Kenneth E. Davis

UNADILLA — Kenneth E. Davis, 84, of Unadilla, died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at The Hospital, Sidney.

He was born Aug. 14, 1915, in Bainbridge, the son of Earl and Louise (Searles) Davis.

He was married to Harriet Peattie on Dec. 8, 1938, in Unadilla.

Ken was a graduate of Bainbridge High School, Class of 1933, were he was active in sports and Boy Scouting, which he became a Star Scout.

He was employed for three years at American Plastics in Bainbridge and in 1936, he started his 42 years of employment with Bendix Corp. of Sidney. While employed in field engineering and the sales departments, he traveled throughout the United States and Canada. In 1962-1963, he introduced Bendix Magnetos for the Indianapolis 500 race cars. He also was involved in providing a new jet ignition for the Rolls-Royce Co. in London, England. In 1978, he retired as supervisor of the Marketing Department.

Ken was a member of the Unadilla United Methodist Church and former chairman of the trustees, former advancement man for the Unadilla Boy Scouts, a 40-year member and former assistant chief of the Unadilla Fire Department, and the Unadilla Rod and Gun Club, where he served as treasurer for 17 years.

He is survived by his wife, Harriet Davis of Unadilla; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard and Joan Davis of Norwich and James Davis of Sarasota, Fla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Douglas Gage of Davenport, Iowa; a sister, Marian Moretz of Bainbridge; four grandchildren, Kevin Davis, Karen Duthler, Kimberlee and Kristina Gage.

He was predeceased by a sister, Jessamine Davis.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 8, 2000, at the Unadilla United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Donna Joy Schmid, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Friends may call at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla, Wednesday, June 7, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m., when the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Emergency Squad or the Unadilla United Methodist Church.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Louise McShane

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Louise McShane "Addie," 91, of Canadrago Street, died on Monday morning, June 5, 2000, in Stone Hedge Nursing Home, Rome.

She was born on Sept. 15, 1908, in Richfield Springs, daughter of the late Louis and Minnie Eckler Weirs.

A lifelong Richfield Springs resident, she was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School.

On Nov. 12, 1930, she married Thomas McShane in Richfield Springs, a loving and devoted union of 45 years until his passing in 1975.

Addie's life revolved around her home and the love she had for her children and family.

She was a member of the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs.

Surviving her are two sons and their wives, John J. and Leona McShane of Elmira and Donald E. and Joanne McShane of Frankfort; a daughter, Sharon and her husband, James Ernenwein of Westmoreland; one brother, Robert Weirs of Macon, Ga.; four grandchildren, Thomas and his wife, Elaine McShane of Rochester, Jean and her husband, Cary Vaeth of Latham, Michael Ernenwein of Westmoreland and Cathy and her husband, Gifford DeWater of Elmira; four great-grandchildren, Nicholas Vaeth of Latham, Michael and his wife, Sherry DeWater of Elmira, Carrie and her husband, Chris Tournour of Guilderland and Steven DeWater of Elmira; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, Thomas, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Baker, Maurice and Laverne Weirs; and a sister, Sarah Worden.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Williams Harkins, pastor of the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs, officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeview Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Richfield Springs Emergency Squad or the West Winfield Emergency Squad. Envelopes will be available at the funeral.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the family of Dick and Janet Bobnik for their loving care and compassion shown to Louise.

Marian Eldred

PIERSTOWN — Marian Annette Eldred was born in Pierstown, near Cooperstown, on April 6, 1907, daughter of Jesse Caldwell Shepard and Luella Gurney Shepard.

She married Fred Adelbert Eldred on July 19, 1930, who died on Aug. 22, 1977.

Marian graduated with honors from Cooperstown High School in 1923, then attended Ridley Lowell Business School in Binghamton.

She had been a legal secretary, clerk of the Oneonta City Court, and also a secretary in the State University College at Oneonta Home Economics Department.

As a member of the First Baptist Church since 1925, she was very active and held several offices. She was a deaconess, a Sunday school teacher, and financial chairman. In addition, she was a member of the American Baptist Women, and served as its treasurer.

In the community, she had been a secretary-treasurer of the Oneonta Railroad Club, a member of the Fox Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and secretary of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by sons, F. Donald Eldred and his wife, Sally, of Vestal, William J. Eldred and his wife, Ann, of Merritt Island, Fla.; a daughter, Janet E. Balson, and her husband, John, of Devon, Pa.; a sister, Frances S. Ellmauer of Oneonta; six married grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was recently predeceased by her brother, Kenneth J. Shepard, of Cooperstown.

A memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, 2000, at the First Baptist Church of Oneonta. Interment will be in Oneonta Plains Cemetery, Oneonta. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of services at the church.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Life Line Care of A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, 1 Norton Ave., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

Earl P. Mumford

OTEGO — Earl P. Mumford, 91, of Flax Island Road, Otego, passed away on Thursday, June 1, 2000.

He was born in Middlefield on Sept. 28, 1908, the son of Howard and Hallie (VanDeBoe) Mumford.

He married Kathryn (Sowles) Patrick on June 16, 1969, who survives. He is also survived by his daughter, Rosamary Potter, and her fiance, William Wlasiuk of Sidney; and his sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Janice Patrick of Klamath Falls, Ore., and Jerry and Barbara Patrick of Schenectady. In addition, Earl is survived by his sister, Nina M. Clarke of Canisteo; as well as his brothers and sisters-in-law, Rolan H. and Trula Mumford of Melbourne, Fla., and Donald J. and Mary Mumford of Oakfield. Earl is survived too, by several loving grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Earl was an Otego Town Justice and a member of the Otego Town Board for 22 years. He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons for nearly 50 years and of the Otego Presbyterian Church.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 10, 2000, at 3 p.m. in the Otego Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Fred Albrecht, of the Otego United Methodist Church, officiating.

Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made in Earl's name to the Otego Volunteer Fire Department, River Street, Otego, N.Y. 13825, by those who wish to do so.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Bookout Funeral Home.

Williams Rathbun

EAST SPRINGFIELD — Committal services for Mr. Williams A. Rathbun, who passed away March 21, 2000, will be held on Saturday, June 10, 2000, in the Springfield Cemetery, Springfield Center, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Ronald Fralick officiating. Burial will follow.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Joan M. Austin

FRANKLIN — Joan M. Austin, 70, of Franklin, died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at the Crouse Irving Hospital in Syracuse.

She was born May 30, 1930, in Oneonta, the daughter of Philip and Ruth (Bronson) Constable.

She married Oliver E. Austin on July 3, 1949, and he died in 1975.

A lifelong area resident, and a homemaker, Joan was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 578, Unadilla, and the Unadilla TOPS organization.

After the death of her husband, she became an area representative for Avon.

She is survived by a son, Nicholas G. Austin of Franklin; three grandchildren, Samantha, Ashley and Brooke Austin of Franklin; a sister, Beverly Scutt of Oneonta; two sisters-in-law, Edna Constable of Unadilla and Emily Roberts of Milford,

She was also predeceased by a son, Oliver "Jiggs" Austin.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, June 9, 2000, at 1 p.m. in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin, with the Rev. Dr. Lyle Linder, pastor of the Franklin United Methodist Church, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wells Bridge Park Committee, Wells Bridge, N.Y. 13859.

Arrangements are by the Kenneth L. Bennett Funeral Home, Franklin.

Effie W. Darling

SOUTH GILBOA — Effie W. Darling, 89, of Bailey Road, South Gilboa, died June 3, 2000, at her residence.

She was born Oct. 14, 1910 in Burlington, Vt.

She was married to Clyde Darling on April 22, 1955, in Windham. Clyde died Aug. 13, 1964. She had lived in South Gilboa since she was married.

Effie was a music teacher and taught in several schools including Ticonderogra, Burlington, Vt., and Stamford. She was an avid lover of music and played several years with the Catskill Symphony Orchestra.

Effie was a naturalist, loving plants and especially the birds and animals around her home.

She was a member of the Oneonta YMCA.

She is survived by a niece, Breeann Bull of Taunton, Mass.; two nephews, William T. Bull of Seekonk, Mass., and Thomas A. Bull of Berkeley, Mass.; and a cousin, Susan Payne of Australia.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 8, 2000, at the South Gilboa Cemetery adjacent to her home. The Rev. Richard Elder, pastor of the Hobart United Methodist Church, will be officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford and Grand Gorge.

Janet Moseman

PRATTSVILLE — Janet Moseman, 55, of Prattsville, died Saturday, June 3, 2000, at her residence.

She was born on June 1, 1945, in Prattsville, to Elwin and Shirley Moseman.

She was predeceased by her father, and sisters, Ruth Kishpaugh and Mary Duncan.

She is survived by her mother, Shirley; stepfather, David Truesdell; sisters, Virginia Kennedy of Prattsville, Margaret and C.W. Warren of Berrysville, Ark., Diana and Arnold Jaeger of Prattsville and Donna Ramundo of Prattsville. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and her special friend, Vincent Hayden.

Ms. Moseman retired from a position as an audit clerk in the payroll division of New York state in 1992.

She loved flowers and gardening.

A committal service will be held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Prattsville Rescue Squad and the Zadock Pratt Museum in her memory would be greatly appreciated.

Lydia Turnier

HOBART — Lydia Turnier, 87, of Hobart, died June 4, 2000, at Delaware County Countryside Care Center in Delhi.

She was born Aug. 25, 1912, in the Bronx, the daughter of Robert and Alberta (Abrams) Rode.

She married the late Arthur A. Turnier in the Bronx, March 25, 1934. He passed away Aug. 17, 1992.

Mrs. Turnier worked for the Hobart Bank as a secretary in banking.

She was a member of the Hobart United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol (Tom) Surace of Toms River, N.J.; a son, Arthur R. Turnier of Sandy, Utah; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Martha Haas of Florida.

A graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family at Locust Hill Cemetery, Hobart.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Ellen Blessin

ONEONTA — A graveside service for Mrs. Ellen Blessin, 85, of Oneonta and formerly of Cooperstown, who died Feb. 13, 2000, will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 10, 2000, in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery, with the Rev. William D. Bouton, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Oneonta, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Andrew C. Davis

GRAND GORGE — Andrew C. Davis, 69, of Route 23, Grand Gorge, died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born July 4, 1930, in Prattsville, the son of Theron Davis and Gertrude Davis.

He married Helen Bresee on Aug. 5. 1951, in Hobart.

He served in the United States Air Force from 1950-1954. He was a teacher and retired after 24 years of service at NCOC, Grand Gorge. He served as the clerk of the works for the addition to the Gilboa-Conesville School and for the rebuilding of the United Methodist Church, Grand Gorge, after the church fire. He worked with several contractors on building projects in the area.

He was a member of United Methodist Church, Grand Gorge, the NRA and Ralph S. Ives Jr. American Legion Post, Roxbury. He was an avid hunter.

He graduated from Grand Gorge Central School in 1948.

He loved his family and made many keepsakes for them with his talent in woodmaking.

Andrew is survived by his wife, Helen Davis; one son and daughter-in-law, William H. and Patti Davis; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Stephen P. Ramundo and Ann and Kevin R. Hull; 10 grandchildren, Nicolette and Brooke Davis, Shannon, Joseph and Bobby Kolka, Chantal, Lucas and Cole Ramundo and Emily and Erin Hull; two brothers, Arthur Davis and Donald Davis and wife, Gertie; one sister, Gladys Carmen; his mother-in-law, Doris Bresee Kerr; two brothers-in-law and their wives, Roger and Jana Bresee and David and Susan Bresee; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services and committal will be held 1:30 p.m., Saturday, June 10, 2000, at the United Methodist Church, Grand Gorge, with the Rev. Robert Nash officiating.

Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Calling hours will be Friday, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Contributions in memory of Andy Davis may be made to the United Methodist Church, Grand Gorge or the Catskill Area Hospice, Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are by the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.

Vicki L. Sweeney

ARKVILLE — Vicki L. Sweeney, 48, of Arkville, died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.

She was born April 20, 1952, in Margaretville, the daughter of Willis R. Marks and Ginny Guthric.

She married Robert Sweeney on Feb. 6, 1987.

She was an elementary teacher at the Margaretville Central School and also worked with the reading recovery program.

She was a lifelong area resident.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Margaretville, a 1970 graduate of Margaretville Central School, and graduated from State University College at Brockport.

Vicki is survived by her husband, Rob Sweeney; one son, Kevin Sweeney; her parents, Willis and Ginny Marks; one brother, Gary Marks, and sister-in-law, Terry Marks; one sister, Cathy Hinkley, and brother-in-law, Doug Hinkley; one brother-in-law, Brian Sweeney, and sister-in-law, Carmel Sweeney; mother-in-law, Margaret Sweeney; and nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and many friends.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m.. Thursday, June 8, 2000, at the United Methodist Church, Margaretville, with the Rev. Dr. George Carpenter officiating. Burial will be in the Margaretville Cemetery, Margaretville.

Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.

Contributions may be made to the Scholarship Fund in memory of Vicki L. Sweeney at the Margaretville Central School.

Funeral arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
