Richard L. Burton

Richard L. Burton, 55, of Rt. 30, Mayfield, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003 at Nathan Littauer Hospital following a long illness. He was born in Gloversville on Dec. 24, 1947. The son of the late Lial and Madiline Madison Burton.

Richard was a graduate of Northville Central School and was employed as an Auxiliary Boiler Operator for General Electric in Schenectady, retiring in 1999 due to ill health. Richard was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving on the Kitty Hawk. He was a lifetime area resident and a member of the Northville Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife Pauline Sweet, whom he married Feb. 7, 1970; his son, Michael Burton of Gloversville; his daughter, Angella Whitehouse of Gloversville; three brothers, Ken Burton of Riceville, David Burton of Gloversville and Ted Burton of Galway; five sisters, Lila Blowers of Mayfield, Martha VanAlstyne of Gloversville, Violet O'Neill of Galway, Rosalie Seelow or Broadalbin and Charmaine Ostrander of Texas; seven grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two brothers, William and Albert Burton.
Friends may call Monday, Sept. 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Northville Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 30, at the Baptist Church of Northville at noon with the Rev. Richard Klueg officiating. Burial will be in Union Mills Cemetery, Broadalbin. Memorial contributions may be made to the Baptist Church of Northville or to the American Cancer Society.

Arlene Tofinchio

Mrs. Arlene C. Tofinchio, 70, of Gloversville, died Sunday at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, after a long illness. Born in Waterbury, CT, she was the daughter of Rudolph and Melvina Dziel Desriusseaux. She attended Catholic schools in Watertown, CT, for many years. She was employed for many years at MCA Records, where she was an inspector, retiring in 1979. Mrs. Tofinchio was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church. On October 18, 1952, she married Jerry Tofinchio, who survives. She is also survived by two sons, David Tofinchio of Shelton, CT, and Paul Tofinchio of Behel, CT; two grandchildren, Brittany and Garett Tofinchio; several nieces and nephews. There will be no viewing hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. Interment will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Amico Funeral Home.

Virginia C. Richardson Lachmayer

Mrs. Virginia C. Richardson Lachmayer, age 76, of Third St., Gloversville, died Sunday morning, September 28, 2003 at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville.

She was born January 16, 1927 in Gloversville, the daughter of George Sr. and Ellen Schrum Richardson. She was a member of Fremont St. United Methodist Church, Gloversville.

On December 14, 1969 she married Kenneth M. Lachmayer who died December 7, 2002.
She is survived by four children, Larry Gray of Cortland, NY, Robert Gray of Amsterdam and Stephen Gray and Martha Wilson of Gloversville; two sisters, Dorothy Calhoun of Gloversville and Jane Schrum of Amsterdam; 15 grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Catherine Ann Gray; and by a brother, William Richardson.

The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Wayne E. Jones Sr. officiating. Interment will take place at King-Northampton Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Rd., Loudonville, NY 12211.

Edward W. Lockrow

Mr. Edward W. Lockrow, age 86, of County Highway 110, Broadalbin, died Sunday, September 28 2003 at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam.

He was born September 7, 1917 in Gloversville, the son of Russell and Alida Williamson Lockrow. He was a proud 1936 graduate of Broadalbin High School and later served his country in the Navy during World War II.

Mr. Lockrow was employed by General Electric Company in Schenectady for most of his life, retiring there as an inspector in the turbine division. He was a member of the Broadalbin American Legion Post No. 337, the G.E. Quarter Century Club, and the former member of the Broadalbin Baptist Church. His main interests include the town of Broadalbin, where he served as town justice from 1956 until 1984. He was a member of the State Magistrates Association and the Fulton-Hamilton Magistrates Assoc.
He loved spending time on his boat, and was a life member of the Sacandaga Boat Club. He was also a photographer, avid fisherman and a Saratoga Raceway fan.

Mr. Lockrow is survived by his wife, Doris Smith Simmons Lockrow of Broadalbin; daughter, Carol Andersen of Penn Yan, NY; granddaughter, Julie Andersen; stepdaughter, Carol Sherman of Midlothian, VA; stepson, Robert Close and his wife, Cathie of Ballston Lake; brother-in-law, Harold Smith of Ocala, FL; six step grandchildren; and five step great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his first wife, E. Katherine Lockrow in 1994.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Jeffords & Stewart Funeral Home, 85 W. Main St., Broadalbin. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church of Broadalbin with the Rev. Paul R. Moyer officiating. Interment will take place at Fern Dale Cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church 54 W. Main St, Broadalbin or the Broadalbin Volunteer Ambulance Corps, PO Box 23, Broadalbin, NY 12025.

Marlin S. Fuller

Marlin S. Fuller of Caroga Lake, died August 30, 2002, at the age of 83 at the Fulton County Healthcare Facility. Marlin was born July 24, 1919, in Palatine Bridge, N.Y., the son of Myrtle and Levere Fuller. He was predeceased by one brother, Levere L. Fuller. The family moved to Delmar, N.Y. in 1935 and Marlin graduated from Bethlehem Central High School in 1937. Marlin was a star athlete in baseball and track. He played saxophone and clarinet in his own dance band. Marlin met the love of his life during high school and they were married on August 29, 1941.

Mr. Fuller served as a navigator on a B-24 in the Army Air Corps. during World War II. He was held prisoner of war by the Germans from November 1944 to April 1945. From 1939 to 1971, he worked at the Delmar Post Office and for many of those years was a rural mail carrier. He was respected and loved by the people on his route and was known to always go out of his way for them. Marlin was a member and deacon of the First Reformed Church of Bethlehem at Selkirk. He served on the governing board of the Lewis M. Fowler Memorial Camp and was president of the Camp Fowler Association. Marlin and his wife, Clara, were volunteers for the Meals on Wheels program in Caroga Lake.

Mr. Fuller is survived by his wife of 61 years, Clara Yeomans Fuller of Caroga Lake; his children, Lynne and her husband Jim Williams of Ballston Lake, Roy of Caroga Lake, and Jeffrey Fuller and his wife Ellen Bauer of Dunedin, Fla. He is also survived by his grandchildren J. Robert Williams, his wife JoAnne; five great-grandchildren, Stephen, Jason, Katie, Jasmine, Angel and Erika; one cousin, Nathalie Bullock; and 15 nieces and nephews.
Marlin's greatest joy was his wife and children. He was a kind and ethical man with a wonderful sense of humor, and was beloved by friends and family. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Contributions may be made to the Caroga Lake Volunteer Fire Company or the First Reformed Church of Bethlehem, Selkirk, N.Y.

Carol J. Blanchard

Mrs. Carol J. Blanchard, 60, of Ext. South Melcher Street, Johnstown, died Monday, September 1, 2003 at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam following a long illness.

She was born July 4, 1943 in Amsterdam, a daughter of Earl and Evelyn Rhodes Mattice.

Carol was employed as an office manager at N.A. Taylor for 28 years, retiring in August of 1998 due to illness.
She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Blanchard, whom she married September 24, 1960; he died December 29, 1999.

Survivors include a son, Mark Blanchard of Fultonville; two daughters, Connie Benjamin of Perth and Joyce Blanchard of Johnstown; one brother, Raymond Mattice of North Carolina; seven grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the A.C. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 East Main Street, Johnstown.

Friends and family may call on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.

Memorial contributions may be made to Kidney Foundation or to J.A.V.A.C.

Bernard Evans

Bernard Evans, age 50, of Fonda, NY, died September 1 at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, NY. Born January 13, 1953, in the Bronx, he was the son of Mallie and Mary Williams Evans.

He was a resident of the Lexington Center and attended it's Day Treatment Center.

He is survived by one brother, Michael Evans of Charlotte, NC; and one sister, Julia Burnette of Raleigh, NC; nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Hollenbeck Funeral Home,4 Second Ave., Gloversville, where a funeral service will directly follow with the Rev. R.W. Williams officiating. Memorial contributions can be made to the Lexington Center of Gloversville.

Franklyn E. "Red" Carroll

Mr. Franklyn E. "Red" Carroll, 87, of Ext. Glebe Street, Johnstown, died Friday, September 5, 2003 at home.

He was born June 16, 1916 in Fultonville, the son of Alfred and Bridget Knight Carroll.

He was a WWII Army Veteran.
Red was employed as a lineman for Niagara Mohawk until his retirement.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Haggart Carroll; a son, William Carroll of Norristown, PA; and a granddaughter, Kym Carroll of Norristown, PA.

Graveside services will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. at the Maple Ave. Cemetery, Fultonville.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 East Main Street, Johnstown.

Andy Beres

Mr. Andy Beres, 79, of S. Kingsboro Avenue, Gloversville, died Wednesday morning at Nathan Littauer Hospital after a short illness.

Born May 28, 1923, in Keck Center, N.Y., he was the son of Andy and Velma Kozma Beres. He was a lifelong area resident and attended Johnstown Schools.

He was first employed by the Premier Glove Company in Fultonville and later worked at the White Mop Wringer Company in Fultonville for a number of years until retiring years ago.
Over the years he enjoyed fishing, hunting and reading.

Mr. Beres was of the Methodist Faith.

He was predeceased by his long time companion Nancy Eaker, who died in 1996.

He is survived by two step-sons, Wayne Hazzard of Amsterdam and Butch Hazzard of Fultonville; two sisters, Julia Dovey of Ormand Beach, Fla and Ella Russo of Johnstown; several step-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Friday at noon at the Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main Street, Fultonville, with the Rev. Newton Perrins officiating. Burial will take place in Ephratah Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday from 11 to noon at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Johnstown Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Ada H. Bundy

Mrs. Ada H. Bundy, 89, of Honey Hill Rd., Fort Plain, died Tuesday, October 8, 2002 at her home after a brief illness.

She was born in Fort Plain on August 14, 1913, the daughter of Xavier and Amanda Van Deusen Muhlebeck. Mrs. Bundy was educated at Fort Plain Central School.

Mrs. Bundy was employed as a meat manager at a local grocery store in Colden, NY, retiring in 1972. Previously she was employed at the former Luxuray Mill in Fort Plain.
She resided most of her life in Fort Plain. She previously lived in the Buffalo, NY area.

She was of the Lutheran faith. She enjoyed crocheting and reading.

On September 25, 1937 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Fort Plain, she married Colon E. Bundy, who died January 31, 1971.

She was predeceased by one daughter, Phyllis J. Bundy.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and nephews; several great-great-nieces and nephews.

A 10:00 a.m. funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2002 at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie with Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating. Burial will take place at Lakeside Memorial Park, town of Hamburg, NY. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, October 11. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Rd., Loudonville, NY 12211.

Rose L. Shostek

Rose L. Shostek, 60, of 1326 Krigsbush Road, St. Johnsville, passed away on Wednesday, October 9, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, N.Y.

She was born January 15, 1942, in St. Johnsville, the daughter of Violet E. (Miller) Battisti and the late Joseph W. Battisti. Rose was a graduate of the St. Johnsville High School, class of 1961, and was a lifelong resident of St. Johnsville.

Her marriage to John Shostek took place on February 6, 1965, at St. Patrick's Church in St. Johnsville. For 13 years, Rose and her husband John owned and operated the Village Restaurant in Canajoharie. At one time she worked for the former Palatine Dye Co.
Mrs. Shostek was a member of St. Patrick's Church and also its Alter Rosary Society until her illness.

Because Rose considered her family as her foremost priority, she gave her full attention to the needs and concerns of her loved ones. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, she truly enjoyed all family gatherings, especially the traditional Sunday dinner.

Survivors include her mother, Violet of St. Johnsville; her husband of 37 years, John; a son, John Stostek Jr. and wife Beth of Canajoharie; three daughters, Deborah Mosher and husband Scott of Fort Plain, Dawn Failing of Palatine Bridge and Jean Gandy and fiance Jeff Doxtater of Little Falls; six brothers, Joseph Battisti and wife Connie of Fort Plain, Peter Battisti and wife Jane of St. Johnsville, Anthony Battisti and wife Patricia of Jordanville, Paul Battisti and wife Jean of St. Johnsville and Dennis Battisti and Pia Kadtke of Palatine Bridge; her grandsons Michael Shostek, Kory Failing, Chauncey (CJ) Mosher, Nathan Mosher, Kyle (Goober) Grandy and Samuel Shostek; a granddaughter, Kelly Pope; a great-grandson, Anthony Shostek; many nieces and nephews including Dave and Paula Sutton of Amsterdam; and several cousins, aunts, uncles and in-laws.

She was predeceased by an infant sister.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2002, at 9 a.m. from the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville, N.Y., where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. Interment will follow at St. Johnsville Cemetery. Friends and relatives may call at funeral home on Friday, October 11, 2002, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. All memorial contributions may be made to the S.A.V.A.C. or to St. Patrick's Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

John Watkins

Mr. John Watkins, 93, died Tuesday, October 8, 2002 at the Wells Nursing Home, Johnstown, NY.

He was born February 2, 1909 in N. Syracuse, NY, the son of Homer and Dorothy Shelly Watkins. He attended Syracuse University for four years, and later graduated from Auburn Seminary. He was a Methodist minister for ten years, and later purchased a farm in Herkimer County which he operated for about ten years. He retired from the Adirondack Bat Company of Dolgeville, NY. He moved to Florida and spent his summers in Canada Lake, NY.

Mr. Watkins is survived by his daughter, Christine Watkins of San Diego, CA; son, Charles Watkins of Stuart, FL; three grandchildren, Sarah Allan, Charles Watkins, David Scott Watkins; four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Lillian Hodge Watkins; his sister, Bertha Rogers; and his brother, Robert Watkins.

A private service will take place at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., Gloversville.

Carol Anne Frye

Carol Anne Frye, 59, of Fifth Ave., Gloversville, died Wednesday, October 8, 2003 at St. Peter's Hospital, Albany, NY. She was born June 25, 1944 in Johnstown, NY, the daughter of the late Gerald and Mildred Delong Wheaton.

Carol was a graduate of Johnstown High School class of 1963 and was employed as a laborer, sewing fabric for Hawkins Fabric in Johnstown until 1999, retiring due to disability.

She was a lifetime area resident. She was also a member of many various book clubs and loved reading.
Survivors include her husband, Gary Frye of Gloversville, whom she married September 25, 1964; her daughter, Toni Butler of Gloversville, NY; one sister, Elaine Brooker of Yorkville, NY. Three grandchildren, whom were the love of her life and several aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive her. One granddaughter predeceased her.

Friends may call Saturday, October 11, 2003 at the Northville Funeral Service from noon to 1 p.m. where a funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Edinburg Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

James Beltrano

James Beltrano, 98, of Garnsey Road, Rexford, died Monday, September 30, 2002. Born in Italy, Mr. Beltrano came to the United States in 1923. He lived most of his life in Gloversville, moving to Schenectady in 1976. Mr. Beltrano worked as a glove cutter for the former Crocetta Brothers Co. in Gloversville for 35 years, retiring in 1965. While living in Gloversville, Mr. Beltrano was a communicant of Mount Carmel Church, where he served as an usher and was a member of the church's Holy Name Society. Mr. Beltrano was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church, Schenectady, and a member of its Holy Name Society. Mr. Beltrano is predeceased by his first wife, Anna Crocetta Beltrano, who died in 1971, and his second wife, Annita Beltrano, who died in 2001. He is survived by a stepdaughter, Dolores DeRuscio of Niskayuna, and a stepson, Dominick Mancini of Glenville. He is also survived by six step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral, which will be conducted Wednesday at 8:15 a.m. at Gleason Funeral Home, 730 Union St., and at 9 a.m. at St. Anthony's Church, where the Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Entombment will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony's Church, 331 Seward Place, Schenectady, NY 12305.

Craig P. Havens

Craig P. Havens, 64, of Casa Grande Court, Winter Springs, Florida, died September 29, 2002, at Florida Hospital Altamonte, Altamonte Springs, Florida.

He was born February 20, 1938, in Niagara Falls, New York.

He was a salesperson for Robb & Stucky. He lived in Gloversville and was a business owner and executive director of Fulton County Chamber of Commerce.
He was a longtime member of the Eccentric Club of Gloversville, an avid skier, boater and dedicated husband, father and grandfather.

Survivors include his wife, Elvie Havens of Winter Springs, Florida; son, Glenn Havens of Mayfield, New York; daughter, Lisa Weiss of Ludlow, Vermont; brother, Frederick Havens of Austin, Texas; and three grandchildren.

Lawrence D. Sunderland Jr.

Lawrence D. Sunderland Jr., 59, of Brooksville, died Sunday, September 22, 2002. Born in Miami, FL, he came here 22 years ago from Ft. Rucker, AL. He was a registered nurse with Zephyrhills Correctional Institute, a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War with over 21 years of service. He also loved to fish and read.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn; a son, Larry Sunderland III of Brooksville; a sister, Betty Powell of Gainesville, FL; cousin, Joe and Dot Flood of Cobb Town, GA. A memorial service was held Sept. 26, 2002, at Fremont St. Methodist Church chapel at 6 p.m. for relatives and friends with Rev. Wayne Jones Sr. officiating. His wife, Carolyn J. Muddle is a former resident of Gloversville.

Charles H. Heagle Jr.

Mr. Charles H. Heagle Jr., 88, of 308 S. Melcher St., Johnstown, N.Y., passed away Tuesday, Sept. 30, at Nathan Littauer Hospital, where he had been a patient since Sept. 18. He was born November 5, 1914 in Johnstown, the son of Charles H. and Hazel Lee Heagle Sr. He was a 1933 graduate of Johnstown High School and the Gloversville Business School. Mr. Heagle was first employed at the former Boyce-Lazarus Glove Co. and spent most of his career as superintendent of manufacturing for M. Denkert & Co., Sporting Goods in Johnstown until it closed in 1973. He was then employed by the SUNY Albany Post Office until his retirement in 1982. For many years he served as clerk to the Johnstown Board of Education.

Mr. Heagle was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Johnstown where he served as elder and deacon. He was a member of St. Patrick's Lodge No. 4 F. & A.M., Johnstown L.O.O.M., Burroughs Nature Study Club, the Johnstown Historical Society and was a member of the former Colonial Club.

Mr. Heagle was united in marriage to the former Barbara Groves on July 2, 1938 and she passed away on May 13, 1983. He is survived by a son, Robert C. Heagle of Tokyo, Japan; a daughter, Kathryn Dingman of Johnstown; a sister, Mary Niles of Johnstown; four grandchildren; one great granddaughter; nieces; nephews and cousins.
Friends may call Thursday, Oct. 2, from 4-7 p.m. at the Ehle Funeral Home, 15 N. William St., Johnstown, N.Y., where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday. Interment will be in Johnstown Cemetery, Johnstown N.Y. Memorial contributions may be made to the Johnstown Historical Society or JAVAC.

John H. Williams

John H. Williams, 71, of Hope Falls Rd., Northville, died Tuesday, September 30, 2003 at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, NY. He was born January 9, 1932 in Hope, NY. The son of the late Isaac and Portia Brownell Williams.

John was a graduate of Northville Central School and Ithaca College. He served in the Navy from 1955 to 1957 and then was employed by General Electric in Schenectady until retirement.

He was a member of the Sacandaga Golf Club, a lifetime area resident and an avid wood-worker.
Survivors include his son, John D. Williams of Gainesville, FL; daughter, Lori Lather of Albany, NY; one brother, Seymour Williams of Northville, NY; one sister, Mary Lefoe of Gloversville, NY. Six grandchildren also survive him. He was predeceased by one son, Mark Williams in 1999.

Friends may call Wednesday, October 1, 2003 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Northville Funeral Service, 401 Bridge St., Northville, where funeral services will be held Thursday, October 2, 2003 at 9 a.m. with the Rev. Tom Blowers officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Northville. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Martin Christensen

Martin Christensen, aged 62, of Hope, N.Y., peacefully went home to be with his Heavenly Father on October 10th, 2002. Martin and his wife, Helen, owned and operated the Hope Diner for 32 years. They were blessed by the many people who came through the front door.

He served the Town of Hope as supervisor for 10 years. He belonged to the Town of Hope Volunteer Fire Company and Ambulance Corps. and was a member of the Sacandaga Golf Club. Martin enjoyed golfing with his longtime friends and traveling with his family. He was an outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed hiking, fishing and canoeing.
Surviving Martin is his wife of 37 years, Helen; his children, Evan, Carene, Thomas and Amy; his brothers, Bruce, Peter and Thomas; and his sisters, May and June. He was also blessed with five grandchildren.

A celebration of life memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Wells Wesleyan Church. There will be a time to visit with the Christensen family in the church's fellowship hall at 4 p.m. following the service. In lieu of flowers, Martin requested that donations be made to help the Wells Wesleyan Church. Arrangements are by the Northville Funeral Service.
