Tony Marks
Tony Marks passed away at his home on Feb. 28, 2004, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on Oct. 16, 1918, in Murray, Utah, to John and Josephine Marks. He moved as a child with his family to North Hollywood, Calif. He married Dolores Jesson on Oct. 21, 1939. In 1940, they opened a successful automotive business which they ran until they decided to move to Elko, Nev., in 1957.
Tony worked at the Nevada Department of Transportation shop in Elko. He took over as superintendent of the shop in 1968 and held that position until his retirement in 1978.
After retiring, he and Dolores enjoyed traveling, helping family and friends and spending time with his grandchildren. Tony was an avid outdoorsman enjoying camping, hunting and fishing with his wife, daughter and grandchildren.
Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years; son, Ronald of Elko; daughters, Toni (Raymond) Mendive of Elko and Donna of Oregon; grandchildren, Antonio Mendive, Elko, Marlina (Mark) Jones, Elko, Vince (Noel), Spring Creek, Phillip (Glenda), Gardnerville, Nev., Shauna (Don) Thomas, Fallon, Jay Marks, Elko, Shawn and Heather Combs; great-grandchildren, Nancy (Clyde) Vega, Hillary Mendive, Jessica, Tana, Shelbi and Casey Jones, Mary (Devon) Castle, Ashlee, Dillon and Kirk Mendive, Alixandra and Dalton Mendive, AJ and Gabby Vega. He is also survived by brother-in-law, Richard (Bev) Jesson and a sister, Florence Kruska.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 5, at Burns Funeral Home.

Cleveland E. 'Gene' Carpenter
In loving memory of Cleveland E. "Gene" Carpenter, a loving husband, devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, loyal friend and brother, who passed away Friday, March 5, 2004, at the age of 71.
He was born Jan. 30, 1933, in Amelia, Neb., a son of Audrey and Elliot E. Carpenter. Gene married Tamara Olson Rudd on Sept. 16,1959.
He was a man of honor who loved the out of doors, fishing and hunting. He was especially fond of his children, grandchildren and his great-grandchildren.
Gene was a hard worker and took pride in the work he did. He started working at a very young age, 10, to help his mother support the family. At the age of 14 he started driving truck with his older brother which he did until he joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Alaska where he worked on the B-52s. He was a long-standing member of the Teamsters for 30 years, he drove across the country for Garrett Freightlines for 28 years. He was a 32nd degree mason and a member of the York Rite Shriners, also a past master.
He is survived by his wife, Tammy of Elko; sons, Calvin (Sandy) of Reno, and Richard of Las Vegas; daughters, Donna Carpenter of Reno, and Barbara (Ron) Palmer of Elko; grandchildren, Tammy Carpenter, Tiffany (Mike) Sessions, Wes (Stephanie) Palmer, Anita (Fabian) Valdez, Kathryn (Salvador) Bravo, Darrell (Christy) Palmer, Jessica Palmer, Kristen Palmer; great-grandchildren, Derrick, Brandie, Austin, Colby Palmer, Chelsea, Kimberly, Shawn Sessions, Alexandra, Marrisa and Ashton Valdez; sisters, Irene of St. Louis, Mo., Vivian J. Nixon of St. Petersburg, Fla., Sherry (Jim) Friedhoff of Las Cruses, N.M.; brothers, Robert (Kathy) of Las Cruses, N.M., Rex (Joni) of Grand Island, Neb., Dennis (Maureen) of Lincoln, Neb.; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Audrey and Elliot Carpenter; brother, Cecil; sisters, Elayne Gould and Twila Dion Nissen; and great-grandson, Christopher Sessions.
Dad, may you find peace and happiness until we all meet again.
We will miss you deeply but your life's impressions will be forever in our hearts and on our minds.
Viewing will be held at Burns Funeral Home on Friday, March 12, 2004, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Services will be held at the LDS Chapel, 3001 N. Fifth St., on Saturday, March 13, 2004, at 1 p.m. with Bishop Steve Garcia of Elko Second Ward LDS Church conducting the service. Cremation will follow the viewing.

LeRoy George 'Rusty' Bitton
LeRoy George "Rusty" Bitton, 79, died Sunday, March 7, 2004, following an extended illness.
Rusty was born Oct. 13, 1924, in West Weber, Utah, the youngest child of George James Bitton and Laura Hogge Agnes Bitton. He was raised and educated in Ogden, Utah, graduating from Weber High School. On Jan. 2, 1943, he wed Beverley Layne. They were later divorced. On June 18, 1949, he wed Dorcas Hunter, deceased July 13, 1985. On Feb. 14, 1992, he wed Sandy Bartolo.
Rusty served his country as a member of the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad for 47 years, retiring as a conductor in October 1987. Rusty enjoyed hunting, fishing and was an avid golfer.
Surviving are his wife, Sandy, of Elko, Nev.; two sons and two daughters, Larry Kapp, Lee (Barbara) Bitton of Elko, Lana Hertzke, Washington, D.C., and Sherrie Liggett, Ogden, Utah; and 13 loving grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Melba (Jordan) Williams, Ogden, Utah.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Dorcas; parents; brothers, Wallace and Lewis; and sisters, Wanda, Louise, Manell and Phyllis.
Cremation will be handled through Burns Funeral Home in Elko, Nev. In honor of Rusty's wishes no services will be held.

Joyce (Shangle) Goicoechea
Joyce D. Goicoechea, 73 died Monday, March 8, 2004, at the Syringa Chalet Nursing Home in Blackfoot, Idaho.
Joyce was born on June 17, 1930, at Buhl, Idaho, the daughter of Wilbur "Buck" and Vernonia Darling Shangle. Joyce's younger years were spent with her family, residing on ranches in northern Nevada, Idaho, and California.
In 1945, her family moved to the Goicoechea family ranch near Eureka, Nev., where Joyce met her future husband Benny Goicoechea. On Feb. 14, 1948, Joyce and Ben were married in St. Maries, Idaho. They would spend the next two decades together, residing in Benewah County where they would raise their four children at their home near Emida, Idaho.
Joyce was a patient, loving and devoted mother. She enjoyed reading, sewing, cooking and country living, but most of all she loved spending time with her children. Joyce truly enjoyed those years while surrounded by family and dear friends.
Joyce's husband, Ben, preceded her in death on Nov. 26, 1967. Shortly thereafter, Joyce moved to Lewiston, Idaho, where she resided for the next decade. In 1981, Joyce moved to southern Idaho to be near family. She spent the remainder of her life living in southern Idaho near family and friends.
Joyce's greatest love in life was her children and family. She leaves behind three sons, Perry (Linette) Goicoechea of Garden Valley, Idaho, Wade Goicoechea of Moses Lake, Wash., and Jim Goicoechea of Elko, Nev.; a daughter, Vicki Goicoechea of Elko, Nev.; two beloved brothers, Monte (Joan) Shangle of Eureka, Nev., and Dusty Shangle of Desert Hot Springs, Calif.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her father, Buck, in 1983, and her mother, Nonie, in 1998.
A memorial service and inurnment will be held at a later date at the Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries, Idaho. Arrangements are under the direction of Grove City Funeral Home in Blackfoot, Idaho.
