Rebecca Zlomke
ORD -- Rebecca Zlomke, 92, of Ord died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Ord United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jim Miller will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the hospital or the church.
Mrs. Zlomke was born
June 23, 1907, on a farm in Garfield County to Marion and Cora (Kester) Wright. She rew up in Burwell and on farms in Garfield County., She attended school at Bur well and graduated from Burwell High School.
She then began to teach school at rural school District 44 in Valley County and taught for two years at Ballagh. During the summers Mrs. Zlomke attended the Teachers College at the University of Nebraska.
She married Elmer Zlomke on April 16, 1927, at Ord. They moved to Ord in 1928. Mr. Zlomke died on Oct. 4, 1983.
She was active in many groups and organizations. She was a 70-year member of the Ord United Methodist Church. She was a member and teacher of the Friendship Sunday School Class and had served on he Administrative Board and served as a Nebraska Methodist Conference officer of the Women's Society of Christian Service and United Methodist Women. She also attended many general conferences of the United Methodist Church.
She had taught the Bethel Bible Series, taught Sunday School for a number of years and worked as secretary for the Ord United Methodist Church. She was also secretalry for State Farm Insurance office and had a mimeographing service busness of her own. She had been a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Ord Matrons and Order of the Eastern Star of which she was Past Worthy Matron. She had been a member of the Ord Women's Club and BPW and had received the Golden Heart Award. During World War II she gave over 100 hours of her time in the Ground Observer Corps.
Her hobbies included knitting, reading, working in her garden and she also had written some poetry. She was a Husker Football fan. She enjoyed traveling. Her greatest joy was her church and serving the Lord.
Survivors include two son, Maynard of North Platte and Wayne Zlomke of Ord; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Elm,er and Clarence and two sisters, Cora and Martha.
Elaine Hansen
BLAIR -- Elaine M. Hansen, 71, of Blair, formerly of Grand Island, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, at the Blair Hospital.
Services are pending with Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
LaDonna Jensen
HALSEY -- LaDonna M. Jensen, 50, of Halsey died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, at her home in Halsey.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Anselm's Catholic Church in Anselmo. The Rev. Mark Maresh will officiate. Burial will be in the Purdum Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
A memorial has been established to the Nebraska Cancer Society.
Mrs. Jensen was born
March 7, 1949, at Kearney to Alva L. and Louise (Ripp) Meadows. She attended St. James Parochial School, Kenwood Elementary School and graduated from Kearney High School in 1967.She also attended Kearney State College.
In 1968, she married Roger Jensen at Smith Center, Kan. They lived in Fremont. In 1976, they moved to Halsey. She was employed at the Halsey National Forest for 16 years.
Mrs. Jensen was a member of the Halsey Service Club and was a qualified E.M.T. She enjoyed camping and fishing.
Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Tammi Maarie Davidson of Broken Bow; two grandchildren; her mother, Louise Langharn of Kearney; and one brother, Greg Meadows of Dibble, Okla.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Doris Berney
BRIGHTON, Colo. -- Doris Berney, 80, of Brighton, Colo., formerly of Wolbach, died Aug. 5, 1999, at a Denver hospital.
She was cremated.
Mrs. Berney was born
on Aug. 10, 1919, on a farm near Palmer to Hubert and Hattie (Stark) McCray. She grew up in Nance County. She attended the Cottonwood rural school and Wolbach High School.
She married Alfred Berney on Nov. 1, 1939, at Wolbach. The couple lived there until moving to Denver.
Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Shirley Jensen of Brighton; one son, Dennis of Brighton; three grandchildren; two sisters, Leila (Mrs. Cliff) Czya of Alliance and Louise (Mrs. Leonard) Wondercheck of Fullerton; and two brothers, Kenneth McCray of St. Paul and Robert McCray of Wolbach.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Everett McCray.
Joel Holbrook
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Joel Michael Holbrook, 33, of Kansas City, Mo., formerly of Central City, died at his home in Kansas City.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Central City. The Rev. Debra Tompsett-Welch will officiate. Inurnment will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday in the Orcard Hill Cemetery in Orchard.
Solt Funeral Home of Central City is in charge of arrangements.
Joseph McAlevy
ABERDEEN, S.D. -- Joseph Michael McAlevy, 13, of Aberdeen, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen, S.D.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Merna Cemetery. The Rev. Doug Jones will officiate.
A memorial has been established to the family.
Joseph was born
Sept. 7, 1986, at Salt Lake City, Utah to Michael Dan and Kimberly Sue (Wilcox) McAlevy. When he was four, the family moved to Rock Springs, Wyo. In February of 1998, they moved to Aberdeen, S.D.
Survivors include his parents; three brothers, Daniel, Luther and Andrew, all of Aberdeen; paternal grandmother, Leona McAlevy of Merna and maternal grandmother, Darlene Hoovermale of Rock Springs, Wyo.
Margaret Brown
Margaret L. Brown, 74, of Grand Island, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church. The Rev. John D. Russell will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Kleine Funeral Home Chapel with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to St. Pauls Lutheran Church or the donor's choice.
Clay Dixon
W. Clay Dixon, 89, of Grand Island died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Del Roper will officiate. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at the Palisade Cemetery with the Rev. Eldon Elsberry officiating.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to Trinity United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.
Mr. Dixon was born
on Feb. 1, 1910, in Wayne, Kan., to Dalo and Vesta (Spencer) Dixon. At an early age, Mr. Dixon moved with his family from Kansas to Scottsbluff, where he was raised and educated.
He began farming near Scottsbluff.
He married Laura Belle Duncan on Dec. 22, 1934, in Scottsbluff. The couple moved to Idaho in 1939, and Mr. Dixon farmed in the western part of the state until 1952.
The couple returned to Nebraska and farmed near Naponee and Palisade. Mrs. Dixon died in 1975. Mr. Dixon continued to farm until retiring in 1982. He moved to Grand Island in 1991.
He married Berniece Schroeder on Sept. 25, 1994, in Grand Island.
His hobbies include gardening and fishing.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the AKITA Club at the church, as well as the American Association of Retired Persons in Grand Island.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Dolo Dixon of Yelleville, Ark.; three daughters, Elizabeth (Bess) Redden of Minneola, Kan., Nancy Belle Dadey of Grand Island and Helen Mae Schilke of Imperial; one stepson, Gene Scarborough of Grand Island; 13 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.
In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Jean Dixon; three brothers and two sisters.
Evelyn Hill-Hargens
Evelyn M. Hill-Hargens, 81, of Grand Island died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at Tiffany Square Care Center.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church. The Rev. Joel Schroeder will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Kleine Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Hill-Hargens was born
on Jan. 27, 1918, on the Stoltenberg farm south of Grand Island to John and Ida (Wilhelmi) Stoltenberg. Her father died when she was 2 years old, and her mother raised her on the Wilhelmi farm northwest of Grand Island. She was educated at District 18 School in Hall County.
As a young woman, she worked for the Louie Scheel family doing housework and caring for two small children. Later she worked for Betts Nursing Home and Model Laundry in Grand Island.
She married James M. Hill on Sept. 25, 1938, in Grand Island. They were partners in farming and business throughout their marriage. They operated a gas station at Fourth and Elm streets. They farmed northwest of Grand Island and then east of Cairo.
In 1951, they purchased a home at Fifth and Eddy. That location was the beginning of the Hills Market and later the Hills Exchange Store, where they sold used furniture and operated a pawn shop.
In 1976, they sold the business and retired. Mr. Hill died on April 6, 1982.
She married Delbert Hargens on Feb. 5, 1988, in Grand Island. Mr. Hargens died on Aug. 28, 1994.
She later helped her son and family, working in sales at the current Hills Furniture Store until her 80th birthday.
She was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church and the Platt-Duetsche Ladies Society.
She enjoyed attending horse races at all the Nebraska tracks. She also attended many high school sporting events. She enjoyed playing pitch and sheepshead.
Survivors include one son, Thomas Hill of Grand Island; two stepdaughters, Beverly Harders of Wood River and Donna Dankert of Grand Island; one stepson, Tim Hargens of Grand Island; one granddaughter; six stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
In addition to her two husbands, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Betty Jean Hill; and a brother, Elmer Stoltenberg.
