Bernard P. Sagik

WESTFORD — Dr. Bernard Phillip Sagik, 75, of 111 Draper Hill Rd., Westford, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at his home after a short illness.

He was born in New York City on May 8, 1925.

As a boy he loved this area and was happy to spend the end of his life here. Dr. Sagik loved to visit the Catskills as a youth and was happily reunited with his land and mountains in his final years. He will be sorely missed by family and friends.

Dr. Sagik is survived by his wife, Nita; sons, Steve and Paul; daughters, Debra and Tammy; grandchildren, Zafka, Tanya, David, Sarah and Peter; and daughter and son-in-law, John and Annette.

There will be no public services. However, cards and messages of condolence will be appreciated.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dr. Sagik's memory may be made to the Habitat for Humanity International, 121 Habitat St., Americus, Ga. 31709 or the Heifer Project International, P.O. Box 8016, Little Rock, Ark. 72203-8106.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Josephine Taylor

DAVENPORT — Josephine Taylor, 96, of Davenport died at home, Jan. 3, 2001.

She was born May 6, 1904 in Davenport, the daughter of Jay W. and Harriet (Wilson) Graig.

She married Ralph D.  Taylor on Aug. 3, 1924. He passed away March 25, 1975.

A lifelong Davenport resident, Mrs.  Taylor worked for many years at Audio Sears, Stamford, as a solderer.

She is survived by two sons, and daughters-in-law, Carlton D. and Deanne  Taylor and Ernest G. and Sandra Taylor; four grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Private family graveside services will take place in the spring at Davenport Cemetery, Davenport.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Davenport.

Harriett Risley

BELMONT, Mass. — Harriett (Shappee) Risley, formerly of Sidney, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at Belmont Manor Nursing Home in Belmont, Mass. She was 80 years old.

Mrs. Risley was born in 1920 and raised in Horseheads. She was a resident of Sidney for more than 50 years. She worked for some 30 years at the Scintilla, which was bought by Bendix Aviation, then Allied Signal, and later Amphenol Corp., until her retirement in 1985.

She was a member of the Sidney Elks Lodge, the First Congregational Church and the Rhythm Belles. After her retirement, she traveled and devoted time to family and friends until her move to Belmont, Mass., in 1992.

She is survived by two daughters, Janice W. Knight of Belmont, Mass., and Pauline A. Risley of Quincy, Mass.; two grandchildren, Kristin W. Romine of Framingham, Mass., and Jay D. Williams of Kennebunk, Maine; two great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Megan Romine of Framingham, Mass.; and three sisters, Genevive Mosher of Cayuta, Geraldine Austin of Long Beach,  Calif., and Susan Bell of Bellflower,  Calif.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at the United Methodist Church, 12 Liberty St., Sidney.

Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery in Quincy, Mass.

Richmond L. Hulse

COOPERSTOWN — Richmond L. Hulse, 88, of Cooperstown and Stuart, Fla., died early Thursday morning, Jan. 4, 2001, at Martin Memorial Hospital in Stuart, Fla., following a brief illness.

Mr. Hulse was born Aug. 22, 1912, on Shelter Island, the third child of Sidney Monroe and Mabel (Warner) Hulse. He married Louise Clark on Jan. 30,1944, in Oneonta.

Raised on Long Island, he graduated from Greenport High School. He then attended and graduated from the Albany College of Pharmacy where he was president of the Class of 1935. Following graduation he was employed as a pharmacist on Long Island until 1942, when he enlisted in the United States Navy. While in the Navy he served as an analytical chemist at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and in the Pacific Theater at Pearl Harbor.

After the war, Mr. Hulse was employed by the City Drug Store in Oneonta before joining Parke Davis and Co., where he worked until his retirement, as a New York manager, in 1977.

In 1982, he moved to Cooperstown, where he was a member of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church and the Leatherstocking Golf Club.

Mr. Hulse was a beloved and caring husband, father and grandfather, and a loyal friend to many.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Louise Hulse of Cooperstown and Stuart, Fla.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richmond and Jeanne Hulse of Cooperstown and Christopher and Barbara Hulse of New Canaan, Conn.; one daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Alan Lotito of West Hempstead, L.I.; six grandchildren, Richmond, Christopher and Stephanie Hulse, Kimberly Hulse, and Alan and Kristin Lotito. He also leaves a brother, Walter, of Southold, L. I., and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown with Father John R. Roos, retired pastor, officiating.

Burial will be at a later date in St. Mary's Cemetery in Index.

Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Monday evening from 7 to 9 when Mr. Hulse's family will be in attendance.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate Mass Cards, or expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial donations to The Friends of Bassett, c/o Bassett Hospital, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral in Cooperstown.

Frederick Kuhr Jr.

EAST WORCESTER — Frederick W. Kuhr Jr., 55, of East Worcester died unexpectedly on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born April 13, 1945, in Queens, the son of Frederick W. Sr. and Mary "Molly" E. (Whitley) Kuhr.

Fred married Joan M. Ray.

He was a United States Air Force veteran serving in the Vietnam War.

Fred was a detective with the Police Department in San Bernardino,  Calif., for 15 years. While living in California he was involved with the San Bernardino Special Olympics.

Fred became a full-time resident of East Worcester 16 years ago.

He was a member of the Worcester Town Board and was employed by the Best Western Inn of Cobleskill as a front-desk and computer clerk.

He is survived by his wife, Joan M. Ray-Kuhr of East Worcester; sons, Ozzie and wife, Angie Kuhr and Chad and wife, Heather Kuhr, all of California; stepchildren, Brad Ray and Georgette of  Pennsylvania, Stacey Dixon and Melvin Piercy of Westford and Kelley Ray and Eric  Jones of East Worcester; grandchildren, Stephanie, Tiffani, Roger, Brandon, Alyssa, Jessica and Joseph; sisters, Joan McGuinn of Brockport and Carol Harrigan of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and brother-in-law, Jack McGuinn.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester.

A private memorial service will be held at a later time.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in loving memory of Fred to the Worcester Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 181, Worcester, N.Y. 12197.

Arrangements are by E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

Ann L. Henderson

EDMESTON — Ann L. Henderson, 71, of Edmeston, went to Glory Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at her home with her family by her side.

She was born April 10, 1929, in New Berlin, the daughter of Eric and Mae (Aylesworth) Smalley.

She married John P. Henderson in Virginia.

Ann was a true friend, mother, wife and grandma to all.

She was a member of the Second Baptist Church, Edmeston, had previously served as treasurer and clerk and was currently a member of the choir. Ann was a member of the American Baptist Women, the Eastern Star, Peet Hook Players and County Council of Churches and was current President of the Area Council of Churches.

She enjoyed volunteering and had previously been active at the Farmers Museum, Chase Nursing Home, Pathfinder Village, Meals on Wheels and, most recently, at the Louis Busch Hager Cancer Center at Bassett Hospital.

Ann treasured her family and enjoyed the many times that they spent together, but she was also an active participant in life, sharing her joy and energy by serving her church and community whenever they needed.

She is survived by her husband, John; her children and their spouses, Harry Marshall Dailey, LouAnn Sally Matthews, Jay and Theresa Henderson and James and Mary Ann Henderson; two stepchildren, Donna Jean Snyder and Joann Patricia Childers; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Hilda Osterhout; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her sister Ruma.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Second Baptist Church, Edmeston, with the Rev. John Buskey and Ann's son, the Rev. Jay Henderson, officiating. Calling hours are Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ann's memory to the American Cancer Society at 57 Front St., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905-4797; envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Clauson Soule Jr.

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Clauson Soule Jr., 74, died peacefully at home, Friday, Jan. 5, 2001.

He was born in Herkimer on Sept. 16, 1926, son of Clauson Sr. and Edna Russell Soule.

He was educated in Herkimer schools.

Clauson was joined in marriage to Mary Potter of Little Falls on April 24, 1948, a loving union of 52 years.

He was employed by the Library Bureau of Herkimer, starting as a lumber handler in 1946 and retiring as a vice president in 1979. After his retirement, he began a second career as a locomotive engineer for Delaware Otsego Systems of Cooperstown, retiring in 1992.

Clauson served as a Village Justice for Richfield Springs, and was a past member of the Richfield Springs Central School Board. He was proud to be a special deputy for the Otsego County Sheriff's Department and was an associate member of the Leatherstocking Chapter of the Association of Former New York State Troopers.

Clauson was an avid sportsman and excellent marksman, who taught his skills to his sons and grandsons. He had an abiding love for nature and was the founder of the Doe Pond Club in Big Moose.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary; his four sons and their wives, David and Patricia Soule of Cooperstown, Richard and Cheryl Soule of Richfield Springs, Gary and Nancy Soule of Clinton and Greg and Patricia Soule of Clinton; two daughters and their husbands, Rebecca and Bruce Ward of Herkimer and Patricia and David Abbenda of Pattersonville; nine grandchildren, Brittany, Griffin, Bryant, John, Molly, Nora, Annemarie, Joslyn Soule and Calum Abbenda. He is also survived by three sisters, Marie Austin of Utica, Janette Grose of Pittsboro, N.C., and Helen Marriott of Ormond Beach, Fla. He also leaves his faithful companions, two Jack Russell terriers, Josie and Wendell.

He was predeceased by a brother, Russell Soule.

Services will be held Tuesday, at 11 a.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs. Relatives and friends may call tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. in the funeral home.

Joanne Sobers

ONEONTA — Joanne Chilletti Sobers, 62, of Oneonta died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at her residence after a lengthy illness.

She was born July 31, 1938, in Binghamton, the daughter of Domonick and Lucille (Grogan) Chilletti.

She married Carl Sobers on Feb. 10, 1961, in Unadilla.

She was a lifelong area resident, having lived in Sidney before moving to Oneonta.

She was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta.

She is survived by her husband, Carl, at home; her mother, Lucille Chilletti of Sidney; two sons, Nicholas Sobers of Oneonta and Thomas Sobers of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two stepsons, Martin and Phillip Sobers, both of Alaska; two sisters and brother-in-law, Jim and Mary Leonard of Bainbridge and Grace Velasco of Dade City, Fla.; one grandson, Nicholas Sobers of Oneonta; several nephews, nieces and cousins; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Carl and Sophie Puylara, John and Nora Sobers, and Aurilla Stringer and George Smith.

A private Funeral Mass will be held at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

Those who wish may make contributions to Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Kathy Jean Shaw

GALWAY — Kathy Jean Shaw, 50, of Hermance Road, M.A. Broadalbin, N.Y. 12025, died at home after a long illness on Friday, Jan. 5, 2001.

She was born in Cooperstown. She had been a civic leader in Galway for many years. She was the prospector of Stepping Stone Nursery School in Galway for 23 years. Also, a member of Galway United Methodist Church, Galway Players Community Theater, Galway Lioness Club, Galway Womens' Club, Galway PTSA, Life Member, Galway Ambulance Corps., Galway Community Playground Committee and Galway TOPS and had been a leader in local Girl Scout, Cub Scouts, Odyssey of the Mind teams, as well as a summer counselor at Woodward Lake Boy Scout Camp.

Survivors include her husband, William A. Shaw; daughter, Cynthia L. Boucher of Burnt Hills; son, Douglas W. Shaw of Cincinnati, Ohio; her father, Charles Herzog of Worcester; sisters, Colleen Eager of E. Worcester and Tina DeFilippis of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a brother, Dennis Herzog of Worcester.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the Galway United Methodist Church. Friends may call Thursday, Jan. 11, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Richard J. Ryan Funeral Home, Sacandaga Road at West Street, Galway Village.

Those wishing to donate may do so by making a contribution to Galway Village Methodist Church Window Fund in her memory.

Katherine O. Horth

ONEONTA — Katherine O. Horth, 54, of Oneonta, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at her home following a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born on Dec. 20, 1946, in Bloomville, the daughter of Herbert W. and Anna E. Moore Faulkner McAdams.

She was predeceased by her father and a brother, Bill McAdams.

She is survived by her husband, Vaughn P. Horth of Oneonta; her children, Brenda Andreassen and her companion, Casey Reed, of West Oneonta, Misty Holling and her fiancee, Keith Leggett, of Oneonta, Robin McLean of W. Chazy, Gary Horth of Sarasota, Fla., and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Horth of Otego; 12 grandchildren; her mother, Anna McAdams; sisters, Annie Souls, Sharon Becker, Patty Kelly and Bonnie Hamm; brother, Mike McAdams; a dear friend, Stephanie Thorn; and several nieces and nephews.

Katherine was a 37-year resident of Oneonta.

She married Vaughn Horth on June 27, 1964, and was employed as a residential aide at ARC for more than 10 years and received an award for her length of employment.

She is remembered as a wonderful mother who loved spending time with her grandchildren and drinking coffee with her sister, Bonnie, and best friend, Stephanie Thorn. She also enjoyed her trips to Florida, where she vacationed every year.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Judith Thistle, chaplain of the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, officiating. Spring interment will be in Maryland Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, in Katherine's memory.

Ruth B. Herrick

MARGARETVILLE — Ruth B. Herrick, 85, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, after a short illness.

She was born Sept. 29, 1915, in Walton, the daughter of George H. and Anna E. (Nottage) Nichols.

Her first marriage was to Harland Beers; he died in 1963. Her second marriage was to Everett W. Herrick on Dec. 5, 1969, in Downsville. He died Dec. 25, 1988.

She was employed at the Kelly's Hotel, Margaretville, and was a bookkeeper for Agway Inc., where she worked at offices in Walton and Margaretville.

She had lived in the Margaret-ville area for more than 50 years.

She was a member of St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, Margaretville.

She graduated from the Walton High School.

She is survived by one son, James A. Beers of Amesbury, Mass.; one grandson, James H. Beers of Boiceville; sister, Anna Miner of Walton; brother, Albert Nichols of Unadilla; two great-granddaughters, Julia M. and Sophia Beers; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one grandson, Paul Beers, in 1990; one sister, Hazel Dutton; and three brothers, Henry, Clarence and George.

A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville, with the Rev. R.L. Donahue officiating.

Inurnment will be held in the spring at the Old Margaretville Cemetery.

Family will receive friends at the Hynes Funeral Home, Saturday, from noon until service time at 1 p.m.

Contributions may be made in memory of Ruth B. Herrick to the Ambulance Fund of the Margaretville Memorial Hospital, Margaretville, N.Y. 12455.

Arrangements are by Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville.
