Lee L. Waite

EDMESTON — Lee L. Waite, 70, of Edmeston, passed away Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at his home in Edmeston.

He was born April 10, 1933, in Pittsfield, the son of Arthur and Ethel (Patrick) Waite.

He married Avis Stephens on Sept. 19, 1959.

Lee was a dairy farmer and cattle hauler. He had a love of horses especially draft, and enjoyed watching horse shows, pulls, etc.

Lee served as a director of the Otsego County Fair for more than 30 years and was later made honorary director.

Lee was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Edmeston and the Wharton Valley Grange.

Lee also instilled strong moral values to his offspring; with the help of his wife, Avis, they provided a homestead of love. Lee's grandchildren provided him with the special joy of spoiling and then sending them home to their parents.

He will be remembered by many for his smile, his humor and his steadfastness through the many trials of his life.

Lee is survived by his wife of 43 years, Avis; his children and their spouses, Ethel and Robin Diehl, Barb and Rick Bateman, Lauren and Tammy Waite, James and Brenda Waite and Melanie Burchill; his eight grandchildren, Preston, Darcy, Lance, Sabrina, Hannah, Bryden, Taylor and Josie; and one great-grandchild, Brooke; his brothers, Earl Waite of East Syracuse, and Roger Waite of Evansville, Ind.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

A reception in memory of Lee will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, at the Edmeston Fire House, Edmeston. Luncheon to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lee's memory to either the Second Baptist Church, 7 North St., Edmeston or the Edmeston Emergency Squad. Envelopes will be available at the firehouse.

Sophie Schraft

BATON ROUGE, La. — Sophie Schraft of Baton Rouge, and formerly of Oneonta, died Sept. 14, 2003, in Baton Rouge.

She was born on Sept. 29, 1907, in Johnstown, Pa., to Frank and Mary Gorence Kovacic.

She married William Schraft in 1926 in Cooperstown. He preceded her in death in February 1951.

Sophie was a homemaker and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Oneonta. She was also a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW of Oneonta.

Sophie loved to travel and had been to all the states, Mexico and many areas of Canada. She did much of her traveling with her twin sister, Marie, driving and also by bus and train. Her other hobby was crocheting and many family members have an afghan that she lovingly made for them.

Sophie is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, William H. and Linda Schraft of Otego; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and James Murray of Baton Rouge, and Frieda and Joe Rexford of Kingman, Ariz.; twin sister, Marie Kodrich of Annandale, Va., sister Louise Teal of Albany; brothers Robert and wife, Evelyn, Kovacic of Oneonta and Joseph and wife, Margaret, Kovacic of Cooperstown; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother Frank Kovacic.

Calling hours with the family will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, with Father Paul Roman officiating. Burial will follow in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made in Sophie's honor to St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Helen McIntyre

RICHMONDVILLE — Mrs. Helen McIntyre, 81, formerly of Richmondville, died Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at Eden Park Health Care Center in Cobleskill.

Mrs. McIntyre was born June 4, 1922, in Jefferson, the daughter of William and Maria (Mach) Suchy.

Mrs. McIntyre was a homemaker during her married life.

She was predeceased by her husband, John McIntyre. He died Oct. 5, 2001. They were married April 13, 1947.

Survivors include two daughters, Joanne Hornauer of Venice, Fla., and Blanche Waters of Richmondville; two sons, John C. McIntyre and William S. McIntyre, both of Yucalpa, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 22, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill. Officiating will be the Rev. Marvin Batcher of the United Methodist Church of Richmondville. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, prior to the service. Burial will be in Charlotteville Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 327 West Main St., Suite 3, Cobleskill, NY 12043 or the Alzheimer's Association Capital District Chapter, 85 Watervliet Ave., Albany, NY 12206-2083.

Mildred B. Sperling

HALCOTTSVILLE — Mildred B. Sperling, 95, died Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at her residence.

She was born Nov. 8, 1907, in Roxbury, the daughter of LeGrand and Elizabeth (Cartwright) Bouton.

She married Robert S. Sperling on Sept. 24, 1930, in Montreal, Canada. He died May 6, 1952.

Mildred operated a dress shop in Kelly Corners. She also had worked as a postal clerk for the Margaretville Post Office and was a manager at the Margaretville Department Store. She lived in Halcottsville since 1944.

She was a member of the Halcottsville Methodist Church, charter member of Daughters of Union Veterans, Arkville Rebekah Lodge, Avon salesperson for more than 35 years, Democratic election inspector in the town of Middletown for 50 years.

Mildred is survived by two nieces, Ruth Carmeli and Mary Brien; three nephews, Donald Bouton, Richard Bouton and John Bouton; and several grand and great-nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by four sisters, Hazel McCall, Fannie Bouton, Pauline Case and Mary Bouton; three brothers, George Bouton, Corbin Bouton and Harold Bouton Sr.; six nephews, James M. Bouton Jr., Frank Bouton, Glenford Bouton, Gerald McCall, Lee McCall and Harold Bouton Jr.; and three nieces, Margaret Haas, Dawn Palmquist and Virginia Marquit.

Calling hours will be 10 a.m. until the funeral service at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. Bill Hawes, officiating.

Burial will be in Andes Cemetery, Andes.

Donations in memory of Mildred B. Sperling may be made to American Heart Association, the United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice.

Arrangements are by the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Elizabeth Caulkins

FLY CREEK — Mrs. Elizabeth Caulkins, 89, formerly of Fly Creek, entered into eternal life early Wednesday morning, Sept. 17, 2003, at The Meadows.

She was born on Oct. 19, 1913, in Fly Creek Valley, a daughter of Jacob and Frances (Cepudar) Hribar.

She was married to Howard M. Caulkins on Aug. 10, 1935, in Jordanville. They were married for 61 years until his passing on March 26, 1997.

Raised in Fly Creek Valley, Liz attended the Twelve Thousand School. During the war years, she was employed from 1943 to 1945, at the Mica Plant in Oneonta, and from 1945 until 1948, at Donlon's Glove Factory in Cooperstown. For one year, she was employed at the Cooperstown T-Shirt Factory and then was employed for 11 years at Hill's Department Store. For the next 15 years, she was employed as a clerk at J.J. Newberrys before entering into retirement.

A particular love of Liz's was her rose garden and her flower gardens that she tended to while she and her husband, Howard, lived at Grassland's Farm owned by the Clark family of Cooperstown.

In her younger days, Liz kept accurate diaries of the happenings of the Clark Farms, including employee and family get-togethers. An avid amateur photographer, her family will continue to enjoy her photos and her diaries as a legacy that she has left behind.

She embraced life, found beauty in every day and saw the good in everyone. She especially loved watching the birds at their feeders and seeing the beauty in all flowers.

She was a member of the Fly Creek United Methodist Church and, at one time, was a member of the Double X Club.

Liz was happiest when she was surrounded by her nieces and nephews, great-nieces and -nephews, and great-grandnieces and -grandnephews.

Five years ago Liz came to reside with her niece and husband, and became a very important part of the Eleanor and Ronald Vibbard family of Edmeston. She always loved the children and they her, as she greatly enjoyed their antics and liveliness.

Liz is also survived by one sister-in-law, Pauline Hribar of Allentown, Pa.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, in the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, with Thomas E. Pullyblank, pastor, officiating. The Service of Committal and Burial will follow in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.

Friends may call at the church from 1 p.m. until service time, when Mrs. Caulkins family will be in attendance.

Elizabeth's entire family will always remember their gentle, kind and caring Aunt Liz.

In lieu of flowers, do a kind deed for someone in her memory.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Pongracz Grusovnik

ROSEBOOM — Pongracz Grusovnik Jr., 92, passed away Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at his home.

He was born Feb. 16, 1911, in Gordon, Colo., the son of Pongracz and Frances (Mlekus) Grusovnik Sr.

He worked in the maintenance department of the New York State Department of Conservation in Oneonta for 38 years.

He was a member of SNPJ, the NRA (National Rifle Association), the Slovene National Benefit Society, a tree farmer for many years, American Agriculturist for many years, N.Y.S. Conservationists, and bee keeper.

Survivors include a sister, Mary Grusovnik of Roseboom; friends, Mr. Wes Nelson and family of Roseboom, Mr. Dan Kiesow of Cherry Valley, Mr. Wendell Whiteman of Roseboom, Mr. Grant Campbell of Troy; and a close friend, Ms. Betty Semrov of Roseboom.

He was predeceased by a brother, Joe Grusovnik, and sisters, Ann Grusovnik and Gail Anteman.

Arrangements will be private at the convenience of the family.

Contributions in Mr. Grusovnik's memory may be made to the N.Y.S. Department of Conservation Memorial Wildlife Program, Wolf Road, Albany, N.Y.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Shirley C. Fowler

OCALA, Fla. — Due to the threat of inclement weather, services for Shirley C. Fowler, have been moved.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 19, 2003, at the First Baptist Church of Cooperstown, with the Rev. Douglas Deer, pastor, officiating. Burial will be private at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Frances K. Dorst

DELHI — Frances K. Dorst, 78, of Catskill Turnpike Road, Delhi, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003, in Old Forge.

She was born March 25, 1925, the daughter of Walter and Caroline (Walk) Lang.

She married George Dorst on Aug. 3, 1946, in Brooklyn. He predeceased her on Nov. 2, 1991.

Frances and George were former residents of Uniondale, Long Island, moving to the Catskill Turnpike Road in 1986.

She spent her lifetime in service within the Lutheran Church as Sunday School Teacher, Youth Leader and in her retirement as Deacon at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Delhi. She was also a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

She worked in banking on Wall Street as well as in retail for Federated Stores.

She was predeceased by her son, Richard E. Dorst on Nov. 29, 1967, as well as her husband, George.

She is survived by a daughter, Susanna M. Kenefick and her husband, William J. Kenefick of Old Forge; a grandson, Brian R. Coppersmith of Wappingers Falls; a granddaughter, Kathleen S. Coppersmith of Wappingers Falls; a brother, Karl Lang and his wife, Mary Ann of East Meadows; sister-in-law, Sheila Lang of Caswell Beach, N.C.; brother-in-law, David Mansheffer of Meredith Square; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Andes Road, Delhi, with Pastor John Priest officiating.

Friends and family are invited to call at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi, on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will take place in Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Memorial contributions in Frances' memory can be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Delhi, NY 13753.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.
