Philip L. Mattice
SCHENECTADY — Philip L. Mattice, of Schenectady, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, at home.

He was born Dec. 9, 1924, son of the late George F. and Katrina (Schulz) Mattice, longtime Worcester residents.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He graduated from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, in 1951. He then worked for IBM in Owego and Vestal, retiring in 1990, as an advisory engineer.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Rena Mattice of Schenectady; two daughters, Susan Mattice and friend, Rudolf Addink of Schenectady, and Nancy Mattice and husband, Dr. David Pallas of N. Greenbush; three grandchildren, Daniel, Leah and Sylvia of N. Greenbush; sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Myron DuVal of Valhalla; nephews, Brian and Philip DuVal of Valhalla; and many cousins and friends.

A service of Christian burial will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998, at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, 115 Main St., Worcester. The Rev. Donald Mueller of Grace Lutheran Church in Vestal will officiate. Viewing time will be from noon to 1 p.m. that day. Interment will immediately follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Worcester, with military honors presented by the Worcester American Legion Post 1584. Afterward, a coffee hour will be held at the Worcester United Methodist Church on Main Street. All friends and relatives are invited.

A memorial service at Grace Lutheran Church in Vestal, will be held on Sunday, Nov. 22, 1998, at 2 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Schenectady Hospice; Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo; American Cancer Society; or the American Heart or Lung Association.

Arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Diane D. Starbird
BAINBRIDGE — Diane D. Starbird, 62, of Bainbridge died unexpectedly Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, at The Hospital in Sidney.

She was born to the late Maynard and Lila Wagner Dodge in Binghamton on July 16, 1936.

Diane married Craig Starbird on July 25, 1959, in Deposit. Diane and Craig have been the owners and proprietors of The Olde Jericho Tavern in Bainbridge since 1971.

She was also a member of the Bainbridge Chamber of Commerce, and an active participant of the United Methodist Church in Bainbridge, a longtime member of the Women's Recreation Club and an avid golfer and gardener.

Diane is survived by her husband of 39 years, Craig Starbird of Bainbridge; two sons and daughter-in-laws, Daniel and Patty Starbird of Tryon, N.C. and David Starbird and Jacalyn Dicks of Bainbridge; two daughters and son-in-laws, Colleen and Tom Winn of Bainbridge and Cindy and Tom Salak of Guilford; beloved grandmother of John, Gavin and Lukas Winn, Tyler Starbird, Nevin, Katie-Mae, Craig and Benjamin Laing, Brandy, Timmie and Amy Dicks, Sara and Briana Salak; two sisters and brother-in-law, Lila Williams of Windsor and Sherry and Robert Thomas of Deposit; and mother-in-law, Irene Martin of Deposit.

She was predeceased by brother-in-law, Eugene Williams.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at the United Methodist Church in Bainbridge, with the Rev. C. Gerald Blake Jr. officiating.

Calling hourse were Sunday at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bainbridge Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.

Wayne E. Boyles Sr.
FRANKLIN — Wayne E. Boyles Sr., 77, of Franklin, died on Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, at The Hospital, Sidney.
He was born on Oct. 13, 1921, in Franklin, Pa., the son of Arthur and Sylvia Boyles. He married Hilda Marshall in  Jeffersonville.

Wayne proudly served in the Army during World War II as a private first class. He was a member of the 104th Timberwolf Infantry Division. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his heroic achievement in connection with military operations in Germany. He not only administered aid to himself and a fellow serviceman, he also captured five enemy soldiers. Wayne was also a recipient of the Purple Heart Medal and the Distinguished Service Cross.

While living in the Sullivan County area, Wayne worked as a logger. He and his wife, Hilda, moved their family from Livingston Manor to Franklin. Wayne owned and operated a dairy farm for many years.

He was a member of the American Legion Ouleout Valley Post 1689. He was a good father and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Hilda E. Boyles of Franklin; his children and their spouses, Donna and George Edwards of Franklin, Wayne "Sonny" and Electa Boyles Jr. of Franklin, Leon Boyles of Franklin and Katherine and Michael Gracey of Hamden; his stepchildren and their spouses, Rosa Lewis of Richfield Springs, George C. Lewis of Elko, Nev., Charles and Annie Lewis Jr. of Livingston Manor, and Robert J. and Jane Lewis of Mount Vision; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and his sisters, Lucille Brannen of Harvard, Wildred Rogers of Livingston Manor and Betty Starkweather of Liberty. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Wayne was predeceased by four brothers and one sister.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, at 2 p.m. at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of United Methodist Church, Sidney, officiating. Burial will follow in Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin, where the American Legion Ouleout Valley Post 1689 will conduct military services.

Friends may call one hour prior to service time at the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the special efforts of Jack Early and the Franklin Emergency Squad.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin Emergency Squad or the American Legion Ouleout Valley Post 1689.

Arrangments are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Lillian E. Anderson
COOPERSTOWN — Lillian E. Anderson, 77, of Toddsville, passed away Sunday afternoon, Nov. 8, 1998, at the Meadows.

Lillian was born June 30, 1921, a daughter of Riley and Mary (Olds) Waterman in Ashland.

She attended school in the Kingston area and married Earl "Roy" Kilts in December 1939. She later married Roland Anderson. Lillian was a housewife as well as a caregiver for many in the area.

Lillian enjoyed cooking, jigsaw puzzles and sewing, especially making her own clothes.

She is survived by four sons, Louis Kilts of Cooperstown, Milton Champlin of Gloversville, Douglas Lord of Richfield Springs and Elmer Miller; three daughters, Alberta Fuller of St. Johnsville, Mary Chancellor of Missouri and Rosemary Miller of Herkimer; a sister, Helen Miller of Middletown; four sisters-in-law, Ruby Chase of Milford, Clara Brechbuhl of Brooklyn, Iowa, Dorothy Konchar of Milford and Fannie Dart of Portlandville; two brothers-in-law, William and Ceylon Kilts of Milford; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two husbands, Earl "Roy" Kilts and Roland Anderson; a grandson, Joseph Champlin; and a great-grandson, Patrick Hazzard.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998, at 1 p.m., at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown with Fr. John R. Roos, of Our Lady of the Lake Church of St. Mary in Cooperstown, officiating. Burial will be at Oneonta Plains Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Maxine B. McCorkle
OKLAHOMA — Maxine McCorkle, 90, an  Oklahoma native, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, at the Meadows Nursing Home in Cooperstown.

Prior to January of this year, she resided at the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home.

The daughter of an  Oklahoma "Sooner" and oil speculator, Maxine was born in the  Oklahoma Panhandle. Her family followed the oil boom from  Texas to Kansas and back, settling finally in Tulsa, Okla., in the mid-1920's.

Maxine attended Tulsa University and the University of Kansas, where she was a Kappa Alpha Theta.

Maxine was married to John M. McCorkle of Clifton Hill, Mo., and had one daughter, Karen Consolini, formerly of Hartwick, and now New York City.

Maxine is survived by her daughter, Karen; and two grandchildren, Marella of New York and Marcus of Hong Kong; as well as a brother, David of  Oklahoma.

Maxine will always be remembered for the fashion show consisting of her personal clothing collection which ignited the "Fabulous 40's" party that kicked off the 1990 Winter Festival given by Gallery 53 in Cooperstown.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Carol W. VanDusen
ONEONTA — Carol W. VanDusen, 67, formerly of 4 Harrison Ave., Oneonta, died on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

She was born in Oneonta on Jan. 19, 1931, the daughter of Benjamin L. and Evelyn (Wilbur) Blowers.

She was married to F. Ward VanDusen on July 3, 1955, at the Elm Park United Methodist Church in Oneonta. Mr. VanDusen died on April 24, 1982.

She graduated from Oneonta High School in 1948, and from Oneonta State Teachers College in 1954. She taught the first grade in the Otego Central School from 1954-1959, at which time she left full-time teaching to be at home with her family and did substitute teaching in many area schools. In 1980, she was employed by the Otsego County Head Start Program under the direction of Mrs. Esther Fink. Mrs. VanDusen was the teacher center director of Center 12 at the Lutheran Church of the Atonement in Oneonta. The Center had two classes of 3- and 4-year-old children and adult staff members as well. She enjoyed working with the children, families and volunteers very much. She stayed with the program until 1987, when she retired.

She was a lifelong area resident and was a 50-year member of the Elm Park United Methodist Church. She was a former member of the Friendly Circle of the Church, which her mother had started for the younger women of the church.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William J. (Kay) Ward III; a son, David B. VanDusen and his wife, Sandra, all of Oneonta; five grandchildren, W. Jeremiah Ward IV, Kay Leigh Frances Ward, Patrick, Kaleb and Jacob VanDusen, all of Oneonta; one sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Richard (Nini) Mead of Oneonta; one nephew, James Mead; one great-nephew, Andrew Mead; a sister-in-law and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Herron of Sauquoit, and their children, Susan Herron and Jill Hartling; and several cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 13, 1998, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Otego.

There will be no formal calling hours, however, the family will be receiving friends one hour prior to the start of the funeral service.

Those who wish may make contributions to the Greater Plains School Library, West End Avenue, Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Elizabeth Crandall
SIDNEY — Elizabeth Crandall, 96, of Sidney, died Tuesday morning, Nov. 10, 1998, at the Skilled Nursing Care Facility of The Hospital in Sidney.

Mrs. Crandall was born Nov. 9, 1902, in Germany, the daughter of Nicholas and Carolina (Teson) Kuppens.

She married Raymond Crandall in Franklin on July 9, 1929. They were married for more than 31 years until his death on Jan. 21, 1961.

Mrs. Crandall came to the United States from Germany in 1907, at the age of 5 with her family. In her early years she lived in North Franklin. In the early 1930s she moved to Worcester and ran a dairy farm with her husband. In 1935, they moved to Cole Hill where they purchased and operated a dairy farm until 1961. Mrs. Crandall then moved to Goodyear Lake where she resided until 1975, and then to Nader Towers in Oneonta where she lived for 18 years.

Mrs. Crandall enjoyed crocheting, knitting and needlepoint. She also made many different types of ornaments with beads.

Mrs. Crandall is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Lloyd (Rose Arlene) Brower of Sidney and Mrs. Jack (Lena) Barnes of West Davenport; four grandchildren and their spouses, Douglas and Patricia Brower of Sidney, Richard and Robin Brower of Franklin, Lawrence and Connie Barnes of Sidney and David and Debra Barnes of Franklin; nine great-grandchildren, Daryl Brower of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Alison and Sarah Brower of Sidney, Amy and Jason Brower of Franklin, Jesse Barnes of Sidney, Jeremey Barnes of Colonie, Jennifer and Jody Barnes of Franklin; one great-great-grandson, Tyler Barnes; one brother and sister-in-law, August and Dorthea Kuppens of Oneonta; and a sister, Mrs. Frank (Hazel) Snyder of Sidney.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, the Rev. Roanne MacEwan, pastor of the First Congregational United Church of Christ of Sidney, will officiate. Burial will follow at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Skilled Nursing Care Facility of The Hospital in Sidney.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Homes, Oneonta and Otego.

June M. Bolster
BAINBRIDGE — June M. Bolster, 61, of Bainbridge, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998, at the General Hospital in Binghamton.

June was born Jan. 7, 1937, to the late Evan and Rose J. (Sands) Smith in Bainbridge.

She married Clarence "Dick" Bolster on June 24, 1952, in Masonville. He predeceased her on Nov. 11, 1991.

June attended the North Afton United Methodist Church, D.A.R. of Bainbridge and Afton. She was a member of the Afton Historical Society, the Afton Senior Citizens, Loyal Order of Moose No. 277 Women's Auxiliary, Sidney, Lodge of the Elks No. 2175 Women's Auxiliary, Sidney, Afton Women's Exchange, I.A.M.&A.W. Local 1529, Sidney.

June was employed by Amphenol Corp., Sidney for 25 years as a machinist in the plating department.

June is survived by three sons, Mr. Richard L. Bolster of Bainbridge, Mr. Randy D. Bolster of Bainbridge and Mr. Rodney S. Bolster and Theresa Goshea of Afton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. David (Jean) Riley of Afton and Mrs. Richard (Cathy) Henry of Bainbridge; three sisters, Doris Schultz of Afton, Margery Snider of Tracy,  Calif., and Joyce Snider of Tracy,  Calif.; seven grandchildren, Mrs. Michael (Wendy) Stulir, Mrs. Wade (Brenda) Decker, Julie Scott and her companion, Charles Simonds, Mr. Richard and Jakena Henry, Lance Henry and his companion, Ginger Skellet, Kristine Goshea and Anthony Morin; three great-grandchildren, Caleb Stulir, Connor Decker and Corbin Decker; special friends, Cindy and Bill Butler of Bainbridge, Mary Bowker of Sanford, Dorothy Bolster of Mt. Pocono, Pa.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

June is also predeceased by a brother, Roger E. Smith, and a sister, Gloria M. Snider.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 13, 1998, at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney at 11 a.m.

Friends may call Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge.

Memorial contributions may be made to the International My"-eloma Foundation, 2129 Stanley Hills Drive, Los Angeles,  Calif., 90046, or the Bainbridge Emergency Squad.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers, Inc., 21 Main St., Sidney.
