Joyce A. Murphy
Mrs. Joyce A. Murphy, 72, of County Highway 107, Fort Johnson, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002 at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville, after a short illness.
She was born July 25, 1930 in Higganum, Conn., the daughter of Martin and Janet Carlson Taylor.
Mrs. Murphy was employed at Stewart's in Johnstown for twelve years until her retirement.
She was predeceased by her husband, John F. Murphy, who died Dec. 29, 1996.
Survivors include one brother, Robert Taylor of Stuart, Florida; one sister, Cindy Potter of West Greenwich, Rhode Island.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 12 noon at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 E. Main St., Johnstown with the Rev. James Fitzmaurice officiating.
There will be no calling hours.
Interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Johnstown.
Marion J. Raasch
Mrs. Marion J. Raasch, 76, of Argersinger Road, Fultonville, N.Y., died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam after a brief illness.
She was born in the town of Jefferson, N.Y,. on June 27, 1926, the daughter of Elmer E. and Aurelia Wainwright Woodbeck. Mrs. Raasch was educated in Schoharie County area schools.
Mrs. Raasch was formerly employed as a nurses' aide at the Fulton Co. Infirmary for 15 years, retiring in June 1984. Previously she was employed at the Wells House in Johnstown.
She had resided in the town of Glenn since February 2002. She previously lived in the town of Sharon for six years and Johnstown, NY.
Mrs. Raasch was of the Protestant faith.
On May 12, 1973, at Reformed Church, Canajoharie, she married Kolin F. Raasch, who died Feb. 25, 2002.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Dewey B. Darrow Sr.; three sisters, Vivian Shunk, Myra Rouse and Lula Miller; and two brothers, Raymond A. Woodbeck and Sanford Woodbeck.
Survivors include three sons, Dewey B. and Jean Darrow Jr. of Burlington, Vt., Douglas E. and Joyce Darrow of Fultonville, N.Y. and Theodore A. and Terrie Darrow of Fort Plain, N.Y.; one brother and sister-in-law, John and Joan Woodbeck of Winter Springs, Fla.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Helmuth and Sally Miller of Johnstown, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002 at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home Inc., 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie, N.Y. with Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating. Private burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Fonda. Relatives and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at the funeral home. Shauna R. Beekman

Shauna R. Beekman, age 14, died Wednesday, October 8, at her residence in Gloversville, NY. Born April 2, 1989, in Gloversville, she was the daughter of Merdice L. Jones and Richard Beekman. She was a lifelong area resident and a student of Gloversville High School.
Miss Beekman is survived by her parents; grandparents, Charlie Mae Jones of Gloversville and Jeraldine and Calvin Beekman of Gloversville; four brothers, Lucas, Craig, Nathaniel and Justice Beekman, all of Gloversville; one sister, Latesha Allard of Tampa, FL; aunts, uncles and cousins.
Friends may call Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Fremont St. United Methodist Church, 17 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a funeral service will immediately follow. Interment will take place at the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville. Memorial contributions can be made to the Shauna R. Beekman Memorial Fund, c/o Hudson River Bank, Gloversville. Paul E. Christman
Mr. Paul E. Christman, 52, of Helwig Street, Gloversville, died Sunday, October 13, 2002 at home after a long illness.
He was born June 14, 1950 in Gloversville, the son of John and Jane Adeline Ross Christman.
Mr. Christman served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
He was self-employed for many years and also served as a volunteer for JAVAC until retiring due to disability.
Survivors include his wife, Sally Wilcox Christman, whom he married May 9, 1981; two daughters, Kathleen Christman of East Aurora and Theresa Christman of Gloversville; one son, Matthew Christman of Hagaman; four brothers, Jim and Roger Christman of Mayfield, David Christman of Johnstown and Charles Christman of Nashua, New Hampshire; seven grandchildren; nieces; nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by one son, Paul E. Christman in 1974.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 East Main Street, Johnstown with Rev. R.W. Williams officiating.
Friends and family may call today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.

Margaret Marsh
Mrs. Margaret Marsh, 71, of Pleasant Ave., Johnstown, died Sunday, October 13, 2002 at Albany Medical Center, after a brief illness.
She was born July 28, 1931 in Tompkins Cove, the daughter of John and Margarette Lyons Lodini.
Mrs. Marsh's hobby was to crochet and she spent many hours creating things for friends and family.
For many years she worked as a short order cook.
On September 16, 1950, she married Harold Marsh; he died February 23, 1996.
Survivors include one daughter, Margaret Basley of Garnerville; three sons, Harold Marsh of Virginia, John R. Marsh of Johnstown and Tim Marsh of Gloversville; one sister, Patricia Cronk of Stoney Point; one brother, John L. Lodini of Illinois; four grandchildren, Sandra Ferrara, John T. Marsh, Tara Basley and Kimberly Basley; four great-grandchildren; her dear friend, Bryant Miller of Ft. Hunter; nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by one grandson, Eric Marsh; and one brother, William Lodini.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 East Main Street, Johnstown with Rev. Chris Hamm officiating.
Friends and family may call on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Gardiner V. Baurle
Mr. Gardiner V. Baurle, age 70, of Jay St., Gloversville, died suddenly Tuesday, October 14, 2003 at home.
He was born July 22, 1933 in Gloversville, the son of Francis Sr. and Ethel Walker Baurle. He served in the Air Force from 1952 to 1962. He was employed by Karg Brothers Inc. of Johnstown for many years.
Mr. Baurle was a former member of the Eagles Aerie, Moose Lodge and VFW Post, all of Gloversville. He enjoyed fishing and camping.
He is survived by his son, Eric G. Baurle of Gloversville; two brothers, Donald Baurle of Glens Falls and Allen J. Baurle of Sebastian, FL; a sister, Donna Wyllie of Mayfield; a grandson; five stepchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth Weaver Baurle in 1978; also by his companion, Lillian "Carol" James in 2001; and three brothers, Francis J. Baurle Jr., Lloyd R. Baurle and Emmett C. Baurle.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a funeral service will be held 9:30 a.m. Friday with the Rev. R.W. Paul Simonds

Paul Simonds, age 35, of Gloversville, died after being stricken at his home Tuesday. Born November 13, 1967 in Amsterdam, NY, he was the son of R. Eric and Anne Larner Simonds. He was a graduate of Gloversville High School and attended FMCC. He later graduated from the Zone 5 Police Academy of Troy, NY.
Mr. Simonds was a police officer with the Gloversville Police Force, where he received several letters of commendation for his work.
Mr. Simonds was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He enjoyed playing the guitar and had the unique ability to do so with his right or left hand. He was also a talented artist whose specialty was pencil drawings of the white tailed deer. He was a past member of the United Rod and Gun Club of Benson, NY.
Mr. Simonds is survived by his parents, Eric Simonds of Mayfield, NY and Anne Briner of Stratford, NY; his wife, the former Jodie Swart of Gloversville; two daughters, Jessica and Autumn Simonds of Gloversville; two brothers, Eric Simonds of Gloversville and Christian Simonds of Johnstown; one sister, Constance Simonds of Gloversville; three nieces; aunts; uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be private. Interment in Kings Cemetery, Northampton, NY. Arrangements are by the Hollenbeck Funeral Home Inc.
Anita O. Vrooman
Anita O. Vrooman, 28, of Lomasney Avenue, Schenectady, died on Tuesday, October 14, 2003 at Albany Medical Center. Born in Schenectady on November 16, 1974, she is the daughter of Dean I. Vrooman Sr. of Schenectady and Vanessa Hall of Schenectady.
Anita was a graduate of Linton High School and attended Schenectady Community College. She had worked as a teller for several years at OTB in Schenectady. Anita is predeceased by her paternal grandparents, George I. Vrooman and Elsie Proctor. Survivors include her children, Tyra Williams, Camille Bowman and Christopher M. Dixon Jr., all of Schenectady; her brother and sisters, Dean I. Vrooman Jr. of Albany, LynneŽ Wilson of Harrisburg, PA and Emily Taegder-Vrooman of Montgomery, NY; her maternal grandparents, Benjamin and Christine Hall of Gloversville; her fianceŽ, Christopher M. Dixon Sr. of Schenectady; several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday morning 10 a.m. at Peoples A.M.E. Zion Church, 135 E. Fulton Street, Gloversville, NY. Calling hours will be held at the Bond Funeral Home, Broadway & Guilderland Avenue, Schenectady, NY on Friday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. Interment in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville, NY. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Anita's memory to a fund established for her children, Tyra, Camille and Christopher at Trustco bank in Schenectady.
George Stangle
George Stangle, 84, formerly of Union Street, died Friday morning, October 17, 2003, at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville.
He was born in West Galway on October 30, 1918, a son of Frank and Theresa Isope Stangle and attended local schools in West Galway. Mr. Stangle moved to Broadalbin in 1948. Later, he moved to the Vail Mills area and in 1973 returned to Broadalbin. He had been a resident at the Nathan Littauer Nursing Home for the past three years.
At one time, Mr. Stangle was employed at the General Electric Company in Schenectady. He later worked as a service manager at Hosner Motors, Amsterdam, for 22 years.
Subsequently, he operated a Gulf service station on Lyons Street in Amsterdam for several years. Later, Mr. Stangle worked as a salesman at the former Tesiero Chevrolet in Amsterdam and lastly at Jim Longwell Chevrolet, Inc.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served in the Pacific Theater.
Mr. Stangle was of the Catholic Faith.
He was a former member of the Kenyetto Fire Company.
Mr. Stangle enjoyed woodworking and doing outdoor work at his home.
He was married to the former Mildred Morehouse Stangle on June 25, 1938. She died on June 3, 1972.
Survivors include 2 sons, Leonard R. Stangle and Leon G. Stangle, both of Amsterdam; a daughter, Lori J. Piska of Broadalbin; a sister, Margaret Eaton of Broadalbin; 6 grandchildren, 8 greatgrandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 9 a.m. at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home Inc., 38 West Main Street, Broadalbin with the Rev. Anthony Gulley officiating. Burial will be in the Broadalbin Union Rural Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Sunday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Heart Association, in care of the funeral home.
Erwin Hoffmann Jr.
Erwin Hoffmann Jr., 78, of Lee Avenue, Rexford, died Friday, at his home.
Born in Germany, March 24, 1925, he was the son of Erwin and Margarete Hoffmann Sr. He came to the United States in 1931 and was a graduate of Gloversville High School and Canton College of Technology. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theatre aboard the USS Ticonderoga.
Mr. Hoffmann was a draftsman/designer for Knolls Atomic Power Lab in Niskayuna for 36 years, retiring in 1985.
Survivors: His wife of 54 years, Mildred Schermerhorn Hoffmann; two sons, Daniel Hoffmann of Hamden, Connecticut and Timothy Hoffmann of Guilford, Connecticut; a brother, Roy Hoffmann of Gloversville; three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests you do something kind for a needy person or animal in memory of Erwin.

Nancy Lynn Angell
Nancy Lynn Angell, 55, of Gloversville, who was a recent resident of Amsterdam, passed away peacefully at home on Sept. 29, 2002, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born November 27, 1946, in Cleveland, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Alexandrine "Connie" Angell of Gloversville and the late William R. Angell Jr. of Flint, Michigan. Nancy graduated from Gloversville High School in 1964 and earned her degree as a registered nurse from Marcy State Hospital School of Nursing in 1967. She was employed at the Baptist Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Scotia. She was previously employed at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital and Lexington Center in Gloversville.
She is survived by a very special aunt, Eleanor "Lynn" Kindar of Amsterdam; a brother, William R. Angell III and his wife, Carolyn, of Camden, NY; two nieces, Deborah Collins and her husband, Mark, of Camden, NY and Kristine Contento-Angell and her husband, Jason, of Maroochydore, Australia; two nephews, William R. Angell IV and his wife, Jennifer, of Painted Post, NY, and Thomas J. Angell of Phoenix, Arizona; as well as one great-niece, Emily K. Collins of Camden, NY; several cousins also survive Nancy.
Nancy is also survived by many caring friends who went to extreme lengths to make Nancy's last days happy and peaceful. Nancy's love of animals, especially cats and horses, was shared by many, especially Beverly Colby and Valerie Petrucelli, who were always there to help Nancy and her family. Sandy Green, Mai-Lis Day, Nancy Heath, Donna Berggren and Sue Tomlinson fulfilled Nancy's final wish to see and enjoy the ocean with a recent trip to Newport, Rhode Island.
A deeply religious person, Nancy's kindness and dedication to care for people went beyond her professional nursing duties, for she was compassionate and generous in her care of family members, most recently for her aunt, as well as six years caring for her terminally ill mother. Nancy's family extends special appreciation to her cousin, Katra Kindar and her husband, Tom Tintle, of Shelburne, Vermont, who spent many days caring for Nancy. Her family also conveys sincere gratitude to Liz Kindar for her steadfast support of Nancy and her family throughout this time.
A memorial Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at 11 a.m. at St. Casimir's Church, 260 E. Main St., Amsterdam. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, consider a donation in Nancy's memory to SPCA, 1007 Route 5S, Amsterdam, NY 12010 or to Community Hospice of Amsterdam, Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY 12010. Interment will be in St. Casimir's Cemetery at the convenience of her family.

James B. Melita

James B. Melita, 79, of Third Avenue, Gloversville, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, at Samuel Stratton VA Medical Center after a long illness.
He was born March 23, 1925, in Johnstown, NY, the son of Thomas and Marry Manino Melita. He graduated from Johnstown High School.
He then served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1945 in the Medical Infantry, where he received the Asiatic-Pacific Medal with bronze battle stars, Bronze Star Medal, Philippines Liberation Medal, Victory Medal and American Campaign Medal.
He worked a short time in accounting for General Electric, Schenectady.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and the Johnstown VFW Post 510.
He is survived by four brothers, Joe T. Melita of Johnstown, Anthony Melita of Gloversville, Salvatore Melita of Johnstown and Tom Melita of Portsmouth, N.H.; one sister, Domenica "Minnie" Melita of Johnstown; nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Mass of Christian burial will be on Friday at a time to be announced at the Immaculate Conception Church with Rev James Fitzmaurice, pastor, as celebrant. Calling hours will be Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to JAVAC or a charity of one's choice.
Julia Whitaker
Julia Whitaker, 53, of 218 Keyser Lake Road, Dolgeville, passed away on Monday, September 30, 2002, at Little Falls Hospital.
She was born March 22, 1949, in Queens, NY, the daughter of the late Thurman and Freda (Kasmann) Whitaker.
Julia attended the Lexington Day Treatment Center in Oppenheim.
Survivors include her sister, Barbara Coelho of California; and many friends and staff of the Lexington Center.
In keeping with Julia's wishes, cremation took place under the direction of the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home. Friends and relatives are invited to attend a memorial service on Friday, October 4, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. at the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville, NY, with Reverend Michael Yezierski, pastor of St. Johnsville United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will take place at Evergreen Memorial Park in Mercel, California, at the convenience of the family. Visitation will be on Friday at 10:00 a.m. until the time of the services at the funeral home.
Walter L. Ashley Jr.
Walter L. Ashley Jr., 70, of Eaker Road, town of Palatine, died September 27, 2003 at his home following a long illness. Born in Burlington Flats, NY, March 24, 1933, the son of Walter and Myrtle Lucey Ashley. Mr. Ashley was an auto stacker working several years at Karg Brothers, retiring in 1991. On August 24, 1957, he married Pauline Gage, who survives. Also survived by his son, David W. Ashley of Stone Arabia; daughters, Julia Sutton LPN of Pleasant Lake, NY and Joyce L. Romaine of Stratford, NY; a special granddaughter, Tonya L. Liddle; three granddaughters; one grandson; and four great grandchildren; a sister, Beatrice Blanchard of Johnstown; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four sisters; and two brothers. A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 4, 2003, 2 p.m. at the Amico Funeral Home, 150 South Main Street, Gloversville. Cremation was at the Leatherstocking Crematory, Cherry Valley.
Eugene Spritzer

Eugene Spritzer, age 90, of Gloversville, died early Tuesday morning at the Albany Medical Center, Albany, NY. Born November 23, 1912 in Gloversville, he was the son of Thomas and Julia Wolvek Shpritzer.
Mr. Spritzer, a life long area resident, was a graduate of Gloversville High School and later Pratt University with a chemical engineering degree. In 1999, he retired from Organic Dye of R.I. Eugene will be remembered by many as the man that forever rid the city of hydrogen sulfide odors produced by local leather factories. Not only was Eugene at the forefront of the leather industry, he was also an accomplished jazz musician, playing locally and abroad. While best known for playing with the Molson Men, Eugene continued to enjoy entertaining guests and the public up until this past August. Recently reflecting upon his music he stated, "We don't play what we want, we play what they want to hear."
Mr. Spritzer was a member of the Knesseth Israel Synagogue, past president of the B'nai Brith and a past president of the Adirondack Tanners Assn.
On November 19, 1939, Mr. Spritzer married the former Lillian Fine. She predeceased him on April 12, 2001. He was also predeceased by two sons, Donald and Gary Spritzer; and one brother, Philip Shpritzer.
He is survived by one sister, Ruth Sher of Wisconsin; six grandchildren, Marc, Jordan, Jason, Elliot, Alexander and Maxwell; and one niece, Barbara Tinsley of California.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Knesseth Israel Synagogue, 34 East Fulton St., Gloversville, NY. Interment will take place at Knesseth Israel Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Knesseth Israel Synagogue.
Kevin A. Brown
Mr. Kevin A. Brown, 40, of Rumford, Rhode Island, a former Johnstown resident, passed away unexpectedly at his home on October 13, 2003. He was born Feb. 3, 1963 in Gloversville, N.Y., the son of G. Russell Brown of S. Glens Falls, N.Y. and Janet S. Ake of Leander, Texas. He attended Johnstown schools and received his GED in Florida. Mr. Brown was an antiques dealer in N.Y., Mass., and lastly in Providence, R.I. from 1996 until the present. He was a waiter and maitre d' in many restaurants on the East Coast. He was also known as an art restorer and framer and was an active landscaper. Mr. Brown had an avid interest in skiing and horse back riding.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Brown is survived by two sisters, Karen M. Sprung and Deborah Brown-Peterson, both of Gloversville, N.Y.; a brother, Bruce R. Brown of Panama City, Fla.; his maternal grandmother, Wava B. Cacia of Anaheim, Calif.; aunts; uncles; nieces; nephews and cousins. Mr. Brown is also survived by his partner, Michael Meller of Providence, R.I. Cremation took place in Rhode Island, where a memorial service was held Saturday, Oct. 18.
