Henry B. Gersoni

COLLIERSVILLE — Mr. Henry B. Gersoni, 90, of Colliersville, died Tuesday morning, May 2, 2000, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 6, 1910, in Portland, Ore., the son of Michael and Ella (Grubman) Gersoni.

He married Claire Stetson on Aug. 20, 1941. Mrs. Gersoni died Nov. 4, 1990.

Henry was a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army during World War II. He also was a research engineer for the Bendix Corp. in Sidney, retiring in 1968.

Henry was active in the community and Temple Beth El.

Henry is survived by three daughters, Henrietta Mandel of Lexington, Mass., Carolyn Hillis of Davenport and Ruth Lind of Colliersville; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Michael and Amy Packard of Otego, Gregory and Joanne Packard of Colliersville, Valerie Thorne of Georgia, Jason Thorne of Oneonta, David and Alice Mandel of Massachusetts, Sandy and John Brentlinger of Massachusetts and Joshua and Teri McGlynn Mandel of California; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Henry was predeceased by one sister, Ruth Herzog, and one brother, Benjamin Gersoni.

At the request of Mr. Gersoni, there will be no funeral services.

Calling hours will be on Thursday, May 4, 2000, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, for those who wish to call.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Theodore Vodapivc

EAST WORCESTER — Theodore Vodapivc, 86, of Winter Haven, Fla., died Jan. 3, 2000, in Winter Haven, Fla.

He was born July 15, 1913, in Colorado, and he lived in East Worcester until moving to Winter Haven, Fla., following retirement.

He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Winter Haven, Schenevus Valley Masonic Lodge No. 592 and the VFW Post No. 2752 in Schenevus.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1945 as a motor machinist, obtaining the rank of mate second-class. He was assigned to the USS Calebra Island in the Philippines.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine Vodapivc, of Winter Haven, Fla.; and a brother, Frank Vodapivc, of Saratoga Springs.

He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Vodapivc, of East Worcester.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 4, 2000, at the East Worcester Cemetery with VFW military honors.

Funeral arrangements are by the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel, 115 Main St., Worcester.

William J. Fort

LOGANSPORT, La. — William J. Fort, 83, retired x-ray technician, died Friday, April 14, 2000.

Mr. Fort was born in South River, N.J.

He was a former longtime resident of Otsego County.

He was employed by Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital for 38 years.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Fort of Logansport, La.; daughter, Melissa Bergman of Cocoa, Fla.; son, William Fort of Port Charlotte, Fla.; daughter, Leona Sedler of Port Charlotte, Fla.; stepdaughter, Teresa Thomas of Lake Wales, Fla.; and three grandchildren.

Rose Neath Funeral Home in Logansport, La., handled the arrangements.

Alton Smith

COOPERSTOWN — Graveside funeral and committal services for Mr. Alton Smith, who passed away March 7, 2000, will be held on Monday, May 8, 2000, at 11 a.m. in the Springfield Cemetery, Springfield Center, with the Rev. Ronald Fralick officiating.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Muriel M. Trask

ONEONTA — Muriel M. Trask, 83, of Oneonta and Port Richie, Fla., died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at home unexpectedly.

She was born May 18, 1916, in Brooklyn, the daughter of William and Lillian (Losie) Younger.

She married Eugene M. Trask on June 8, 1945, in Maryland.

Mrs. Trask was a United States Army veteran stationed at Fort Hamilton, during World War II.

Mrs. Trask lived in Maryland, for many years, where she ran a beauty shop from her home.

In 1980, she and her husband moved to Port Richie, Fla. then in April moved to Oneonta.

She was a member of the Catholic Church in New Port Richie, Fla. She loved being with her family and will be dearly missed by all.

Mrs. Trask is survived by her husband, Eugene M. Trask of Oneonta; two daughters, Jill and her husband, Jim Scott, of Maryland and Ann and her husband, Bob Kitts, of Silver Spring, Md.; grandchildren, Colleen, Ryan and Sean Scott and Danny and Marianne Kitts; a great-grandson, Michael Scott; sister, Eleanor Keilen of Charleston, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews

A graveside memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 6, 2000, at the Maryland Cemetery, with the Rev. Edward Golding pastor of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Schenevus, officiating.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mrs. Trask to the Salvation Army, 25 River St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by Heller Funeral Home, 10 Arch St., Schenevus.

Richard B. Roberts

ALBANY — Memorial services for Richard B. Roberts, 69, of Albany and formerly of Oneonta, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 6, 2000, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. John Dawson, Catskill Area Hospice chaplain, officiating. Mr. Roberts died after a lengthy illness in Albany on April 28, 2000.

Ethna S. Reid

ONEONTA — Ethna S. Reid, 105, of Oneonta, one of the area's oldest residents, passed away Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, after a brief illness.

She was born Oct. 24, 1894, in West Oneonta, the daughter of William and Emily (Miller) Cooley.

She married Hunter Reid on Sept. 15, 1923. Mr. Reid died Dec. 9, 1975.

Before her retirement in 1950, Mrs. Reid was employed by NYSEG in Norwich, Sealtest Ice Cream Co. and Citizens Bank of Oneonta.

Mrs. Reid was a lifelong area resident. She was a member of the West Oneonta Baptist Church, also a life member of the Norwich Order of the Eastern Star, and played the organ at the West Oneonta Baptist Church for years.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles, and in 1937, was the city of Oneonta Women's Bowling Champion.

She was a devoted wife and took an active interest in her family.

Mrs. Reid is survived by a nephew, Henry Cooley of Worcester; a niece, Eloise Frazier of Norwich; and several grandnephews, grandnieces and cousins.

Private funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, May 5, 2000, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Joyce Allen, pastor of the Worcester United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions may be made to the Residence Fund at the Oneonta Nursing Home, 330 Chestnut St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Frances W. Warren

UTICA — Frances W. Warren, 89, of 1550 Willow Park, Utica, formerly of Mohawk, passed away Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at the Masonic Home, Utica.

She was born Feb. 4, 1911, in Schuyler Lake, the daughter of the late Erdie F. and Harriett Allen Washburn.

She was a 1927 graduate of Richfield Springs High School. She received her RN at Albany Medical Center in 1931, and received her social worker degree from Syracuse University.

On May 30, 1940, she married Harvey T. Warren in West Edmeston; he passed away in 1964.

Mrs. Warren was the first school nurse at Richfield Springs School system, and was employed as a probation officer with Herkimer County from 1952 until her retirement in 1978.

Mrs. Warren was a member of the Mohawk Reformed Church in Mohawk, past grand matron of the Eastern Star Valley Chapter 82, former member Zonta, and was active in the church choir.

Mrs. Warren is survived by a sister, Mary Pike of Chaumont; a brother, Harie Washburn of Sharon Springs; a special nephew, Jerry Reed of Whitesboro; and a special niece, Joyce Buell of Clinton; and several other nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Allen Washburn.

A memorial service for Mrs. Warren will be held at a time to be announced at the Mohawk Reformed Church with interment in Mohawk Cemetery.

In keeping with Mrs. Warren's wishes there are no calling hours.

James M. Finkle

ANDES — James M. Finkle, 93, of Andes, died April 8, 2000, at Countryside Care Center in Delhi.

James was born May 18, 1906, in the town of Andes, the son of Rease and Elizabeth Liddle Finkle.

He was married first to Flora Ruff in February 1929. She predeceased him in 1934. He then married Laura Ruff on January 1943. She died in 1976.

A lifelong Andes resident, Jimmy operated a dairy farm on Palmer Hill until his retirement in 1969, and has lived in the village of Andes since.

James is survived by his brother, Gilbert Finkle of Andes; daughter-in-law, Frances Finkle of Andes; three grandchildren, Mark Finkle of Margate, Fla., Ellen Ciferri of W. Palm Beach, Fla., and Gary Finkle of Delhi. Also several nieces and nephews survive.

He was predeceased by his two sons, James and Lloyd, and seven of his brothers and sisters.

Memorials to the Andes Emergency Squad in the name of James M. Finkle would be appreciated.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2000, at 2 p.m. in Andes Cemetery, with the Rev. Daniel McCollister officiating.

Steve Jacoby

LOS ANGELES,  Calif. — Steve Jacoby, former Oneonta businessman, succumbed to a heart attack in Los Angeles,  Calif., on Feb. 3, 2000, following a yearlong battle with kidney disease. Steve was 69.

In the 1960s, Steve owned The Tryworks Bookstore and Cafe at 115 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. Steve's Bookstore showcased the most advanced literature of the time. Steve's favorite book was Professor Norman Brown's Freudian Study of History, "Life Against Death."

From the years that I worked for Steve, I think that his most lasting influence was his encouragement to others for reading the classics. Most Saturday evenings Steve would close The Tryworks at 1 a.m., and then hold a party until dawn in his cafe. There would always be literary presentations at Steve's parties. He once gave a flawless dramatic reading of Dostoyevsky's "Grand Inquisitor."

Steve moved, with his family, to Boston in 1970, and following the death of his wife, Kay, in 1974, moved to Los Angeles.

Steve is survived by his sons, Martin and John; and his daughter, Grace.

Muriel M. Trask

ONEONTA — Muriel M. Trask, 83, of Oneonta and Port Richie, Fla., died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at home unexpectedly.

Ralph J. Goodale

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Ralph J. Goodale, 83, of West Main Street, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, May 3, 2000, in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born on Nov. 28, 1916, in Richfield Springs, son of the late Roger and Mabel Baltzell Goodale.

A lifelong Richfield Springs resident, he was educated in Richfield Springs schools.

An honorably discharged U.S. Army veteran, he served our country during World War II.

Ralph was married to the former Betty Ellis; she died in 1977.

For 18 years he was a heavy equipment operator for the New York State Thruway Authority, retiring in 1978.

He was a member of the Richfield Springs American Legion Post.

Surviving him are two sons and their wives, David and Jeannine Goodale of Clifton Park and Thomas and Marcia Goodale of Richfield Springs; four brothers, William Goodale of Utica, Warren Goodale of Irvine,  Calif., Roger Goodale of Barstow,  Calif., and Jack Goodale of Richfield Springs; three sisters, Alice Dent of Naples, Fla., Virginia Fassett of Port Orange, Fla., and Catherine Estarring of Middleville; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews; and his good friend and companion, Joan Starr of Richfield Springs.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, George and Ward Goodale.

A graveside service with military honors accorded by the Richfield Springs American Legion Post will be held on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. in Lakeview Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs.

Members of the Richfield Springs American Legion Post are asked to meet at the funeral home on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. for services.

Laura M. Erikson

GILBERTSVILLE — Laura Meriba Erikson, 67, formerly of Gilbertsville, died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at the Oneonta Nursing Home, where she had been a resident since 1989.

She was born in Cooperstown, on Jan. 31, 1933, the daughter of Charles H. Burk Sr. and Meriba (Hubbard) Burk.

She was married to John Erikson on June 28, 1950, in Gilbertsville. John died Feb. 27, 1997.

She was a homemaker and a lifelong resident of the Butternut Valley.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Butternut Chapter and had served the Gilbertsville area answering the fire and ambulance phone for many years.

She is survived by a daughter, Mary Hartwell, and her husband, Roy, of Colorado Springs,  Colo.; a son, Charles (Chuck) Erikson, and his wife, Shirley, of Laurens; two brothers, Charles H. Burk Jr. and his wife, Sandra, of Norwich and Carl J. Burk and his wife, Kathy, of South New Berlin; one sister, Anna Mae Christian and her husband, David of South New Berlin; a granddaughter, Stephanie Bell, and her husband, David, of the state of Maryland; a grandson, James Hartwell of Colorado Springs,  Colo.; two great-granddaughters, Michaela and Alexandra Bell of the state of Maryland; and also several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be Saturday, May 6, 2000, at 12:30 p.m. at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris, with the Rev. J. Mark Norlund officiating. Burial will be in the Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville.

There will be no calling hours.

Those who wish are asked to donate to the Gilbertsville or Garrattsville Emergency squads or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in her memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.
