Helen Jean Moore
MIDDLEFIELD — Mrs. Helen Jean Moore, 73, of Moore Road in the town of Middlefield, died late Monday evening, March 16, 1998 at her home.

She was born Aug. 18, 1924 in the town of Tompkins, a daughter of Frank and Lillian (Berringer) Bush.

She married Blencoe Moore on May 27, 1941 in the parsonage of the Walton United Methodist Church.

Helen was raised and educated in the town of Tompkins, moving to Schenevus following her marriage. They later moved to Westford and then settled in the town of Middlefield in 1956.

An active member of the Middlefield United Methodist Church, she was a member and past president of the United Methodist Women and served as a Sunday School teacher. She was also a member of the DairyLea Cooperative and the Eastern A.I. Cooperative. She was an avid gardener and took great pride in her flower and vegetable gardens.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Blencoe of Middlefield; one daughter, Helen Madolin Moore of Middlefield; three sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel and Nellie Moore of Cooperstown, John and Theodora Moore of Middlefield and Floyd and Fran Moore of Clifton Park; nine grandchildren, Charlotte Hoag, Janette Peeters, Cynthia Dornburg, Timothy Moore, Michelle Moore, Richard Moore, Jay Moore, Amanda Morales and Bryan Moore; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Julia Martin of Trout Creek and Grace Hoff of Walton; a very close friend, Ruth Nissen; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 19, 1998 at the Middlefield United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ronald Fralick, pastor, officiating. Interment will be at a later date at the Westford Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown this evening, from 7-9 p.m. when Helen's family will be in attendance.

Expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, Heart Gifts Processing Center, P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse, N.Y. 13220-3049.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Helen L. Bourn
NEW BERLIN — Mrs. Helen L. Bourn, 98, formerly of Whites Hill Road, Guilford, died Tuesday, March 17, 1998 at Chase Memorial Nursing Home, New Berlin.

Born and raised in Gilbertsville, she was a graduate of the Gilbertsville High School, class of 1917 and attended the Oneonta Normal School for teachers' training.

Following her schooling at Oneonta Normal, she taught for two years in a one-room schoolhouse near Copes Corners and later worked for a short time in the Dairymen's League Milk Plant in Mount Upton.

She settled in Guilford in 1945 where she continued to reside until establishing her residence at the Chase Memorial Home in April of 1996.

Until poor health curtailed her from her activities, she enjoyed tending her vegetable and flower gardens.

Born on Feb. 26, 1900, in Gilbertsville, she was the daughter of Frederick Dixon and Marian Stebbins Dixon.

On March 9, 1921 in Guilford, she married Austin Bourn, who died March 1, 1976.

Helen is survived by two daughters, Margaret Gormley of Sidney and Nancy Kaufman of Cartersville, Ga.; two daughters-in-law, Dolores Bourn of Guilford and Candace Bourn of Norwich; 15 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

She was predeceased by two sons, Austin Bourn on Jan. 26, 1990 and Harry Bourn on Jan. 11, 1997, as well as predeceased by her three brothers, Paul Dixon, Frederick "Dick" Dixon and Arthur Dixon.

She was also predeceased by a grandson, Thomas Michael Bourn and by a great-grandson, Shane Bourn.

Funeral services for Mrs. Bourn will be held Friday at 2 p.m. from the Fahy Funeral Home of Norwich. The Rev. Charles Taylor, rector of the St. Andrew's Episcopal Church of New Berlin, will officiate.

Burial will be in the spring in the Pioneer Cemetery of North Guilford.

There will be no calling hours.

Lawrence R. Manley
EAST SPRINGFIELD — Mr. Lawrence R. Manley, 61, passed away Monday, March 16, 1998 at The Meadows.

He was born Nov. 18, 1936 in Cooperstown, the son of Russell and Esther (Gray) Manley.

Mr. Manley was a 1954 graduate of East Springfield School and worked for several years as a plumber/electrician for Alvin Rings Electrical, East Springfield; as a self-employed electrician; and for many years at Armstrong Appliance and Dairy Equipment, Richfield Springs.

He is survived by four sons and two daughters-in-law, Lancy and Susan Manley of Richfield Springs, Darryl and Kathleen Manley of Marcy, Dawayne Manley of New Hartford and Scott Manley of Ilion; two brothers, Carl Manley of Albany and Neil Manley of Springfield; three sisters, Loraine Emoie of Frankfort, Nola Cook of East Springfield and Marian Westerman of Springfield Center and eight grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Doris Manley and Norma Saltys.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 19, 1998 at 11 a.m. at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley with Mr. Dan West, officiating. Spring burial will take place in the Hartwick Cemetery, Hartwick Seminary.

Calling hours will take place from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18 at the funeral home.

Contributions in Mr. Manley's memory may be made to the Springfield First Responders, East Springfield.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Robert Guy Van Meter
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Robert Guy Van Meter, 66, died recently at Willowwood Nursing Home in North Adams, Mass.

Dr. Van Meter taught mathematics and computer science at the State University College at Oneonta from 1971 until 1996. He had previously taught at Geneva College and Alleghany College in Pennsylvania, Florida Presbyterian (Eckerd) College and St. Lawrence University in Canton.

Dr. Van Meter was born Oct. 19, 1931 in New Castle, Pa., the son of T. Guy and Velma (Ruby) Van Meter.

Following graduation from Union Township High School in New Castle in 1949, he attended Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pa., receiving a B.S. in mathematics. He was awarded a Ph.D in mathematics from Duke University in 1963. He also earned an M.S. in computer science from SUNY Binghamton in 1982.

He is survived by five children, Terry of Oswego, Guy of Carlsbad, Calif., Chris of Binghamton, Dana of West Haven, Conn. and Derek of Angola; his sister, Martha Wolford resides in New Castle, Pa. He is survived as well by two grandchildren, Jacob and Joshua Mumm of Oswego and three nieces and a nephew.

He was predeceased by his parents, a sister and an infant son.

Burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in New Bedford, Pa.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, University of Miami School of Medicine, 1600 Northwest 10th Ave., R-48, Miami, Fla. 33136.

Herman E. Mattice
EAST WORCESTER — Herman E. Mattice, 86, of East Worcester, died Tuesday, Mach 17, 1998 at Bassett Healthcare Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born April 4, 1911 in East Worcester, the son of Edwin and Sarah (Queil) Mattice.

He married Helen Podpadec on Nov. 25, 1939.

He was a lifelong area resident.

Mr. Mattice owned and operated a dairy farm in East Worcester. He enjoyed his cows and working outside.

Mr. Mattice was a former member of the East Worcester Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Mattice of East Worcester; a daughter, Karen Brooks of Pine Plains; two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Donna Mattice of Schenectady and Shane and Elaine Mattice of Oneonta; eight grandchildren; a sister, Luna Mattice of East Worcester and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, William Mattice.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, 1998 at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, 115 Main St., Worcester.

The Rev. Susan Strang, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Worcester will officiate.

Burial will be in the East Worcester Cemetery at a later date.

Calling hours will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with the family in attendance from 7-9 p.m. Friday, March 20 at the funeral chapel.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mr. Mattice to the East Worcester Fire Department or East Worcester First Responders, P.O. Box 781, East Worcester, N.Y. 12064 or the Worcester Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 191, Worcester, N.Y. 12197.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Mildred R. Carr
BURLINGTON FLATS — Mildred R. Carr, 94, of Burlington Flats, died Tuesday, March 17, 1998 at Chase Nursing Home in New Berlin.

She was born Dec. 8, 1903 in Edmeston, the daughter of Leon M. and Anna E. (Davis) Carr.

Mildred had been previously employed by Otsego Mutual and still served on their Board of Directors.

She was a member of the Burlington Flats Baptist Church, where she played as organist for many, many years. Mildred was also a member of the Friendly Neighbors Club, where she would delight in socializing with her friends. At Chase Nursing Home, she continued her love of music by playing the piano for all to enjoy.

She is survived by her sister, Beatrice Willems of Daytona Beach, Fla.; her nieces, nephews and spouses, Alan and Cornelia Higgins, Carl and MaryLou Higgins, Margie and Anthony Johnson, Marlea and Anthony Hickling, Johanna and Leonard Bird and Fred and Patti Willems.

She was predeceased by her sister, Minerva Higgins.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 20, 1998 at 2 p.m. at the Burlington Flats Baptist Church, Burlington Flats, with the Rev. William Highfield, officiating.

Calling hours are Thursday, March 19, 1998 from 3-6 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Interment will take place in the spring at Edmeston Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mildred's memory to the Burlington Flats Baptist Church.

Arrangements are by the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Verna Jean Whitbeck
FRANKLIN — Verna Jean Whitbeck, 52, of Franklin, died Tuesday, March 17, 1998 at her residence.

She was born Aug. 29, 1945 in Walton, the daughter of Carlton and Hester (Francisco) Marshall.

She married Gene R. Whitbeck on April 28, 1961 in Milford.

Verna was employed at the A.O. Fox Hospital up until her illness and prior to that she worked at the Oneonta Nursing Home.

A lifelong area resident, Verna was a member of the Franklin United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Gene R. Whitbeck of Franklin; her children and their spouses, Michael R. and Janet Whitbeck of Morris, Thelma Jean Peters of Roxbury, Gene Roger Whitbeck, Marjorie LaFleur and Barbara Ann Whitbeck, all of Middletown; her mother, Hester Marshall of Franklin; her brothers, sisters and their spouses, Allan and Alice Marshall of Franklin, Glenn and Ruth Marshall of Otego, Marvin Marshall of Sidney and Ginger and Gene Brundege of Gloucester, Va.

She is also survived by nine grandchildren, along with several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A service to celebrate the life of Verna Jean Whitbeck will be held on Friday, March 20, 1998 at 1 p.m. in the Franklin United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Lyle Linder, pastor officiating.

There will be no calling hours and the family has wished that memorial contributions be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Gerald Marchel
MOUNT UPTON — Gerald Marchel, 71, of Mount Upton, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 17, 1998 at The Hosptial, Sidney.

He was born to the late John and Edith Maxin Marshall in Lexington on Sept. 4, 1926.

Gerald was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 801, F and AM, Sidney.

He and his wife Ruth were married July 3, 1988 in Sidney.

He retired as a machinist from ECD of Bendix in 1985.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Ruth Marchel of Mount Upton; a son, Walter R. Marchel of Unadilla; a daughter and son-in-law, Sharlene and Carl Lints of Oxford; a daughter and son-in-law, Sharry and Daniel Bednar of Altamonte Springs, Fla.; a stepson, James Tomeo of Sidney; a stepson, Ben Tomeo of London, England; a brother and sister-in-law, Clatyon and Rita Marshall of Schenectady; grandchildren, Kelly, Carl Jr., Jessica, Justin, Beth and Sharon.

He was predeceased by a son, John Marchel; a daughter, Sharon Marchel, one brother and three sisters.

A Masonic Service will be held Friday, March 20, 1998 at the C.H. Landers Funeral Home, 21 Main St., Sidney at 8:30 p.m.

Friends are invited to call from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, March 20, 1998 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Godfrey Cemetery, Guilford in the spring.

Josephine (Jo) Gordon
MARGARETVILLE — Josephine (Jo) Gordon, 82, of Margaretville, died March 17, 1998 at Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville.

She was born Jan. 10, 1916 in Kortright Station, the daughter of Herbert Dexter and Helen Philpott.

She married Robert S. Gordon on Sept. 25, 1943 in Paterson, N.J.

She was a bookkeeper at Whites Dairy, which she and her husband purchased in 1955, until the business was sold.

She is survived by her husband, Robert S. Gordon of Margaretville; one daughter, Donna Rae Gordon of East Greenbush; one son, Scott and daughter-in-law, Ellen Todd Gordon of Roxbury; one sister, Jessie Clark and several grandchildren.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Donations in memory of Jo Gordon can be made to the Margaretville Memorial Hosptial Ambulance Fund.
