Michael "JJ" Johnston

MORRISTOWN — Michael "JJ" Johnston, 37, formerly of Jefferson, passed away on Saturday, March 1, 2008.

He was born in Morristown to Nancy Hamilton Johnston and John Johnston Sr. Mr. Johnston was a 1989 graduate of Jefferson Township High School. He attended Salisbury State University, where he received a bachelor of arts degree in sociology in 1993. He grew flowers and native plants in Wisconsin, Oregon and North Carolina.

He was employed at Den Hollander Nurseries in Lincoln Park and most recently at Plainview Growers in Pompton Plains. Mr. Johnston will be best remembered for his love of hiking and being outdoors.

Mr. Johnston is survived by his loving parents, Nancy and John Johnston Sr. of Lake Shawnee, Jefferson; his dear brothers, John Johnston Jr. of Stanhope and Timothy Johnston and his wife, Patricia, of Austin, Texas; and his beloved niece, Rocio Johnston, also of Austin. Mr. Johnston leaves behind his loving companion, Buck, as well as many family and friends.

Friends may call today, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at Goble Funeral Home, 22 Main St., Sparta. The funeral will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Sparta cemetery.

Anne G. Autera Kuhn

WAYNE — Anne G. Autera Kuhn, 83, died peacefully at home on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008. She was surrounded by her family and dear friends.

Born in Prospect Park, she lived in the Hillcrest section of Paterson before moving to Wayne in 1957. She was a social worker for Project Linc of Catholic Family and Community Services, a member of the Mayor's Senior Advisory Board in Wayne, an avid card player and a devout member of Annunciation R.C. Church in Wayne.

Her husband, Cornelius, died in 2002.

Mrs. Kuhn is survived by two daughters, Barbara Kuhn of Wayne and Claudia Chase and her husband, Kevin, of Vernon; two grandchildren, Brian and Stephanie Chase, also of Vernon; her sister, Laura LaRosa of Riverdale; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were by the Vander May Wayne Colonial Funeral Home, 567 Ratzer Road, Wayne.

Those planning an expression of sympathy in Anne's name are asked to consider Passaic Valley Hospice, 783 N. Riverview Drive, Totowa, NJ 07512.

Helen Ann Ross

EQUINUNK, Pa. — Helen Ann Ross, 77, formerly of Milton, died Sunday, March 2, 2008, at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale.

Mrs. Ross was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and lived in Milton many years before moving to Equinunk in 1976. She worked for New York Bell Telephone in Brooklyn as a repair clerk and at the Variety Store in Milton for many years. Most recently, Mrs. Ross worked as a security guard and also as a switchboard operator for the Delaware Valley Job Corps in Callicoon, N.Y.

She was predeceased by her parents, Henry and Katie Metzler, and by her devoted son, Ernest Ross II.

Mrs. Ross is survived by her beloved husband, Ernest Elwood Ross; her son, Henry C. Ross, and his companion, Gertrude Gager; daughter-in-law, Sandra Ross, and former daughter-in-law, Dawn Ross; loving grandchildren, Christopher Ross and his wife, Erica, Shannon Ross-Boudwin and her husband, Dale, Jessica Kenyon and her husband, Andrew, Casey Ross, Emmy Lou Ross, Kimberly Ross, Daniel Ross, Garrett Ross and Kyal Ross; she also is survived by great-grandchildren, Brooke Boudwin, Krissy, Alyssa and Gage Ross and Andrew Kenyon; her cousin, Hilda Dinger; sisters-in-law, Raina and her husband, George Bauchman, and Lana and her husband, Clarence Gletow, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Friday, at 10:30 a.m., at Goble Funeral Home, 22 Main St., Sparta. Burial will follow at Holland Mountain cemetery. Friends may call Thursday, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Emma Hickey Smith

RALEIGH, N.C. — Emma Hickey Smith, 83, born to Elizabeth and William Hickey, passed away on March 3, 2008.

She was a devoted mother who lived for her children. She was retired from West Milford Township after more than 30 years as a switchboard operator.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years, Harold Joseph Smith Sr.; two sons, Garry and Charles Smith; one brother, William Hickey; and two sisters, Marie Clark and Lucy Hickey.

Mrs. Smith is survived by two sons, Harold Smith Jr. of Pennsylvania and Larry Smith of Franklin; three daughters, Emma Jean Hilbert of Franklin, and Helen Jones and Cathy Marion, both of Raleigh; and her sister, Elizabeth Smith of Franklin. She was blessed with nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, today, between 6 and 8 p.m. A graveside service will be held at Newfoundland Methodist cemetery, Route 23, Newfoundland, N.J., on Saturday, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Ed Casey officiating.

Richard L. Snyder

DUNNELLON, Fla. — Richard L. Snyder, 70, passed away unexpectedly Monday, March 3, 2008, at Newton Memorial Hospital, Newton.

Mr. Snyder was born in Morris Plains. He had been a resident of Dunnellon since 2003. He moved there from Dingmans Ferry, Pa. and, prior to that, he resided in Lake Hiawatha. He worked as an auto parts salesman at Clinton Square Auto Parts, Morristown, retiring in 1988 after 35 years. He also worked for Delaware Auto Parts in Dingmans Ferry, Pa. He loved bowling and golf.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Margaret Hendershot Snyder; his four sons, Mark E. of Tobyhanna, Pa., Scott A. of Green, Richard M. of Boonton and Russell L. of Moscow, Pa.; two daughters, Crystal L. Pierce and Kathleen J. Snyder, both of Fredon; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at Tuttle Funeral Home, 272 Route 10, Randolph, on Friday, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral will be held at 8:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Carol G. Simon Cancer Center, 100 Madison Ave., Box 110, Morristown, NJ 07962.

Amanda Aumick Hoffacker

WOODSTOCK, GA. — Amanda Aumick Hoffacker, 33, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007. She was a member of the Mountain View United Methodist Church in Marietta.

Mrs. Hoffacker's survivors include her husband, Mark A. Hoffacker; her parents, Charles and Caroline Aumick, and her brother, Charles Gregory Aumick, all of Woodstock, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

The family will receive friends at the memorial service on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007 at Butler United Methodist Church, Butler, N.J., with the Rev. Steven Bechtold officiating. The Woodstock Funeral Home in Woodstock is in charge of funeral arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Alliance for Lupus Research, 28 West 44th St., Suite 501, New York, N.Y. 10036.

Rosemary McEntee Nestor

WANTAGE — Rosemary McEntee Nestor, 89, died at her daughter's home in Elmwood Park on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2007, after a short illness. Born to Raymond and Margaret McEntee in Franklin, she lived there until 1963, and lived in Vernon for 30 years before moving to Wantage in 1993.

Her husband, Edwin F. Nestor, died in 1991.

She was the devoted mother of William C. Nestor and his wife, Lori, of Wantage, Edwin F. Nestor Jr. of Orlando, Fla., Margaret Howard and her husband, Bruce, of Elmwood Park and Barbara Parsons and her husband, James, of Lexington, Ky. She was cherished by seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007 at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas of Aquin R.C. Church in Ogdensburg. Burial of cremains will follow in the church cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the care of FERGUSON - VERNON Funeral Home, 241 Route 94, Vernon.

Memorial gifts to the Church of St. Anne's Prayer Shawl Ministry, 15-05 St. Anne St., Fair Lawn, N.J. 07410 or a favorite charity would be appreciated.

Philip A. Nick

SUSSEX — Philip A. Nick, 57, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007 at the Bergen Regional Hospital in Paramus.

Born in Oil City, Pa., Mr. Nick was employed by Crews-Farrell-Mead Co. Inc. in Wayne.

He is survived by his sons, Robert and Andrew; his daughters, Rebecca Lockburner, Debra Babb and Pamela Conklin; several brothers and sisters; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be celebrated at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Baleville Congregational Christian Church, 6 Church Road, Hampton. Cremation was private. The M. John Scanlan Funeral Home in Pompton Plains is in charge of arrangements.

Carol J. Anthony

YORK, PA. — Carol J. Anthony, 56, formerly of Sussex, died suddenly on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2007 at York Hospital. She was the wife of Mark R. Anthony, formerly of Sussex.

Mrs. Anthony was born on Feb. 27, 1951 in Sussex. She was the daughter of the late Arlie and Albert Brink. She was a graduate of Sussex County Vocational Technical School. She retired in January of 2007 from The Sussex County Homestead, after 25 years of dedicated service as a Certified Senior Nurse's Aid.

In addition to her husband, Carol is survived by two children, Fred Lauster III and his wife, Jill, of Wilson, N.C. and Arlie Jager and her husband, Jeff, of York, Pa.; two brothers, William Leek of Sussex and Glendon Brink of Newton; one sister, Barbara Miller, of Mecca Lake; and five grandchildren.

Services were held on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2007 at the Ferguson Funeral Home in Sussex.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to The Sussex County Homestead, 129 Morris Turnpike, Newton NJ 07860

Linda M. DiCiccio

Linda M. DiCiccio, 59, of Andover Township, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007, at St. Clares Hospital in Denville following a long illness.

Born in East Orange, Mrs. DiCiccio grew up in West New York then moved to Sussex County in 1973. She was a teacher for many years; as well as a homemaker.

The daughter of the late Thomas and Mary B. Strada French, Mrs. DiCiccio is survived by her husband, Michael DiCiccio; one son, Dean DiCiccio and his wife, Tina, of Andover; and one grand-dog, Frankie.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. in the Chapel of the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veteran's cemetery in Wrightstown followed by interment. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High Street, Newton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice, 99 Sparta Avenue, Newton NJ 07860.

John M. Hill

VALLEY FALLS, N.Y. — John Murdock Hill, 91, a long-time resident of State Street, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2007 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center Hospital in Bennington following a long illness.

Born in Troy, N.Y. on Jan. 8, 1916, Mr. Hill was the son of John and Annie Murdock Hill and the husband for 66 years of Flora E. Sproat Hill, who predeceased him in 2005.

Mr. Hill was a graduate of Hoosick Falls High School, Class of 1935.

As a young man he was employed locally for several years as a salesman of highway equipment and aggregate materials by the Midland Asphalt Corporation of Buffalo, N.Y. Shortly after marrying in August of 1938 he was promoted to the position of production supervisor managing Midland's business activities in the Troy area.

On May 8, 1945, he was inducted into the United States Marine Corps and was a veteran of World War II. Following basic training, he earned the rank of Private First Class and was awarded the expert marksman with rifle ribbon. He was honorably discharged on November of 1945 at the conclusion of the war.

After the service, he continued to work for the Midland Corporation for several years. In 1957, he founded the Hoosick Valley Asphalt Company in Valley Falls. As president and owner for over 21 years, he partnered with his late wife and worked until the company was purchased by the Peckham Corporation. He retired in June of 1978.

Following retirement, from 1978 until 1994, Mr. Hill and his wife spent their winters in Cape Coral, Fla. and returned each spring to catch up with his life in Valley Falls. There he was active in the arts and was the president of the Cape Coral Art League.

He was a member of the Valley Falls United Methodist Church, a member and past master of the Victor Masonic Lodge No. 680 in Schaghticoke, N.Y., a member of the Oriental Temple Shrine of Troy, a member and past commander of both the American Legion Post No. 731 in Schaghticoke and the Rensselaer County American Legion Post. He was actively involved in United States Veteran's Affairs and was the former superintendent of Veteran's Burials in Rennselaer County. As a young man, he was a member of the Brocket's Lumberjack's Semi Pro baseball team in Johnsonville, N.Y. He also helped to start and was a former Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop No. 49 in Valley Falls.

In his quiet time, he enjoyed art and music. He also enjoyed visiting with friends at the weekly meeting of the Rensselaer County Indoor Bird Watcher's Society.

Mr. Hill is survived by his five children and their spouses, John "Jack" C. Hill Sr. and his wife, Susan, of Valley Falls, Carolyn Ann Collette and her husband, Dennis, of Newton, Andrew M. Hill Sr. and his wife, Alice, of Schaghticoke, Elizabeth T. Ricupero and her husband, Frank, of Conway, S.C. and Ina Mari Larson and her husband, James, of Spokane, Wash.; a brother-in-law, James Kessler of California; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and four sisters, Mary Bartholomew, Rheba Banks-Collins, Ina McCue-White and Elizabeth Kessler.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007 at 11 a.m. at the Valley Falls United Methodist Church at 16 State Street, on Route 117, in Valley Falls with the Rev. Eileen Deming officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot located at Elmwood cemetery in Schagticoke. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the church from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 22, 2007.

At the request of the family, memorial contributions may be made to either the Valley Falls Untied Methodist Church, P.O. Box 236, Valley Falls, NY 12185 or to the Hoosick Falls Health Center, P.O. Box 100 Danforth Street, Hoosick Falls, NY 12090, in memory of Mr. Hill.

Funeral service details are under the direction of the Howard B. Tate & Son Funeral Home Inc., 2237 NY Route 7, located in Ramertown, N.Y.
