Kenesaw resident Wayne B. Marsh, 97, died Saturday, July 24, 1999, at Kenesaw Haven Home.
Graveside services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Riverton Cemetery in Riverton with the Rev. Kathleen Kasper officiating. Visitation is noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.
Mr. Marsh was born Nov. 18, 1901, to Charles and Stella (Blois) Marsh in Amherst. On Sept. 26, 1933, he married Esther Rehn. He retired from the Kearney Police Department in 1966. He then moved to Hastings. On Jan. 21, 1989, his wife died. He lived at Good Samaritan Village until 1992 when he moved to The Kensington in Hastings. In 1999, he moved to the Kenesaw Haven Home.
He was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church and a life member of the Odd Fellows.
Survivors are one daughter, LaNelda Long of Prescott, Ariz.; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Memorials may be given to the Shriners.
Viola Lindberg

Edgar resident Viola (Frandson) Lindberg, 91, died Saturday, July 24, 1999, at Integrated Health Services nursing home in Edgar.
Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Rick Cepris officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Lindberg was born Aug. 12, 1907, to Nels Peter and Annie Marie (Hansen) Frandson in Clay County. She worked in Lincoln in her early life. On May 12, 1954, she married Kenneth Lindberg. She and her husband farmed near Clay Center for 37 years. In 1991 they moved to Hastings. They then moved to Integrated Health Services Nursing Home in 1996. On Aug. 2, 1996, her husband died.
She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Clay Center, the Bethel Club, Ladies American Legion Post No. 87, all in Clay Center. She also was a member of the Clay County Extension Rolling Pin Club and the Clay County Garden Club.
Survivors are two sisters, Abba Overturf of Hastings and Edith George of Exeter, Mo.
She was preceded in death by one brother.
Memorials have been established.

Hastings resident Anna Carol (Schwartzkopff) Alexander, 91, of Good Samaritan Village Villa Grace died Saturday, July 24, 1999, at Villa Grace.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at GSV All Saints Chapel with the Rev. Bill Liddell officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Tuesday at the chapel.
Mrs. Alexander was born Jan. 3, 1908, to Fredrick and Julia (Dallinger) Schwartzkopff in Longmont, Colo. On Aug. 26, 1925, she married M.C. Alexander in Hastings. She worked as a cook at Ruby's East Gate Cafe and the Carter Hotel, both in Hastings. Her husband died in 1979.
She was a past member of the Second Presbyterian Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors are one daughter, Mary Ellen Gates of Gainesville, Texas; one son, Stanley of Grand Island; nine grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the family.

Hastings resident Henry W. Gartner, 79, died Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services are 2 p.m. Friday at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Rev. Kathleen Kasper officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and 8-11 a.m. Friday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hastings.
Mr. Gartner was born Aug. 31, 1919, to Henry H. and Fannie (Janssen) Gartner in Holstein. On March 20, 1940, he married Lucille Albers. In 1943 he began farming near Trumbull. In 1945 he moved near Hastings. On Oct. 13, 1996, his wife died.
He was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings, Knights of Pythias and a past board member at District No. 48 School.
Survivors are four daughters, Janice Meyer of Hastings, Sandra Buhr and Debra Bonham, both of Doniphan, and Pam Palmer of Kearney; two sons, David and Edwin, both of rural Hastings; four sisters, Alma Woodward and Fannie Hill, both of Hastings, Luella Varah of Doniphan and Mary Alexander of Grand Island; four brothers, Elmer of Hansen, Harold of Ayr, Everet of Manitou Springs, Colo., and Donald of Giltner; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.
Memorials may be given to the family's choice.
Urban J. Schmitt

Hastings resident the Rev. Urban Jacob Schmitt, O.S.C., 80, died Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Wake services are 7:30 p.m. Thursday and services are 10:30 a.m. Friday, both at Crosier Monastery in Hastings with the Very Rev. James G. Moeglein, O.S.C., officiating. Burial will be in the monastery cemetery. Visitation is 3:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday and 8:30 a.m. until services Friday at the Monastery Chapel.
The Rev. Schmitt was born July 19, 1919, to Peter and Mary (Klehr) Schmitt in St. Martin, Minn. He attended District 22 grade school in St. Martin and Crosier Seminary in Onamia, Minn. In 1943 he entered the Crosier Novitiate in Hastings. On Aug. 28, 1944, he made his first profession of vows. On June 4, 1949, he was ordained by Bishop Louis Kucera in Hastings. In 1958 he took graduate courses from Fordham University in New York. In 1959 he took classes at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ill. From 1950-53, he was assistant pastor at St. Vincent's Church in Elkhart, Ind. From 1953-58 he was pastor for St. Patrick's Church in Highland and St. Ann's Church in Doniphan. From 1958-64 he was on the staff of Our Lady of the Lake Seminary in Syracuse, Ind. From 1964-66 he was pastor of Holy Family Church in Moose Lake, Minn., and Holy Trinity Church in Barnum, Minn. From 1966-73 he was assistant pastor at St. Odilia's Parish in Shoreview, Minn. From 1973-94 he was pastor at St. Helena's Church in Grafton and St. Patrick's Church in McCool Junction. Since 1994 he did substitute work at various parishes in the Diocese of Lincoln. In 1996 he worked at St. Michael's parish in Albion. In 1997 he worked at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Neligh and then St. Anthony Church in Cedar Rapids. In 1998 he returned to Hastings to live at Crosier Monastery.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors are six sisters, Mildred Dingmann of Richmond, Minn., Sister Claire and Sister Miriam, both of Annunciation Monastery in Bismarck, N.D., Arnelda Winczewski of Belleville, Ill., Louise Heurung of Eagan, Minn., and Eleanor Otremba of Nisswa, Minn.; three brothers, the Rev. Silverius of Royalton, Minn., and Joseph and Wilfred, both of St. Martin, Minn.
He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Memorials may be given to the Crosier Fathers and Brothers.
Marjorie E. Stiles

Hastings resident Marjorie E. (Brown) Stiles, 88, of 516 N. Hastings Ave., died Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village Villa Grace in Hastings.
Services are 10 a.m. Friday at Brand-Wilson Funeral Home chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Earl Higgins officiating. Burial will be in Roseland Cemetery in Roseland. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Stiles was born March 25, 1911, to Bob and Amy (Gilna) Brown on a farm south of Hastings. In 1929 she graduated from Hastings Senior High School in Hastings. She was employed at the Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital cafeteria in Hastings. On Dec. 1, 1969, her husband, Ozro Stiles, died.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Hastings.
Survivors are four daughters, Wilma Roth of Kearney, Janice Gentert of Lincoln, Karen Adler of Susanville, Calif., and Beverly Howe of York; one son, Darwyn of McComb, Miss.; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one sister and one grandchild.
Memorials will be established.
John J. Consbruck

Hastings resident, John J. Consbruck, 88, died Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Rosary is 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings. Services are 10 a.m. Friday at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Hastings with the Rev. Larry Gyhra officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mr. Consbruck was born Dec. 18, 1910, to Jacob and Clara (Bohr) Consbruck in Ayr. From 1942-46 he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. In 1951 he began working as an electrical serviceman for Hastings Utilities. In 1974 he retired. On June 8, 1975, his wife, Esther Beiriger, died. On Aug. 19, 1978, he married Augustine M. (Brouillette) Horton at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church.
He was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, 4th degree Knights of Columbus, VFW, Eagles, American Legion and 40-8, all of Hastings.
Survivors are his wife; two stepsons, Ronald Horton of Hastings and Robert Horton of Lincoln; two stepdaughters, Shirley Haberman of Wenatchee, Wash., and Joanne Dunn of Riverbank, Calif.; one brother, Charles of Iowa; one sister, Rose Moore of New Mexico; and many stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to Crosier Apostolate of Hastings.
Bonnie J. Porter

Chester resident Bonnie J. (Van Cleef) Porter, 70, died Monday, July 19, 1999, at her home.
Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Chester with the Rev. Nancy Keller officiating. Burial will be in Chester Cemetery in Chester. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today at Bachelor-Faulkner-Dart-Surber Funeral Home in Chester.
Mrs. Porter was born July 29, 1928, to George D. and Willa (Holly) Van Cleef in Hubbell. On June 2, 1948, she married Harold R. Porter. She worked as a chairwoman on the board of directors of the State Bank in Chester. On Dec. 14, 1995, her husband died.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Chester and United Methodist Women and was treasurer of the Chester Cemetery Board.
Survivors are three sons, Alan of Chester, Warren of Houston and Timothy of Olathe, Kan.; and five grandchildren.
Darwin Steiger

Former Tribland area resident Darwin Steiger, 80, of Peoria Heights, Ill., died Wednesday, July 7, 1999, at his home.
Services were July 12 at Wilton Mortuary in Peoria, Ill.
Mr. Steiger was born Feb. 8, 1919, to Max and Freda (Issler) Steiger in Grafton. He and his family lived in Fillmore County. He graduated from Sutton High School. On Jan. 7, 1950, he married Mary E. Schmitt in Peoria. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a sheet metal worker until he retired. After retirement, he served as commissioner of Peoria Heights Police and Fire Department and a supervisor of Tower Park in Peoria Heights. He also was a volunteer firefighter for several years. On May 14, 1992, his wife died.
He was a member of American Legion Post No. 61 in Sutton, the NAMAC Club in Peoria Heights, Lions Club in Peoria Heights, the Peoria Casting Club in Chillicothe, Ill., and the Sheet Metal Workers Local 1 in Peoria Heights.
Survivors are two sons, Dennis of Peoria and Kenneth of Chillicothe; two daughters, Ellen Moyer of Heyworth, Ill., and Betty Jewell of Peoria Heights; four brothers, Roger of Washington, Ill., Rex of Winter Haven, Fla., Ira of Hastings and Jerry of Beatrice; six sisters, Gretchen Griess of Sutton, Letha Kamler and Valjean Reinsch, both of Geneva, Cleo Snow of Glenvil, Ruthella Diedrickson of Clay Center and Deanna Thornburg of Loveland, Colo.; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers.
Max Steiger

Former Tribland area resident Max Steiger Jr., 71, of Peoria, Ill., died Sunday, June 27, 1999, at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria.
Services were June 30 at Davison-Fulton Woodland Funeral Home chapel in Peoria.
Mr. Steiger was born Oct. 26, 1927, to Max Sr. and Freda (Issler) Steiger in Grafton. He and his family lived in Fillmore County. He graduated from Sutton High School. From 1945-48 he served in the U.S. Navy. On Aug. 16, 1951, he married Mary Evelyn Carter. He worked for Caterpillar Inc. for 36 years as parts procurement coordinator at the Mossville, Ill., plant. In 1984 he retired. On July 8, 1990, his wife died.
He was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Peoria and the Sutton American Legion Post in Sutton.
Survivors are one daughter, Cynthia Steiger-Stevens of Peoria; one son, Michael of Wake Forest, N.C.; four brothers, Roger of Washington, Ill., Rex of Winter Haven, Fla., Ira of Hastings and Jerry of Beatrice; six sisters, Gretchen Griess of Sutton, Letha Kamler and Valjean Reinsch, both of Geneva, Cleo Snow of Glenvil, Ruthella Diedrickson of Clay Center and Deanna Thornburg of Loveland, Colo.; five grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers.
