Charles Gardner

SIDNEY — Charles M. Gardner, 70, of Sidney passed away Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, at his home.

He was born April 27, 1933, son of the late Maurice and Marie (Burton) Gardner in Edmeston.

Charles attended and graduated from Hartwick College in 1960. He also served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Charles married Dora Bridger on Feb. 21, 1953, in Cooperstown. She predeceased him after 34 years of marriage. He later married Julia Backus on April 24, 1993, in Afton.

Mr. Gardner was employed by E.C.D. of Bendix in the sales and marketing department for 37 years before retiring.

He is survived by his wife, Julia Gardner, Sidney; 10 children and their spouses, Carol Burton-Holmes, Linda and Jim Corter, Barbara and Jeffrey Doyle, Kirk and Toni Gardner, Beth and David Plummer, Anna Hopkins, David Hopkins, Sandy and Jody Proffitt, Kate and Roger Weber and Joan Wicks; grandchildren, Erica Natoli, Justin Phillips, Elyse and Geoffrey Doyle, Amber Ashley, and Andy Gardner, Christopher and Matthew Plummer, David, Micah, Meghan Hopkins, Stephanie and Natasha Proffitt, Amanda, Jeffrey and Crystal Austin and Luke and Curt Williams; brother, Larry and Leone Gardner; sister, Jean Sanford; special friends, Ruby and Michelle; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was also predeceased by his brother, Maurice Gardner Jr.

Friends may call Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at the funeral chapel at 11 a.m. with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Sidney, officiating.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hanford Mills Museum, PO Box 99, East Meredith, NY 13757.

Charles A. Lathrop

MARYLAND — Charles A. Lathrop passed away quietly at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, on the morning of Jan. 25, 2004, after a short illness.

Charles was born May 5, 1921, to Burton and Nettie Murdoch Lathrop in Hartwick.

Charles spent his childhood as a farm boy in Laurens. After high school he took a job as a machinist with Scintilla in Sidney. He answered his country's call to arms December 1942 to the Army. He was posted to the 9th Airborne Battalion and served in New Guinea and the Pacific as a machine gunner.

He returned home in 1946, and worked for Merville Bell in a grocery wholesale business. Following that, he worked for the D&H Railroad until his retirement.

Charles was an avid fisherman with a love of and a knack for telling a really good story. He had a quiet sense of humor and a hearty chuckle. He was an inveterate sports fan, following the Yankees through thick and thin.

Charles is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ruth (Arbuckle) Lathrop; nieces, Liza and Agnes Cooper; nephew, Marc Cooper and his wife, Nancy, all of Oneonta; grandnieces, Michelle Cooper of Oneonta and Sarah Naumann of Binghamton; grandnephew, Joshua Naumann and wife Alicia; and great-grandniece and great-grandnephew, Aasha and Johnathon Naumann, all of Martinsburg, W.Va.

Calling hours will be at Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. with the family present.

A memorial service will be held at the South Kortright Rest Home, 10800 County Highway 18, on Wednesday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. John Grenier officiating.

Interment will be in the spring in Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs.

Arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Robert A. Burghart

ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. — Robert A. Burghart Sr. of Zephyrhills, Fla., formerly of Walton, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, in Zephyrhills. He was 88.

Mr. Burghart was born in Walton on Dec. 9, 1915, to William and Mary Mae Money Burghart.

Mr. Burghart had his own trucking company in the 1940s; he then bought a dairy farm on Pines Brook that he operated for 25 years. He then worked in the tool room at S.J. Bailey. He also worked on the Pepacton Reservoir, at Scintilla and at the Silkmill and Sheffield Dairy.

Mr. Burghart was a past president of the Dad's Club at the Walton Veterans Club, member of the Eastern Milk Producers and the Apex Sportsman's Club. In Zephyrhills he was a member of St. Elizabeth Episcopal Church and the Elks Club of Zephyrhills.

He will be remembered for his very hard work, many times working more than one job, his honesty, generosity and love for his family.

Mr. Burghart is survived by his wife, Alice, of Zephyrhills; daughter, Janice (Dick) Hoag of Oneonta; four sons, Robert (Rita) of Pella, Iowa, William (Dorothy), Raymond and Roy, all of Walton; three stepchildren, Ardell Brummell, Lalia Pelton and John Ray Carlton; 34 grandchildren; and 47 great-grandchildren.

Family members who died earlier include his first wife, Christina; two grandchildren; and a stepdaughter, Kaylynn Fitzgerald.

A memorial service was held at St. Elizabeth Episcopal Church in Zephyrhills, and a service and burial will take place in Walton in the spring.

Ray E. Jones

EDMESTON — Mr. Ray E. Jones, 63, of Card Road, passed away Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, at M.I. Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

Born March 25, 1940, in Norwich, he was a son of Roger and Maud Leonard Jones, and was a graduate of Sherburne Central School.

Ray worked at a number of occupations, mainly carpentry, and spent quite a few years in Ohio and Virginia. His passion to be a farmer was the reason he returned to New York. His favorite hobbies included bowling and country dancing.

Surviving are his four daughters, Lisa A. Wynn and her fiance, Frank Mazzeo Jr. of Earlville, Julie K. Ouimet of Unadilla, Rae and Jeff Jacklin of Freeville, and Stacey and Jeff Bishop of West Oneonta; two sisters, Martha and Walter Rogers of South Plymouth, and Esther and Thomas White of Albuquerque, N.M.; two brothers, Leonard and Arlene Jones, and G.R. and Judy Jones, all of North Norwich; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a sister, Eleanor Riesen; two nephews, Brian Matteson and Lee Rogers.

Friends are invited to call at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 South Main St., Sherburne on Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, from the North Norwich United Methodist Church. Burial will be private.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Future Farmers of America. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Carl Edward Perry

ORLANDO, Fla. — Carl Edward Perry Jr., 87, of Orlando, Fla., passed away on Jan. 22, 2004, in Orlando.

He was born Dec. 19, 1916, in Fly Creek, to Bernice and Carl Perry Sr.

Mr. Perry was owner and operator of Eastern Drilling Company in Warwick, for more than 40 years. Upon selling his business in 1980, he moved to Milford, and from there he moved to Florida in 1995.

He is survived by his wife, of 56 years, Dorothy, of Orlando, Fla.; his son, Bruce of Leesburg, Fla.; and his daughters, Beth Peacock of Orlando, Fla., and Barbara Milburn of Odessa, Fla. He is also survived by his niece, Charlotte Koniuto of Milford; a nephew, Melvin Perry Jr. of Morris; and other nieces.

There will be a memorial service at St. Luke's Methodist Church in Orlando, Fla. followed by a celebration of his life at a time yet to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Jason Lee Kaiser

STAMFORD — Jason Lee Kaiser, 19, of Stamford died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, of injuries sustained from a motor vehicle accident.

He was born on July 26, 1984, in Poughkeepsie, the son of William Carver Jr. and Florence Kaiser.

Jason received his GED in 2002 from South Kortright Central School.

He was a self-employed carpenter, working throughout the area.

He is survived by his mother and father, and many loving family members and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at 1 p.m. at the United Ministry, Delhi, with the Rev. Elliott Oakes officiating.

Friends are invited to call on Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home, 131 Main St., Delhi.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home of Delhi.

David L. Benedict

BAINBRIDGE — David L. Benedict, 62, of Searles Hill Road, Bainbridge, died unexpectedly on Jan. 26, 2004, in Bainbridge.

He was born on March 14, 1941, in Great Bend, Pa., the son of the late Burton and Bertha (Ruff) Benedict.

On Oct. 16, 1982, in Brisben, he married Kathleen Daniels Sabin, who survives.

Besides his wife, Kathy, he is survived by his children, Brenda and Imad Achkar of Allentown, Pa., Lael and Dale Benedict Wackford of Oneonta, Bonne Elliott of Bainbridge, Matthew Benedict of Bainbridge and Doddy L. Benedict of Bainbridge; his stepchildren, David S. Sabin Jr. of Bainbridge, Diane K. Sabin of Oxford and Dayle and Todd Miller of Bainbridge; his grandchildren, Gigi Stewart of Allentown, Pa., Heather Wackford of Oneonta, Katie Benedict and Kylie Benedict, both of Oneonta, Zachary Thomas, Alicia Sabin and Miranda Sabin, all of Sidney, and Andrew and Kaylee Miller of Bainbridge; his brothers and sisters, Dawn Foster of Masonville, Douglas and Nancy Benedict of Bainbridge, Ruth Northup of Masonville, Dale Price of Walton, Melody Adams of Norwich, and Burton Benedict of Masonville; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jackie and Butch Jenks of Greene, Ozzie and Tammy Daniels of Greene, Gordie and Natalie Daniels of Bainbridge, James and Beth Daniels of Greene, Mary and Russell Howell of Timmonsville, S.C., Martha and Art Jones of Corning, David and Deb Daniels of Chenango Forks, Mark and Kendra Daniels of Pocatello, Ind., Bruce and Judy Daniels of Binghamton, and Seana and Joseph Coker of Johnsonville, S.C.

His sisters, Doreen, Rosemary and Nancy Benedict; his son, Brian Benedict; and his brother-in-law, Carl Foster, predeceased him.

David loved his job at Elmer's Products in Bainbridge for 44 1/2 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bainbridge. He was also a member of Oxford Lodge No. 175 F&AM. He was a volunteer for Chenango County Habitat for Humanity and the Oxford Community Thanksgiving Dinner.

He enjoyed his children and grandchildren. He had supported a Christian Children's Fund child for 45 years. He enjoyed making wire and copper trees and was an avid reader.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at 5 p.m. from the United Church of Oxford, Main Street, Oxford, with the Rev. Sundar Samuel officiating.

Friends may call at the Behe Funeral Home, 21 Main St., Oxford, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and at the United Church of Oxford on Saturday from 3 p.m. until the time of the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Chenango County Habitat for Humanity or the Christian Children's Fund.

Jason Lee Kaiser

STAMFORD — Jason Lee Kaiser, 19, of Stamford died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, of injuries sustained from a motor vehicle accident.

Edwin B. Leslie

COOPERSTOWN — Edwin Bailey Leslie, 74, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at Bassett Healthcare.

He was born on June 1, 1929, the fourth son of Frank and Marguerite (Bailey) Leslie of Richfield Springs.

He was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School. He served his country bravely during the Korean War and was an Army mechanic stationed in Puerto Rico, during the Vietnam War.

He was a member of the Walter P. Eggleston Post No. 7128 VFW and the Clark F. Simmons American Legion Post No. 579.

Ed worked many years in construction and spent the past 10 years as the beloved caretaker of the Busch House employed by Alice and Chris Holbrook of Greenwich, Conn.

He was an avid skier and a proud member of the National Ski Patrol doing a lot of skiing at Mt. Otsego. He was also a member of the Richfield Springs and Cooperstown Fire Departments and Emergency Squads.

Ed is survived by two daughters, Sherry and Diane; a son, Edwin; nine grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; two sisters, Susan Berry and Elizabeth Focer; two sisters-in-law, Mary (Burr) Leslie and Olga Leslie; and many friends.

He will be missed by all that knew him.

He was predeceased by his parents; three brothers, William, Jack and James; and a grandson, Zebidiah Eagle Morris.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown, when the family will be in attendance.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Cooperstown, with the Rev. Lin Quinlan, pastor, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, PO Box 322, Cooperstown, NY 13326 or to the Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc., 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
