Walter J. Wolny

CHERRY VALLEY — Mr. Walter J. Wolny, 83, of Cherry Valley, retired mail carrier and former owner, with his wife, Mildred, of Your Friendly Corner Store in Cherry Valley, passed away Thursday, Sept. 29, 2005, at Palatine Nursing Home, Palatine Bridge.

Walter was born in 1922 in Brooklyn to German-born Magdaglena (Romann) and John Wolny. After his mother’s passing in 1927, he was raised by his maternal grandparents in Glendale, Queens.

He helped his Oma garden and tend the small chicken flock, with young Walt selling eggs door-to-door. He quit school in the eighth grade to help support his grandparents.

Decades later, he earned his GED, stating that he wanted to obtain a diploma before his firstborn did.

Two guys in the neighborhood were Warren Frederick and Bob Baillie. They were best pals from the age of 10 or so. During World War II, they joined the military.

Walt joined the Army and was an MP at a base on Long Island. He then transferred to the 78th Infantry and was sent to Europe. In the course of his service, PFC Walt and a few fellow infantrymen were separated from their unit during the Battle of the Bulge. A Belgian farm family hid them until the Nazis passed. Walt saw a lot of action and was often brought to the front to interpret during interrogation of German POWs. He was able to translate many dialects thanks to life in his German-American neighborhood.

He worked for Good Humor Ice Cream upon his return from the war, and he and his bride, Mildred Frederick, were given the best ice-cream wedding cake on one of the hottest days in June 1945. The couple settled on Long Island and gave life to three daughters. In 1971, he and his family moved to Cherry Valley.

He had many vocations over the years including dairy farmhand, truck driver, carpenter, aircraft mechanic, school bus driver, limo driver and mail carrier.

He and Warren had their own construction business in the early 1960s. He was proud of his work on the Lunar Expedition Module at Grumman Aircraft Corp. in Bethpage, Long Island.

His love of nature and rural places, animals of all kinds (especially cats), and his deep love for his family was the largest part of who he was. He was kind and good natured, and it showed in his sense of humor and sensibility.

A friend recently reminisced that once Walt had soda stolen from the groceries in his car. All he said was, "Someone must have been thirsty."

He is survived by his wife, Mildred; daughters, Diane Wolny of Garden City, Kan., Sue Goodlander and her husband, Ray, of East Springfield, and Gale Wolny and her husband, Wayne Graham, of Roseboom; a sister, Lynn Krzeminski of Cherry Valley; brother-in-law, Warren Frederick and his wife, Ann, of Cherry Valley and Massapequa; sister-in-law, Dorothy Baillie of Cherry Valley; and grandchildren, Christopher Fargonoli of Florida, Kathleen Hurney of California, and Alexander Fargonoli and family of Kansas.

He was predeceased by a sister, Betty Truex; and a brother-in-law, Bob Baillie.

He loved Cherry Valley and the people who made it his community.

Walt requested cremation, with no public funeral service.

He wanted friends and family to hold him in fond memories in their own way.

There will be an open house at his residence to celebrate his life from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, 2005.

Contributions in Walt’s memory may be made to the Cherry Valley Emergency Squad, the Susquehanna SPCA, or the VFW Post in Cooperstown, which he was a proud member of.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
