Lowell Cassell

LOUP CITY -- Lowell D. Cassell, 62, of Loup City died Saturday, July 15, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Peters Funeral Home in Loup City. The Rev. Jim Nichols will officiate. Burial will be in Verderette Cemetery south of Loup City.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Cassell was born icon on May 6, 1938, in Omaha to Edward and Velma (Rollin) Cassell. He grew up and attended school in Fremont.

He married Anise E. Thessen on June 9, 1973, at the First Christian Church in Fremont. He worked as a truck driver for Tillman Transfer Trucking Co. in Fremont and later as an ambulance driver in Beatrice.

The family moved in 1978 to Loup City, where he drove a mail truck for several years. The family moved to a farm northwest of Loup City in 1993.

He enjoyed farming, hunting, fishing and going to auctions.

He was a member of the former Seventh-day Adventist Church of Loup City.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Tonya Cassell of Loup City; two sons, Tracey of Loup City and Travis of Westerville; one granddaughter; three stepgrandchildren; three brothers, James of Fremont, Ernest "Marvin" of Escondido, Calif., and his twin, Lyle Cassell of Lincoln; and two sisters, Wilma (Mrs. Lloyd) Donahoo of Omaha and Donna (Mrs. Ron) Miller of Hawaii.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Dwayne Cassell.

Grace Kunze

CENTRAL CITY -- Grace L. Kunze, 90, of Central City, formerly of Palmer, died Monday, July 17, 2000, at IHS in Central City.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Palmer. The Rev. Robert Schilling will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Palmer.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Palmer's Funeral Home in Palmer.

Oscar Macomber

HASTINGS -- Oscar L. Macomber, 72, of Hastings died Saturday, July 15, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church in Hastings. The Rev. Jim Miller will officiate. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Island.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings. Further visitation will be one hour before service time Wednesday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Fund or Mary Lanning Hospice.

Mr. Macomber was born icon on Oct. 20, 1927, northwest of North Platte to Frank Leslie and Elise Josephine (Solt) Macomber. His family moved often, and he attended many schools. He graduated from Grand Island High School.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Yokahama, Japan. He became a meat cutter in 1948 for Jack and Jill and worked for Jack and Jill stores in Lexington and Hastings for 41 years, retiring on March 30, 1989.

He married Ruth Elizabeth Commins on July 30, 1950.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Nancy Stenger of Centreville, Va., and Judy Macomber of Norfolk, Va.; one son, Jerry Macomber of Rockville, Md.; and one sister, Marge Burrows of Giltner.

Rose Rozmiarek

LOUP CITY -- Rose H. Rozmiarek, 67, of Loup City died Sunday, July 16, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Josaphat's Catholic Church in Loup City. The Rev. Tom Mullowny will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Loup City.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m., with a sodality rosary at 4 p.m., Tuesday at Higgins Funeral Home in Loup City. Visitation will continue from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church, with a vigil service at 7:30 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mrs. Rozmiarek was born icon on Sept. 25, 1932, at Ashton to Leo and Helen (Kochanow-ski) Kwiatkowski. She attended St. Francis Catholic School and Loup City High School. She attended the University of Nebraska for two years.

She married Raymond Rozmiarek on May 21, 1960, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Ashton. She lived in Ord from 1960 to 1972 and had lived in Loup City since 1972.

She taught school, worked for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service and the Farmers Home Administration.

She was a member of St. Josaphat's Catholic Church and its rosary society.

Survivors include her husband; three sons, Kenneth of Norfolk, Daniel of Tecumseh and Steve of Columbus; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one brother, Donald Kwiatkowski of Ashton.

She was preceded in death by one son, Michael; and one daughter, Helen Christine.

Opal Schuett

CAIRO -- Opal I. Schuett, 87, of Cairo died Sunday, July 16, 2000, at Beverly Healthcare Lakeview in Grand Island.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Cairo United Methodist Church. The Rev. Alan Davis will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery south of Cairo.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Apfel Funeral Home in Cairo.

Memorials are suggested to the Cairo Senior Citizen Center or the church's paving project.

Mrs. Schuett was born icon on Feb. 20, 1913, in Cairo to Charles and Elpha (Hodgson) Kemptar. She grew up and was educated in Cairo.

She married Edwin C. Schuett on Nov. 9, 1938. The couple lived on the family farm. Mr. Schuett died in September 1972. Mrs. Schuett lived on the farm until 1973, when she moved to Cairo.

During the late 1960s and early 1970s, she worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant near Grand Island. She worked in outreach for senior citizens in Hall County in 1974 and joined the Nebraska Senior Citizens Council. She helped organize a meal program for Cairo's older residents and later helped develop the Cairo Senior Citizen Center.

Mrs. Schuett had been chairwoman of the Hall County Democratic Party and served on the Cairo Community Center Board and Hall County Community Action Board. She served on the board and was a past president of the Nebraska Senior Citizens Council. She also served as District 41 Silver-Haired senator.

She was a member of the Cairo Roots Society and helped compile information for a book published about Cairo families. She enjoyed reading and was known to younger community members as "Grammie."

Survivors include one son, Edwin of Littleton, Colo.; one daughter, Sherry Kissler of Cairo; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, William "Bud" Kemptar.

Melvin Prorok

LAVESTA, Colo. -- Melvin Prorok, 57, of LaVesta, Colo., formerly of Columbus, died Friday, July 14, 2000, at LaVesta, Colo.

Services are pending.

Mr. Prorok was born icon on Feb. 14, 1943, at Genoa to Sylvester and Clara Prorock.

Survivors include his wife, Geraldine of LaVesta; his father, of Valley; and one brother, Duane Prorok of Valley.

Sherman Smith

LAS VEGAS -- Sherman Dale Smith, 63, of Las Vegas, formerly of Grand Island, died Friday, July 14, 2000, in Las Vegas as a result of a car accident.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at All Faiths Funeral Home, 2929 S. Locust St., Grand Island. Mr. Smith was cremated, and inurnment will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Smith was born icon on Aug. 25, 1936, at Scotia to Harold Ambrose and Marvel Lucile (Shipman) Smith. He grew up and was educated in Ord, graduating from Ord High School in 1955. He attended Kearney State College for two years.

Mr. Smith married Karon Neumeyer on Feb. 17, 1957, at Ord. They lived in Grand Island.

He married Susan Rosenberry on June 26, 1982, at Shelby. Mr. Smith worked for the Four Seasons Industrial Paint Co. of Lincoln, retiring in February 1998. They moved to Las Vegas in 1998.

In Grand Island, Mr. Smith was a member of the Platt-Duetsche Society and the Saddle Club. He was a volunteer at Hoover Dam and also volunteered for the Ladies Professional Golf Association and Professional Golf Association tour. He was an avid Husker football fan.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Colin C. of Omaha; one daughter, Stephanie (Mrs. John) Placzek of Grand Island; four grandchildren; a sister, Opal Schoemaker of Aurora, Colo.; and one brother, Darrel Smith of Ord.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Verlin Smith.

LeRoy J. 'Lee' Wakefield

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- LeRoy J. "Lee" Wakefield, 87, of South Euclid, Ohio, died Saturday, July 15, 2000, at his home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Gregory the Great Church in South Euclid.

Mr. Wakefield was born icon on Oct. 9, 1912, in Cleveland. He graduated from Cathedral Latin High School in 1930 and later studied at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and Fissler School of Music.

Mr. Wakefield was an orchestra conductor, traveling across the country with his band, the Lee James Orchestra. He taught music in Cleveland and composed music for the Cleveland Public Library during World War II.

He later worked for 28 years as an agent and staff manager at Prudential Insurance Co. He retired in 1974 and traveled extensively.

Mr. Wakefield enjoyed playing the piano and was a member of St. Gregory the Great Church and Cleveland Federation of Musicians Local 4 of the American Federation of Musicians.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Betty; two sons, Donald of Pierpont, Ohio, and Jerry of Cleveland; two daughters, Sister Carole of Grand Island and Sister Praxedes of Pepper Pike, Ohio; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Audrey Valentine.

Ida Anderson

Ida Marie Anderson, 101, of Grand Island, formerly of Halsey, died Thursday, July 13, 2000, at Tiffany Square Care Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 9 a.m. Monday at the United Church of Christ in Halsey. The Rev. Linda Martin will officiate. Burial will be in the Purdum Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. at Govier Brothers Mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the United Church of Christ at Halsey and the Nebraska Children's Home.

Mrs. Anderson was born icon Oct. 21, 1898, in Nemaha County to Nicholas and Mary (Grable) Wirz. At the age of 10 she moved with her family to the Sandhills and attended school at Halsey.

On June 1, 1919, she married Hal Anderson at Thedford. They lived on a ranch near Halsey. After they retired from ranching, they traveled extensively. Mr. Anderson died in 1990. Mrs. Anderson had lived at Tiffany Square Care Home in Grand Island for the last 11 years.

Mrs. Anderson was a member of the United Church of Christ at Halsey, Women's Fellowship and the Project Club. She enjoyed reading to residents at Tiffany Square and at the Conestoga Mall Literary Program. She also enjoyed helping other residents at Tiffany Square and helping fold towels. She loved to crochet and do fancy work.

Survivors include one son, Ken of Grand Island; three daughters, Lois (Mrs. John) Maslack of Englewood, Florida, Thelma Bates of Springfield, Ore. and Shirley (Mrs. Don) Steinacher of Omaha; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Elsie Lucy of San Diego and Rosa Rumsey of Seward.

Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers.
