Mrs. Priscilla (Evitts) Poor

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Priscilla (Evitts) Poor, 82, of 3205 Lafayette Road, were held from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home- Buckminster Chapel on Sunday, with memorial services held at Middle Street Baptist Church.

The Rev. Vivan Martindale, pastor, officiated. Organist was Murray McNair.

In attendance were members of the church and representatives from Rivermouth Chapter No. 54, Order of Eastern Star.

Burial will be in New Riverside Cemetery, Alton, N.H., at the convenience of the family.

Michael J. Dagostino

EXETER - Michael J. Dagostino, 84, of Off Forest Street, died Monday, June 4, 2001, at Exeter Hospital after a brief illness.

Born Aug. 22, 1916, in Maynard, Mass., he was the son of the late Frank and Mary (Iannarelli) Dagostino.

A former resident of Dover, N.H., and Brighton, Mass,, he moved to Exeter in 1949, where he was a resident for more than 50 years.

He was the treasurer of the Exeter Rose Farms, which was started by his father back in 1939.

He was a prominent member of the Republican Party, and was close personal friends of President Bush, Gov. Jeanne Shaheen and Hugh Gregg.

A U.S. Navy veteran, he served as honorary base commander at Pease Air Force Base.

He served as police commissioner for the Dover and Exeter Police departments.

He was on the board of trustees for Exeter Hospital, the Indian Head and Salem banks, both in Salem, N.H. He was on the board of directors for Crotched Mountain, and served as director of parks in Dover.

He was a communicant of St. Michael's Church of Exeter and served as the youngest Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus in Dover.

He served as head of personnel for the Rockingham Park in Salem, N.H., for more than 50 years.

He was the husband of the late Margaret (Redden) Dagostino, who died Dec. 18, 1994.

Survivors include three brothers, Tony Dagostino, Benny Dagostino, and Frank Dagostino Jr., all of Exeter; one sister, Louise Dagostino of Exeter; and many nieces and nephews.

DAGOSTINO - Michael J. Dagostino, 84, died June 4, 2001. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, June 6, and from 2 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 7, at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 8, at St. Michael's Church (corner of Front Street and Lincoln Street), Exeter. Burial will follow in Exeter Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center, Greenfield, NH 03047.

James J. Kelley

TILTON - James J. Kelley, 78, formerly of Exeter, died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at the New Hampshire Veterans Home in Tilton.

Born in Lynn, Mass., on Feb. 4, 1923, he was the son of the late Leo F. and Mary (O'Connell) Kelley. He had resided in Exeter for nearly 25 years.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving aboard the USS Gleaves (DD-423).

He served as a United States federal mediator under President Ford and as the Massachusetts commissioner of labor under Gov. Furcolo. Previously he was the international representative for the AFL-CIO's IUE (union of electrical workers) and had formerly worked for General Electric in Lynn.

He was a graduate of Lynn Classical High School and attended Boston University. He was a former member of the Exeter Country Club and of the American Legion Post No. 32 of Exeter.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Maureen T. Kelley, in 1996; and by his brother, Donald Kelley, who died in World War II.

Family members include a son, Robert J. Kelley of New Durham; two daughters, Theresa A. Swan of Costa Mesa, Calif., and Kathleen K. Rush of North Hampton; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Thomas A. Kelley of Largo, Fla., and Daniel L. Kelley; and a niece and a nephew.

KELLEY - James J. Kelley, 78, formerly of Exeter, died June 3, 2001. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Hampton on Thursday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in the New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery in Boscowan. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the New Hampshire Veterans Home, Winter Street, Box 229, Tilton, NH 03276.

Alice L. Murphy

YORK, Maine - Alice L. Murphy, 99, of Sentry Hill, formerly of the Mark H. Wentworth Home in Portsmouth, died Sunday, June 3, 2001.

Born in Lewiston, Maine, Aug. 7, 1901, she was the daughter of John and Nettie (Frazier) Linney. She graduated from Jordan High School and Wilfred Academy, Boston. During her early years, she studied dancing and piano.

She lived for many years in Lynnfield, Mass., where she owned and operated a hairdressing salon in the Hotel Edison in Lynn, Mass. During World War II, she was first a solderer and then an inspector of gyroscopes at General Electric.

In 1965 she moved to Ogunquit with her late husband, William (Bill) Murphy, who was a prominent three-letter athlete at Boston University. He was a lawyer and investigator with the New Amsterdam Casualty Insurance Co. Upon his retirement, he was best known as the policeman in Ogunquit's Perkins Cove. After his death, she lived in York, where she was a resident for 15 years and a member of the York Hospital Auxiliary and St. George's Episcopal Church.

Her hobbies were playing an electronic piano, creating crewel work, and enameling on copper. She made jewelry and decorative dishes. In her 70s, she made several trips to Europe.

Surviving is her daughter, Beverly Hallam of York, an artist.

MURPHY - Alice L. Murphy, 99, of Sentry Hill, York, Maine, died June 3, 2001. A private graveside service will be held at Pine Grove Cemetery in Lynn, Mass. Donations may be sent in her memory to York Hospital Cardiology, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909. The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is in charge of arrangements.

Barbara G. Reed

STONINGTON, Maine - Barbara G. Reed, 66, of Green Head Lane, formerly of Newfields, N.H., died Sunday, June 3, 2001.

Born May 8, 1935, in Bluehill, Maine, she was the daughter of Howard and Regina Guptill.

She graduated with a degree in nursing from the University of Maine in Orono. She had a career in nursing as a registered nurse, administrator and director of nursing.

She and her husband Barry retired in Stonington, where they started a wonderful business in plants, herbs, jams, jellies and pickles.

Survivors include her husband of 43 years, Maj. Ralph Barry Reed; three children, Barry Michael of Stratham, N.H., Julie Reed Dunfey of Rye, N.H., and Nancy Reed O'Shea of Kittery Point; five grandchildren, Benjamin, Raphael, Donald, Walter and Liam.

She will be greatly missed by all, including her beloved dog, Molly.

REED - Barbara G. Reed, 66, of Greenhead Lane, Stonington, Maine, formerly of Newfields, N.H., died June 3, 2001. A memorial service will be held at Bragdon Funeral Home, Stonington, on Wednesday at 3 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Burial will be private. If desired, donations in her memory may be made to Breast Cancer Research, Norris Cotton Medical Center, Dartmouth Hitchcock, Hanover, NH 03755.

Eleanor M. Moore

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Eleanor Marie Moore, 92, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, June 3, 2001.

She died in Chattanooga, where she had been living with her daughter for the past five years. Previously she was a resident of York, Maine, for more than 50 years and a member of the York Street Baptist Church for more than 50 years.

Born on July 26, 1908, in Portland, Maine, she was the daughter of William A. and Marie C. Jensen. She was a 1927 graduate of South Portland High School and a 1929 graduate of the Maine School of Commerce.

She was the widow of J. Philip Moore, who died in 1988.

Survivors include a son, Robert W. Moore of Durham, Maine; one daughter, Mrs. William (Phyllis) Eaton of Hixson; one sister, Ethel V. Johnson of Miami, Fla.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

MOORE - Eleanor M. Moore, 92, formerly of York, Maine, widow of J. Philip Moore, died June 3, 2001, in Chattanooga, Tenn. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday in the York Street Baptist Church, York. If desired, donations in her memory may be made to the York Street Baptist Church Missions Fund, 61 York St., York, ME 03909. Arrangements by the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Chester A. Boyce

DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Fla. - Chester A. "Chet" Boyce, 70, of 2967 South Atlantic Ave., No. 1503, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, in Spokane, Wash., while visiting family.

Born in Eliot, Maine, he moved to central Florida in 1969. Up until his passing, he was a certified general contractor and owner of Boyce Construction Corp., and a licensed real estate broker and owner of Boyce Realty & Management.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of New Smyrna Beach; Bahia Temple and Scottish Rite of Orlando; Elk's Lodge of New Smyrna Beach; Blue Lodge of Kittery, Maine; and the Homebuilder's Association of Volusia County.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley J. Boyce; a son, Michael C. Boyce of Orlando; daughters, Jacqueline B. Mellor and Jeanne Boyce-Taylor, both of Longwood, and Debra H. Boyce of St. Petersburg; grandsons, Brandon Mellor, Cameron Mellor and Dylan Mellor, all of Longwood; sisters, Eleanor Lunn of Cloverdale, Ore., and Helen Shilko of Eliot, Maine.

A memorial service will be held in Eliot at a later date.

Ruth Daley

NEWFIELDS - Ruth "Tony" (White) Daley, 87, of Piscassic Road, died on Monday, June 4, 2001, at the Exeter Hospital after a period of failing health.

Born March 7, 1914, in Newark, N.J., the daughter of James and Etta White, she had lived in Newfields for many years.

She was a graduate of Plymouth State College and studied music at Yale Summer School. For many years she taught elementary school in Old Saybrook, Conn.; Fremont, Kingston and at Pease Air Base.

"Tony" loved her cats, playing the piano, and her flower garden.

In 1980, her husband, John J. Daley Sr., died.

Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Cora Daley of Newfields; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

DALEY - Ruth "Tony" (White) Daley, 87, of Piscassic Road in Newfields, died June 4, 2001. A visiting hour will be held on Thursday from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket, followed by a 3 p.m. funeral service with the Rev. Robert Collinge officiating. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, 9 Cedarwood Drive, Unit 12, Bedford, NH 03110; or make a donation to a scholarship to help further someone's education.

Jonathan Sawyer III

KITTERY POINT, Maine - Jonathan Sawyer III, 79, of 110 Bartlett Road, died Monday, June 4, 2001, at his residence after a long illness.

Born in York on June 1, 1922, he was the son of Jonathan and Esther (Tuttle) Sawyer. He was a 1941 graduate of York High School and attended the University of New Hampshire.

He served as an aviation machinist in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was a self-employed building contractor and lived on his family farm for his whole life. He was a member of the Federal Fire Society and the Society of Cincinnati.

Survivors include one brother, William Sawyer of Wellesley, Mass.; two sisters, Lydia S. Coggeshall of Portsmouth, N.H., and Elizabeth S. Hoefler of Kittery Point and Sugarloaf USA; eight nieces and nephews; and 11 great-nieces and great-nephews.

SAWYER - Jonathan Sawyer III, 79, of 110 Bartlett Road, Kittery Point, Maine, died June 4, 2001, at his residence. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, in Pine Hill Cemetery, 35 South Pine St., Dover, N.H. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either York Hospital, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909; or to the Visiting Nurse Service, 42 Brickyard Court, York, ME 03909. Arrangements by the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Charlotte W. Williams

RYE - Funeral services for Mrs. Charlotte W. (Miller) Williams, 89, of 1240 Ocean Blvd., were held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Tuesday. The Rev. Vivan Martindale, pastor of the Middle Street Baptist Church, officiated. In attendance were members of the church.

Burial was in Central Cemetery, Rye, with committal services by the Rev. Martindale. Bearers were Jay Dodge, Jeffers Dodge, Chester Englander, Chip Englander, James Oliver, Richard Miller, Robert Burns and Michael Burns.

Orintha M. Chick

PORTSMOUTH - Orintha M. "Rinkey" Chick, 98, of Rogers Street, died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at the Mark H. Wentworth Home in Portsmouth.

She was the daughter of Harry and Meda Chick and was born Feb. 21, 1903, in the family home on Porter Street. In 1920, her family moved to Rogers Street and she lived there until April of this year.

Orintha graduated from Portsmouth High School, Class of 1921, and soon started working for the telephone company, became a supervisor and retired in 1965.

She was a member of the North Congregational Church where she was a volunteer in the Nearly New Shop; a life member of the Daughters of The American Revolution; was active in the Women's City Club and the Garden Club; member of the Bridget Graffort Club; and was a volunteer at Strawbery Banke.

Her quick wit, kindness, and positive attitude brought joy and happiness to all who knew her.

Survivors include her brother, Winfield H. Chick Jr. of Portsmouth

CHICK - Orintha M. "Rinkey" Chick, 98, of Rogers Street, Portsmouth, died June 5, 2001. A funeral service will be held at the North Congregational Church, Market Square, Portsmouth, Friday at 1 p.m. Friends invited. No visiting hours. Please omit flowers. Donations in her memory may be made to Make-A-Wish Foundation of N.H., 1492 Elm St., Suite 1, Manchester, NH 03101-1348. Arrangements by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel.
