John C. Lane

OGUNQUIT, Maine - John C. Lane, longtime owner and producer of Ogunquit Playhouse, died quietly at his home in Qgunquit on Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000, after a long illness.

He will be best remembered for his indelible link to Ogunquit Playhouse. From the start of his ownership in 1951, he pledged to bring the greatest stars in the finest plays and musicals to his patrons, and he did so for the next 47 seasons.

He was known to all as a true gentleman who maintained high standards in theater, making Ogunquit Playhouse a most desirable summer theater destination for actors, actresses and patrons alike. The actors he brought to his theater form a Who's Who of American Theater History. The list includes Bette Davis, Tallulah Bankhead, Kitty Carlisle Hart, Hume Cronyn, Jessica Tandy, Basil Rathbone, Art Carney, Julie Harris, Sandy Dennis, David McCallum, Betsy Palmer and John Raitt. Many of their photographs, personally inscribed to John, adorn the walls of the playhouse lobby to this day.

He was born in Greensboro, N.C. His love of theater began at an early age, and he came north to enter the American Academy of Dramatic Art. After only one term, he made his first professional appearance in the revival of a play called "White Cargo." After several other appearances, he traveled to London and attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he was instructed by John Gielgud, Laurence Olivier and Ralph Richardson, among others. Upon his graduation, he stayed in England several more years and acted in plays until World War II called him home.

After five years of military service in the Army, he returned to the theater and made his first appearance at Ogunquit Playhouse as an actor in 1946. By then, his entrepreneurial spirit was taking hold and he bought a summer theater in Fairhaven, Mass., which he operated for four seasons. While there, he served as his own producer and appeared in a number of roles.

In 1950, Mrs. Maude Hartwig, who owned Ogunquit Playhouse, asked him to assist her in running the theater. By then he was married to Helen Macmillan Lane, a portrait artist, and had established a home in New York City. However, he accepted Mrs. Hartwig's challenge and found that he loved the playhouse, the town of Ogunquit and the coast of Maine. Following the 1950 season, the Lanes sold their New York home, moved to Maine, and John bought the playhouse from Mrs. Hartwig.

His first season was perhaps his most difficult, for the Thanksgiving hurricane of 1950 tore off the stage end of the theater. He turned his initial discouragement into the first of many successes. While struggling with repairs through the winter, he continued planning for the season to follow. Opening night came on time with Edward Everett Horton starring in "Springtime for Henry." That first season went on to include appearances by Basil Rathbone, Lillian Gish, Melvyn Douglas and Arthur Treacher.

One of his most significant accomplishments was to be among the originators of the Council of Stock Theatres, a coalition of primarily New England "Straw Hat" theaters. The alliance provided opportunities to share productions among the member theaters and bring otherwise unaffordable stars to mostly smaller venues. It was a system that allowed marvelous theatrical talent to be brought to the region for more than four decades.

His success in Ogunquit led to other opportunities. Primary among them was his partnership in the Royal Poinciana Playhouse in Palm Beach, Fla., where he was executive producer through the late 1970s. He enjoyed a seasonal residency in Palm Beach for many years and supported the Society of Four Arts and attended Bathesda by the Sea.

He loved to travel, particularly to London and Rome, and was an avid reader. He was also a passionate walker. His daily walks covered miles of the Lake Worth Trail and Flagler Drive in Palm Beach, Madison Avenue and Central Park in New York, and Marginal Way, Israel's Head and the beach in Ogunquit. A strong supporter of the arts, he gave the land for the Barn Gallery in Ogunquit and was a trustee of the Ogunquit Museum of American Art.

Though John and Helen Lane were divorced in 1965, they remained friends until Helen's death in 1987. His brother, Brown Lane, and sister, Virginia Pegram, both of North Carolina, survive him, as do three nephews, Wyatt Pegram, John Hoyle and Lawrence J. Hoyle Jr.

He was known for his humor, quick wit and hearty laughter, which he generously shared, and will be remembered by his numerous friends and the extended family of those who worked with him and for him at Ogunquit Playhouse.

He was devoted to maintaining the appearance of the theater and its grounds, which became known nationally for its beauty and eventually earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places. He was proud of its designation as America's Foremost Summer Theatre. Sitting as it does on the southern edge of town, he was determined the playhouse would provide a positive image to visitors of Ogunquit on their arrival and a lasting impression as they departed. His desire to preserve the playhouse for future generations led to his authorization to create the nonprofit Ogunquit Playhouse Foundation. In the defining act of his legacy, he gave the theater to the foundation in 1997.

He described Ogunquit Playhouse as the fruit of his life's labor, and he wished to be remembered through his theater.

LANE - John C. Lane died Oct. 29, 2000, at his residence in Ogunquit, Maine. There are no services. Memorial donations may be made to the Ogunquit Playhouse Foundation Endowment, P.O. Box 1439, Ogunquit, ME 03907. Arrangements by Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home.
