Floyd LaVeck
HERKIMER — Floyd LaVeck, 86, of Folts Home (Claxton Manor) and formerly of 416 Margaret St., Herkimer, passed away on Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at St. Luke's Hospital, New Hartford.
He was born Sept. 19, 1914, in Fulton, the son of the late Louis and Luella (Sharpe) LaVeck. Floyd was educated in Brooklyn schools and also attended college.
His marriage to Katherine Vicini took place in Mohawk. Mrs. LaVeck preceded him in death on March 31, 1992.
Mr. LaVeck was an Army veteran, serving in Panama, where he was a marksmanship instructor.
Floyd was last employed at General Electric in Utica as a technician.
Being mechanically and electrically inclined, Floyd would tinker with all types of machinery and fixtures until they were repaired correctly. In leisure he enjoyed reading and listening to music.
Survivors include his son, Pastor Robert LaVeck and wife Amy of Gouverneur; two grandchildren, Kristin and Daniel LaVeck; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by three sisters, Luella, Lumilla and Myrtle.
Memorial service will be held on Friday, June 29, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Folts Home Chapel, 104 N.  Washington St., Herkimer with his son, Pastor Robert LaVeck, officiating. There are no calling hours. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Holleran-Enea Funeral Home, 220 N.  Washington St., Herkimer. All memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice. Envelopes will be available at the memorial service or at the funeral home.

Robert E. Ashe
UTICA/LITTLE FALLS — Mr. Robert E. Ashe, age 86 of Utica and a Little Falls native passed away on Thursday morning, November 15, 2001 in Charles T. Sitrin Health Care Center, New Hartford.
Mr. Ashe was born on December 16, 1914 in Little Falls the son of the late Michael and Bridget (Murphy) Ashe. He received his education in Little Falls graduating with the St. Mary's Academy "Class of 1934." He moved to the Utica area in 1963. Robert married the former Elizabeth Talaba on February 28, 1937 in  Pennsylvania. He was last employed as manager of the former American Stores Company (Acme Markets), which were located throughout the Mohawk Valley. He served the company with 42 years of dedicated service. Mr. Ashe will be remembered as a family man who always tended to the needs of his family before his own.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 64 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Ashe; his children including a son Robert M. Ashe and wife Karen of Wausau, Wisconsin and Janet Winig and husband Robert of Gloversville; five cherished grandchildren: Scott, Cory and Nicole Winig, Jennifer and Bridget Ashe; several nieces and nephews. Also surviving is a sister-in-law Betty (Willy) Ashe of Utica; in-laws, Sam Talaba and wife Irma of Little Falls and Tina Stransky of East Herkimer. Preceding Robert in death were two sisters, Mildred Ashe and Elizabeth Simmons. and four brothers, James, John, Thomas, and Willard Ashe.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of the Enea Funeral Home. A funeral service will commence at 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday morning, November 20, 200l from the Enea Funeral Home, 24 West Monroe St., Little Falls where prayer will be offered. A memorial mass will begin Tuesday at 11 a.m. the Holy Family Parish Church, corner of E. Main and John Street s, Little Falls with the Rev. Charles R. Celeste, Pastor officiating. Interment will take place in Holy Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Little Falls. Kindly consider memorial contributions to the Alzheimer Association and envelopes will be available at the funeral parlor for this purpose. Helen S.Pettengill
LITTLE FALLS — Helen S. Pettengill, 82, formerly of 277 Flint Ave., Little Falls, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001 at Little Falls Hospital. She was born on Dec. 6, 1918 in Little Falls, the daughter of the late John and Sophia (Roy) Salek. She was educated at Little Falls High School. She was united in marriage to Bayard Pettengill on Feb. 4, 1961 at the First Presbyterian Church, Little Falls by the Rev. Harold J. Thompson. Mr. Pettengill predeceased her on June 29, 1968. She is survived by her daughter, Ethel McKusick and her husband Thurston of Mohawk; a stepdaughter, Jean Rice and her husband Gerald of Little Falls; two stepsons, Frederick Pettengill of Dolgeville and Bayard Pettengill, Jr. and his wife Liz of Palatine Bridge; 16 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Friday, Nov. 16 at 11 a.m. from the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Albany Street, Little Falls with Rev. Dr. Steven A. Scarcia, rector, officiating. Interment will take place in Holy Spirit Polish National Cemetery, town of Herkimer. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Little Falls on Friday, Nov. 16 from 9-11 a.m. and to attend the funeral services to follow. Arrangements are by the Chapman-Moser Funeral Home, Inc., 42 N. Ann St., Little Falls. It is the wish of the family that contributions in memory of Mrs. Pettengill be considered to the Emmanuel Episcopal Church or to a charity of one's choice. Envelopes are available at the Chapman-Moser Funeral Home, Inc. for this purpose.

David Marxe
ST. JOHNSVILLE — David Marxe, 47, of 107 Cromer Road, St. Johnsville, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001 at Little Falls Hospital. He was born May 25, 1953 in Long Island, the son of Ira and Ruth (Weiser) Marxe. He is survived by his parents and two sisters, Paula and Francine, all of New York City, and many special friends at the Lexington Center. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at noon at the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville with Reverend R.W. Williams, pastor of Mt. Valley Hospice officiating. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, Nov. 13 from 11 a.m. until the time of the services. All memorial contributions may be made to Community Animal Programs. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Ruth Ann Bush Perry
MORRISTOWN — Ruth Ann Bush Perry, 95, of the United Helpers-Canton Nursing Home, formerly of Morristown and Dolgeville, died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2001 at the nursing home. Graveside services were held Thursday, Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. at the Dolgeville Cemetery, Dolgeville, with Rev. Gertrude Ortleib officiating. Arrangements were by the Fox-McLellan Funeral Home, Ogdensburg. Surviving are two sons, Lawrence Bush of Canton, and Gary Bush of Fly Creek; one daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Shirley) Schuyler of Dolgeville; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and two stepdaughters, Marion  Taylor and Dolores Wagner, both of Brier Hill. Mrs. Perry was born Nov. 27, 1905 in Clear lake, Wisc., the daughter of Alonzo and Katie Padget Palmer. She married Thomas Bush and he died in 1965. She later married Irving Perry and he died in 1992.

Cora Victoria Jaikin
DOLGEVILLE — Mrs. Cora Victoria Jaikin, 80, of Apt. No. 5, Parkside Courts, 53 South Main St., Dolgeville, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001 in Little Falls Hospital. She was born on Sept. 12, 1921 in Canada, daughter of James D. and Eva (Evans) Strait and came to this area with her family at the age of five. Cora was educated in rural schools in the town of Salisbury. Her marriage to Peter G. Jaikin, Sr. took place in Salisbury Center in 1939. Mr. Jaikin predeceased her on Jan. 26. 1977. Surviving are her sons and their wives, Frank and Evelyn Jaikin of Salisbury, Peter G. and Ruth Jaikin Jr. of Dolgeville, James and Artimisha Jaikin of Dolgeville, and Acee and Marie Jaikin of Stratford; her daughters and their husbands, Linda and David Dykeman of Dolgeville, Annabelle and Stanley Hayes of Florida, Mary and Harold Mosher of Amsterdam, Eva Marie and Leland Carpenter, Jr. of Florida; her sister, Eva Strait of Canajoharie; her brothers, George Strait of Dolgeville, James Strait of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Norman Strait of Jacksonville, Fla.; 34 grandchildren, 53 great-children, and nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 22 at 1 p.m. in the Roberts-Buck Funeral Home, 3 Faville Ave., Dolgeville. Mr. Rodney Congdon of the Williams Memorial Church will officiate. Burial will be in Curtis Corners Cemetery. Calling hours are Saturday morning from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorials may be made to the Central Association for the Blind or the Dolgeville Ambulance Corps. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Helena M. (Steele) Kelly 1914-2001
HERKIMER/CONNECTICUT — Mrs. Helena M. (Steele) Kelly, age 87, of the Southington Care Center, 45 Meriden Ave., Southington, Conn., and a former Herkimer and Little Falls resident, passed away on Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at that center.
Helena was born on Aug. 23, 1914, in Little Falls, a daughter of the late Harry and Margaret (McDonnell) Steele and received her education in Little Falls. She lived the greater part of her life in Herkimer and Little Falls areas. She married Bernard Kelly who preceded her in death in 1988. Her last employment was with J.C. Penny Co. in Albany where she worked as a sales clerk. She at one time was employed at Helmont Mills in St. Johnsville as well as the J.C. Penny Company in Little Falls.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Bernard H. "Pete" Kelly and wife Jeanne of Annville, Pa., and Dr. Thomas F. Kelly and wife Karen of Cheshire, Conn.; a daughter, Beverly Grady and husband James of Candor, N.Y.; two sisters, Margaret Legg and husband Walter of Fla., and Shirley Mushen and husband Don of Central Square, N.Y.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws including Paul Kelly and wife Betty. Preceding her in death was a brother Donald Steele and two sisters, Agnes Moody and Dorothy Gartner.
Friends and relatives may visit with the family and pay their respects at the Holleran-Enea Funeral Home, 220 N.  Washington St., Herkimer on Wednesday evening, Dec. 19, 2001, from 6-8 p.m.
Helena's funeral will commence on Thursday morning, Dec. 20, 2001, at 9:30 a.m. from the Holleran-Enea Funeral Home, Herkimer, where a prayer will be offered and 10 a.m. from St. Francis de Sales Church, North Bellinger St., Herkimer, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Mark Cunningham, pastor. Procession will follow to Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer where Helena will be laid to rest next to her husband Bernard.

Sophie Rzeszot
ROME — Sophie S. Rzeszot, 78, formerly of Vernon and currently of Rome, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at the University Hospital in Syracuse. She was born in Yorkville on Dec. 3, 1923, the daughter of Albert and Catherine Piorkowski Jezowski, and attended New York Mills and Utica schools. On Oct. 18, 1947, she married John Rzeszot in Sacred Heart of Jesus Polish National Catholic Church in New York Mills. A marriage of love, respect, caring and sharing for over 49 years until his death on March 18, 1997. Her survivors included a daughter, Cathy Rzeszot and her friend Douglas Prosser of Rome; two sons, Edward and his wife Carol Rzeszot of Dolgeville, and Chester Rzeszot and his fiancιe Dorothy Wickham of Canastota; a brother, Walter Jezowski of Utica; two sisters, Mary and her husband John Danieluk of Yorkville, and Helen Mazurowski of Utica; and three grandchildren, Rachelle and her husband David Alig, Randi and Misuk Rzeszot, and Ryan Rzeszot. Also included is her great-grandson, Christopher; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws. Funeral services will be held on Thursday morning at 9 a.m. at the Kobielski-Kowalczyk Funeral Home, 284 Main St., New York Mills, and at 10 a.m. at All Saints Parish Polish National Catholic Church in Rome. Relatives and friends may call on Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart of Jesus Polish National Catholic Cemetery, New Hartford. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the All Saints Parish Polish National Catholic Church, 801 Hickory St., Rome, NY 13440. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Ernest Claude Niles
DOLGEVILLE — Mr. Ernest Claude Niles, 88, of 19 S. Main St., died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at Little Falls Hospital. He was born on Jan. 23, 1914, in Fly Creek, a son of the late Claude and Bessie (Burns) Niles. Ernie graduated from Ilion High School class of 1932. Survivors include two nephews and their wives, James and Charlotte Robotham of Dolgeville, and William and Patricia Robotham of Mohawk; and one niece, Betty Backus of Ilion. There will be no calling hours. A service will be scheduled for the family in the spring. Arrangements are under the direction of the Roberts-Buck Funeral Home, 3 Faville Ave., Dolgeville.

Alyce M. Kardash
ST. JOHNSVILLE — Alyce M. Kardash, 81, of 1737 Mill Road, St. Johnsville, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2002, at Little Falls Hospital.
She was born Nev. 15, 1920, in Nescopeck, Pa., the daughter of the late Karl and Mary (Breisch) Kaufman.
Her marriage to Stanley M. Kardash took place on Jan. 27, 1940, at St. James Church in Fort Plain by Rev. theodore J. Themm.
Mrs. Kardash was last employed at the St. Johnsville Central School District. At one time she worked for the former Swank Diner in St. Johnsville.
Alyce was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Fort Plain.
Survivors include her husband, Stanley; a son, Tevin Kardash and wife Anne Buffington of Little Falls, Karen Pollock and husband Paul of Virginia, and Sherry Spartano and husband Carlo of California; four grandchildren, Paige Spartano, Noelle Pollock and Camille and Adam Kardash.
She was predeceased by a sister.
In keeping with Alyce's wishes cremation will take place under the direction of the Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville. There are no calling hours. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family. An on-line sympathy note may be sent to the family at www.eneafuneralhomes.com.
