Edna M. Hacklin

ONEONTA — Edna M. Hacklin, 83, of Oneonta, drifted peacefully to another shore on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home one day before her 84th birthday.

She was born on Sept. 27, 1916, in Gilboa, the daughter of the late Edward P. and Dinah M. Mann Moore.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, George, in 1993, and seven siblings.

She is survived by a daughter, Roberta J. Williams of Oneonta; a son, George Hacklin Jr. of Union, Maine; three grandchildren, Michele M. Rogers, Colleen A. Rogers and William J. Rogers; two great-grandchildren, Ephraim J. Tuttle and Kristin H. Rogers; two sisters, Kathryn I. Freiner of Oneonta and Elizabeth J. Moore of Oneonta; one brother, Ernest P. Moore of Stamford; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.

Mrs. Hacklin was a lifetime resident of the area. She was once employed with Allied in Sidney and before that she was with Bruno's Food Market, W. Clyde Wright Food Market, the Elmore Milling Co. and the Homer Folks Hospital.

She was an avid gardener spending many years tending her crop in Mount Vision. Edna loved animals and enjoyed the quiet life. She was a wonderful cook, always preparing the holiday meals up until the time of her death. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister and friend who will be deeply missed.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Donna Joy Schmid, chaplain of the A.O. Fox Memorial Nursing Home, officiating.

Calling hours will be private.

Interment will be in Mount Vision Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, in Edna's memory.

Edward W. Nyback

CHARLOTTEVILLE — Edward William Nyback, 59, of Charlotteville, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, at home after a short illness.

He was born April 16, 1941, in Manhattan, the son of Evert and Edith (Norrgord) Nyback.

He married Mary Ann Ballard on April 2, 1961, in Oneonta.

Mr. Nyback was a lifelong area resident of Charlotteville. He was retired from the Schenectady Local Carpenters Union No. 390, where he worked since 1958. He was also the clerk of works for the Oneonta City School District for many years and most recently the clerk of works for the Cobleskill-Richmondville School District.

Mr. Nyback enjoyed wood crafts and was a very generous person. He will be dearly missed by all.

Mr. Nyback is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Nyback of Charlotteville; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Robyn and Joseph Ouimet of Oneonta, Valarie and Floyd Manchester of East Worcester and Christine Nyback of Charlotteville; and two grandchildren, Rachel and Ryan Ouimet. He was predeceased by a son, Bryan E. Nyback.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, at the E.J. Skinner Funeral Chapel in Worcester. A vigil service will be held at 8:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, at St. Anna's Roman Catholic Church in Summit, with the Rev. Edward Golding as celebrant. Burial will follow at the Charlotteville Cemetery.

Contributions may be made in loving memory of Mr. Nyback to the charity of one's choice.

Funeral arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Roland Tuckey Sr.

NORWICH — Roland C. Tuckey Sr., 77, of Norwich, passed away early Wednesday morning, Sept. 27, 2000, in the Chenango Memorial Hospital of Norwich.

Born in Bainbridge, Roland grew up in the Bainbridge and Sidney area, where he attended their local schools. Following his education, he worked on several farms around New Berlin for several years.

Roland lived in the South Edmeston area before moving to Norwich in 1979.

He was employed by Chesebrough Ponds Co. in Sherburne, working as a material handler, and for 10 years he worked for the National Bank & Trust Co. as a custodian. He retired from NBT in 1988.

Roland was a member of the Faith Bible Church of Oxford and enjoyed being outdoors. He was extremely fond of gardening and loved animals.

Born Nov. 1, 1922, in Bainbridge, Roland was the son of Floyd and Pearl (Davis) Tuckey.

On Jan. 28, 1967, in South Edmeston, he married Helen Angell, who survives.

Besides his wife, Helen, of Norwich, Roland is survived by his children, Carolyn Graham and her friend, Chris Jones, of Norwich, and Roland C. Tuckey Jr. of Rochester; five grandchildren, Lori Graham, Stephanie Graham, Rachel Graham, Christina Graham and Andrew Graham; his sister, Maude Strain of Lynchburg, Va.; and his brother, Floyd Tuckey of Sidney. Several half brothers and sisters, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Memorial services for Roland will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert Wesley, retired Baptist clergy of Sidney, officiating and assisted by the Rev. William Kuhn, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Mount Upton.

Interment will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Valley Heights Christian Academy, Scholarship Fund, Calvary Drive, Norwich, N.Y. 13815.

Chester T. Carr

BAINBRIDGE — Chester T. Carr, 77, of Bainbridge, passed away Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at his residence.

He was born May 14, 1923, in the town of Tompkins, the son of Edward and Lelia (Turtur) Carr.

He was married to Aneita Reynolds on May 30, 1945, in Unadilla. Mrs. Carr died on May 6, 1984.

He has been a resident of Bainbridge since 1966 and had previously lived in Unadilla. He was a retired employee of the Mead Corp. of Sidney and for many years was employed as a truck driver for Earl Codington, Whitaker Inc. of Unadilla and the town of Unadilla.

He was a former member of the Bainbridge Fire Department.

Chester is survived by his longtime companion, Thelma Alger of Bainbridge; two daughters and a son-in-law, Carol and Larry Whitehill of Oxford and Jeanette Robertson of Bainbridge; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Chester E. and Kathleen Carr of Bainbridge, Gordon and Ruth Carr of Bainbridge, Walter and Cheryl Carr of Mount Upton and Randy Carr of Canton, Ohio; three sisters, Edna Banks of Mount Upton, Barbara Hinz of Unadilla and Janice Brundage of Peabody, Kan.; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Ernest Carr; his brothers, Ernest and Millard Carr; and a sister, Iva Vosburgh.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla. Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

Friends may call at the funeral home Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at their convenience. The family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bainbridge Emergency Squad or Hospice of Chenango County of Norwich.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Harold Jacobus

ONEONTA — Harold (Jake) Jacobus, 93, of Oneonta, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, at Countryside Care Center in Delhi after a lengthy illness.

He was born Oct. 21, 1906, in Oneonta, the son of William and Lillian (Butts) Jacobus.

He was never married.

Mr. Jacobus was a 40-year employee with the city of Oneonta in the maintenance and public works department until his retirement in 1971.

He was a lifelong area resident and an honorary life member of Oneonta Elks BPOE 1312, where he was named Elk of the Year in 1976-77.

He is survived by close friends, Mr. and Mrs. Keith McCarthy of Oneonta.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Clifford (Kip) and Charles Jacobus.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, with the Rev. John Dawson, Catskill Area Hospice chaplain, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Lorenzo C. Brown

FRASER — Lorenzo C. Brown, 85, of state Route 10, Fraser, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born July 4, 1915, at Todd Mountain, Arkville. Lorenzo was one of 12 children of Clark and Emma Jane (Warren) Brown.

He married Frances E. Gardner on Aug. 6, 1945, in Sidney Center. Frances died Oct. 10, 1990.

Lorenzo was a World War II Army veteran. He was a dairy farmer most of his life. He was employed on Clark Jack Farm in Fraser for 26 years and retired in 1975. He was an area resident since childhood.

Lorenzo is survived by six daughters and sons-in-law, Sylvia (Lewis) Pardee of DeLancey, Shirley Brown of Margaretville, Elsie (Jay) Wright of DeLancey, Martha (Gary) Barrett of Davenport, Patricia Brown of Oneonta and Alma (Asa) Winner of Andes; 15 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home, Delhi, with the Rev. Bert More officiating. Burial will be in the Hamden Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Friday between 7 and 9 p.m., at which time the family will be in attendance.

Memorial contributions may be made in Lorenzo's memory to the Delhi Fire Department EMS, Delhi.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Robert A. Peet, Delhi.

Carol Erle Colone

MANASSAS, Va. — Carol Heloise Erle Colone, 53, of Manassas, Va., died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at Prince William Hospital, Manassas, Va.

Carol was a loving and devoted wife, mother and a loving second mother to all who knew her.

Survivors include her husband of 33 years, John F. Colone Sr.; two daughters, Danielle Colone of Venice, Fla., and Shandi Colone of the home; one son, John Colone Jr., of the home; and one brother, Dan Erle, of Cobleskill, N.Y.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center St., Manassas, Va. The phone number is (703) 257-6028.

The funeral liturgy will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at All Saints Catholic Church, 9300 Stonewall Road, Manassas. Interment will follow at Stonewall Memory Gardens, Manassas.

Benedict DeAngelo

APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. — Benedict R. DeAngelo, 95, of Apache Junction, Ariz., and formerly of Hawaii, New York City and Oneonta, N.Y., died Sept. 25, 2000, in Mesa, Ariz., after a lengthy illness.

He was born Nov. 23, 1904, in Sicily, Italy, the son of Anthony and Rosemary (Latteri) DeAngelo.

Mr. DeAngelo was a history teacher in the New York City High School system until his retirement in 1969.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, N.Y.

Leah M. McMorris

EAST WORCESTER — A memorial service for Leah M. McMorris, 93, who passed away June 29, 2000, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, at the East Worcester United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Evelyn P. Lintern officiating.

John D. Null

MONTOURSVILLE, Pa. — John D. Null, 49, of Montoursville, Pa., died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, at Camp Snow, Quebec, Canada, while on a hunting expedition.

Born March 26, 1951, in Oneonta, he was the son of Charles H. and Ida R. (Blanchard) Null.

He and his wife, Karen M. (Bamonte) Null, celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary Dec. 18.

He was employed by Center Manufacturing and was co-owner of Liberty Coins, both of Williamsport, Pa.

He attended Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Montoursville.

He was a member of American Legion Post 104 of Montoursville and the Williamsport Numismatic Society.

John was frequent blood donor, and he gave more than 5 gallons.

Surviving besides his mother, of Oneonta, are his wife; his son, Justin D.; two daughters, Angela M., a student at Lycoming College, and Alicia R., all at home; brothers, Charles H. Jr. of Oneonta and David G. of Cogan Station, Pa.; and one sister, Merry E. Null, of Rome, N.Y.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 800 Mulberry St., Montoursville.

Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery, Williamsport.

Friends may call at Knight-Confer's Funeral Home, 1914 Memorial Ave., Williamsport, from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, with a vigil service at 8 p.m.

The family of John D. Null suggests contributions in his memory be made to the American Red Cross, 320 E. Third St., Williamsport, Pa. 17701.

Arthur S. Covert

STAMFORD — Arthur Sterling Covert passed away peacefully at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at the Albany Medical Center ICU, Albany, N.Y.

His spine had been fractured in an automobile accident Sept. 1, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down.

He was born in New York City on Dec. 20, 1916, the son of Frank Manning and Anna Regina Covert. He earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from RPI in 1939, a B. Ch.E. from Ohio State University in 1947 and a master's degree in statistics from Columbia University.

During World War II, he helped build the first atomic bomb at Los Alamos, N.M. He was employed at National Distillers, American Cyanamid, Squibb Laboratories, General Electric, Westinghouse Bettis project and at the Knolls Research Laboratory at G.E., retiring from the latter in 1992.

His wife, Barrie Covert, predeceased him in 1974. A son, Patrick; a stepdaughter, Stephanie Loo; and a grandson, Jacob Loo Ritari, survive him.

Arthur willed his body to the Albany Medical Center.

At Mr. Covert's request, there will be no funeral.

Yana Parker

OAKLAND,  Calif. — Yana Parker (a k a Mary Ann LaBuz), born June 7, 1935, a native of upstate New York, mother of three and grandmother of six, passed away peacefully in her Oakland home among friends and family Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, after a long battle with cancer.

She was the author of many best-selling books in the career-development field and helped job seekers around the world with her unique approach to resume writing (www.damngood.com). She was the editor of the publication "Communal Grapevine" in the late 1970s and early '80s and was very active in helping people find affordable communal living situations in the Bay area.

Yana is survived by her daughter, Amy Kurle, of Poulsbo, Wash.; her son, Matt Parker, of Albany,  Calif.; a sister; two brothers; and many other friends and relatives throughout the country who will miss her so much.

Ruth Trowbridge

MILFORD — Ruth Trowbridge, 77, of Milford, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, at her residence.

She was born in Hartwick on Sept. 9, 1923, the daughter of Jacob and Ella (Mead) Bush.

Ruth retired in 1987 from The Meadows, where she was employed as a nurse's aide. Before that, she was involved with the family farm and did home health care.

She is survived by a son, Dennis W. Trowbridge, of Melbourne, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Susan King and Mark Trowbridge, of Palm Bay, Fla.

Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice or the Milford Fire Department.

Arrangements were made with the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.
