Archer S. Drew Jr.

Died: Saturday, January 15, 2011

Archer S. Drew Jr., a longtime resident of Smithtown, passed away Jan. 15 at the age of 81.

Archer (Archie) grew up in St. Albans, Queens, and moved to South Ozone Park when he married. He and his wife, Thelma (Cooper) of Corona, Queens, subsequently lived in Springfield Gardens, for several years. He and his family moved to Smithtown in the early '60s.

Archer was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran. He later worked for the U.S. government and retired from the federal government, Department of Defense, with 30 years of service. He was the recipient of several meritorious awards.

He was considered by some to be the bionic man having had both hips replaced as well as both knees replaced and a back disc fused. Still he managed to umpire (USSSA) a number of years, for Smithtown's many softball leagues. Well regarded in this capacity, Archer was known as a knowledgeable and fair umpire — he would throw anyone out of the game, if so warranted, including spectators.

As a sports lover, he was a participant as well as an observer and an instructor. Whether it was racquetball, or volleyball, he was a champion. While president of the Smithtown Majors Bowling League, he taught youth bowling sessions for the town Recreation Department, and participated in the parent and child leagues with each of his children. He played basketball and softball for St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, in the town adult leagues and then coached and managed teams in both sports for the church.

An active member of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, Archer served on the altar, and was also a head usher and a counter as well as president of the church's Bowling League, and the Couples Club. He was a longtime member of the Smithtown Senior Golf Association, the one sport that he could not claim as a "champion" although he did have a hole in one and managed to win a number of tournaments with great prizes!

Archer was a delight to know and beloved by many. Endearingly called "crabby" by his oldest daughter, Joanne, the term caught on and others affectionately termed him the "old crab" or "grouchy" as some lovingly called him. His activities included membership in NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), NARFE (National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association), OIC (Opportunities Industrialization Centers) and a volunteer with SCMLK (Suffolk County Martin Luther King Jr. Commission).

Archer is mourned by his wife of close to 60 years, Thelma; sons, Richard Michael (Maria Grace), Kenneth Edward (Mary Ann); and daughters, Sheryln Liane (Christopher Allen McKittrick), Kimberly Terese (Charles Timothy Council). He was predeceased by two daughters, baby Karin Elizabeth and Joanne Michelle (Johnson).

In addition to his children, he also leaves his loving grandchildren: Felicia (William Patterson), Ariana (Ed Mowton), Tabitha Pearl (Johnson), Brittany Ann and Drew Archer (McKittrick), Erick Jamel and Jade Elizabeth Michelle (Council); great-grandchildren, Quadarius, and Santina (Patterson); and a host of beloved in-laws, many family and numerous friends.

Donations can be made to: St. Andrew's Building Fund, 30 Brooksite Drive, Smithtown, NY 11787; or to American Heart Association, Long Island Region, 125 East Bethpage Road, Plainview, NY 11803.

Reposing at The Branch Funeral Home, 190 East Main St., Smithtown, NY 11787, visiting will be held Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 22 and 23, from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm.

A funeral Mass will be held on Monday, Jan. 24, at 10 am at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, Smithtown.

Interment to follow at Calverton National Cemetery.

Arrangements entrusted to The Branch Funeral Home of Smithtown.

Shirley Schievella

Died: Friday, January 14, 2011
Age: 83

In Memoriam

Mrs. Shirley Schievella died on Jan. 14, 2011 after a long illness, at the age of 83. Shirley was well known within the Port Jefferson community, where she had lived with Dr. Pat Schievella since their marriage in 1965. At that time, Pat was teaching at Port Jefferson High School and was introduced to Shirley through her daughter Susan, one of Pat's English class students.

Shirley practiced law as a sole practitioner here in Port Jefferson after her graduation from Hofstra University in 1981. Her law degree was the culmination of some 10 years of tertiary educational qualifications, including an associate's degree at Suffolk County Community College in 1974 and a bachelor's degree at SUNY Stony Brook in 1978. During this period Shirley also worked as an intern at Nassau/Suffolk Law Services. Shirley's academic achievements were very important to her; she had graduated from high school in 1944 but had to defer further education due to an early, wartime marriage and subsequent responsibility as a sole parent for raising two children.

Shirley's law practice focused on civil matters, including wills, matrimonial disputes, property and child custody issues. For many years she shared legal premises with Edward J. DiNunzio Esq. in Port Jefferson, to whom she was always very grateful for legal mentoring. One of Shirley's legal highlights was her recognition as Pro Bono Lawyer of the Month by the Suffolk County Bar Association in December 1998 for the almost 200 hours she devoted to Pro Bono Project clients.

Shirley's heritage included an Irish mother, with whom she was extremely close. Among the many highlights of her personal life were the wonderful experiences she shared with her daughters Andrea and Susan on their six trips to Ireland.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Pasqual S. Schievella, and their daughter, Andrea Schievella. From her first marriage, she is also survived by her children, Susan Evans and Dan Evans; her granddaughters, Jenna, Kylie and Amanda; and her great-grandchildren, Zoe, Sam, Zachary, Emma, Julia, Max and Madeleine. Through her marriage to Pat, she is survived by three stepchildren, Dale Junco, Randy Schievella and Patricia Ellis; five grandchildren, Daphne, Tim, Sara, Lauren and Matthew; and one great-grandchild, Garrett. Shirley will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Arrangements were entrusted to Moloney's Port Jefferson Station Funeral Home. Interment will be held at Washington Memorial Park Cemetery, Mount Sinai.
