Esther R. Cobb

Monday, April 24, 2000

Former Hastings resident Esther R. (Thurber) Cobb, 82, of Grand Island died Monday, April 24, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home chapel in Grand Island with the Rev. Harold Stromer officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Island. Visitation is 3-9 p.m. Thursday with family receiving friends from 7-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Cobb was born May 3, 1917, to Bert and Minnie (Diekoff) Thurber in Omaha. She grew up in Livermore, Iowa, and graduated from Livermore High School. On March 16, 1938, she married Les E. Hamburger in Hastings. They lived in the Hastings area and she worked at the Naval Ammunition Depot during World War II and the Korean War. In 1957 she moved to Iowa and then to Grand Island in 1963. On Nov. 25, 1973, she married Kenneth Cobb in Grand Island. He died in 1977. She moved to Hastings in 1979 and returned to Grand Island in 1992. She was a nurse's aide for several years at Lutheran Hospital and St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

She was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings.

Survivors are one daughter, Janelle Brown of Grand Island; two stepdaughters; three sons, Leslie Hamburger of Hastings, LeRoy Hamburger of Northglenn, Colo., and John Hamburger of Grand Island; three stepsons; 13 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by two sisters.

Memorials may be given to First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings.

Alice M. Culbertson

Sunday, April 23, 2000

Angus resident Alice Marie (Bueoy) Culbertson, 89, died Sunday, April 23, 2000, at Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior.

Graveside services are 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Edgar Cemetery with the Rev. Harold Fox officiating. Williams Funeral Home of Edgar is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Culbertson was born March 9, 1911, to Clarence V. and Etta E. (Palmer) Bueoy in Clay Center. On March 10, 1928, she married Joseph Harry Culbertson. They farmed near Angus. In 1981 her husband died.

Survivors are three sons, Billie Jo of Davenport, Rollan and Gary, both of Nelson; one daughter, Bonnie Wicker of Edgar; 12 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers; one sister; and one grandchild.

Mary E. Putman

Sunday, April 23, 2000

Esbon, Kan., resident Mary E. (Frost) Putman, 79, died Sunday, April 23, 2000, in Esbon.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Esbon with the Rev. Laura Fricker officiating. Burial will be in the Esbon Cemetery. Visitation is until 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Melby Mortuary in Mankato, Kan.

Mrs. Putman was born March 26, 1921, to Ralph W. and Edna (Clay) Frost near Esbon. She graduated from Esbon High School in 1939 and attended secretarial school for two years. From 1948-64 she lived in California and then returned to Esbon. She married Ed Putman.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Esbon.

Survivors are her husband; one daughter, Sandra Davis of Formoso, Kan.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Robert P. Kingsley

Friday, April 21, 2000

Holstein resident Robert Pomeroy Kingsley, 64, died Friday, April 21, 2000, at his home.

Private family services will be held. Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Kingsley was born March 26, 1936, to D.W. Sr. and Myra (Bowman) Kingsley in Hastings. He graduated from Hastings Senior High School and served two years in the armed services in Korea. He graduated from the University of Wyoming. He owned and operated a lumber brokerage in North Carolina and also was a licensed commercial flight instructor. He later returned to Hastings and was a stockbroker with First Mid-America and Merrill Lynch. At the time of his death, he was manager and part owner of Kingsley Farms.

Survivors are one sister, Carolyn Kingsley Emmons of Washington, D.C.; and one brother, D.W. Jr. of Hastings.

Memorials may be given to the Nebraska Wildlife Association.

Doris L. Chandler

Thursday, April 13, 2000

Memorial services for Doris L. Chandler of Blair, who died Thursday, April 13, 2000, will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Parkview Manor Social Hall in Blair. Private burial will be in the Tekamah Cemetery. Hamel-Peck-Pelan Funeral Home of Tekamah is in charge of arrangements.

Michael A. Rol

Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999

Former Hastings resident Michael A. Rol, 48, of Axtell, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999, in Kearney.

Services are 2 p.m. Monday at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings with the Revs. Harold D. Stromer and David deFreese officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is 5-9 p.m. today, 1-9 p.m. Sunday, 9 a.m. to noon Monday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Monday at the church.

Mr. Rol was born March 7, 1951, to Floyd and Louise (Uhrmacher) Rol in Hastings. He graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1969. On Aug. 20, 1972, he married Connie Fickenscher. They later divorced. He graduated from Kearney State College. He taught school and operated a feed store in Elm Creek. He had owned and operated Rol's Feed and Farm Supply of Axtell at the time of his death.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, the Eagles, Elks, Platte Valley Dancers, American Legion and the Kearney Bowling Association, all in Kearney. He also was a member of the Nebraska Softball Association and Ducks Unlimited. He was secretary of the Axtell Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors are three daughters, Jody Rol and Amy Rol, both of Lincoln and Mindy Rol of Denton, Texas; his father of Hastings; and one brother, Steven Rol of Hastings. He was preceded in death by his mother.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Elma Saltzman

Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999

Shickley resident Elma Saltzman, 88, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999, in Geneva.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Salem Mennonite Church near Shickley with the Rev. Wilton Detweiler officiating. Burial will be in the Salem Cemetery in Shickley. Visitation is 2-9 p.m. Sunday at Farmer and Son Funeral Home in Geneva.

Miss Saltzman was born Feb. 9, 1911, to John and Barbara (Lauber) Saltzman in Shickley.

Memorials may be given to the Salem Mennonite Church.

Meredith D. White

Friday, Aug. 20, 1999

Doniphan resident Meredith D. (Gregg) White, 72, died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Doniphan with the Revs. Jeff Hale and Gil Karges officiating. Burial will be in the Cedarview Cemetery. Visitation is 4-9 p.m. Sunday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island. The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m.

Mrs. White was born Dec. 6, 1926, to LeRoy and Leona (Cox) Gregg on the family farm near Trumbull. She attended District No. 39 School. She graduated from Trumbull High School in 1944. She worked on her father's combine harvest crew and for the Naval Ammunition Depot at Hastings. On Jan. 1, 1945, she married Gerald White in Grand Island. They then moved to a farm west of Doniphan. She worked for Wheelers and Holiday Inn, both in Grand Island.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, it's Women's Group and Afternoon Circle in Doniphan and the Hall County Historical Society.

Survivors are her husband; two sons, Maurice of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Craig of Doniphan; two daughters, Marilyn Flagle and Cindy Ellis, both of Doniphan; two sisters, Margaret Hardekopf and Arlene Nelson, both of Grand Island; six grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Treasa M. Reinboth

Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999

Geneva resident Treasa M. (McKenzie) Reinboth, 67, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999, at her home.

Rosary is 7:30 p.m. Sunday and services are 10 a.m. Monday both at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hebron with the Rev. Paul Sheehy officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation begins 3 p.m. today at Hebron Memorial Funeral Home in Hebron.

Mrs. Reinboth was born Jan. 18, 1932, to Richard L. and Delma L. (Brewer) McKenzie. She attended school in Hebron and graduated from Hebron High School. After high school, she attended beauty school and became a licensed beauty operator. On Aug. 18, 1952, she married Ralph W. "Bill" Reinboth at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hebron. He died March 6, 1973. At the time of her death, she was engaged to be married to Jim Brumbaugh of Geneva.

Survivors are three daughters, Kim Freeman of Lincoln, Laurie Haworth of Sutherland and Jill Bartling of Aurora; her mother of Hebron; two brothers, Doug of Kansas City, Mo., and Kirk of Hebron; one sister, Diane Currey of Hebron; and eight grandchildren.

Memorials have been established.

Elizabeth T. Waldron

Former Hastings resident Elizabeth T. Waldron, 94, of Lakewood, Colo., died Thursday, April 13, 2000, at Bethany Health Plex in Lakewood.

Services are pending with Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings.

Eunice Weingart

Wednesday, April 12, 2000

Former Tribland area resident Eunice (Willson) Weingart, 91, of Noblesville, Ind., died Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at her home.

Services are 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel at First Presbyterian Church in Hastings. Private graveside services will be at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Weingart was born Feb. 21, 1909, to George and Dora (Fassler) Willson in Blue Hill. She graduated from Blue Hill High School in 1927 and then from Hastings College in 1930. In June 1931, she married William Weingart. She taught school in Hastings for more than 24 years at Spencer Park and Alcott Elementary. She retired in 1974. Her husband preceded her in death.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors are two sons, Philip of Santa Ana, Calif., and David of Phoenix; one daughter, Meri Boosel of Noblesville; one sister, Mary Noftsger; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by two sisters.

Memorials may be given to the church.

Alyce R. Leary

Monday, May 1, 2000

Former Hastings resident Alyce Rita (Popp) Leary, 86, of Denver, died Monday, May 1, 2000, in Denver.

Services were May 5 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Denver. Horan McConaty Funeral Home in Denver was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Leary was born Sept. 24, 1913, to John Michael and Mary Elizabeth (Murphy) Popp in Omaha. She graduated from Sacred Heart School in Omaha and then worked with the Catholic Charities in Omaha. On Sept. 21, 1939, she married Robert Leary. They lived in Hastings and then Hays, Kan, before moving to Denver in 1964. In 1978 she became a receptionist, office manager and secretary for her husband's business, R.M. Leary & Co. Inc. in Omaha. She worked there for 20 years. In 1984 her husband died.

Survivors are five daughters, Sharon Huddleson, Sheila Daly, Michele Alexander, Kate Lee and Sue Allen, all of Denver; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to The Gathering Place, 1535 High St., Denver CO 80218, Hospice at Home, 390 Grant St., Denver, CO 80203 or charity of choice.

John F. Kassebaum Jr.

Saturday, April 29, 2000

Former Hebron resident John F. Kassebaum Jr., 66, of Fairfield, Calif., died Saturday, April 29, 2000, in Vallejo, Calif.

Services were May 7 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Fairfield, Calif. Burial will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Rose Hill Cemetery in Hebron. The remains were cremated. Price Funeral Home of Hebron is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Kassebaum was born Dec. 14, 1933, to John F. Sr. and Sophie Marie (Struempler) Kassebaum in Hebron. He attended Hackney Ranch Rural School and graduated from Hebron High School in 1952. He then attended Wartburg College in Iowa. He served in the U.S. Air Force and retired as a Master Sergeant. He then worked at the Mare Island Navy Shipyard in California as a recovery specialist for several years. His wife, Yoshiko, preceded him in death. His second wife, Asae, also preceded him in death.

He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church and a volunteer at Kaiser Hospital in Fairfield, Calif.

Survivors are his stepchildren; three brothers, Robert of Orlando, Fla., William of Sutton and Charles of Lincoln; one sister, Lorene Morey of Chicago; and his stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother.

Memorials may be given to the Martin Luther Home in Beatrice.
