EDWIN SMITH

Edwin O. Smith, 65, of Brooksville, Fla., formerly of Colebrook and Epsom, N.H., died on August 29, 2004 at Hospice in Brooksville after a period of failing health.

Born on November 3, 1938 in Stratford, he was the son of Glenn and Ruth (Kenny) Smith. He served in the Army from 1962 to 1965.

The family includes is wife, Juanita L. Smith of Brooksville; a daughter, Sara Stanley of Claremont, N.H.; three grandchildren; four brothers, Robert Kenny of Errol; William Smith of Tucson, Ariz., Herbert Smith of Columbia and Howard Smith of Manchester; four sisters, Rose LaRoche of Ocala, Fla., Alice Huntley of Raymond, N.H., June Erao of Londonderry, N.H. and Jennie Ayotte of Port Richey, Fla.

Graveside services were held on Wednesday morning at McClary Cemetery in Epsom. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hernando/Pasco Hospice, 1114 Chatman Blvd., Brooksville, FL 34601.

HAZEL BEAURIVAGE

Hazel M. (Cloutier) Beaurivage, 80, of Manchester, died on September 24, 2004 after a long illness.

She was born on October 2, 1923 in Manchester, the daughter of George and Emily (Perry) Cloutier, and was a graduate of Manchester West High School.

A lifelong Manchester resident, she had worked several years for the New Hampshire Truck Owners Association and was a retired employee of the city of Manchester Environmental Protection Division.

Mrs. Beaurivage had been active in, and was the former president of, the Women's Auxiliary of South Little League, and had been a member of the Memorial High School Booster Club. She had also been an active member of the Southern New Hampshire Snow Slickers snowmobile club. Mrs. Beaurivage enjoyed the Boston Red Sox and cooking, and she loved to read. She was a parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Church, and formerly Saint Theresa Church. Her husband, Raymond G. Beaurivage, predeceased her in 1978.

Members of her family include four sons, Bruce A. Beaurivage of Pittsburg, Jake Beaurivage of Kensington, Ronald J. Beaurivage and his wife Denise of Bedford, and Steven P. Beaurivage of Manchester; two grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth J. Cloutier of Manchester; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours were held at the Goodwin Funeral Home in Manchester on Monday evening. The funeral liturgy was celebrated at Blessed Sacrament Church on Tuesday morning, with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

BEVERLY BUMFORD

Beverly Bumford, 70, of West Stewartstown, died on Sunday evening, September 26, 2004 at her home, surrounded by her family.

Beverly was born on January 2, 1934 in Websterville, Vt,, daughter of the late Edson and Viola (Schoff) Bumford.

Beverly was a homemaker who also worked outside the home for a number of years. She served as a nurse's aide at the Coös County Nursing Hospital; worked in the sewing division of Codet for several years; repaired furniture for 14 years at Beecher Falls Division of Ethan Allen; and worked at Daley's Laundromat.

Her hobbies were numerous. She enjoyed puzzles, knitting, reading, doing crossword puzzles, quilting, moose watching and bowling. She was an active member of the Northland American Legion Auxiliary, Post #47 in Canaan, where she worked numerous suppers and bingo with her sister, Jill. She also served as a past member of the Pittsburg Grange. She will be remembered for her love of family and her enjoyment of holidays with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Beverly is survived by her five children, Susan Flanagan of Laconia, Corinne Brown and friend Eugene Ober of West Stewartstown, Scott Brown and his wife Shelly of West Stewartstown, Karlene Burnett and her husband Rich of Manchester, and Darlene Stone and her husband Sam J. of Berlin; five siblings, Donna Gray of Pittsburg, Jackie Flanders of Massachusetts, Phyllis Boedecker of Wisconsin, Fredric Bumford of Manchester, and Jill Roy of West Stewartstown; 18 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, September 29, from 7-9 p.m. at the Jenkins Funeral Home in Colebrook. A graveside service will be conducted on Friday at 1 p.m. at the Pittsburg Hollow Cemetery, with The Reverend Timothy McDowell officiating. Expressions of sympathy in Beverly's memory may be made to Scott Brown, PO Box 247, West Stewartstown, NH 03597, to assist with funeral expenses, or to a charity of one's choice.

PAUL BOBEY

Paul Bobey, 82, of Colebrook, died suddenly on Friday, October 1, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Bobey was born on March 27, 1922 in Manchester, son of the late John and Anna (Chudoka) Bobey.

He had eight brothers and sisters, having been preceded in death by a brother, Charles Bobey on June 5, 1999. One of his sisters, Theresa Bobey, currently resides in Londonderry. He is also survived by his home care provider, Donald Pichette of Colebrook.

There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be conducted on Thursday, October 14 at 4 p.m. at the Colebrook Village Cemetery, with The Reverend Priscilla Hull officiating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Jenkins Funeral Home of Colebrook. Condolences may be offered to the family on-line by going to www.jenkinsfuneralhome.net.

WINNIFRED McLAUGHLIN

Winnifred "Freddy" McLaughlin, 76, of Manchester and formerly of Berlin, died on September 28, 2004 at Catholic Medical Center.

Ms. McLaughlin was born on June 18, 1928 in Waltham, Mass., daughter of the late John and Mary (Dalton) Rourke. She was graduated with a bachelor of science degree in home economics from Framingham State Teachers College in Framingham. Freddy worked for 27 years as a field agent for the N.H. Cooperative Extension Service, educating school children about nutrition. After retirement, she worked as a Mary Kay cosmetic consultant for many years.

Freddy was an avid skier, and thoroughly enjoyed talking politics with her friends. She enjoyed skiing and hiking in Dixville Notch and had many friends in the local area.

She has 10 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Family members include her daughter Ann and her husband Keith Richards of Manchester; a son, John Rourke McLaughlin and is wife Sally of Manchester; a sister, Joan, and her husband Richard Gamble of Stinson Beach, Calif. She also leaves behind her former husband, Richard McLaughlin of Deerfield Beach, Fla.

There was a memorial reception on Friday, October 1, followed by a ceremony at Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium in Manchester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

SISTER ST. MARIE-LOUISE (GERTRUDE LARIVIERE)

Sister St. Marie-Louise (Gertrude Lariviere), of Hudson, of the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary, died on October 2, 2004 at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua.

Born on March 7, 1928, she was the daughter of Ludger and Marie-Louise (Desjardins) Lariviere. She entered the Order of the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary in 1946, and made her First Profession in 1949 and Final Profession in 1954. Sister St. Marie-Louise received a bachelor of education degree from Rivier College in Nashua.

She taught in the New Hampshire Catholic elementary schools served by the Presentation of Mary Sisters in Cascade, Presentation of Mary Academy, Hudson, Keene, Manchester and West Stewartstown, and with the Holy Cross Sisters at Infant Jesus School in Nashua. She also served in the Rhode Island Catholic elementary schools in Albion, Anthony, Phenix, West Warwick and Woonsocket.

She retired at the Marie Rivier Cenacle at Presentation of Mary Convent in Hudson. Sister continued her service as a teacher tutoring students at the Presentation of Mary Academy in Hudson.

Family members include a sister, Irene Lariviere Gagnon of Dover; a nephew, Robert Joseph Lariviere of Shrewsbury, Mass.; and several cousins.

Calling hours were held on Monday afternoon and evening at Presentation of Mary Academy in Hudson, with a prayer service that evening. The funeral Mass was celebrated on Tuesday afternoon at Presentation of Mary Academy Chapel, with burial in Presentation of Mary Academy Cemetery. Dumont-Sullivan Funeral Home of Hudson is in charge of arrangements.

LEE SMITH

Lee Smith, 42, of North Charleston, S.C., died on Friday, September 17, 2004 after a sudden illness at Summerville Hospital in North Charleston.

He was born on December 16, 1961 in Keene. He was a graduate of Pittsburg High School, and served in the Air Force for twelve years as a crew chief for B-52s.

He loved airplanes, country music and spending time with his wife. He was very fond of his two Yorkies, Rocky and Scooter. He is survived by his wife, Ann, of North Charleston, and his mother, Maxine Gokey of Pittsburg.

A memorial service was held on Sunday, September 26 at the Rivers Funeral Home in Goose Creek, S.C. Interment will be in the Pittsburg Cemetery sometime in November.

DORIS HELEN BERWICK

Doris Helen Berwick, 71, of Loudon, died on Tuesday, October 12, 2004 at Concord Hospital. She was born in Laconia, the daughter of Alfred B. and Lena M. (Champagne) Decato. She worked on the assembly line for Sprague Electric for 18 years and at the front desk at the Concord YMCA for 18 years. She was also the bookkeeper for her husband's company, Berwick Lumber.

She served on the Loudon Planning Board for 16 years and was chairman for four years. She was a member of the Pulmonary group and program chairperson of TOPS. She was a loving and spirited mother, grandmother and friend, who lived life to the fullest. She was an avid snowmobiler, and enjoyed their camp and North Country friends.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Kenneth "Mike" Berwick of Loudon; a son, Michael Berwick of Concord; two daughters, Susan Mounsey of Concord and Diane Rourke of Warsaw, Ind.; five grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and two sisters, Arlene Klocek of Candia and Maggie Emmons of Concord.

Calling hours were held on Thursday in the Church St. Chapel at the Bennett Funeral Home in Concord. Funeral services were on Friday at the funeral home, with burial in Moore Cemetery, Loudon. It was Doris' wish that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the CRVNA Hospital House, PO Box 1797, Concord, NH 03302-1797.

BETH BORDERS

Beth Mason Borders of Hanover, N.H., and Ft. Myers, Fla., died on October 12, 2004 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was the wife of Alton C. Borders, who died in September, 1983.

She was born in 1918 in Sutton, N.H., the daughter of William E. and Stella Fowler Mason. She was a homemaker who loved to travel. Her bag was always packed underneath her bed, just in case someone said, "Let's go." She loved life and had a very diversified one. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by two sons, Bruce E. Borders and his wife Nancy of Proctorsville, Vt., and Alton C. Borders II and his wife Susan of Carbondale, Pa., and Pittsburg, N.H.; two grandsons and two great-granddaughters.

She was the oldest of five sisters and three brothers. She was predeceased by one brother, William E. Mason Jr. of Meriden, Conn. Surviving are four sisters, Dorothy Dumont of Wallingford, Conn., Marion Louiselle of Middlefield, Conn., Kay Mailhot of Meriden, Conn., Richard of Claremont, N.H., and two brothers, Richard Mason of Milford, Mass., and Mervin Mason of Punta Gorda, Fla., and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the First Free Will Baptist Church in North Sutton on October 30. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1101 Hill Street, Jessup, PA 18434, or to the donor's favorite charity.

AARON CHADBOURN JR.

Aaron W. "Chad" Chadbourn Jr., 88, of Lee, died on October 11, 2004 at home. Born in Madbury on July 3, 1916, he was the son of Aaron W. and Marian (Libby) Chadbourn Sr. He was raised on Cape Cod and moved to Lee in 1946.

He was graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1938. During World War II he served in the Marine Corps, stationed at Pearl Harbor.

In 1946 he started Broadfield Farm in Lee, which he operated for 10 years. For several years, he served in the state legislature and was active in Lee politics. He later worked for Farmers Home until retiring.

For more than 40 years, he was a member of the Jeremiah Smith Grange in Lee. He was also a member of Lee Church Congregational, where he played the organ for many years. He loved children and playing Santa at the Church Christmas Fair.

He was a life member of Lee Memorial Post 10676 VFW, a member of Strafford County Soil Conservation, and a former volunteer with the Lee Fire Department.

He was predeceased by his wife of 44 years, Hannah "Sis" (Sheppard) Chadbourn, in 1985, and by his second wife, Elizabeth (Batchelder) Smart Chadbourn, in 1991.

The family includes his daughter, Joan C. Brady of Northwood; three grandchildren, Aaron W. Brady of Canaan, Vt., Ann Louise Thibeault of Northwood and Seth E. Newman of Phoenix, Ariz.; five great-grandchildren; longtime caregiver Jack Brown; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours were held on Wednesday, October 13 at Kent & Pelczer Funeral Home in Newmarket. The funeral was on Thursday morning at Lee Church Congregational, with the Rev. Brendon Bass officiating. Burial with military honors followed in Pine Hill Cemetery, Dover.

Memorial donations may be made to Make-A-Wish Foundation, 66 Hanover St., Suite 101, Manchester 03101-2230; to Lee Church Congregational, 17 Mast Road, Lee 03820; or to the charity of one's choice.

LUCIEN CHAREST

Lucien I. Charest, 58, of Nashua, died on Saturday, October 9, 2004 at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack.

Mr. Charest was born in St. Herménégilde, Quebec, on November 20, 1945, a son of Therese (Desorcy) Charest and the late Napoleon Charest. He was the husband of Therese (Gauthier) Charest of Nashua.

Mr. Charest was a Nashua resident for many years and was a communicant of St. Louis de Gonzague Church. He had been employed by AMSA Armored Car, and was formerly part owner in the R.H. Anderson Construction Co. He was an Army veteran. Mr. Charest was a member of the American Legion Post 483 and of the Lafayette Club, and a Knight of Columbus # 122 for 33 years.

Besides his wife, and mother Therese (Desorcy) of Coaticook, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Colleen Charest and Eric and Danielle Charest, all of Nashua five grandchildren; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Cecile Dion and Gisele and Victor Tardif, all of Nashua, and Pauline Charest of Ascot Corner, Quebec; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Pauline Charest of Colebrook; and several nieces, nephews and cousins

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Thursday morning in St. Louis de Gonzague Church. Burial will be at a later date. Visiting hours were held on Wednesday afternoon and evening at the Anctil-Rochette & Son Funeral Home in Nashua. Donations in Mr. Charest's memory may be made to the Community Hospice House, 210 Naticook Rd., Merrimack, NH 03054.

ROBERT GOOCH SR.

Robert William Gooch Sr., 80, died on Friday morning, October 15, 2004 at the Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital in Colebrook.

He was born on August 31, 1924 in North Brookfield, Mass., the son of the Reverend William S. and Marion (Tobey) Gooch. Mr. Gooch was a graduate of Peterborough High School, Class of 1942.

After graduation he joined the Navy, where he served in the Pacific theatre. After the war he was discharged as a lieutenant junior grade, and went on to attend the University of New Hampshire, graduating in 1948. He was married to Ellie Currier on November 25, 1950.

Mr. Gooch purchased Hill's Department Store in 1965 and ran it until selling to his son George in 1990. He was an auctioneer and ran the North Country Auction Service with his brother-in-law, Rick Stickney, for over 20 years.

A member of the Colebrook Fire Department from 1959 until 1984, Mr. Gooch served as Colebrook's fire chief from 1976 until 1984. He had served as a director of the First Colebrook Bank since 1972, as the bank's vice president from 1985 to 1997, and as bank president from 1998 to July of 2001. He was also the vice-chairman of the board of directors of the First Colebrook Bank. He was chairman of the First Colebrook Bancorp since July of 2001, and had also served as vice-chairman and member of that organization since 1984. He was a founder and original board member of the Colebrook Development Corporation.

Mr. Gooch was extremely active in community affairs, and had served as assistant town moderator for the Town of Colebrook. He was a past member of the planning board and the school board, and served as the commissioner of the Colebrook Water and Sewer Department. He was a longtime active member of the Colebrook Area Historical Society. Mr. Gooch worshipped at the Colebrook Congregational Church, where he served as Church Moderator.

Mr. Gooch is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Ellie Gooch of Colebrook; two sons, George Gooch of Colebrook, and Robert Gooch Jr. of Columbia; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Constance Perry and Marjorie Davis.

There were no calling hours. A memorial service was held on Sunday afternoon, October 17 at the Monadnock Congregational Church in Colebrook. Pastor Rebecca Larson officiated, assisted by the Reverend Oliver Northcott and the Reverend Albert Bellefeuille. Burial will be private.

Those who wish to make donations in memory of Bob W. Gooch Sr. may give to the Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital, Oncology/Hospice Department in care of Rosemary Mulliken, First Colebrook Bank, 132 Main Street Colebrook, NH 03576. Newman Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.

MICHELLE HAYNES

Michelle C. Haynes, 51, of Stratford, died suddenly at her home on Friday, October 15, 2004. Mrs. Haynes was born on June 30, 1953, in St. Malo, Quebec, daughter of the late Denis and Rose (Fontaine) Crete.

Mrs. Haynes was graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1972. She worked for a short period of time at Beecher Falls Division of Ethan Allen and served her country in the Army Reserve. She was graduated from Hesser College with an associate's degree in paralegal studies and worked for Judge Ivorey Cobb. She was employed as a bookkeeper for Nugent Oil Company for 14 years, and stayed at home for a period of time raising her daughter, Tiffany. Recently, she worked in the kitchen at the Stratford High School.

She was a very active and dedicated parishioner for Sacred Heart Catholic Church in North Stratford, and was involved in numerous town and school activities. She enjoyed crocheting and baking, and will be forever remembered as a loving wife, mother, sister and friend.

Mrs. Haynes is survived by her husband, Paul Haynes of Stratford; her daughter, Tiffany Haynes of Stratford; a brother, Gaetan Crete of Colebrook; three sisters, Gynette Bouchard of Goffstown, Priscilla Lambert of Stewartstown and Monique Crete of Goffstown; her husband's parents, Elwood and Beatrice Haynes of Stratford; a brother-in-law, Larry Haynes of Weare; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours were held on Sunday afternoon and evening, October 17 at the Jenkins Funeral Home in Colebrook. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in North Stratford, with The Reverend Daniel Deveau as celebrant. An interment service followed at the Colebrook Village Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy in Mrs. Haynes' memory may be made to the American Heart Association, N.H. Division, 2 Wall Street, Manchester, NH 03101.
