Michael Horton

WATERLOO - Michael Horton, 44, of Garden Grove, Calif., a former resident of Waterloo, passed away at his home Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004.
Friends attended a memorial service on Monday, Dec. 6 at the United Church of Phelps.
Memorial contributions may be made to Companion Hospice, 730 Town & Country Road, Orange, CA 92868 or the American Cancer Society, 1400 Winton Road North, Rochester 14620.
He is survived by his parents, Nancy Horton and Ronald (Adonna) Horton; grandmother, Betty Horton; brothers, Scott Horton and Steve (Karen) Horton; stepbrother, Michael (Sue) Reifsteck; stepsisters, Rachel (Joe) Fairman and Andrea (Michael) Knaak; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Mary R. Serven

JUNIUS - Mrs. Mary R. Serven of 1075 Dublin Road, died Monday, Dec. 6 in Geneva General Hospital.
There were no calling hours. A private funeral service will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in the South Lyons cemetery in Lyons.
Memorial contributions may be given to Junius Volunteer Fire Department, Route 318, Waterloo 13165.
Mary was born Oct. 17, 1919, in Lyons, the daughter of Jay P. and Florence Kaiser Shepherd. She was a life resident of the Finger Lakes and worked almost 60 years with her husband, owning and operating the Serven Farms.
She is survived by one son, Ronald M. (Kathy) Serven of Junius; one daughter, Judy Winters of Junius; five grandchildren; one great-grandson; two brothers, Jay Shepherd of Geneva and James Shepherd of Seneca Falls; three sisters, Helen (Charles) Converse of Rose, Doris Cooley of Newark, Eleanor (Frederick) Follette of Phelps; many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Mervin A. Serven; one brother, Edward Shepherd; and two sisters, Betty Jane Shepherd and Florence E. Porter.

Marian P. Smith

CLIFTON SPRINGS - Marion P. Solt Smith, 75, of West Main Street, slipped quietly and peacefully away on Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004 at Demay Nursing Home in Newark.
Family and friends called Wednesday, Dec. 8 at the Halstead-Patrick Funeral Home in Manchester. Funeral services were Thursday, Dec. 9 at the funeral home. Burial was in Riverview cemetery after the services.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of the Finger Lakes or to the United Methodist Church of Clifton Springs.
Marian was born May 10, 1929, in Palmerton, Pa., the daughter of William M. and Ester I. Solt. She grew up in Dunellen, N.J., graduating from Netuchen High School. She worked at Westplex Co. in Manchester for 15 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clifton Springs and the Ontario County Home Bureau.
She is survived by her beloved and devoted husband of 54 years, Garrett; a son, William (Dawn) Smith of Clifton Springs; a daughter, Darlene (Donald) Romeiser of Phelps; and three grandsons, Kurt, Jason and Chris.
She was predeceased by her father in 1941; and her mother in 1991.

Walter D. Bement

NEWARK - Walter Daniel Bement, 81, of West Pearl Street, died unexpectedly at his home on Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004.
Family and friends called Friday, Dec. 17 at the Norman L. Waterman Funeral Home in Newark. A funeral Mass was celebrated Saturday, Dec. 18 at St. Michael Church in Newark, with the Rev. Peter Clifford officiating. Burial followed in East Newark cemetery with full military honors.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Diabetes Association, 20 Ramona St., Rochester 14613; or to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse 13220.
Mr. Bement was born Jan. 1, 1923, the son of Charles and Caroline Lyon Bement in Phelps. He was a member of St. Michael Church in Newark and Carpenters Local 85 in Rochester. Mr. Bement was involved with the construction of the Newark-Wayne Community Hospital at its present location, the Newark High School, the bridge on Route 14 in the village of Lyons and many Wegmans stores in the Rochester area.
The funeral home flew the Navy flag in honor of his service to our country during World War II.
Mr. Bement will be remembered by his sons, Daniel (Kathy) Bement and James (Helen) Bement, both of Newark; three grandchildren Darcie, JW and Kassandra Bement; a brother Richard (Donna) Bement of Old Forge; three sisters, Marion Bement and Geraldine Griner, both of Phelps; and Dorothy Povero of Geneva; many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Bement was predeceased by his wife, Virginia DeWeaver Bement, on Nov. 7, 2004; a brother Robert Bement; and a sister, Margerie Haers.

Rose Felice Goodman

GENEVA - Rose Felice Goodman, 91, of Geneva, passed away Friday, Dec. 10, 2004 at the Geneva Living Center North.
Family and friends called Sunday, Dec. 12 at the Palmisano Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Monday, Dec. 13 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Whitney cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Rose was born March 4, 1913, in Geneva, the daughter of the late Angelo and Angela DiNocco Felice. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She was also an avid card player and enjoyed playing bingo.
She is survived by her son, Kenneth (Iris) Goodman of Highland Park, N.J.; daughters, Marie (John) McGory, Angela (Dominick) Quartaro and Beverly (Fran) Fabrizio, all of Geneva; brothers, Anthony Felice of Canton, Ohio and Joseph Felice of Clifton Springs; sisters, Dena Streppa of Maryland, Gloria King of LaJolla, Calif. and Louise Lisi of Geneva; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her husband, George H. Goodman; brother, Dominick Felice; and sisters, Mary Bertino and Anna Henniger.

Cathy Jo Sherman Gridley

SHORTSVILLE/CLIFTON SPRINGS - Cathy Jo Sherman Gridley, 40, of Shortsville, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004 at Clifton Springs Hospital.
Friends called Tuesday, Dec. 14 at the Patrick Funeral Home in Clifton Springs. Funeral services were Wednesday, Dec. 15 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverview cemetery.
Friends may contribute to the Red Jacket School's Out Program at Manchester-Shortsville Central School, 1506 Route 21, Shortsville 14548; or Finger lakes Community Cancer Center, 6 Coulter Rd., Clifton Springs 14432, in Cathy Jo's memory.
Cathy Jo was born Feb. 26, 1964, in Clifton Springs, the daughter of Charles and Katie Sherman, and had lived in the area all her life. She was employed by Unisys of Farmington.
Cathy Jo enjoyed antiques, crocheting and following her children's sports. She was a loving wife, mother, daughter and sister. Her boys were her greatest love in life.
"Mother, when I think of you, I remember the warmth of your eyes, and the beauty that blooms like a rose every time you smile. Mom, I Love You."
She is survived by her loving husband, Gary Gridley of Shortsville; three sons, Andrew and Chad Shafer and Joseph Gridley, all at home; her mother, Katie Sherman of Canandaigua; three sisters, Brenda (Tim) Litts of Clifton Springs, Vicky (Charles) Maslyn of Clifton Springs, Karen (Fred) Ireland of Phelps; aunts, uncles and many cousins; and her extended family at Unisys.
She was predeceased by her father, Charles, in 1991.

Joseph Mattoon Jr.

PHELPS - Joseph Mattoon Jr., 79, of 1660 Route 488, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004 at the Geneva Living Center North.
There were no prior calling hours. Friends attended a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, Dec. 15 at St. Francis Church in Phelps, with the Rev. Thomas Mull officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Joe was born Feb. 11, 1925, in Clifton Springs, the son of Joseph Sr. and Lucy Scherbyn Mattoon. He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Phelps American Legion Seeley B. Parish Post 457. Joe was a member of the Big M Game Club and the Buckhorn Sportsmen's Club.
He was a master mechanic of heavy equipment for the Operating Engineers Local Union 832 in Rochester.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Mattoon of Phelps; two sons, Joseph John III and Michael Francis, both of Phelps; three daughters, Cynthia Mattoon of Billings, Mont.; Judith Ann (Frank) Sibio of Clay and Mary Jo (David) Shackleton of Geneva; two sisters, Theresa (Lyle) Baker of Clifton Springs and Mary Ann Burm of Newark; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Charles and William Mattoon; and a grandson, Joshua Mattoon.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Cheney Funeral Home in Phelps.

Michael "Jumbo" Rush

CLIFTON SPRINGS - Michael "Jumbo" Rush, 87, a Pearl Harbor survivor, of Stephens Street, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004.
Friends called Friday, Dec. 17 at the Patrick Funeral Home in Clifton Springs. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Saturday, Dec. 18 at St. Felix Church in Clifton Springs. Burial will be in St. Agnes cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Phelps American Legion in Michael's memory.
Michael was born Nov. 25, 1917, in Manchester, the son of Thomas and Mary Rush. He had lived in the area all of his life. He was a World War II military survivor of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Michael served in Germany and France with the Anti-aircraft Division of the Army from 1941 to 1945.
He was a member of the Phelps American Legion, the Clifton Springs VFW and the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. His greatest love was telling his grandchildren and great-grandchildren war stories.
Michael is survived by his loving wife, Rita, of Clifton Springs; five daughters, Pat (Mike) Piepoli of Maryland; Kathy (Tom) Bankert of Phelps, Deborah (John) Marr of Palmyra, Chris (Mark) Rush of Maryland; and Michele (Kevin) Turner of Clifton Springs; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Rush of Manchester and Kate Howell of Canandaigua; and several nieces and nephews.
Michael was predeceased by his son, 1st Sgt. Thomas Rush; and a daughter, Laurie.

Mary E. Speck

CLIFTON SPRINGS - Mary E. Speck, 84, formerly of the Spa Apartments, Clifton Springs, passed away Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004 at the Seneca Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Waterloo, where she had been a resident since 1993.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Wednesday, Dec. 15 at St. Felix Church in Clifton Springs.
Mary was born Oct. 4, 1920, and had lived in Geneva prior to moving to Clifton Springs. She was retired from International Paper Co. in Geneva and was a member of St. Felix Church.
Mary is survived by many loving friends.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Eacker Funeral Home in Phelps.

Winfred E. Abplanalp

PHELPS - Winfred E. Abplanalp, 79, of 26 Orchard Park, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004 at his home.
Friends called Tuesday, Dec. 28 at the Cheney Funeral Home in Phelps. Funeral services were Wednesday, Dec. 29 in the Clifton Springs United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Lynn Spence officiating. Burial will be in Rose cemetery.
It is suggested that memorial donations be made to the Clifton Springs United Methodist Church, 1 E. Main St., Clifton Springs 14432, or Hillman Cancer Center for Melanoma Research, 5115 Centre Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15232 or a charity of one's choice.
Mr. Abplanalp was born Feb. 17, 1925, in Lackawanna, the son of Edward and Irene Blackwell Abplanalp. He grew up on Orchard Park where he and his wife lived until moving to Phelps in 1990.
He served his country in the Navy during World War II in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters as a radar man on Patrol Craft 1175. As a reservist, he was called to serve during the Korean conflict. He trained at Sampson Naval Base. In recent years as an electrician, he helped develop the Naval Museum at Sampson State Park and also served as a guide there. He was a member of the Clifton Springs United Methodist Church, where he was a trustee. He was a member and chaplain of the Seeley B. Parish American Legion Post 457 in Phelps. He was a member of Garoga-Sincerity Lodge 200 F&AM.; Mr. Abplanalp also served on the Phelps Zoning Board. He was active in the Phelps Golden Agers of which he was president. He also served on the Advisory Board of the Ontario County Office for the Aging.
He is survived by his wife, Elinor Malchoff Abplanalp to whom he was married for 53 years. He is also survived by a daughter, Beverly Abplanalp of Lansing; his son, Calvin (Laura) Abplanalp of Bristol; five grandchildren, David, Christine, James, John and Emily Abplanalp; his sister, Dorothy Blanck of Canandaigua; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister, Betty Marks of Geneseo.
