Marie Assendrop
ST. LIBORY -- Marie E. Assendrop, 96, of St. Libory died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Libory Catholic Church. The Rev. Walter Phelan will officiate. Burial will be at the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the church, with a 7:30 p.m. parish rosary.
Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Miss Assendrop was born
July 10, 1903, at a farm south of St. Libory to Barney and Mary (Steinbach) Assendrop. She attended Howard County rural schools and St. Libory's Catholic parochial school.
She cared for her parents on the family farm east of St. Libory.
In 1961, she moved into St. Libory where she lived until November 1995. She moved to the Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.
She enjoyed gardening and crocheting.
She was a member of the St. Libory Catholic Church and its Council of Catholic Women and Confraternity of Christian Mothers.
Survivors include a niece, Betty (Mrs. Gary) Schwenk of St. Libory and a nephew, Edward Assendrop of St. Libory.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward and John.
Victor Atchity
HASTINGS -- Victor M. Atchity, 80, of Hastings died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church. The Rev. Larry Gyhra will officiate. Burial with military rites will be at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings.
Visitation will be one hour prior to service time Tuesday at the church, with a rosary at 10:30 a.m.
Memorials are suggested to Hastings Catholic Schools.
Mr. Atchity was born
Jan. 4, 1920, at Kansas City, Mo. to James A. Sr. and Anna (Fatall) Atchity.
He married Leona Hoefer on June 30, 1942, in Kansas City, Mo. He owned and operated Atchity's Food Marts for 45 years in Kansas City before retiring in 1980. After retiring, he moved to Hastings.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Guadalcanal.
He was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was a past member of several grocery retail associations.
Survivors include his wife of Hastings; two daughters, Jackie Hunt of Grand Island and Janet Spallo of Kansas City, Mo.; four sons, Richard of Grand Island and Victor "Mike," Dan and John, all of Hastings; 23 grandchildren; one sister, Lorraine Hake of Leawood, Kan.; and one brother, Dr. James Jr. of St. Joseph, Mo.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Selma Martin; and three brothers, Anthony, Ed and Fred.
James Bandeen
CENTRAL CITY -- James Bandeen, 89, of Central City died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at Integrated Health Services in Central City.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Cemetery in York.
Mr. Bandeen was born
Nov. 9, 1910, at Inez, Texas to Howard and Maude (Convill) Bandeen. He was educated on the West coast.
He served in the U.S. Army and received civil service training with U.S. Postal Services. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service, running a Portland, Ore. post office.
He married Hazel Ditloff, and they were married for more than 60 years.
After retiring from the U.S. Postal Service, Mr. Bandeen moved to Nebraska where he farmed and raised Angus cattle.
He enjoyed hunting, farming and raising livestock.
Survivors include two brothers, Don of Cloverdale, Calif. and Eugene of Warrenton, Ore.; and four sisters, Marguerite Coxe of Oregon City, Ore., Elsie Calavan of Portland, Ore., Hazel Oesther of Scappoose, Ore. and Joyce Bowman of Corvallis, Ore.
He was preceded in death by his wife and a sister, Fern Haire.
Frances Baran
ORD -- Frances Baran, 87, of Ord died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. The Rev. Jim Warner will officiate. Burial will be at the Ord Catholic Cemetery. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., with a rosary at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, the St. Mary's School Endowment Fund or the Ord Rescue Unit.
Mrs. Baran was born
May 23, 1912, at Valley County to Joe and Bertha (Jablonski) Konkoleski. She attended school districts No. 60 and 48.
She married Anton Baran on Nov. 4, 1936, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Elyria. They farmed northwest of Elyria until 1973, when they retired and moved to Ord. Mr. Baran died May 21, 1975.
Mrs. Baran was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, the Altar Society, Cursillo No. 7, Ladies VFW Auxiliary, the hospital auxiliary and the No Lo card club.
Survivors include two sons, Harold of Greeley, Colo. and LaVern of Omaha; two daughters, Darlene Toczek of Grand Island and Carolyn Slagle of Cedar, Minn.; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Clara Kokes of Ord and Matilda Zulkoski of Elyria.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Floyd Konkoleski.
Leonard Jisa
HASTINGS -- Leonard M. Jisa, 75, of Hastings died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church. The Rev. David F. Bourek will officiate. Graveside services with military rites will be at 2 p.m. at the Central City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Monday with a rosary service at 8 p.m. at Butler-Volland Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service time Tuesday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to St. Cecilia's Bus Fund.
Mr. Jisa was born
Feb. 24, 1925, at Loma to Charles and Agnes (Ruzicka) Jisa. He graduated from Polk High School in 1945.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from March 22, 1945, to Nov. 22, 1946.
He married Mary L. McMahon on Sept. 8, 1948, in Central City. They farmed for 16 years in Polk, Clarks and Central City. They moved to Hastings in 1964, where Mr. Jisa worked for Farmland Industries for 23 years. He retired in 1986.
He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Men's Club, Knights of Columbus and volunteered for Meals on Wheels. He was also an active member of Hastings Catholic Activities Association.
Survivors include his wife of Hastings; three daughters, Cecilia (Mrs. Melvin) Stenzel of Monroe, Susanna (Mrs. Matthew) Boeding of Hastings and Vivienne (Mrs. Don) Johnson of Hastings; a son, Timothy of Hastings; 14 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; four sisters, Mary Ann Hofmann of Kentucky, Betty Jean Horn of Waco, Texas, Agnes Simcox of Huntington Beach, Calif. and Ilene Woebbecke of Shawnee, Kan.; and a brother, Charles Jisa of Omaha.
He was preceded in death by three sons, James, Joseph and Michael; and a brother, Eugene.
Alice Prokes
SCHUYLER -- Alice Prokes, 69, of Schuyler died Friday, April 28, 2000, at Clarkson Memorial Hospital in Omaha.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Schuyler. The Rev. Don Legacie will officiate. Burial will be at Schuyler Cemetery.
Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Monday at the Kracl Funeral Home Chapel, and from 9:30 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to St. John's building fund or the Kidney Foundation.
Mrs. Prokes was born
Aug. 3, 1930, at Schuyler to Frank and Hazel (Legler) Kral. She graduated from Schuyler High and Midland Lutheran College in Fremont.
She married Richard Prokes on Dec. 27, 1953. They farmed in the Schuyler area.
Mrs. Prokes was an elementary school teacher for 41 years.
She was a member of the Nebraska State Education Association and the Kidney Foundation. She was also a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Schuyler.
Survivors include nephew Michael Vanicek of Grand Island.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, a sister, Ardeth Vanicek and an infant brother, Arnold Kral.
Anna Anderson
Anna M. Anderson, 80, of Grand Island died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at Riverside Lodge.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the Humane Society or the donor's choice.
Mrs. Anderson was born
on Jan. 30, 1920, at Mound City, Mo., to George Edward and Edna (Markt) Alkire. She grew up at Council Bluffs, Iowa, and graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1937.
She received her nurse's training from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha and graduated in 1942.
She married Dr. Harvey Anderson on Jan. 12, 1946, at Waukegan, Ill. The couple moved to Grand Island in 1947 after Dr. Anderson was discharged from the Navy. They moved to Lincoln in 1984. Dr. Anderson died in 1991. Mrs. Anderson moved to Riverside Lodge in November 1999.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and enjoyed golf, reading and bridge.
Survivors include one grandson; one great-grandson; two sisters, Elizabeth Sorensen of Kalispel, Mont., and Maxine (Mrs. Lyle) Teel of Central City.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Carrie Hank; and one sister, Betty Lou.
