Elwood O. Mowers

PHELPS - Mr. Elwood O. Mowers, 91, of Seneca Castle, died peacefully Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003 at his daughter's home on Case Road.
Friends called at the Cheney Funeral Home in Phelps. A Masonic service was held at 7 p.m. and an Order of the Eastern Star service was at 7:15 p.m. at the funeral home. Calling hours were Tuesday, Dec. 30 at Seneca Castle United Methodist Church. Funeral services followed in the church with the Rev. Lynn Spence officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven cemetery in Phelps.
Memorial contributions may be made to the House of John, 14 Spring St, Clifton Springs 14432.
Elwood was born Dec. 16, 1912, in West Lyden, the son of the late Arthur and Sadie Orman Mowers. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Union 832, working in construction until he retired in 1974.
He married Helen Skuse in 1938, raised four children and lived in Seneca Castle for 60 years. Elwood was a member of the Grange for 74 years, an active member of Garoga-Sincerity Lodge 200 F&AM;, the Royal Garoga Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star; and the Seneca Castle United Methodist Church. He also enjoyed the outdoors and loved hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his three daughters, Janet (David) Whaley of Tennessee, Barbara Mattoon of Phelps and Mary (John) Sherman of Seneca Castle; a son, David (Kathleen) Mowers of Phelps; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a nephew, Harold (Carolyn) Willson of Clifton Springs.
He was predeceased by his wife, Helen Mowers, who died in 2001; a brother, Ray Mowers; a sister, Lydia Willson; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Mattoon; and a son-in-law, Charles Mattoon.

Harold Lewis Peck

COCOA, Fla. - Harold Lewis Peck, 85, passed away Sunday, Jan 4, 2004 in Rockledge, Fla.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004 at the Seneca Castle United Methodist Church to which memorial contributions may be directed.
Mr. Peck was born Feb. 6, 1918 in Phelps and was a World War II Army veteran.
He is survived by is significant other, Shirley A. Peck; a daughter Cathy (Don) Woodburn of Curtis, Neb.; two sons, John (Joan) Peck of Laingsburg, Mich. and Roger (Cindy) Peck of Akron, Ohio; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Page Peck.

Sina VanHanegen

NEWARK - Sina VanHanegen, 88, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004 at the Newark-Wayne Community Hospital.
Family and friends called Wednesday, Jan 7 at the Norman L. Waterman Funeral Home in Newark, where a funeral service followed with the Rev. Timothy Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Sodus Rural cemetery in the spring.
In memory of Mrs. VanHanegen, please make contributions to the Newark-Arcadia Volunteer Ambulance, P.O. Box 680, Newark 14513.
Mrs. VanHanegen was born Feb. 6, 1915, in MacDougall, the daughter of Marinus and Matilda Mahler Sorensen. She was a graduate of Waterloo High School. Mrs. VanHanegen was a member of Park Presbyterian Church, the Newark Garden Club, Antique Club of the Finger Lakes, American Legion Auxiliary Post 286 of Newark and the Arcadia Senior Citizens.
She will be missed by her stepchildren, Gerald (Lucy) VanHanegen of Fairville, Sylvia (Don) Hanagan of Newark, Abraham (Margaret) and Raymond (Barbara) VanHanegen, both of Clifton Springs; and Sandra (Gary) Decker of Phelps; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including Danial Decker; sister, Emma Lind of Waterloo; a sister-in-law, Gladys Sorensen of Waverly; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Harvey Filkins, in 1966; her second husband, John VanHanegen, in 1992; four brothers; and two sisters.

"Nan" L. VanHout

CLIFTON SPRINGS - "Nan" L. VanHout, 64, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, Jan 6, 2004.
Friends called Thursday, Jan. 8 at McGuire/Hargrave & Murphy Funeral Home in Palmyra, where her funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 9. Burial will be in Machpelah cemetery in the spring.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.
She is survived by her family; mother, Eleanor Hoskins of Palmyra; four children, Sherie (Scott) Laraby of Phelps, Theresa (Salvatore) Gentile of Geneva, Roni (Rob) Hall of Geneva and Troy (Hillary) VanHout of Phelps; 12 loving grandchildren; three brothers, Allan (Myrreah) White of Palmyra, Wayne (Elaine) Sampson of Arizona, and James (Gloria) Sampson of Clifton Springs; and several nieces and nephews.

Dawn E. Bliven

AVON - Dawn E. Bliven, 38, a resident of the Avon IRA, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004 at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville.
Visitation was Tuesday, Jan. 13 at the Rector-Hicks Funeral Home in Geneseo. Funeral services were Wednesday, Jan. 14 at the funeral home, with the Rev. Neil Frood, of the York United Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Temple Hill cemetery in Geneseo.
Memorials may be made to VSAC, c/o Avon IRA, 107 E. Main St., Avon, 14414.
Dawn was born Feb. 9, 1965, in Clifton Springs, the daughter of Charles and Judy Wakely Bliven. She has worked as a professional shopper for the Avon IRA.
She is survived by her mother, Judy Bliven of Geneseo; father, Charles Bliven of Chaumont; grandmothers, Vivian Wakely of Geneseo and Mildred Hubbard of Phelps; two sisters, Jody (Robert) Nellis of Piffard and Jamie Bliven of Chaumont; special friend, Sybil Hunt; her family at the Avon IRA; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Edward R. Clement

MANCHESTER - Edward R. Clement, 72, husband, father, and grandfather, was received by the Lord peacefully Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004 at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Canandaigua.
Friends called Tuesday, Jan. 13 at the Robert L. Yost Funeral Home in Palmyra. Private graveside services will be in Chapman cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Canandaigua VA Hospital, 33A Geriatric Clinic, 400 Fort Hill Ave., Canandaigua, 14424, or to the Hungtington Disease Family Center, 919 Westfall Road, Building C. Suite 220, Rochester, 14618.
A devoted family man and outdoors man, Ed spent 32 years of service with the Thruway at Manchester. Ed was a national member of the American Legion and enjoyed cheering for the Buffalo Bills, New York Yankees and Syracuse Orangemen.
The Army flag was flown at the funeral home in honor of Ed's service to his country with the Army Tank Corp in the Korean War.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Joan S. Clement; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Kim Clement of Palmyra; two grandsons, Cody and Dan; brother, Eldon (Linda) Clement of Phelps; mother-in-law, Gert Shoemaker; brother and sister-in-law, David and Sande Shoemaker; aunt, Anne Wieand of Perkinsville; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and many friends.
He was predeceased by his sisters, Ruth Fingar and Anne Stevens.

Earl F. Dewey

MANCHESTER - Earl F. Dewey, 85, formerly of Phelps, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004 at Strong Memorial Hospital.
There were no prior calling hours. A memorial service was held Saturday, Jan. 17 at the United Church of Phelps.
Mr. Dewey was born in Phelps, graduated from Phelps High School, attended Cornell University and Hobart College and graduated from the Simmons School of Embalming and Mortuary Science in Syracuse.
He was the owner and director of the Dewey Funeral Home in Phelps from 1956 to 1997, an Army veteran of World War II, where he served in France. He was past commander of Phelps American Legion Post, past master of Sincerity Masonic Lodge, Damascus Shrine, Phelps VFW, and was active in Little League Baseball in Phelps. He was sexton at Rest Haven cemetery in Phelps and the Ontario County Funeral Directors Association.
He is survived by three sons, Earl (Julia) Frederick II of Wallingford, Conn., John W. (Mary) of Hershey, Pa. and David H. Dewey of Manchester; several nieces and nephews; and five grandchildren, Mary Abigale, Alden Frame, Eliza Josephine, Emily Louise and Kevin Crittenden Dewey.
He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Ellen, a sister, Jane Hicks; a brother, Leland Dewey.
Arrangement were by Sainsbury Funeral Home in Shortsville.

Russell B. Facer

NEWARK - Russell Buisch Facer, 87, formerly of Pierson Ave., died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004 at the Wayne County Nursing Home.
Family and friends called Sunday, Jan. 11 at the Calvary Church in Newark where a memorial service followed, with the Rev. Larry Humphres officiating. Burial will be in South Lyons cemetery in the spring.

Mr. Facer was born April 23, 1916 in Phelps, son of Arthur and Clara Buisch Facer. A 1933 graduate of Lyons Central School, Mr. Facer was employed by Eastman Kodak in Rochester. He returned to farming when his father, Arthur, died in 1941. He subsequently owned and managed the three-generation Facer Farms from 1941 to 1991.
Mr. Facer served on the local boards of Phelps Cooperative Service, Sterling Cooperative, Wayne County Farm Bureau, Eastgate Youth for Christ, and the Phelps Town Board of Appeals Planning Commission. He was a member of the Eureka Grange for over 55 years, president of the Palmyra local of the Dairymen's League and secretary of the Canning Crops Growers Cooperative Inc. of Wayne County.
Mr. Facer was a founding member of the Wayside Chapel, a worship center for farm laborers which he helped construct in 1954 in the Town of Phelps. He was an active member of the Gideons International and a member of Calvary Church in Newark.
He will be missed by his loving and devoted wife of 65 years, Catherine Evans Facer; three daughters, Marcia (William) Bunnell of California, Nancy (Henry) Abbink of Canandaigua, and Susan (Mark) Facer-Kreidler of Getzville; a son, David Facer of Newark; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Glenn (Mary) Facer of Lyons; and two sisters, Mildred Housel of Florida and Janice Gabrielse of Lyons.
He was predeceased by his sister, Hazel Oakleaf.

Sandra L. Moshier

CLIFTON SPRINGS - Sandra Moshier, 59, of 31 Silver St., passed away Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004 with her family by her side, at Clifton Springs Hospital after a short illness.
Friends called Tuesday, Jan. 13 at the Patrick Funeral Home in Clifton Springs. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Wednesday, Jan 14 at St. Felix Church.
Contributions may be made in Sandra's memory to the Clifton Springs Community Cancer Center or the House of John.
Sandy was born Oct. 28, 1944, in Clifton Springs, the daughter of Carl and Margaret Main and had lived in the area all of her life. She was a homemaker and avid bingo player. Sandy also loved to crochet.
She will be sadly missed by her loving husband of 36 years, Henry "Hank" Moshier; two daughters, Tammy Moshier of Clifton Springs and Mary (Kevin) Williams of Newark; two beautiful granddaughters; brother, Carol (Betty) Main of Clifton Springs; two sisters, Katie Sherman of Canandaigua and Judy (Donald) Foster of Palm Bay, Fla., stepfather, Charles Watts of Gates, N.C.; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
She was predeceased by her father, Carl Main; mother Margaret Main Watts; son, John; and brothers, Stephen and Gary.

Harold "Pat" Peck

SENECA CASTLE - Harold "Pat" Peck, passed away Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004 after a short illness.
A memorial service was held Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004 at the Seneca Castle United Methodist Church. Family greeted friends at the church beginning one hour before the service.
Pat was a lifelong resident of the Town of Phelps until he recently moved to Cocoa, Fla. He was employed at C.M. Nielsen Farm Equipment for several years, and was a long-time instructor at BOCES in Flint until his retirement several years ago.
