Olive Owens (Loll)

COOPERSTOWN — Loll was Welsh. Loll went into the arms of her Lord on Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003. The ravages of Alzheimer's Disease took away her reasoning and finally her breathing.

She moved to The Meadows from her family's home in Middlefield Center. The entire staff of The Meadows is to be honored for the care and concern they showed to her and her family. In Loll's words they were Angels. Hospice care of Otsego and Hospice of Ohio, are thanked for the daily support they provided to her before being admitted to The Meadows.

Olive Jane Roberts was born Sept. 4, 1918, in Wales. She came to the United States via Canada in 1926, and the family lived in Dickson City and Olyphant, Pa. They were deported once for illegal immigration. They then reentered the USA legally.

Her mother, Edith Roberts, and father, Samuel Roberts, came from different areas of Wales. One was from the North and the other from the South. They had many discussions about the correct pronunciation of words in the Welsh language.

Samuel died from Black Lung Disease. He left Wales, and his job as slate cutter, to make a better life for the family. He worked in the gold mines of Canada, and then the coal mines in Lackawanna County, Pa. He spoke only a few words of English but had a ready smile and quick laugh with all around him.

Edith was renown for her voice. She traveled via boat with the three small children to join Samuel. Edith was a colatura soprano and was asked by the Metropolitan Opera to join them. She stayed home with her family, although once the children were grown she toured with the Welsh Chorus from Scranton. As she aged she became senile and eventually succumbed to the ravages of Alzheimer's Disease.

Loll, as she preferred to be called, had two brothers. Her younger brother, Trem, died from complications of tonsillectomy before he reached majority of 21. Each Saturday he would listen to the opera on the radio broadcast. He sent in a request and it was honored on the day before he died. The entire family was gathered and listened as this amazing feat happened. Their favorite son had his opera on the radio.

Her older brother, John Roberts (known as Jack), was a coal miner in Pennsylvania, until the mines flooded. He then held several different jobs in support of his family. His laughter and ability to tell a joke were legendary. His major joys in life were his son, Ernest (Ernie), and his wife, Katherine (Kitty).

These members of Loll's family have predeceased her.

She became a naturalized citizen upon marriage to Robert Eugene Owens (Bob) and they had a long and happy marriage. They met in high school and according to family friends, he was smitten with her and never looked at another woman. They planned to be married, but were rushed into the wedding, because Bob had gotten a job in Endicott at the IBM plant, and had no one to cook for him. At least that is the story we have all been told. In the earliest years they lived in Endicott and after the war they bought a home in Vestal and moved to 2909 Robins St., Endwell, in May 1953.

Together they taught ballroom dancing for many years. Loll also did full costume hula dancing at area nursing homes. Bob was the sound man and the one who set up all the materials and supplies. Dancing was a passion for them and they made many lifelong friends, some of whom also taught with them including Harold and Nettie Williams and Frank and Lucille Bush.

Loll took up oil painting and exhibited at local craft shows and had a solo exhibition at a bank. Bob set up the stands for the paintings at the shows and always set up the materials and supplies.

A seamstress beyond compare she made all the bedspreads and curtains in their home in Endwell. When she moved out of the home there were 32 pairs of kitchen curtains. She also made many of her dance costumes and ballroom gowns. Bob got to put up all the hardware for the curtains and drapes and move the sewing machine around.

Volunteerism was a way of caring for the world and the people in it. She was a founding member of the Delta Sigma Sorority in Endwell. Through the sorority she became a volunteer at the Binghamton State Hospital where they provided homemade cookies and cakes and beverages along with the bingo games and prizes. She was a Red Cross volunteer for over 32 years. To fund the activities of the sorority the group sold Gertrude Hawks candies for Christmas and Easter. Loll and Bob had a lot of friends and they were always asked to buy candies. Looking back over the candy orders from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s she often sold by herself over $3,000 worth of candy.

Cooking was an interest while baking was truly an art she excelled at. Everyone wanted one of her many cakes, pies, or a batch of cookies. In 1951, she baked Christmas cookies and sold $100 worth, with Peggy, walking door to door in the neighborhood. After a sample everyone ordered cookies. When friends gather, they still rave about her baking.

Her friendships have lasted a lifetime. When she was 8 years old she made a friend of Anne and they remained friends until Anne died. Margie and Loll met when Loll was about 16. When telephones became an everyday occurrence, they spoke at least once a day. Often times twice as Anne and Margie also became friends and the three of them were always looking out for each other.

She was dearly loved by her friends and family and all will miss her.

Loll is survived by a loving and caring family. Magaret Jane Owens (Peggy) lives in Cooperstown, and is married to Earl Thaxton. Earl is an exceptional man who welcomed Loll into his life and his home. He was the primary caregiver for several years. The grandchildren are Owen Robert Thaxton and Maegan Jeanne Thaxton. Her friend and companion, Lisa Thaxton will miss Nana. This family mourns her death and welcomes her being reunited with her loved ones in heaven.

Thomas John Owens (Tom) her son is an accomplished teacher of Karate along with being a rock climber and fly fisherman. He was the apple of her eye and could do no wrong. She was proud of his many accomplishments.

There is to be a service on Monday, Nov. 24, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Tillapaugh Funeral Home, 28 Pioneer St., Cooperstown. Her interment is to take place the same day at 2:30 p.m., Primitive Methodist Cemetery, Dickson City, Pa.

A birthday party, loving memorial service is planned for Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at Peggy and Earl's in their home at The Church in Middlefield Center. Loll chose her friends from her heart and would want them to share her love on this Saturday. There are overnight accommodations for all who are able to come. "Friends are the family we choose." Caregivers from Hospice and The Meadows chose to share their love with Loll and are greatly and wholeheartedly encouraged to attend.

Tom Owens has moved from Unadilla, and cannot be located. If anyone knows of his whereabouts, please contact Peggy. Tom said that he did want to attend the funeral of his mother. Peggy Owens, 3155 County Highway 33, Cooperstown, NY 13326; 547-2762 or 544-1415.

Funeral services are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
