Lynn Christensen

ST. EDWARD -- Lynn L. Christensen, 52, of rural St. Edward, died Sunday, May 28, 2000, of an apparent drowning accident while fishing near Stanton.

Services are pending with Levander Funeral Home in Albion.

Ellen Sheeks

WOOD RIVER -- Ellen L. Sheeks, 87, of Wood River died Sunday, May 28, 2000, at Western Hall County Good Samaritan Center in Wood River.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River. The Rev. John McKinley will officiate. Burial will be in Wood River Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Parkinson's Foundation or Good Samaritan Center.

Mrs. Sheeks was born icon April 28, 1913, to John and Janet (Jensen) Rounds at Ryegate, Mont. The family later moved to Wood River. She graduated from Wood River High School in 1931.

She married James H. Sheeks on Nov. 7, 1931, in Wood River. They lived in Wood River throughout their married life. She worked at Walter's Cafe in Wood River and Grand Island Lutheran Memorial Hospital.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Wood River, where she taught Sunday school for many years, and Royal Neighbors of America.

Survivors include three sons, James Jr. of Cairo, Dale of Grand Island and Delbert of Alda; one daughter, Donna Gewecke of Wood River; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one brother, Delbert Rounds of Cairo; and one sister, Jane Kelly of Campbell, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one brother, Sheldon Rounds; and one sister, Beth Jensen.

Richard Casteel

KILGORE -- Richard James Casteel, 64, of Kilgore, formerly of Burwell, died Sunday, May 28, 2000, at his home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell. The Rev. Marty Robbins will officiate. A private family burial will take place later.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at Sandoz Chapel of the Pines in Valentine.

Visitation will resume from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday at Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell. Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Casteel was born icon Sept. 25, 1935, to Milford and Dorothy (Baker) Casteel in Westerville. He grew up in Westerville and attended District No. 39 School at Westerville. He graduated from Ansley High School.

He married Berneta Rohde on June 28, 1955. They lived in Burwell and Valentine, where he worked in ranch management.

He was a member of Sandhills Cattle Association. He enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife of Kilgore; one son, Gregg of Burwell; four grandsons; one great-grandson; and one sister, Shirley Marsh of Grand Island.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Patsy J. 'Pat' Echelberger

LONGMONT, Colo. -- Patsy J. "Pat" Echelberger, 56, of Longmont, Colo., formerly of Marquette, died Sunday, May 28, 2000, at her home following a battle with cancer.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Westview Presbyterian Church in Longmont. The Rev. Carol Swartzendruber will officiate. A private burial will take place at Foothills Gardens of Memories in Longmont at a later date.

There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to Longmont Chapter of Hospice of Boulder County.

Howe Mortuary in Longmont, Colo., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Echelberger was born icon Oct. 5, 1943, to Edwin and Esther (Howland) Emken in Aurora. She graduated from Marquette High School in 1961. She also attended Lincoln School of Commerce.

She married Sam Echelberger on Dec. 13, 1964, in Marquette. The couple lived in Brush, Colo., prior to moving to Longmont in 1970. She worked as an office manager for RE/MAX in Boulder until March.

Survivors include her husband; her mother of Grand Island; two sons, Michael and Darin, both of Longmont; one daughter, Shannon of Longmont; three grandchildren; four brothers, Ron of Grand Island, Gary of Massachusetts, Alan of Kearney and David Emken of Aurora; and three sisters, Vicki Kunz of Denver, Marilyn Lantzer of Minnesota and Dorothy Minton of Tampa, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her father and one brother, Marvin Emken.

Thelma Schweitzer

BROKEN BOW -- Thelma M. Schweitzer, 77, of Broken Bow died Friday, May 26, 2000, at LGH East in Lincoln.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow. The Rev. Keith Archer and the Rev. Eldon Elsberry will officiate. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday at Govier Brothers Mortuary.

Burial will be in the Round Valley Cemetery outside of Broken Bow.

Memorials are suggested to the Prairie Pioneer Center in Broken Bow.

Mrs. Schweitzer was born icon Aug. 16, 1922, in Round Valley to Arthur and Anna (Neuman) Ellingson. She attended Round Valley School through the 10th grade and graduated from Broken Bow High School.

She married Clyde R. Schweitzer on Feb. 18, 1942. The couple farmed in the Broken Bow area and she also worked at J&J accounting as a tax consultant.

She was a member of the First Mennonite Church in Broken Bow and the Church of God in Broken Bow. She enjoyed gardening, pool and card parties and her Thursday morning Bible Study group. She was involved with the Broken Bow Prairie Pioneer Center, where she was treasurer.

Survivors include four sons, Leon, Kelly and Rod of Broken Bow and Marv of Arnold; two daughters, Ila (Mrs. Jim) Dramse of Grand Island and Roberta (Mrs. Jim) Schweitzer of Cairo; 18 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; and one brother, Leonard.

Pauline Smith

BROKEN BOW -- Pauline I. Smith, 77, of Broken Bow died Saturday, May 27, 2000, at LGH East in Lincoln.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow. The Rev. Royce Buchtel will officiate. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. on Monday at Govier Brothers in Broken Bow.

Burial will be in Broken Bow Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.

Mrs. Smith was born icon July 18, 1922, in Westerville, to Alpheus and Edna (Fiscus) Casteel. She attended school at Westerville.

She married William Smith on June 5, 1947, in Broken Bow. The couple lived in Ansley before moving to a ranch near Dunning in the spring of 1948. They retired in 1968 and moved to Broken Bow, where she worked at Chapin-Davis paint store.

She was a member of the Broken Bow Does and the Eastern Star.

Survivors include two daughters, Valerie (Mrs. Mike) Halpin of Beaver Crossing and Deb Smith of Broken Bow; three sisters, Maxine Copsey of Ord, Louise Wolford of Broken Bow and Genevieve Laux of Hastings; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and daughter, Linda.

Victoria Urbauer

COTESFIELD -- Victoria "Vicky" Urbauer, 34, of Cotesfield died Tuesday, May 23, 2000, at her home on Cotesfield following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna. Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery. Rasmussen Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Urbauer was born icon March 26, 1966, in Grand Island to Marvin and Edna (Wells) Cords. She grew up in the Ravenna area and graduated from Ravenna High School in 1984.

She married Matthew Urbauer in 1990 in Grand Island.

She was a member of the Salvation Army Church in Grand Island.

Survivors include one daughter, Katie; one son, Mark; her parents, Edna and Marvin Leak of Dannebrog; three sisters, Vonnie Cords of Storm Lake, Iowa, Valeria Wetgit of Columbus and Veronica Cords of Hastings; two brothers, Vance Cords of Storm Lake and Mike Cords of Ravenna; and her fiancé, Dale "Dusty" Preiss.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Jean Wolford

BROKEN BOW -- Jean Wolford, 82, of Broken Bow died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at Jennie M. Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday

Mrs. Wolford was born icon Feb. 20, 1918 in the Dutchman Valley community east of Broken Bow to Floyd C. and Belle A. (Neth) Rapp. As a youth, she moved with her family to Westerville. She attended the Westerville school.

She married Harold Wolford on June 1, 1935. The couple farmed at Westerville until 1942, when they moved to Dutchman Valley. In 1962, they moved to Broken Bow and retired. Mr. Wolford died on March 10, 1984.

Mrs. Wolford was a 4-H leader. After moving to town, she was a Tri-Chem dealer. She was a member of Custer Campers, Prairie Pioneer Center and the United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Walter and Don of Broken Bow; two daughters, Edith (Mrs. Frank) Connely of Broken Bow and Willa Wolford of Albion; 12 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Meyer.

Richard Brown

Richard L. Brown, 70, of Grand Island died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services are pending with Livingston-Sonderman Funeral Home.

Ruth Frick

Ruth E. Frick, 90, of Grand Island died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at Tiffany Square Care Center.

Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Joyce (Mrs. Clarence) Stoner of Grand Island and Marilyn (Mrs. Domenick) Calvi of Summerlin, Nev.; four grandchildren; and one sister, Lydia Sinner of Northglenn, Colo.

'Marcy' Janovec

CHAPMAN -- Marcelline A. "Marcy" Janovec, 76, of Chapman died Wednesday, May 24, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Central City. The Rev. James Janovec will officiate. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7:30 p.m., with a vigil service at 7:30 p.m., Friday at the church.

Solt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Janovec was born icon on April 27, 1924, in Clarks to Jacob J. and Josephine (Lassek) Zoucha. She grew up in Clarks and graduated from Clarks High School in 1941. She attended Nebraska Central College in 1955 and taught at District 55 School north of Clarks and for three years at District 29 School near Chapman.

She married Joseph V. Janovec on Aug. 26, 1947, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Clarks. They lived northwest of Chapman, where they farmed. Mr. Janovec died on Jan. 13, 1994. Mrs. Janovec continued living on the family farm.

She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Central City, St. Michael's Altar Society, Catholic Daughters Court Queen of Peace 2227, had been a 4-H leader, a member of Pleasant Ridge Extension Club and the Grand Island Area Retired Teachers Association. She volunteered her time at Chapman Public School for five years as a "grandma aide" for third-graders. She also volunteered as a CCD teacher at St. Michael's Catholic Church.

Survivors include two sons, Dave Janovec and Dennis Janovec, both of Chapman; one daughter, Rita Burch of Chapman; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Marie Zoucha of Clarks; and one brother, Lambert Zoucha of Clarks.

Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Ben and Adrian Zoucha and an infant brother; and an infant sister.
