in Gordon from 1938 to 1947 and in Grand Island from 1947 to 1975. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Anderson was instrumental in starting the Easter Seal Campaign for children in Nebraska in the 1950's. She also was active for many years with the Grand Island Community Theatre. After 18 years of retirement in Arizona, Dr. and Mrs. Anderson moved to the Regency Retirement Center in Hastings.

Survivors include four sons, Sheridan T. Anderson M.D. and J. Paul Anderson, both of Grand Island and James S. Anderson and Robert L. Anderson, M.D., both of Hastings; and three grandchildren.

Ivan Hunkins

BROKEN BOW -- Ernest Ivan Hunkins, 83, of Broken Bow, died Sunday at the Jennie Melham Medical Hospital. He had lived at Jennie Melham Medical Heritage Hall.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent. Pastor Wayne Rouse will officiate. Burial will be in the Arcadia Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The casket will be closed at the services.

Memorials are suggested to the Arcadia Fire and Rescue Units.

Mr. Hunkins was born icon June 19, 1916, in Arcadia to Ernest and Bessie (Wells) Hunkins.

He grew up and attended Pleasant Valley School and Arcadia High School, graduating in 1937. He attended Kearney Teachers College for one year.

He married Blanche Chittock Sept. 23, 1939, at Ogallala. They lived two years north of Arcadia and in 1944 they moved 3 and 1/2 miles south of Comstock. He was a farmer. Mrs. Hunkins died in August 1990. Mr. Hunkins continued living on the farm until 1992 when he moved to Arcadia.

Because of failing health he moved to Heritage Hall in January 1999.

He was a member of the Methodist Church in Comstock and the Baptist Church at Arcadia.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley (Mrs. Leo) Evans of LaJunta, Colo. and Anita (Mrs. Tim) Spencer of Omaha; one son, Lyle Hunkins of St. Paul; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by two sisters, Edith and Sythera Strong.

Jane Kinney

ST. PAUL -- Jane H. Kinney, 99, of St. Paul died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Rev. Melanie Adams will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery at Scotia.

Visitation will be before services on Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Salvation Army or the donor's choice.

Mrs. Kinney was born icon on May 29, 1900, near Cedar Rapids to Robert and Emma (Davis) Best. She began her education in Missouri and completed it in Nebraska in rural schools in Boone and Greeley counties.

She married Lloyd Kinney on Dec. 21, 1916, at Fullerton. The couple lived on farms in Greeley County and on a ranch in Wheeler County. They retired and moved into Scotia in 1960. Mrs. Kinney moved to the Parkside Annex in St. Paul in October 1984 and to the Heritage Living Center on Jan. 26, 1999.

She enjoyed crocheting, growing flowers and baby-sitting.

Survivors include a son, Robert of Norfolk; a daughter, Evelyn (Mrs. John) West of Grand Island; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Her husband died on Aug. 9, 1967. She also was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Dorothy Marie; a grandson; two brothers, Orval and Julius Best; and five sisters, Effie and Myrtle Best, Grace Bair, Amy Turner and an infant sister.

Rose Larsen

ST. PAUL -- Rose Larsen, 99, of St. Paul, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Rev. Robert Carlson Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in the Oakridge Cemetery at Dannebrog.

Visitation will be on Wednesday prior to the services at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mrs. Larsen was born icon Sept. 21, 1900, at Dannebrog to Hans and Caroline (Christensen) Hatt. She grew up in Dannebrog and attended school there. After her education she helped her father at home because of the death of her mother.

She married Albert Larsen, Nov. 10, 1920, in Dannebrog. The couple lived in Dannebrog and she had a beauty shop in her home. In 1940 they built Larsen Bowling Alley in St. Paul. They also had Larsen TV Repair in St. Paul and Dannebrog. In the early 1950s they moved to St. Paul where they operated the bowling alley until 1963.

They also operated the Larsen Apartments. Mr. Larsen died Sept. 27, 1980. She continued managing the apartments until 1989. She lived in Lebensraum in Grand Island before moving to Heritage Living Center at St. Paul.

Her hobbies included crocheting and painting.

Survivors include a nephew, Russell Hatt of Grand Island and two nieces, Phyllis (Mrs. Glen) Minne of Dannebrog and Arlene (Mrs. Charles) Hansen of McCook

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Alton.
