Rebecca Mehring Zimmerman

Rebecca L. Mehring Zimmerman, 54, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at St. Francis Memorial Health Center after a long bout with cancer.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Cathedral. The Rev. Tom Ryan will officiate. Mrs. Mehring Zimmerman was cremated. Burial will be at a later date in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

A rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mrs. Mehring Zimmerman was born icon on Jan. 4, 1945, in Spalding to Eugene "Zimmy" and Monica (Naughtin) Zimmerman. She grew up and attended schools in Alda, Wood River and Grand Island before graduating from Grand Island Senior High in 1963.

She married Joseph Liebsack on Jan. 11, 1964. While her husband served in the U.S. Air Force, she worked for several military installations including the Air Force Academy, the North American Air Defense Command and Offutt Air Force Base. While at NORAD, she received a Sustained Superior Performance Award.

She married Donald Mehring on May 6, 1971. She was a homemaker and enjoyed being a room mother and Cub Scout den mother while her children were young. She then worked for Citizen Advocacy and for the Internal Revenue Service for four years. She was employed by ITC for eight years before her illness forced her to retire.

She was a past member of the Stolley Park PTA, Crime Stoppers, the Nebraska Coalition of Victims of Crimes and ROAL. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Animals held a special place in her heart, especially her Scottie dogs. She loved music, dancing and movies. She also collected Scottie memorabilia.

Survivors include two sons, John M. Mehring and Chris S. Mehring, both of Grand Island; a grandson; her mother, Monica Zimmerman of Grand Island; and her brother, Rick Zimmerman of Daytona Beach, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Helen Chramosta

RAVENNA -- Helen A. Chramosta, 82, of Ravenna died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Ravenna. The Rev. Rod Pruss will officiate. Burial will be in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery south of Ravenna.

A wake service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church. Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Chramosta was born icon on March 2, 1917, on a farm south of Ravenna to Joseph and Mary (Kleimot) Chramosta. She spent her early years on the farm and was educated in rural Buffalo County schools.

She was a caregiver. She had worked for Safeway Stores, Henningson's and as a cook for various cafes in Ravenna, including Scottie's Cafe. Her culinary skills were many, but she was well known for her kolaches.

She liked animals and the outdoors. She took great pride in her yard and garden. She always had flowers blooming from early spring to late fall. Her flowers graced the sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church for many years.

She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and the Council of Catholic Women.

Survivors include one brother, Charles H. Chramosta of Ravenna; and one sister, Mary Chramosta of Ravenna.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Joe Chramosta.

'Bud' DeLashmutt

BURWELL -- Leslie Frank "Bud" DeLashmutt, 77, of Burwell died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Mr. DeLashmutt will be cremated.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First Congregational Church in Burwell. The Rev. Jane Ellefson will officiate. Inurnment will be in Cottonwood Cemetery in Burwell.

Memorials are suggested to the Burwell Legion Chair Lift Fund or the Burwell Community Fund for Library Improvement.

Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. DeLashmutt was born icon on Aug. 5, 1922, at Burwell to Frank and Frances (Coffin) DeLashmutt. He grew up in Burwell and graduating from Burwell High School in 1939.

He worked at the family's lumber yard, attended Doane College for two years and then entered the U.S. Army Air Force. He served for three years, three months and was discharged in March 1945.

He received his degree in business administration from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1948. He lived and worked in Arkansas and California before returning to Burwell.

He married Marguerite Grunkemeyer on Feb. 14, 1947, in Burwell. He was appointed postmaster in 1960. Mrs. DeLashmutt died on Oct. 1, 1962.

Mr. DeLashmutt married Beth Gyger-Grunkemeyer on June 4, 1966, in Grand Island. They lived in Burwell. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1982.

He was a member of Blazing Star Lodge 200 A.F. and A.M., American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Elks Lodge of Ord, the First Congregational Church, city council, University of Nebraska Advisory Council and Burwell Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include his wife; five sons, Frank of Oakland, Calif., Dave of Lincoln, Jim of Littleton, Colo., Steve of Burwell and Stan of Hastings; one stepson, Gary of Littleton, Colo.; eight grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and one brother, Harry DeLashmutt of Burwell.

In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Keith.

Wesley Garrett

CENTRAL CITY -- Wesley E. "Wes" Garrett, 72, of Central City died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City.

Services are pending at Solt Funeral Home in Central City.

Mary Rolf

FULLERTON -- Mary Rolf, 95, of Fullerton died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at Litzenberg Long-Term Care in Central City.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Palmer's Funeral Home in Fullerton. The Rev. Mary McQueen will officiate. Burial will be in the Main Cemetery at Belgrade.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Rolf was born icon on May 12, 1904, in Cedar Rapids to William Edward and Ida Belle (Beeson) Rathbun. She attended rural grade schools in Boone and Nance counties. The family moved in 1916 to Belgrade, where she attended Belgrade High School.

She married Alfred Rolf on April 27, 1925, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They lived and farmed in the Fullerton and Belgrade area. Mr. Rolf died in 1969.

Mrs. Rolf moved to Fullerton. She moved to Litzenberg Long-Term Care in Central City in 1998.

She enjoyed crossword puzzles, flowers, gardening and reading the Bible.

Survivors include three sons, John and Bill of Fullerton and Carroll of Albion; two daughters, Donna (Mrs. Ray) Dubas of Fullerton and Betty (Mrs. Robert) Gleason of West Des Moines, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Don; six sisters; and three brothers.

Robert Schutt

SHELTON -- Robert L. Schutt, 66, of Shelton died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, where he had been a patient for two weeks.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Shelton United Methodist Church. The Rev. Charles Spence will officiate.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in the Kearney Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the church.

Mr. Schutt was born icon on March 9, 1933, on a farm north of Shelton to Roy and Loretta (Cox) Schutt. He attended country schools and then Shelton public schools. He farmed with his father until he was called to the service in 1953.

He married Evelyn Crouch on Nov. 1, 1954, at Washington, D.C. After he was discharged from the service, he returned to Nebraska and farmed until his health would not allow him to continue.

He served on the District 10 school board. He enjoyed his ponies, rodeos, parades, horse sales and tractors.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Debra Anderson of Cozad, Roberta Stevens and Diane Wempen, both of Overton; two sons, Robert "Bobby" of Shelton and Kim of Gibbon; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a twin daughter, Donna Siebnaeler; and a sister, Barbara Blauhorn.

Lawrence Opfer

LINCOLN -- Lawrence C. Opfer, 89, of Lincoln died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Lincoln. The Rev. Mark Rosenau will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home. Further visitation will be one hour before services Friday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the church or Lutheran Hour Ministries.

Mr. Opfer was born icon on Sept. 16, 1909, in York County to Frederick and Pauline (Thieme) Opfer. He was a self-employed carpenter.

He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Lincoln.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Gene of Kenmore, Wash., and Lloyd of Kirkland, Wash.; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Herbert Opfer of York.

He was preceded in death by brothers and sisters.

Robert Turnquist

AXTELL -- Robert A. Turnquist, 76, of Axtell died Sept. 9, 1999, at his home after a prolonged illness.

Services were on Monday at the Axtell Bethphage Mission Chapel. Layton Funeral Home of Minden was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Turnquist was born icon on Nov. 23, 1922, in Omaha to Carl and Alma (Benson) Turnquist. He graduated from Omaha Tech High School.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in England and France. After the service, he attended the Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis.

Mr. Turnquist served at Bethphage Mission in Axtell, became a member of the Bethphage Diaconate and was known for many years as Brother Bob.

He married Helen Elaine Dahlgren of Wakefield.

During 48 years at Bethphage, he served as attendant, teacher, activities director, executive director and archivist. While working there, he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at Kearney State College. This past June, a statue was dedicated on the Axtell campus in tribute to his many years of service.

The Turnquists were very involved in the Tre Kronar Scandinavian Society. They reigned as Swedish King and Queen in 1996 and were named Honored Swedes in 1999. Mr. Turnquist was also inducted as an admiral in the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska in 1998.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Axtell. He wrote "Heart of the Hill," a collection of vignettes about Bethphage Mission, in 1987.

Survivors include his wife; five daughters, Mary (Mrs. Richard) Anderson and Karla (Mrs. Darry) Axtell, both of Funk, Ruth (Mrs. Monte) Sheffield of Wallace, Janet (Mrs. Michael) Cavanaugh of Minden and Beth (Mrs. Bradley) Allmand of Holdrege; 15 grandchildren; and one sister, Ellen Moyer of Ashland.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Alvar, Dick and Paul; and three sisters, Vera Wright, Alice Petersen and Margaret Turnquist.
