Mary Duran

ST. EDWARD -- Mary Duran, 86, of Cloverlodge Care Center in St. Edward died Saturday, Aug. 7, 1999, at Boone County Hospital in Albion.

Services are pending with Levander Funeral Home in Albion.

Dewayne Hemmerling

GIBBON -- Dewayne G. "Squirt" Hemmerling, 70, of Gibbon died Saturday, Aug. 7, 1999, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Omaha.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Faith United Church in Gibbon. The Rev. Barbara Spangler will officiate.

Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, with military graveside rites by the Kearney V.F.W. Post No. 759 and National Guard Colors.

Godberson Mortuary of Gibbon/Shelton is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be held prior to the service at the church.

Mr. Hemmerling was born icon Nov. 24, 1928, at Wood River to Elmer and Ruth (VanHoosen) Hemmerling. The family moved to Gibbon in 1936, and Mr. Hemmerling graduated from Gibbon High School that same year.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1950, and served during the Korean Conflict aboard the USS Salisbury Sound. He was discharged in 1954, and returned to Gibbon to enter the farming and cattle feeding business with his family.

He married Joan Vohland on June 12, 1955, in Gibbon.

Mr. Hemmerling served on the City Council and the Gibbon School Board, and was a lifetime member of the Kearney V.F.W. Post No. 759. He was also a member of the Gibbon Fire Department for 20 years.

Survivors include his wife of Gibbon; three sons, Kevin and Brian of Gibbon and Kyle of Wellington, Kan.; one granddaughter; and his mother, Ruth of Gibbon.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Derald.

Margaruite Hendren

WOOD RIVER -- Margaruite S. Hendren, 98, of Wood River died Saturday, Aug. 7, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River. The Rev. John McKinley will officiate. Further services will be Monday, Aug. 16 at the Bailey Funeral Home in Philadelphia, Penn.

Mrs. Hendren was born icon July 17, 1901, at Philadelphia to Jacob and Ceclia Sturm. She was educated in Philadelphia.

She married Oliver Hendren May 6, 1931, in Philadelphia. The couple was dairy farmers in Pennsylvania. Mr. Hendren died in 1992, at which time Mrs. Hendren moved to Wood River. She moved to the Lebenstraum Retirement Home in 1997.

She was a member of Leverington Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia and Radiant Chapter Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include one son, Oliver Hendren of Wood River; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by 12 brothers and sisters.

Lon Hervert

RAVENNA -- Lon Hervert, 51, of Ravenna died Saturday, Aug. 7, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Ravenna. The Rev. Rod Pruss will officiate. Burial will be in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery south of Ravenna. Christian Wake services will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Rasmussen Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the church.

Mr. Hervert was born icon Nov. 18, 1947, at Kearney to Fred S. and Sylvia (Schuller) Hervert. He graduated from Ravenna High School in 1966. He later attended the University of Nebraska at Kearney for two years.

He served in the U.S. Army for two years, where he was stationed in Vietnam in the 35th Scout Dogs.

He married Leann Kriha Feb. 5, 1977, in Ogalla. The couple farmed south of Ravenna.

Mr. Hervert was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church and the Holy Name Society. He was a lifetime member of both the V.F.W. No. 5820 and Legion No. 332. He was also a member of the M.O.C. and a past member of the Rural Fire Board.

Survivors include his wife of Ravenna; one son, Thomas Hervert of Ravenna; two daughters, Jennifer Hervert and Catherine Hervert both of Ravenna; his mother, Sylvia Hervert of Ravenna; one brother, Randy Hervert of Ravenna; and one sister, Christine Geisler of Pleasanton.

George Hiett

SCOTIA -- George C. "Buck" Hiett, 75, of Scotia died Saturday, Aug. 7, 1999, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Scotia. The Rev. Melanie Adams will officiate. Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery with grave side military honors.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Jacobsen Funeral Home of St. Paul.

Memorials are suggested to Scotia Rescue Unit or Scotia United Methodist Church.

Mr. Hiett was born icon July 27, 1924, at Scotia to Benjamin and Carrie (Linderman) Hiett. He graduated from Scotia High School in 1942.

He entered the U.S. Navy in 1943, serving during World War II. He was discharged in 1946.

He married Gladys Wilson March 9, 1946, in Ord. They lived in St. Paul.

Mr. Hiett was employed at the Union Pacific Railroad in Grand Island and Zlomke Furniture in St. Paul until 1966. The couple then moved to Scotia, where Mr. Hiett operated Scotia Hardware until retirement in 1987.

He was a member of Scotia United Methodist church, the Reuben-Beck American Legion Post No. 150 of Scotia and the V.F.W. of Ord.

Survivors include his wife of Scotia; a son, Michael of Scotia; a sister Elizabeth (Mrs. Ed) Klein of Juanita; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, James; and two sisters, Eileen Walkins and Norene Jensen.

Frank Spires

HORDVILLE -- Frank Dee Spires, 62, of Hordville died Saturday, Aug. 7, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. The Rev. Darryl Keeney will officiate. Burial will be in the Clarks Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Spires was born icon March 10, 1937, at Clarks to Robert and Nettie (Ernst) Spires. He graduated from Clarks High School in 1955. He worked for Behlen Manufacturing Company in Columbus until the mid 1960s.

He married Marlene M. Larson June 26, 1960, in Hordville. He worked for the Durant Elevator in Stromsburg and then was manager of the fertilizer plant in Wood River for the Grand Island Farmers Coop Elevator.

In 1969, the family moved to Stromsburg, where Mr. Spires was employed by the Farmer's Coop Association of York as a branch manager of the Thayer Coop. He then served as branch manager of the York facility until his retirement in 1998.

He enjoyed farming and hunting.

Survivors include his wife of Hordville; two sons, Tim of Central City and Mike of Columbus; three sisters, Imogene Abbott of Lincoln, Eileen (Mrs. Corky) Hansher of Clarks and Beverly (Mrs. Frank) Schuele of Columbus; four brothers, Robert of York, Dick of Omaha, Tom of Clarks and Dennis of McCook.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Robert Valentine

DENVER, COLO. -- Robert J. Valentine, 28, of Denver, formerly of Aurora, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, in Denver.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Higby Mortuary Chapel in Aurora. The Rev. Jerry E. Breese will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.

Mr. Valentine was born icon Jan. 20, 1971, at Aurora to Robert L. and Beverly (Goertzen) Valentine.

He lived and worked in Denver.

He was a member of the Grocers Union, where he obtained Journeyman status.

Survivors include his parents of Aurora; two sisters, Mary Valentine and Amy Valentine of Aurora; and grandparents, Merle and Adella Goertzen of Sweet Home, Ore. and Ruth Valentine of Aurora.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Robert E. Valentine.

Margy Kelsay

Margy Lou Kelsay, 68, of Grand Island died Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the All Faiths Chapel at the Grand Island Veterans Home. The Rev. William Forbes will officiate. Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Thurman Cemetery in Thurman, Iowa.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. until service time Monday at the chapel.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association or to the American Diabetes Association.

Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River is in charge of arrangements.

Harvey H. 'Happy' Miller

Harvey H. "Happy" Miller, 84, of Grand Island died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, at the Grand Island Veterans Home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. George Wheat will officiate. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Mr. Miller was born icon on Oct. 8, 1914, at Palmer to Julius and Emma (Brunk) Miller. He grew up and attended school in the Palmer area. He worked for many farmers in Merrick County.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army with the 67th Medical Attachment. Following his discharge, he worked in the shipyards in Portland, Ore. He returned to work on a farm near Scotia in 1945 and began work at the naval base in Hastings in 1951.

He married Greetha Lee in 1951 in Scotia. He worked for the Veterans Administration in Grand Island as a groundskeeper. When he had more than 25 years of civil service time, he retired and moved to Farwell. Mrs. Miller died on Feb. 16, 1979.

Mr. Miller married Gladys Lich on Feb. 13, 1980, at St. Paul. He worked for the Farwell Irrigation District until 1983. Mrs. Miller died in December 1992.

Mr. Miller was a member of the Methodist faith. He was a member of American Legion Post 119 of St. Paul for 45 years.

Survivors include four stepsons, Gary Lich of Longmont, Colo., Terry Lich of Madison, Danny Lich of Garland, Texas, and Dean Lich of Saginow, Texas; three stepdaughters, Mary (Mrs. Howard) Stoll of Loogootee, Ind., Shirley Curuso of Papillion and Anita Pavlik of Norfolk; 19 stepgrandchildren; and 10 stepgreat-grandchildren.

In addition to his two wives, he was preceded in death by a stepson, Larry Lich; and three brothers.
